Colledge to start at LG Opening Day

Via Cheesehead TV: According to Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press Gazette: at head coach Mike McCarthy’s post-practice press conference, as reported on Twitter:

MM: Colledge will start at left guard in season opener.

This is not schocking due to Bryan Bulaga not playing on Thursday night Due to injury. If Bulaga comes back strong from a hip flexor injury which is not serious could he unseat Colledge for the LG job? Or was this just a savy motivational ploy by MM to get Colledge to play better? After all, the starting 5 has not changed since day 1 of camp.

Good glad they made a decision

He seemed to be playing well and now Bulaga can concentratr on the so important left tackle position that he was drafted for. Hopefully clifton makes it the whole season but at his age and recent history it may not be likely. I like the no musical chairs idea and I think we should now have the depth at each position. I’m breathing easier as a lot of teams are having big problems with their OLines right now and maybe the downfall of a contender or two.

Agree about Bulaga

I was never a fan of the LG experiment with him. This guy was the #23 pick in the draft and an accomplished at LT at Iowa. He should be the future cornerstone of the OL and that means LT.

I love that there won’t be musical chairs. I think their main goal was cross training but if he beat out Colledge, its a win win I guess.

agree here

Bulaga will now be the backup at LT and LG. So the time spent at LG was worth it to challenge Colledge a little and get him ready in case either Clifton or Colledge is injured.

Football fan to football fan

Packers in the superbowl this year.

You guys look better than anyone this preseason…by far. You guys were robbed in the playoffs last year and I don’t think anyone in the NFC, at least, will be able to hang with you this year.

You all should sit back and enjoy. I’m think you will have a year like the Colts and Saints did last year…13-3 or 14-2…bastards.

Optimistic

Wow… Your as or more optimistic than most Packer fans! Personally I have been going w/ an 11-5 record, winning the NFC North and advancing to the NFC Championship game. Possibly making a SB berth… Thats about as far as I’m ready to go. Winning the SB would be tremendous! Though I am afraid our pass rush is still going to be a problem for us…

Thanks for the vote of confidence

We still have a lot of work to do though. I’m getting more and more confident in our pass rush as each week goes by, as that was a question mark in Training Camp. We still need better performances out of our secondary though. Our offense is sharp though, no doubt.

Thanks for the high praise

I have high hopes for the season. It’s a team loaded with talent and heart that has made fans look forward quickly following that awful 07 heartbreaker to your guys. It will hopefully be a great year.

No, I don’t think it’s a ploy. Colledge has actually played pretty well this preseason, and from what I’ve read he had a good camp too.

I don't think it was a ploy

I think they wanted to get Bulaga ready in case there was an injury on the left side at all. But I think MM making it an “open competition” for the starting job was a bit of a motivational kick in the pants to Colledge.

by sidtheelf on Aug 30, 2010 7:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Competition

Colleedge had a really good year in 2008 when he had to fight for his job and was looking over his shoulder compared to last year where it was given. Hopefully he has a great year as he knows there are people behind him that can step in

by the yooper on Aug 30, 2010 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

That's probably it

I panicked a bit when I heard Bulaga would compete for the LG spot, but it could indeed have been a motivation move for Colledge.

I’m curious about how this may affect Newhouse. The staff likes Newhouse more as a LT, and he has played well there. If that remains the case, Newhouse is the 3rd LT on the depth chart behind Clifton and Bulaga. Is there any chance he could test his ability at RT? It’s a thought if the team decides to give up on Breno (who we can all admit has been inconsistent as a pass blocker).

I could go for Newhouse instead of Breno

This was Breno’s last chance and I don’t think he really did anything to make that chance a reality. He’s been shaky in pass protection, which is the big thing on this team. It’s a shame if he doesn’t pan out because he really does have the physical tools to get the job done…he just can’t pan out to the speed of the game.

I love the idea of Newhouse as a RT back up. Really the position would be Lang’s for the most part, so you can give Newhouse some time to come along and it gives some padding just in case the worst happens and guys start dropping like flies.

Newhouse

Its hard to know what they will do w/ Newhouse. He’s got a chance to be a really good OT. But between the two, I think Bulaga would be the more natural RT and Newhouse the LT… Thats pure conjecture but Bulaga is the better run blocker, so it would seem RT would be a better fit for him, with Newhouse then playing LT…

Newhouse is probably a year or more from being ready to start, IMO… He has to work HARD in the wt room and refine his technique alot. Kinda depends on how long Clifton last too… Having a couple LT prospects is always a good problem to have, if Newhouse really is the real deal!!!

by Strohman on Aug 31, 2010 1:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Newhouse is more of a “scouts” LT prototype. Longer arms, quicker feet than Bulaga just hasn’t had the level of competition Bulaga has gotten in the Big 10 (though going against Jerry Hughes in practice every day helps). I would love to see Newhouse evolve into the future LT and allow Bulaga to move to RT.

Newhouse vs Bulaga

Prototypical linemen are nice to have, but that doesn’t mean they will be a good LT for years to come. Heck, Jake Long and Joe Thomas have smaller arms than Bulaga and they aren’t getting too many complaints. Bulaga remains the more experienced LT, and he was after all drafted in the 1st Round. I think if Bulaga proves that he should remain as the LT, we should keep him there. That is the position we drafted him to play.

I think Bulaga, one of our better run blockers, should also remain at LT to provide a balance OL in run blocking. If we put all our best run blockers on the right (strong) side, defenses will recognize that and our running game may struggle at times. If we have Bulaga on the left side, we still have some unpredictability to our running game. Also, RE’s are traditionally smaller and faster compared to LE’s. Bulaga may have opportunities to bull doze through them while moving to the next level. I wonder if the coaches have ever thought about testing Newhouse’s abilities at RT, at least for the time being.

by Jabooty on Aug 31, 2010 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m sure the coaches will test Newhouse at RT, but he has better feet than Bulaga, so he should be better equiped to play LT than even Bulaga. Traditionally RT is where you put your better run blocking OT. I don’t think Newhouse will be a good RT, based on not being a top run blocker. With a couple years in the wt room that could change… I dont think Bulaga is owed being the LT just cuz he was a 1st rd pick!!! The better pass blocker of the 2 should be the LT and the better run blocker the RT!

by Strohman on Aug 31, 2010 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

If I had to choose between the 2 though, I would much rather have the better pass blocker at LT as opposed to the better run blocker at RT. So if Nehouse proves to be better than Bulaga at pass blocking, then I’m up for it. If Bulaga is better at pass blocking and run blocking, I want him at LT. All in all though, it’s nice to know that Newhouse is showing he is more than capable of being a LT in the NFL. I’m really starting to lose faith in Breno quickly, while I’m gaining confidence in Newhouse at the same time.

I really like Newhouse

I paid close attention to him in the Colts game and he impressed me. His quickness and punch with those long arms are his positives. But he’s a project and the powers that be know this hence picking him r5. He pretty much needs to totally change his body like u said but there is a lot of potential there. I personally would be thrilled if he were to overtake Bulaga at LT because bookend tackles=happy AR12

by sidtheelf on Aug 31, 2010 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

pathetic

I think it’s pathetic that Colledge has to have a competition to bring out his best. Doesn’t he have any pride? He goes back and forth from being one of the better and more consistent linemen to being one of the worst. Sure he gets moved around becuase of his athleticism. Can someone explain to me why that’s a legitimate excuse because I don’t get it.

by gern blanston on Sep 2, 2010 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. Smart move by McCarthy. We need Colledge to get back to 2008 form.
