The Packers Move Josh Bell to I.R and Sign Maurice Simpkins
Wednesday should be quiet for the Green Bay Packers since the team has no practice.
CB Josh Bell was on crutches Saturday night after the scrimmage and they weren't going to wait for him to return to battle for the 5th CB job. Since LB Clay Matthews is out for a couple weeks with a hamstring injury, and LB Cyril Obiozor was injured during practice on Tuesday, depth is an issue and they needed make a roster move to add a linebacker.
So they signed indoor football league LB Maurice Simpkins. I'm not sure if the former Coastal Carolina product has ever been in an NFL training camp (I would suspect that he has), but the Packers didn't have to go far to scout the IFL's Most Improved Player of 2010 since he most recently played for the Green Bay Blizzard. (I'm a little bummed to read that former Packers LB Brian Noble is no longer the owner of the Blizzard). Simpkins had a tryout with the Packers back in July. Despite his great 2010 season, and the makings of an Invincible type story, it looks like he's been signed just to fill out the 2nd team in practice. At 6'0", 236 lbs. he's the shortest, and tied for the lightest weight, LB on the roster.

"Simpkins! Simpkins! Nasty, tinny sort of name, Simpkins!"
ahhh Month Python. I hope this dude do well, but it would make more sense to replace Bell with another CB.

Fresh bodies
Right now there isn’t too bad a drought of CB’s for the Packers. Underwood and Lee are appearing to be up to snuff and Shields is surprising people. In all honesty Bell would probably have not made the team.
OLB on the other hand we were light coming into camp. Add in injuries to Jones (who is no supposedly better, but still), Poppinga (looking to get a bit better but you never know with head injuries), Matthews, Obizor, and Zombo coming up a bit gimpy…well OLB is even lighter. Basically they need a body to fill the place during drills, not someone who is necessarily going to make an impact or even make the team.
Although this might of been a great excuse to kick the tires on a certain ex-Patriot. Just sayin…

Make SlowJoe445's comment green
Probably the best the Packers will get out of Simpkins is the Monty Python reference
Again
He’s merely a camp body. That’s all they need right now, especially considering that’s pretty much what Bell was as well.

Ni!!!
Not expecting much here if the guy was available at THIS point…but we need people to be on the field and he’s got as good a chance to impress as some of the other CBs they’ve brought in lately.
