Around the NFC North: Vikings Get Their Man, Lions Have A Fantasy Star, and On The Bears Big Win
- The Vikings are 0-2, WR Percy Harvin has an MRI but it's just a "nagging kind of thing", so they need to sign a receiver to help turn their season around. And according to NFL.com, that player is WR Hank Baskett. And there was much rejoicing.
- I really expected the Vikings would go all in for this season and make the trade for WR Vincent Jackson. Apparently the Vikings are still a possible trade destination. Or maybe not. I guess we'll have to wait and see who's inside sources are better.
- Apparently RB Jahvid Best is "freaking good." My congratulations if you had the foresight to draft him late in your fantasy league. My sympathies if you were one of the many owners who kept him on the bench last week, only to watch him outscore the rest of your team.
- Over at Windy City Gridiron, Bears S Chris Harris specifically points out the great games last week by QB Jay Cutler and CB D.J. Moore. They made the big plays that lead them.

I did draft Best in one of my leagues…and did bench him last week…but still won. So, it would have been nice to start him, but didn’t hurt me in the long run.
Of course, that was semi-lucky. Many other people weren’t as lucky, either playing against him or sitting him and losing.
aargh I benched him and lost
soooo pissed about that!

First time at Lambeau Field
I had a blast in GB for the game! Seating location was pretty sweet too.
this report is
whts the big deal the bears won they should be 1-1 not 2-0. the lions are no threat to anyone and the vikes well even with baskett have no real threat at reciever so whats this article about???
Once Stafford is back the Lions are a threat.
The Lions won’t win in GB, but they may threaten the Packers in Detroit. They’re still about one or two good off-seasons from being a serious playoff contender.
Agreed.
They may play spoiler to some teams later in the season, too. The D’s back 7 is nothing to write home about, but their D-Line is looking fierce right now.

Any other insight you have on the Lions
Before the game on October 3 would be much appreciated!
I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Around the NFC North....
Most Viking fans are desperate at this point and want VJ, but agree that a 2nd and 3rd Round pick is too much. I would like to see MN trade a 2nd and another draft pick for VJ. They can continue to overpay their WR’s and give up draft picks. I am in full support of it. It’s not so much of this year, but they are kind of flushing their future down the drain.
Detroit fans are happy with the production of Best and their DL. They should be. They miss Stafford, but the point is they are happy that their team is progressing.
Chicago fans are still celebrating their victory over Dallas. Hey, it was a solid win. Why shouldn’t they? It’s Wednesday now and they still aren’t talking about their upcoming game against Green Bay. I like that part!!!!

Panic in Minnesota
that seems to be the ticket up there right now. I agree – if they want to “win now” why not flush the future down the toilet?

I'm not sure what you mean.
We will indeed have a lot of Packers related articles coming up very shortly.

*sigh!*... Not true.
.. .We’re just savoring a victory as a city. Nothing wrong with that.
I think the Packers haven’t had that type of game yet, so Pack fan look at this game against the Bears as their big game moment.

The Vikings are willing to mortgage their future if . . .
it gets Zygi Wilf a new stadium. I don’t care how much or little the owners make year to year, they make hundreds of millions as teams increase in value and the taxpayers get stuck with the bill. Except for the Packers. We sell worthless stock instead. And yes, I own some worthless stock and I love it.

You all need to...
Click on the “there was much rejoicing” link, if only for the pictures that are in the comment section.
Hank Baskett?
The same dumbass that couldn’t handle the onside kick vs NO in the Super Bowl? Well, I’d like to thank the minny front office for that move.
hmm...Baskett is a Viking.
Maybe I’ll have to head out to one of those games now, the Vikings might have a new mascot in his wife to draw people to the games…
I was thinking Favre would be sending her “pictures” soon.

Vikings still cherishing memories of Cris Carter
so they’re still trying to scoop up any ex-Eagles receivers they can get their hands on.

My question is...
Do I dump Percy Harvin from my team?
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." - Vince Lombardi
LOL
You really think someone is going to take a chance on Harvin? I don’t and wouldn’t…
I have a plethora of WR just waiting for Jackson to get off suspension and Rice to get healthy. I could be talked into trading someone though… Make an offer!
Yes.
He was intercepted at the goal-line. Wait, WHAT?

Wow
Even with such a small sample size (the much rejoicing link) I don’t know if I’d be able to stand that kind of writing for long. From what I’ve read on this site about the Daily Norseman it seems as if many Vikings fans are in “the end is nigh” mode at the moment.
I post there sometimes...
Not to troll – mainly to Favre-bash if I can. But I managed to piss off a poster because basically “we know we suck right now and we want to only read happy things”. That’s not a direct quote, but it’s the gist of his message. Yeah, they’re all doom and gloom over there…

Vikings fan gloom
It’s not like it’s a surprise that Minnesota doesn’t have any WRs. As soon as Rice’s surgery was announced and Harvin (who is a much better returner than receiver anyway) collapsed in practice, it was clear that the passing game was going to be in trouble for several weeks.
Are the Vikings fans on those blogs expressing surprise, or just self-pity about the bad luck?
You know it's bad when...
ESPN takes a shot at bert farve’s team. About the hank baskett signing: “… beggars can’t be choosers.”
It fits the ESPN narrative....
…to point out that Favre is saddled with sub-par receivers. That way, anything he does is heroic, and failure is not his fault.
Classic
So now Favre NEEDS a big WR so he doesn’t have to be accurate to be good. That’s good stuff. Hey Brett, did you have that guy in Green Bay? hmm…Javon Walker…..and……ok, i’m out of options. Whatever, he just likes his excuses. It’s NEVER Brett Favre’s fault. It’s a sin to think that!!!!!!!!!!!!

I happened to come across an article by Jason Whitlock
Where he suggests that if the Vikings start 0-3, Favre may just quit by using his ankle as an excuse. It seems relatively plausible that this could happen as it was pretty much Superbowl or bust for him and I doubt he wants to stick around and get his ass kicked while looking terrible.
I don't see that
Overall, I can kinda respect Whitlock, but at the same time, kinda not. In this case, though, I’d say Favre buying into his own press takes precedence over any outside considerations. What’s the better story?

I usually think Whitlock is a pretty bad writer but this time I kind of agree.
Yes, Favre quitting would seemingly make him look bad but do you think anything he’s really done since after the 2007 season hasn’t? He’s a media darling and he’s got a built in excuse ready with the ankle. Nobody will question him if he could get it out that his ankle is a lot more serious than expected. This is all very hypothetical but if the Vikings start 0-3, I see Favre at least considering it. He doesn’t care about the Vikings organization or it’s fans, he just wanted one last chance at glory, to end his career similarly to Elway. If he can’t do that, do you think he really wants to stick around for a sub .500 season and limp off the field at the end?

Whitlock
I caught that column. He kept saying “I hope it doesn’t happen.” But the premise is logical – if Favre doesn’t like pre-season, why would he want to play in meaningless games if they can’t make the playoffs? The media will say “what a warrior for trying on that bad ankle” and give him a pass. So, it’s not like he just “quit”.
Whitlock also says that since the Vikes play the Jets and the Packers (twice) Favre doesn’t want to lose to his hold teams. I’m not sure i buy it becuase if that’s true, that’s not the warrior that played for us.
At very least, he has to be privately wishing he’d stayed retired.
by gern blanston on Sep 23, 2010 8:39 AM CDT up reply actions
Was Favre a warrior playing (and tanking) for the Jets after being injured . . .
or was he more concerned with staying in to keep his record streak alive?

He was an @$$h@t...
And I’d be so sorry to say “You’ll get no sympathy from me!” to him if he goes down…
If anything, Farve’s play in 2008 delayed Kellen Clemens’s progression as a QB indefinitely.
