Did the Packers have a gutty win like this last season?
I think they would have lost this game last year. Good to see them holding it together in a tough environment and battling adversity (only 3 healthy DLinemen, massive change in gameplan for Vick, etc.).

The San Fran game comes to mind
but that was at home. What about the win in Chicago?

The only one I can think of
Would be the game against the Dallas Cowboys in November. However, in that game, the Packers didn’t have to make a second-half adjustment like they did today.
And I agree that they would have lost this game last year.

We did lose this game last year
To the Buccaroos
Matthews for me, for sure
Nelson surprised, and Chuck was outstanding, but Matthews had all of the key plays. Following his sack on Vick with the stop on 4th down was the difference between a W and OT.
Other soon-to-be-underrated storylines:
- Penalty differential – Pack 2 for 15 yards, Eagles 10 for 80. And it should have been more on them.
- Conservative play-calling in the 2nd half. This has to stop – 3 scores is not enough to rest on in the 3rd quarter.
- Early OL play – what changed? Why didn’t we do that better to start?

4. Reid's terrible clock management
5. Vick not running in the TD

Matthews might be the MVP and LVP. If he doesn’t knock Kolb out of the game we might win by 3 TDs the way Kolb was playing.

It's funny you should say that
Over at BGN they have nothing but contempt for the way Kolb was playing.
Great gameplan
Had to contribute to the way Kolb looked as well. He’s got the talent but Capers must have seen something in the little game tape we have on him. Gameball to Capers for the first half. Thrilled we were able to hand on in that game despite getting Vick suddenly thrown on us. Its one of the few times that knocking out the starting QB actually hurt the team that knocked him out!
I am a little worried about the huge meltdown in the 4th quarter
However, I think that had a lot to do with (1) Michael Vick’s elusiveness (2) Having only 3 healthy defensive linemen available (3) stepping off the gas a bit with the offensive playcalling

Matthews was the only guy
who seemed to be able to contain Vick. How many times did we seemingly have him down in backfield only to have him wiggling out of the way of and past everyone else?

Raji missed a sack on him
And that was pure reaction from Vick – he sure didn’t look like a guy who hasn’t started in 4 years.

Shields didn't play well
He played a tiny bit better than expected, which isn’t saying much. Really when the Eagles finally got rolling and targeting him he looked lost. Multiple times.
Zombo was able to get a sack though and that was nice to see.
by PackApologist on Sep 12, 2010 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Not a sack
The Vick fourth and 1 was a straight running play and any loss would not be considered a sack.
well thats just bullsh*t. but thanks anyways :). and really? did shields play that bad? Well it was still an upgrade over jarret bush. which isnt saying much either…
Bush got burned once, too
It just wasn’t for a TD the way Shields’ blown coverage was.

Bad news...
According to Coach McCarthy, Justin Harrell suffered a “significant” knee injury. And Grant would NOT have been able to come back into the game, even with an emergency. He’s in a walking boot.
Cullen Jenkins also broke his hand, as was stated. He shouldn’t miss time, will play with a club on his hand or whatever.
Sounds like it could be season-ending for Harrell…
All info per Bill Michaels, WTMJ
Cut Harrel and pick up a HB
Very simple solution to the problem. It creates a thinness at the DL, but we are even thinner at HB without Grant.
by PackApologist on Sep 12, 2010 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions
I vote
Cut Harrell and pick up a DL. RBs are much easier to replace on the fly.
by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 12, 2010 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions
While that may be true
Right now we are one bad hit away from our only HB being John Kuhn. If that thought doesn’t send a chill through your bones I would check your pulse.
by PackApologist on Sep 12, 2010 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions
If Harrel's injury is "season ending"
why wouldn’t you just put him on IR? It still frees up a roster spot.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
Still cut him
cause then we don’t have to worry about going through this same crap next year. Just write up the papers and cut ties. If he comes back the coaches will keep him around next year again…
Great Game
They didn’t have all their guns blazing and still won a tough one on the road. Sucks if Grant will miss significant time—Jenkins nicked up too. Guys stepped up, Nelson, Jackson, Zombo. Matthews was the best player on the field. They outplayed the Eagles the majority of the game and deserved the win. Yes its Packer season!
I have a feeling they'll hold Grant out for a couple weeks.
Bills, Lions and Bears coming up. They’ll want to make sure he’s healthy for the tougher part of the schedule.

Nice to see B Jackson looking good after Grant went down.
Jackson has skills but has been knicked up in his prior seasons, and also has to play behind Grant. I’m eager to see him as the feature back.
No surprise about Harrell – I wish him the best, but it’s time for TT to let go.

His knee bent BACKWARDS....
It’s the sort of injury that makes any fan cringe…

I thought Kuhn showed some actual running ability. Atleast for a FB.
I don’t know how serious Grants injury is, but I doubt they bring in a RB.
Well sure as a FB running he's fine
Maybe even great. But we are going to become clipped as an offense if it just comes down to him. If Grant is going to be out for any length of time another HB is needed.

Maybe we can steal another one

The glass is way more than half-full.
One more thing about Clay Matthews today.
He had a huge sack as the Eagles were driving late, forcing Philadelphia into a third-and-long. They made up most of the yardage on the third down play, but that left them with that 4th-and-1 play, and he saved the game by stuffing Vick on an attempted draw up the middle.

Well, I think we’re all more than comfortable with Vick starting in the short term. He was awesome today in his own weird Vick way. Vast difference from the Vick we saw last year. But you’re right… They’ll likely sign a one week rental, because if Vick gets hurt, we’re not winning a close game with Mike Kafka, even if we’re playing the Lions (which we are).
If you have to put in Kafka
he might randomly pull out THIS sort of box score.

It sucks that Harrell went down [again] but I don't think he was a big part of their plan, anyways.

Game Balls
I give my game balls to Pickett, Raji and Jenkins. That was a gutsy performance with only four D linemen active to start the game and Herrell going out injured like clockwork. (I feel badly for Herrell, but if his knee is significantly injured, IR him and cut him. Hit the waiver wire.) The D linemen had their most consistent pressure on passing downs, Raji recorded a sack. Outstanding games by those three.
The fourth and one run call with Vick running between the tackles was one dumb call. Vick is not a between the tackles guy. He hit the hole standing up. Good play by the Packers, but Vick needs to get outside the tackle or run a true draw off pass action.
I don't understand cutting Harrel
Yes, I know, the guy hasn’t produced at all in his time here, and I’ve been very critical about his lack of impact. But he showed a couple of flashes today that surprised me. I remember one play in particular where I assumed it was Raji making a really nice push up the middle to force a hurried throw and was subsequently shocked to see the number 91 on the replay. The guy has talent.
Why not put him on IR and make him compete for a roster spot next year? What is there to lose?
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
because they've done that with him for the past 3 years
Oz on Swish HR celeb: "That's the way he is. Good for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do it for me, he was a very horseshit player for me.''

We prepared for Kolb, not Vick
Over the last week and a half we were preparing to face Kevin Kolb. When he went down, a guy we were not expecting to see AS THE STARTER came in and started from the 3rd to the 4th.
The defense was killed by Vick, but I think we did a good job adapting. If we didn’t, the Eagles would have won that game. Rodgers was not in sync, so it was up to our other players to step up. Kevin Kolb is a good QB, but we prepared for him, and only him. Not Michael Vick. Vick did an excellent job stepping up, but GB was not ready for him, and we paid for it.
Great game for our defense, despite what others may say. They made sure, or CLay Matthews, made sure it did not go out of hand. It was a challenging game, and I am glad we got this one out of the way.

also we were not keeping a qb spy
Well yeah, we had prepared for Kolb not Vick. Obviously they’re two completely different Qb’s. Blitzing Vick is too risky. If he manages to get away from it, he could very easily end up taking it to the house. All the blitzes Capers brought against him were calculated, and not necessarily too risky.

I'm worried about Dlineman
Looks like Harrel is out foe season, don’t know extent of Neal injury or Jenkins hand. The way our offense is structured a lot of RB’s would be serviceable. Our DLine is worring me
Yeah, he got injured late in the week. Had he not been injured he definitely would have been active. The coaching staff is really excited about him from what I’ve read.

He didn’t even play any snaps with the defense, but was out there for special teams. I mean, does he only get in on D if there is an injury? I thought Hawk was supposedly having the best camp of his career.

OK, maybe not ALL their picks…..
But, they’re very deep EVERYWHERE else – and aside from Woodson & Clay, their CBs and LBs are mediocre, at best, IMO – not to mention there’s little depth at both positions.

LB is a position
about which there’s so much debate.
Then TT ignores people’s opinion and selects the guy who he thinks is best for the team. Sometimes he screws up (Harrell, ugh), but other times, he hits homeruns (Matthews and Raji, anybody? Brad Jones?).

our special teams played well, which was a pleasant surprise
the exception being the mason crosby kickoff shank
Many of us talked about needing another back...
and now we see why. Man what are we going to do if we only have Jackson as a RB on the lineup. Sure Kuhn did have some nice runs in a pinch but I hope lack of running back depth isn’t the downfall of this team. That is NOTHING against JAckson cause I thought he ran admirably out there but having one back is BAD BAD news.

To bad some of the other LBs kept getting burned halfway through the game. But good job to Matthews today. That guy was all over it.
When life gives ya lemons, shut up and eat your damn lemons.
crazy game
injuries, back and forth, different facets of the game not going as planned…was strange.
The O was crap. Our line could fall apart at any time, the Tackles looked creaky. Special teams was great (wtf?!). D was very good but Michael Vick looked like the superstar from 5 years ago. crazyness.
Rodgers...and the Pack
He played poorly on the whole. We all know it. BUT we won. He missed Jennings long. Hit him beautifully on the TD. Threw the BAD INT late. But the Pack won. It feels good to see a victory when Rodgers doesn’t play like the stud he is. Good to see Zombo make the most of his limited action; almost all Packers missed open tackles/sacks on Vick…Zombo didn’t. Good for him. Anyway, a Win is a Win and let’s prepare to give a better showing against Buffalo!!!

Figured it was a little early to get an exact report. And I am new here so I don’t know what the prevailing opinion is but I really think we can do better at Left Tackle, I really don’t know how Colledge has a job with this team.
"I'm ok with being unimpressive..I sleep better"
You mean left guard?
That’s what Colledge plays. I’m not sure he had a terrible game, or at least not as bad as the rest of the line. More worrisome to me is the fact that Cliffy and Tausch looked stiff and old at about the same time.
by PackApologist on Sep 12, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Sorry I meant Guard
He got aboslutely destroyed on a few plays, gave up the sack, and got his requisite tripping penalty. I just think Bulaga can do better. Colledge is my least fav. player nesxt to J Bush.
"I'm ok with being unimpressive..I sleep better"
He is hated
But Cliffy and Tausch each gave up sacks too, on back to back plays no less. They just had the blitzer just walk past them….Tausch’s looked Allen Barbre bad.

I guess I just have more faith in our Clifton and Tauscher
even at their age, than I do in Colledge.
"I'm ok with being unimpressive..I sleep better"
For it's the same principle as why Farve is due to be bad sooner or later
Once you hit the wall it comes fast and hard. If this is the sign that they have hit it then we’re in trouble.
Dovetailing with this is the fact that we are shorthanded in a variety of positions. We need a DL with Harrell out for the year. We need a HB with Grant down for a bit. We need an OLB and at least one secondary person just because. If tackles are added on that…well there are only so many moves a GM can make at this point in the year.
That’s why I worry about those two more than Colledge. Colledge is very okay. He’s not going to make the Pro Bowl, but at least he can be some semblance of a starter…which is more than we can say for some of the positions mentioned in the previous paragraph.

You have to give
Clay a lot of credit for the W today. His play today was incredible. The last drive getting off blocks from an OL and the FB and making a play on the man that was evading every tackle.
I think alot of credit also should go to the STs!!!!! WOW doesnt that sound great to say! Crosby looked like his rookie year again! Right hash no problem! And then the long one! The punting game had great coverage on a very dangerous returner. Then to throw in what Jordy was able to do! Great game by the whole ST unit!
Agreed.
I think the improvement on ST, if it continues, can be instrumental in getting W’s over tougher competition.

Thompson needs to make a move, somehow, some way, on the DL.
Harrell may have a blown ACL. Even if Neal gets healthy, you need more than 4DL to get through the year. I think he needs to make a move at CB too, because now that there’s film on Shields and Williams had a solid game, they’re going to be looking at that matchup all season long. But DL is one injury away from an absolute crisis. Pickett’s playing more downs than he has in years (maybe ever) and Jenkins played most of the game with a club on his hand.

As far as DL goes
Philly has a abubdance of DLinemen if they would fit our scheme. It seems to me there down one fullback and we happen to have 3.
I was thinking the same thing afte Weaver went down....
… I thought they still ran a 4-3, but they had some 3-4 looks today, at least at times. We don’t need anyone special, just somebody to take up snaps and hold up against the run, preferably at DE (since Pickett can slide inside if Raji gets banged up, and since I’m assuming a NT would be more expensive to acquire).

by PackApologist on Sep 12, 2010 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions
What's worse is that's the right call
Basically that’s the way the rule is written. He needed to keep position through the entire process of the catch, and getting up off the ground was part of that process and he let it go as soon as it hit the ground. It’s supposed to eliminate those situations where the ground knocks out ball, but this situation also fit it and Johnson just didn’t concentrate or know what he had to do.
by PackApologist on Sep 12, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions
That needs to be changed..
It is ridiculous, the league is getting to a point where rule changes are lacking in common sense. All a running back has to do is pop the ball over the plane of the goal line before he is tackled behind it, yet the Johnson catch is ruled incomplete.

And the no penalty for pulling Brett Farve-esque sh!t should be overturned as well…

opposition
While we have barrels of fun picking apart every Packer weakness, anyone notice some of the “issues” our worthy opponents are having. The Cowboy heavy duty offense is still stuck in reverse. The Vikings offensive line has hit the wall Apologist was talking about. Only the Saints look credible, but not invinciple. Depth is a big issue on every single team out there. The Packers are in MUCH better shape than most.
