The Packers Running Backs Will Step Up In Grant's Absence

The Green Bay Packers were expected to place DE Justin Harrell on I.R., ending his season, but also announced that starting RB Ryan Grant will be placed on the I.R. and ended his 2010 season almost before it began. The other backs will step up in his absence, so says a tweet from Ryan Grant:

I believe him..

Don’t think its just bluster. Bjack showed nice moves against Philly. Kuhn is servicable for a few carries a game. And I think this Dmitri kid could be a steal, based on what I’m reading. And Starks is coming back week 6 too.

I’m still stoked about this year. But no more injuries!

by PackFaninFL on Sep 14, 2010 11:16 PM CDT reply actions

Bedard might be right but...

…did you read what he said about Zombo before the season started? Bedard said Zombo was still transitioning from a 4-3 end to a 3-4 OLB and he would need all year to do it and wouldn’t contribute much. Well, 1 sack already!

Starks may surprise, is all I’m saying.

by PackFaninFL on Sep 15, 2010 3:17 AM CDT up reply actions

But probably not.

The main reason he fell to the 6th round was concerns about his health. Those concerns so far seem to be justified.

by Jason Hirschhorn on Sep 15, 2010 3:56 AM CDT up reply actions

transitions

Zombo IS transitioning from a DE to a OLB. Pittsburgh usually gives their guys 2 full years to learn the transition. That isn’t to mean that Zombo can’t contribute this season or that he is the answer opposited Matthews for that matter.

I still think Starks could be the starter near the end of the season. Better runner than Jackson. It might take him a month or so once he comes off PUP, but in the last month, I could see Starks being the starter. He just has to get and STAY on the field!!!

by Strohman on Sep 15, 2010 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

That is a little harsh at this point. He’s in his first season of injury…Harrell is in his fourth.

by TrevorR on Sep 16, 2010 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I wish I shared your optimism Stroh

but while I think Starks has potential for the future I think it would be a minor miracle if he ends up being a huge contributor i.e. starting HB this year. I’m hung up on the hasn’t played a down of football since 2008 thing.

c'mon stroh...

Starks will not be the starter by the end of the season. He (may) come back week 6. We will MOST CERTAINLY know the state of the running game by then. Jackson will either prove he is up to it or not. My guess is that Jackson will step up to the plate. If not, we may give the new kid Nance a chance, OR pick up the Ahman Green of this year. Also, why do you think he is a better runner than Jackson? His college plays are irrelevant unless we compare both of there videos.
That being said, weirder things have happened…

by Jeigh AK on Sep 15, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

IMO

Its not the level of competition its about the things he can do w/ the ball in his hands. From watching the videos he had much better change of direction, instincts and the elusiveness he displayed.

by Strohman on Sep 15, 2010 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s really just about athleticism. I watched the videos as well, and Starks looks like a more fluid runner then really any other running back on our roster now. I remember reading that he was a projected 2nd-3rd round pick before he suffered his injury and missed his senior season. He’s obviously got some talent.

by packallday555 on Sep 16, 2010 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree…with talent, either you have it or you don’t. He was up against less talent but his team had less talent too…its about perspective.

by TrevorR on Sep 16, 2010 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

watched

I have watched both BJ’s and Starks’ videos… Jackson’s were a while ago, and I remember him being a good RB, but his running style didn’t appeal to me. I think BJ will do OK as the starter, but he won’t be the type of runner the Packers need for their inside zone run game. I have seen Nance quite a bit and he’s a better inside runner than Jackson, but he lacks the ability to take it the distance. Starks on the other hand is alot more elusive than either Nance or BJ, has much better speed to take it the distance and is the all-purpose type of RB that McCarthy has always craved! A RB who is effective out of the backfield, can line up as a reciever if you want, and is a strong inside runner that fits our ZBS.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but a big play or two when he returns along w/ modest production by Jackson is all it would take for him to get the nod… As much a matter of staying on the field, as it is talent for Starks though.

by Strohman on Sep 15, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

According to Bedard, he didn’t think Zombo was ready to contribute this year. He also said the same thing about CJ Wilson. In fact, he was higher on Obiozer, whom the pack cut, than Zombo.

Just bringing this up to say Bedard could be wrong about Starks. That’s all.

Off topic, but...

I will be flying into Green Bay Friday night for the Packers game on Sunday.

It’ll be my first time there, so if anyone has pointers on what to see Saturday and pre-game on Sunday, please post it here.

Thanks.

Classy tweet from Grant

I don’t think there’s a huge drop off from Grant to Jackson, but now the depth at HB is razor thin.

Selgy

by mittens on Sep 15, 2010 6:29 AM CDT reply actions

it was already razor thin…now its non-existent!

by TrevorR on Sep 15, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

The one obvious one

You need to go to the Packer Hall of fame it is the best any team has to offer and rivals the one in Canton. While their see if there are tours and then the Packer Pro Shop is a hell of a store for a fan and that is all at the stadium. I brought some friends to th pro shop and they spent 3 hours there.

Damn Straight.

Sorry to see Ryan sidelined, especially this early in the season, but Jackson is the man now. He’ll get it done.

Marshawn Lynch

It may be fate that the Pack faces the Bills this weekend as they there have been rumors that Lynch is available. Will last years starter Fred Jackson back and their number one pick Spiller starting I would hope TT has a conversation with the Bills GM. I don’t see BJack holding up for the entire season. I hope he does but he is not the pounder that Grant was. And for all the Grant haters you will get to see just how good he was this year.. unfortunately. Sure Jackson can fly around but he’s not a between the tackles runner you need in this division. I hope I’m wrong.

by ProfessionalGrade on Sep 15, 2010 11:24 AM CDT reply actions

Believe he'll do fine beween the tackles

Brandon runs much lower than Grant and to me he is more elusive, his weight of 216 on a 5’10 frame is more than adequate. He just now needs to go prove it.

by the yooper on Sep 15, 2010 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Steve Slaton

Everyone seems so quick to say Marshawn Lynch is the best option. As much as he seems to be a good and obvious solution, Buffalo doesn’t seem to be really willing to trade him or he would have been traded already-especially if they were offered a 3rd and a player as has been reported. I think they should look into Steve Slaton. He had that great year in 2008 with 1282 rushing yards, 9 TDs, and a 4.8 per carry average. Yes, he had a down year last year, but he had a decent week last week in minimal carries. He’s clearly not their number one option (particularly after Adrian Foster went off last week), and then should come cheap considering his talent level. Again, I would be okay with either of these players, would prefer Slaton because I think he has more big play ability, and am realistic enough to know that chances are we’ll get neither with TT as our GM.

by Brewcityhoya13 on Sep 15, 2010 3:43 PM CDT reply actions

good idea

but the problem with slaton is, he turns the ball over WAY to much. If theres one thing I like about BJack and Grant, its that they can hold onto the ball 98% of the time. But if we could somehow teach him ball security, he could be a good option. fat chance with TT running the show though.

by arodgb on Sep 15, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Obviously the turnovers would be a serious issue but maybe we could bring in Ahman then to work with him as a player/coach! Slaton has a ton of potential if he can learn to secure the ball. I don’t know that Houston would get rid of him though. I think he’s now returning kicks and is the emergency backup to Foster.

CLAY MATTHEWS HAS BEEN CREDITED WITH THREE SACKS FROM SUNDAYS PERFORMANCE> THE SACK THAT WAS ON KEVIN KOLB THAT GAVE HIM A CONCUSSION HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM KOLB RUSHING ONE YARD TO ZERO. id better turn my caps lock off now.

AJ Hawk for a running back

Had this thought on the ride home tonight. I bet you see this happen. Hawks contract and lack of playing time (read trust) would make a prime candidate for trade bait. If we’re serious about going for it all BJack and Kuhn will not be enough against the teams come January.

by ProfessionalGrade on Sep 15, 2010 6:49 PM CDT reply actions

trust?

Don’t know where your coming from w/ this… Hawks lack of playing time in game 1, was directly related to the fact that Capers used nickel and dime D the entire game! Hawk isn’t in those situational defenses due to not being as good in coverage as Chillar. Hawk isn’t in those situational defences. Had nothing to do w/ a lack of trust, just coverage ability!!!

by Strohman on Sep 15, 2010 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions

No way Hawk gets traded

Agree w Stroh that him not playing week 1 meant nothing at all it was due to us playing nickel the entire game. What else could we do we had 2 i can’t even say healthy(jenkins hand)DL.
And Hawk I don’t see any team trading for Hawk because if you trade for him. The looming $11m he is due next year would go with him.

by sidtheelf on Sep 16, 2010 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

He should

If he isn’t, he will get released outright at the end of the year. In which case he becomes a FA. I don’t see any teams lining up to pay him top $. There would be some teams very interested, but at a huge reduction in salary. He might get about 4M per in that scenario… Thats just a guess though. It could be less!

by Strohman on Sep 16, 2010 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I would hope he would…its 11 mill for one year or a long term deal with guaranteed money. I bet he’d love it, especially when its from a team that gave up another highly drafted player…

I am guessing it would be a requirement for the trade to happen…so if he wants to see the field more, he’d need to renegotiate!

by TrevorR on Sep 16, 2010 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

agree with stroh...

Not a trust issue. Just a coverage issue. Also, a productivity level in general i think. The other Lb’s played well against the run and pass (minus the Vick scorching, but against the Rb’s).

by Jeigh AK on Sep 15, 2010 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah trust

like “I don’t trust that one of my highest paid LB’s can cover a tightend over the middle..” Sorry that wan’t more clear. Trust is what it IS all about.

by ProfessionalGrade on Sep 16, 2010 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Thats about abilities...

Chillar having the ability to cover better than Hawk… Trust would be about him being trusted to play his responsibilities on each play. Which he is…

by Strohman on Sep 16, 2010 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

LOL

I guess coverage is not a LB’s responsibility….. Thanks for the insight…. LOL

by ProfessionalGrade on Sep 16, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Like I said. Its about Chillar having the ABILITY to cover better than Hawk.

Quite arguing semantics… Just cuz Hawk isn’t as good at something as another guy doesn’t mean they don’t trust him to play his zone coverage responsibility or try to cover the right assignment. Just that someone is better. Thats about ability not trust.

by Strohman on Sep 16, 2010 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Its nice to see…but honestly, what else is he going to say?
“The Packers are SCREWED! They won’t be able to do anything without me. Its over.”
