Saturday Night Open Thread: Seahawks at Vikings, Cardinals at Bears

I'm a little late to post this tonight, but if anyone is watching either the Vikings or Bears, this is an open thread for both games.

So far the Vikings offense hasn't done any damage except grandpa Favre threw a pick six interception. The Bears game is just getting underway, but I'd expect their defense will look good tonight because QB Derek Anderson and QB Matt Leinart make a lot of defenses look pretty good.

Watching the Vikings....

… their secondary is still their weak spot. Deion Branch has broke free deep a couple of times now. Vikes should be up, but it’s 7-7 with the Hawks in FG range primarily because the Vikes keeps shooting themselves in the foot: two turnovers (one tipped pick returned for a TD), and a turnover on downs after a failed 4th and goal from the Seahawks 2 yard line. Minny’s o-line is struggling a bit getting any push. Pass protection has just been ok.

Camarillo’s going to be dangerous out of the slot. If he has to start I’m not that worried about him, but if Harvin’s healthy Camarillo’s their #3 and he’s going to beat most nickel backs. Just too smart not to and he catches everything.

10-7 now.

Branch just got driven off on a cart after making it to the sidelines on his own power. No idea how serious it is.

Gerhart's in now.

I’d forgotten how upright he runs. He’ll lower the shoulder but looks awkward getting low if he starts out with his head up. Gotthe ball on a 4th and 1, hit the pile almost standing straight up, still had the strength to come out of the pile with a 4 yard gain. Runs hard, but he’s going take a lot of hits in the knees. Fumbled on his 3rd carry, but was ruled down. I predict Chilly will fall in the love with the kid and rest AP more than he should.

I sure hope so. He just doesn’t impress me that much. Seems like he needs some space to get going, and I don’t think he’s going to be getting it from that offensive line.

Walker still looks the part, but I haven't seen him separate at all.

They’ve thrown a couple of jump balls his way and it’s clear they’re going to try to use his height in the redzone, but no catches yet that I’ve seen. Favre forced the ball to Walker twice inside the 20, one of them nearly getting picked off. Looked like Walker might have pulled up on a go route only to see Favre come his way and an overthrow result.

10-10 now.

BTW, I missed the first turnover, but saw it now in a highlight. Favre got dumped i the backfield and fumbled the ball. So the pressure on Favre might have been better early than later.

Vikings open the second half with 2 deep balls in the first 6 plays.

Both were overthrown. The first to Berrian, second to Camarillo. The one Camarillo was 10 yards long and got picked off by Trufant.

Berrian can run, but he’s going to get doubled any time Harvin’s not on the field. I’m not sure Camarillo has the speed to get open deep. Great possession guy though.

3 turnovers and 1 loss of possession on downs for the Vikings.

TOP is 2-1 in favor of the Vikings, but it’s 10-10.

Mike Williams just went 50yds on a crossing route, 20 of it YAC. God he’s huge compared to the DB’s.

Late hit by Edwards on Hasslebeck gives the Hawks another 15yds.

Comparisons between Alstott an Gerhart look really inaccurate, at least in this game.

Gerhart is big, but Alstott ran low and was all knee and shoulder pads when you tried to tackle him. Gerhart is so upright he takes his hits at the waist, but sooner or later someone’s going to catch him below the kneecap or on the side of the knee. He’s big and strong, but his center of gravity is waaaaay higher than Alstott’s was.

Pretty much sums it up.

With Rice out for the first half of the year, it looks like Walker’s going to be the guy they throw jump balls to. He’ll have to catch them to be productive because he can’t seem to separate. Maybe if they put him in motion and ran him on a crossing pattern he might get open, but it looks like they’re going to use his height a lot.

Really...

… this is the best thing Walker could hope for. Rice out. Berrian just ok. Harvin is dynamic but small and Camarillo’s a possession guy. If Walker still has anything left, he’s going to get the chance to show it in Minny. Right now he’s their 4th or 5th WR, but the opportunity is there to be the main deep threat, and maybe more than that. If he can’t take advantage there’s no one left to blame but himself.

Pretty much my thought too.

Favre might make him look good though and get Walker one last contract. It’s only fair. He cost Walker enough money by shaming him into camp so he could blow out his knee before getting his extension.

Seriously, Walker’s career/life should be one they talk about at rookie school every year. It’s one bad choice/tragedy after another. Turned himself from a star WR in the making to a cautionary tale.

There are over a 1000 posts on the Cowboy thread and 90% of them say don’t worry were just playing vanilla. They were just physically manhandled hope that trend continues. Every team plays pretty basic in the preseason

It never applies to the Offensive Line. Mostly for defense and passing plays, but that’s it. There’s not a whole lot you can cover up in plays from the OL. Therefore, the Vanilla theory does not apply to Dallas. Their OL was overwhelmed.

Vikings Defense still pretty darn good

If you can get beyond the “vanilla” comments an interesting comparison is that the Packers defense could not do anything but wave at the first team Seahawks offense with Matt Hasselback, but the Vikings defense completely shut the same Seahawks down. It seems like we are set up for a shoot out every week….like the playoff game with Arizona. This may be exciting, but without a complete team, as a Packer fan I will be very apprenhensive going into this season. If the special teams don’t improve that will cost the Pack a win or two over the course of a season.

by hokecole on Aug 29, 2010 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, but you have to keep in mind we played the Seahawks much differently then we would in a regular season game on defense. We truly did play a vanilla defense that consisted of rushing our three down linemen and sometimes an outside backer too. Our 3-4 defense is effective when we’re blitzing, and showing the offense all kinds of different looks. Obviously we didn’t do that at all against Seattle.

The Vikings defense played them a lot like how they would play them in the regular season. Because their defensive line is so good all they really do to most teams in rush their four down linemen, and drop everyone else into cover 2.

I think if we had played the Seahawks how we played the Colts as far as giving them a lot of different looks, and blitzes we would have performed much better.

by packallday555 on Aug 29, 2010 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes and no

The Vikes did very little stunting, as I recall, and rarely blitzed from either the LB or secondary. During the regular season the d-line does a lot of movement on the interior line, and the LB’s/secondary do a fair amount of blitzing.

You’re correct when you say the Vikes just rush their four down linemen, and play the cover-2, but HOW they rush their four down linemen, and how they rotate guys is a lot different in the pre-season than the regular season.

The good thing about this pre-season, at least for the defense, is that there’s no real competition, except maybe the one safety position where Jamarca Sanford looks like he’s overtaken Tyrell Johnson.

They have the same guys coming back to the same system coached by the same staff, so they really don’t need to do anything other than get in ‘football condition’ and see who fills out the second and third string.

Fair point

Your right about the stunting, I didn’t really take that into account. You guys don’t really blitz a whole lot but it is definitely something you see from time to time.

Good point about not be any real competition. Most are veterans of the system, and don’t need much practice within the scheme like many of our games do. (Really all of them)

by packallday555 on Aug 30, 2010 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Turnovers is the difference

Minnesota clearly has a better defense than Green Bay. Yeah, I fear we will give up too many yards. However, this secondary we have should continue to get plenty of turnovers, and that should be enough to tip the scale in our favor with our potent offense. This team reminds me a lot of New Orleans last year. Potent Offense + Ballhawking Defense.

I’m watching the GB vs Indy game again at the moment. I noticed that Capers really dialed up more blitz packages in this game. Taking another look at Mike Neal, I’m impressed. I’m hoping I can see him play more from the left side of the line though as he played in Cullen Jenkins place. It was like I couldn’t tell if that guy on the right side was Neal or Jenkins. Almost identical players! I wonder if Capers is thinking of any plays where DT’s Neal and Jenkins are in on passing downs and they to crossing attacks in the interior of the line. It’s an idea on certain situations where Raji takes a breather.

I was surprised that the Packers have had Neal as a RDE too. I thought he would be more a LDE. I guess maybe they want someone a little bigger on that side… From what I’ve been reading Neal, Jenkins and Raji are the 3 primary guys in the nickel at DT. If its Raji he has to get penetration and command a double team. If its Neal and Jenkins, I would imagine stunting them some would be a good attack.

When you say N.O. was a ballhawking D, wouldn’t last years Packers be an even better example? I mean we led in takeways didn’t we? LOL

Yeah, that’s the rotation I’ve been seeing too. I saw Harrell in there a couple times, but he wasn’t as good. I’ve never seen Neal and Jenkins play side by side in the Nickel yet though, probably because the team didn’t know what they had in Neal. idk.

I was just using it as a reference as it’s very much a possibility of GB making a run at the Superbowl, because yes, the Packers D indeed forced more turnovers than NO. You are correct there.

Something like that.

Not exactly sure of the number. I know Jenkins, Harris, Mathews, and Bulaga didn’t play.

Yeah, but

some people get way too worked up about what units do during pre-season games.
Another fallacy to hokecole’s fearful argument is that we played the Seahawks in PS game 2, while the ’queens played them during week 3 – the week that is generally a regular season tuneup for most teams not called the Titans; the two games are approached differently.

That's true

I never really thought about that. Starters are usually always in longer in the 3rd Preseason Game. Then with the exception of Tennessee, starters usually only play 1 or 2 series in the 4th Preseason Game.

The Packers defense might regress this year...

… but I don’t think the performance against the Seahawks proves that it’s inevitable. And while the Vikings defense might be pretty good, the Seahawks didn’t gameplan them and they did move the ball against the Vikings.

Protect the passer against the Vikings and you can beat them. Their secondary is still their soft spot. Their defense is solid, but against a high end pass offense with a quality O-line, they’ll give up points in bunches.

BCB free since 8/24/10 and happier for it.

Yep, as long as we can protect Rodgers better he should be able to shred them (and really any other defense in the NFL).

True, especially for the elite ones though. Or maybe I should say elite passers, since many don’t consider Rodgers an elite Qb.
