Packers Back at Practice on Thursday

There was no practice on Wednesday, but two on Thursday, for the Green Bay Packers. The Family Night Scrimmage is coming up on Saturday.

 - Injuries were one of the major topics. It was announced that SS Atari Bigby will have surgery on Friday to clean out scar tissue around his surgically repaired ankle. He could be back before the regular season begins. Also, S Will Blackmon had problems with his surgically repaired knee, so they're thin at safety for the moment. But it might present a better opportunity for rookie 3rd round S Morgan Burnett. And Mike McCarthy told us to keep our eye on undrafted rookie S Anthony Levine

 - It looks like the knee injury suffered by undrafted rookie WR Jeff Moturi was serious enough to place him on I.R. The Packers announced the signing of 2nd year WR Jason Chery to take his roster spot.

 - There was some good news. Several players returned from injury according to the Journal-Sentinel:

Returning to practice were WR Greg Jennings (personal leave), G Daryn Colledge (elbow), Newhouse (concussion), DE Justin Harrell (fatigue) and LB Brad Jones (back).

However Jones did not regain his starting spot. LB Brandon Chillar is still playing with the first team at outside LB opposite LB Clay Matthews.

The other major topic was the continuing struggles, or recent struggles, of some players. I'm not going to read too much into any of it until I see those players struggle during the preseason games.

Backup Safety

With Bigby out, who is everyone hoping to be the primary backup Safety? Either that or if one does prefer to keep the backup Safeties according to the position of Free or Strong. This question was presented by Azreal 60 in a previous fanpost, but was never really touched on. I’m hoping Blackmon returns from his injury soon to get some more reps. I like the potential he could bring as a Free Safety, not quite sure about Strong Safety though. Derrick Martin has experience, but he’s really not that good either. This leaves us in a tough situation for depth while Bigby is out.

some thoughts...

Bigby…is he TRYING to lose this job? Man how does something like that just NOW get addressed?

Chillar/Jones…I like that Chillar is getting a shot. I like what he brings to the team and I highly doubt they are going to put Hawk on the bench so lets see what he can do at another position. It gives our LBs a little more versatility too.

I’ve been wondering this exact same thing to myself. I really just don’t understand how this could happen. The whole, ‘he hurt it during his conditioning test’ angle seems bogus to me. I’m sure he was well aware of his ankle problems but chose to hide them in hopes of getting that new contract, which by the way he didn’t and doesn’t deserve.

I would like to see Martin behind Burnett/Bigby and Blackmon behind Collins...

I also like Chillar better at OLB…Let Bishop be the primary ILB backup/ possibly Dime ILB…Chillar is better than Poppinga on a lot of aspects…Poppinga is a possible pass rush option and that is it..IMO

Bishop is better against the run, but has his inconsistencies against the pass. With that said, are you more comfortable with him being hte ILB in Nickel/Dime Packages? If we do get Bishop involved more, I’d much rather see him in the Base while putting AJ Hawk in on obvious passing downs “IF” Chillar does become our OLB.

Chillar is our best coverage LB and is athletic enough to be a decent pass rusher. By putting him as a pass rusher at OLB in the Nickel/ Dime, we are re-assigning our best coverage LB to a role he has not done full time before. I’m not sure if I go along with that, but if he does show some good potential in Preseason, then by all means if that’s what it takes to bolster our pass rush. I am definately not interested in making Chillar our starting OLB in the Base 3-4 Defense. I would much rather have Brad Jones lined up against the TE and ready to stop the run. I know that Chillar played a similar role to being a hybrid type OLB in St. Louis a few years ago, but I’m not sure I’m a believer in it just yet. I wish we had some more options as our 2nd pass rusher off the edge….

Options

I’m pretty sure thats what they are looking for… Options as a 2nd pass rusher! Jones? Chillar? OTher than those 2 I don’t know that there are any other possibilities. We’ll see what happens, but I have to believe that another pass rusher after Matthews has to be the No. 1 priority for this season and the draft. Matthews is going to have a target on him! So Jones or Chillar needs to prove at least competent.

I agree with you 100% that we need another option as an outside pass rusher

It’s just a question of who. We all like Chillar, and it sounds good on paper, but why did they wait this long to make it happen? I liked Chillar blitzing inside, but haven’t seen him attack outside yet. That alone tells me it’s not a sure thing. So unless he proves to be far more superior to every other candidate, I would much rather have him dropping back in coverage where he’s best. Unfortunately though, we don’t have too many options. I think Cullen Jenkins or Jarius Wynn are the only other 2 options. I’m not sure if Wynn is ready for the job yet, but he could be. Jenkins would provide a bull rush from the left side, but he doesn’t have the speed we would like to have and is so used from attacking as a RE, not a LE. Point is, I would prefer to keep this an open competition with the 4 of them through Preseason to make sure we make the right decision. I see too many people ready to crown Chillar as the LOLB or ROLB.

crown

I’m not ready to crown anyone anything… I just hope someone can take the role and produce! Jenkins I don’t see doing much rushing standing up. And certainly not Wynn!!! They will be involved in the interior pass rush, but not from the outside much. THe one thing about it is that Chillar, Jones and Matthews are all good in coverage, so it can at least lead to having all of them on the field and maybe in different postions so it’ll be harder to tell who is coming and from where. Any of the 3 could rush in any combination… And any could drop in coverage just as easy!

hopefully

a more stout Oline with a FT Raji will prevent teams from being able to focus too much on Matthews. Sure he’ll get attention no matter what but if the big guys up front are taking up all 5 blockers, what can they do? :-)

Brady Poppinga...

Hear me out, He was pretty good at DE at BYU…at the very least he is an option…And he has repeatedly stated that his main goal is to become a dominant pass rusher…Well at this point that is all i see him good for…I dont want Aj Hawk in on pass situation..And Bishop has been working at times with the 1’s in Dime’s so the coaching staff has to see a little something… ?

Poppinga

Personally I think Poppinga would be a really good ILB… Yes, thats Inside LB… He is really physical and if put in Hawks position would be a tough physical tackling machine! Problem is that all our LB from the old 43 D are all best suited as ILB. Some of them have to play OLB.

Poppinga was OK as a pass rusher at BYU, but has never shown any ability of that in the NFL. Wish he would but it hasn’t happened yet and it won’t… I know he hasn’t exactly practiced it much, but I’m sure if he had shown that ability w/ the Packers they would have utilize it!!! If it hasn’t happened yet, its not going to…

Yeah, this is good news. I think he wanted an extension or pay raise last year. Good to see the old timer can ride into retirement a Packer! The adage that TT cuts all old players does not hold true in this instance.
