Ask A Colts Fan - 3rd Preseason Game Edition

Hello, Packers fans. It's time for the annual 3rd preseason game, which is almost always the most interesting preseason game due to it being the game where the starters typically play the most. Use this thread to ask me and many other Colts fans who will be here between now and Thursday anything you want about the Colts. We should have plenty of questions for you too, as many people in our group are big-time Aaron Rodgers fans.

Let's hope for a great game Thursday with no injuries on either side.

I'll start it off with an easy question.

How long do you expect Rodgers to play Thursday? I expect Peyton to play a half.

Two series.

Maybe three at the most. He’s shown that he’s in shape and ready to go, and I don’t think the coaching staff has any desire to leave him out there longer than necessary. Flynn will likely play most of the game, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Graham Harrell throw the ball more than once.

Half

I would expect a half out of Rodgers also! The packers are pretty typical when it comes to these kinda situations. Maybe a little less than a half since he’s been lighting it up and they need to get Flynn more playing time.

How’s the Colts D going to be this season? Is Sanders going to be back? or doesn’t it matter cuz they know how to play w/o him and maybe he’s past his NFL shelf-life?

I REALLY wanted Jerry Hughes in the draft and thought he would be STUD 34 OLB opposite Matthews! How’s Hughes looking at DE for you? IMO, he should be able to give Freeney and Mathis a breather and get consistent pressure in their place. Was Hughes someone on the fans radar as a possible pick? I know most people don’t look at DE as a “need” for the Colts….

by Strohman on Aug 23, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

1. The starting D for the Colts looks awesome right now. The only problem there is not having a lot of depth at a couple of positions like CB. Sanders is in fact back. He played for a series or two in the 2nd preseason game, and he looks completely healthy. It does matter though because while Bullitt is a very good SS, Bobzilla is a special player whose presence elevates the whole defense. He is not yet past his NFL self-life as none of his injuries to date have impacted his long-term ability to play football. He always seems to get injured in a new place.

2. Hughes hasn’t really been noticed that much this training camp/preseason. This doesn’t really worry me since it takes a while for DE’s to start producing. For example, it took at least half of Freeney’s rookie season for Freeney to get his feet under him, and I’m not expecting Hughes to be as good as Freeney. And yes, Hughes was definitely on our radar as an option, because DE was considered a need by many of us as a backup to Freeney/Mathis. Not having a quality DE backup killed the Colts in 2007 and 2009, so it was finally time to do something about it.

Even Peyton Manning is excited about the Colts D

I believe this is the first time in a long time that all of the starting defensive players have been able to participate in training camp and the pre-season. Yes Sanders is back, and his presence is definitely needed. I really like his back-up Melvin Bullitt; he’s a starter on at least 25 other teams in the NFL, but Bob has something special that Melvin doesn’t have.

Hughes looks okay, but he’s kinda lost out there. It’s mostly because he’s a rookie still learning the system. A lot of us wanted an O-lineman, either Bulaga or Charles Brown, since Polian called out the O-line after the Super Bowl. However, the Colts didn’t really have a back-up DE that could have made a impact in that game, and I guess Polian didn’t think Brown was worth a first round pick, so he chose Jerry Hughes.

Cass and KMR covered the D well, but there's a bit more I want to say about Hughes

the tools are visibly there, but he doesn’t have them translated to pro level game yet. So far he’s been running behind 2009 CFL DPOY John Chick at DE who looks very good.

Soon after the World Cup,

BBS decided to “run a tighter ship” around SB, which resulted in him giving out warnings and banning people (including some open thread regulars) for basically disagreeing with him under the guise of attacking an SB writer (when no personal attacks occurred) or “instigating something.” In response to this, we moved out rolling open threads to Indy Cornrows (the Pacers site), and after several failed E-Mail attempts to reason with BBS, he removed me as community manager. So, a lot of us are posting exclusively on Indy Cornrows.

Holy crap.

I remember those open threads very well. In case anyone seems to notice me getting along with the Colts fans here, it’s because I participated in open threads at Stampede Blue. The threads mostly dealt with NCAA March Madness and the World Cup.

Hence why I know the Colts fans who are here in APC today. This also explains why I have so many comments over there.

However, this is overboard. I’ll probably stay away from Stampede Blue, though I probably won’t join Indy Cornrows (I’m a Chicago Bulls fan).

Good to know, Cass.

I’ve been avoiding Stampede Blue so long that I barely stop by at all to glance at headlines for any Colts news I’ve missed elsewhere. I had no idea how many others have done the same, and I missed most of the drama mentioned above. I’ll have to swing by the Pacers’ site more now that I know this.

This site (acme packing company) is the only SB Nation pro football site that I have made easy access to, and I have been jumping to a couple others from here. For me it’s easy. I love the Packers.

Anyhow, is there any hope for Stampede Blue to become tolerable again? Also, do you frequent 18to88.com or Coltzilla? I like those sites as well. SB nation has the best fan interactive experience, though.

Colts preseason losses

Who will emerge as the #3 option behind Wayne and Clark? Garcon had a nice playoff run but has he shown enough in camp/preseason to stave off Coffee and a recuperating Gonzalez?

by Dave Z on Aug 23, 2010 2:21 PM CDT reply actions

I'm counting on Gonzo for that spot

although that is a spot of contention for many Colts fans. Garcon has basically been injured all camp/preseason (nobody knows how or where he was injured), although reports are that he will play Thursday, so he hasn’t shown anything.

Also, Gonzo appears to be either fully healthy or close to it. I trust his hands a lot more than I trust Garcon’s hands, which is a big deal to me when evaluating players (which is a big reason for my hatred of players like TO, Braylon Edwards, and Ted Ginn, Jr.)

It's Collie not Coffee :-)

and like Cass said, I’m also banking on Gonzo to eventually become the #2 wide receiver and 3rd option some point in the season. I expect Garcon to start the first few games of the season, but I can definitely see Gonzo making some awesome plays and crucial catches that could possibly put him in the starting line-up, but still the Colts will find a a way to use of the wide receivers. Don’t think that any of those 4 receivers won’t get any playing time; Peyton loves spreading the ball to everyone.

Honestly,

I don’t think grabbing either of the two would be a good fantasy idea, but if forced, I’d take Collie because as the slot receiver, he should get more time than Garcon.

As bye week late round picks.

They are definitely on the fantasy radar. Due to the offense they play in and the QB throwing them the ball. Not as front line starters…

hands are better, more consistent and I honestly believe he’ll get the most targets outside of Wayne/Clark. He could have an 800 yard/8 TD season if EVERYTHING plays out perfectly for him. Upside is there.

I think (unfortunately for fantasy players) there'll be a ton of mix and match based of situations

Collie seems locked into the slot, but at the #2 spot Garçon and Gonzo have differing, but both very useful, skillsets. Garçon is bigger, stronger, more physical and aggressive than any WR to get real PT for the Peyton Manning era-Colts. Gonzo is your classic Colts WR. Ok size, but not huge or physical, good speed but not a burner, with fantastic hands and route running.

Collie isn’t a safe grab though, because he might not play on the outside. He played and practiced exclusively in the slot last year. They’ve started working him outside this year some, but they might prefer Gonzo or Garçon out wide since both have had productive seasons there, while Collie has only produced from the slot. That could take him off the field for the significant minority of the offensive snaps in which the Colts go 2TE (and rookie in-line TE Brody Eldridge has been a major standout in came and preseason to date, so the 2 TE packages aren’t going anywhere).

When you are considering them I’d do it as all being co-3rd options in the Colts D.

I expect the receiving corp will be

Wayne, Gonzalez, Collie, and Garcon (with perhaps someone like Taj Smith, Blair White or Brandon James making the roster and thus holding the fifth spot). At TE, I expect to see Clark and Eldridge with the bulk of playing time, followed by Jacob Tamme on the depth chart.

Were Addai and Brown ever a two-headed monster?

The O-line is still pathetic, but I did see a spark in Brown during the Bills game last week; so hopefully the running game will be better. Addai is a beast: he may not get yardage like other RBs, but does so much more. Brown has a lot to prove this season. We Colts fans were shocked that Polian picked him in the 2009 draft. He did show some spark earlier in the season, but injuries and learning the offense really got to him.

10 + playoffs for Sanders.

RB

Your RB are aided by the fact that they are always running vs 7 man fronts not 8… Not unlike Grant for the Packers… So the OL doesn’t have to be great run blockers, just pass blockers, since the DL are basically only playing the run on the way to the QB.

It's a little early to tell,

but I’m really liking Devin Moore, a RB/KR/PR who was undrafted in 2009, and bounced around Seattle and Carolina last year. While not the best RB, he was ridiculously impressive returning kicks and punts against the Lions last week, and if he can duplicate that performance, I’ll probably fall in love with him.

5th round TE Brody Eldridge has been great

we all knew he could block, he started more games on the Oklahoma OL last year (5) than he did at TE (4), but for a guy with just 13 career receptions in 4 years, he looks good out there running routes and catching the ball.

I think that some late round steals could include

TE Brody Eldridge (for sure), WR Brandon James, OLB Kavell Conner, CB Terrail Lambert and perhaps even FS Terrell Skinner.

Not rookies, but I would have to mention the names of DE John Chick and RB Devin Moore as well.

At the same time, the team is deep enough that I’d not be shocked to see a couple of these names get cut. We will see…

On another note,

how confident are you in the O-line this year and why? Also, were Rodgers’ sacks last year mostly a product of the O-line, holding the ball too long, or a combination of the 2?

It was both.

Especially early in the year. There were a lot of “Get rid of the ball!” comments here, and it was definitely a liability early in the year.

However, the Packers’ offensive line gelled toward the end of the year. I really did not understand the drafting of Bulaga. I mean, I know why they drafted him, but I would have preferred to see Green Bay pick a DB with their first-round pick.

I don't think Al Harris is fully healthy.

He went down with a torn ACL in the Packers’ win over San Francisco last November.

I think he’s better, but I also think he might not be starting on Thursday. As for the other DB’s there are some we like (Charles Woodson) and some we don’t like (Jarrett Bush, and wait to see what we post regarding him after he gets burned in coverage).

by LovinBlue on Aug 23, 2010 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

DB

Despite vermonts feelings at DB, I think the Packers are pretty well set at DB. They have 6 CB that will make the team and a 7th that could depending on Harris’ availability to start the season! Just that some are young and need experience!!!

I for one have been of the belief that OLB is FAR more a “need” than DB!!! Behind Matthews we don’t have another bonafide OLB pass rusher! Jones is adequate at best, and would be far better in a reserve role rather than a starting one! Thats why I was so big on Hughes! I think he would have made an excellent LOLB for us opposite Matthews!

THat being said… Taking Bulaga ove Hughes was a no-brainer IMO!!! LT are one of the most difficult positions to fill and theres not many that excel outside the Top 15 draft area and they NEVER Make FA…

by Strohman on Aug 23, 2010 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

reportedly the Colts were trying to move up for Bulaga, but never found a price they could stomach

so it seems like the Colts were very high on both Bulaga and Hughes, while they didn’t think much of Saffold or Charles Brown as early picks.

Yes, he certainly did. It’s pretty impressive that he was able to do so too, especially if you watched any of our games early on last season. I swear the pocket collapsed on him every few plays, and when it wasn’t our right tackle at the time, Allen Barbre was letting his guy run right by him.

We’re all pretty excited about Rodgers and what he’ll do in the future for us.

The Bulaga pick seems exactly like the Colts first two picks

Take a great talent at a high priority position, even though you have excellent, but aging vets there. Short term the pick is insurance, long term you should have developed a cornerstone guy for the franchise. You don’t get immediate impact, but if you are a contender, it’s a challenge to find that in anything more than bit roles.

Its typical Ted Thompson pick too.

He’ll always take the higher upside guy at a premier position. Not unlike getting Rodgers when he fell in ’05… Packers and Indy are 2 of the most prominent build thru the draft teams in the NFL. Even Matthews is a good example of that… Packers had him rated #12 overall and considered taking him when they settled on Raji. Both were kinda need pick though too. But great value!

I’ve used Indy as a built thru the draft example when some criticise Thompson for not doing more in FA or trade markets.

Curious how Indy fans rate THompson as a GM? I’ve been in his corner since he was hired.

by Strohman on Aug 23, 2010 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Curious how Indy fans rate THompson as a GM? I’ve been in his corner since he was hired.

My guess is that they’d probably rate him pretty high. Really the only people that I know of who like to try and tell me that Thompson is a bad GM are Vikings fans, and occasionally Bears fans.

Realistically, there’s no way you can look at the situation he was put in, in 2005 and not say that’s he done a pretty darn good job. Not only was the team full of aging guys past their primes, we had some pretty significant financial problems as well. He dug us out of that hole (salary cap wise), and has built a core of young, talented guys who will probably be able to at least get 8-9 wins here for the next 4-5 years.

The hate he receives is just silly, and probably really only because he got rid of Favre. (which was only inevitable)

by packallday555 on Aug 24, 2010 1:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Hmmmmmm...............

That really hasn’t been a topic of discussion among us. I guess that I’d rate him pretty high based on how the Favre situation was handled and the direction of the team since he became GM. I see no real problems with him.

It was a combination of the two I’d say.

I think everyone is feeling pretty confident about the OL this season. Unlike last season, we’ll have Clifton and Tauscher 100% healthy (hopefully I didn’t just jinx anything) at the beginning of the season. On top of that, we also appear to have formidable back-ups behind both of them, which wasn’t the case last season.

do you people look at manning as choker—————-i mean he is what? 9-10 in the playoffs as a qb. plus the fact that you guys have only one 1 superbowl with manning and in that time you won 12 or more games like 7 years in a row. many of those years you guys have had a first round bye to only lose before getting to the super bowl.

just wondering your views on manning—————-would you be satisfied if peyton only brought home 1 lombardi before he hangs them up?

I look at him as an amazing QB who has pulled some incredible wins out of his a$$, but hasn’t had a complete team, particularly on defense.

by LovinBlue on Aug 25, 2010 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I’ve never gotten the choker schtick he’s gotten. Sure I am sure they would have loved more title but heck ONE team each year wins it and this league is built for parity, not dynasty. I don’t remember Manning doing anything to blow most of their losses, its more of a team thing. You can only give the QB so much blame unless he is physically blowing it (last second INTs, terrible games, etc).

I would think just having a team that goes 12-4 or better every year would be enough to keep me pretty happy with a QB.
