James Starks?

Anyone have any recent updates on him? How he's recovering? I personally can't wait for him to be able to play. I feel like he is just the kind of under the radar RB we need that will make an impact this season if he can come in and be healthy.  I like Brandon Jackson, but this guy is a freak. Enough with the Marshawn Lynch talk, the only RB I want thats coming out of Buffalo is James Starks. But an update on his status would be good.

Umm....

I don’t know about you, but if I had a choice I would go for the guy who was in pads and running last week rather then the one whose last time on the field was roughly two years ago…..and one we don’t know if he can even translate into the pro game.

by PackApologist on Sep 23, 2010 11:38 PM CDT reply actions

agreed

Lynch is a proven solid back. where as Starks is not only a rookie. but injured. and a big unknown.

by FFmorgan89 on Sep 24, 2010 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Makes sense, but...

I’d rather not give up whatever Buffalo thinks Lynch is worth for a guy with off field issues. Brandon Jackson will get better each week. We will be fine with him. All I’m saying is I believe Starks will surprise alot of people and contribute more than most think (IF he can stay healthy).

by JRD373 on Sep 25, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Brandon jackson is what he is. a solid 3rd down back. this is his 4th year and still hasn’t shown anything that lives up to Featured back status. its hard to imagine him doing any better than 29 yards against the BILLS. i have not heard much of Lynch off field concerns and he is right now the best option for a 3d or 4th round pick.

by FFmorgan89 on Sep 26, 2010 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Jackson

He has all the tools to be a successfull every down back, I think he just hesitates too much and waits too long for his blocks to develop. The problem is, we don’t have the best run blocking OL to rely on that. I think he’ll get better over time. At least this all happened early in the year.

So you think he has the tools to be a successful every down back

except for the ones he’s lacking that are, arguably, the most important ones?

Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"

by GoGregGo on Sep 27, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

He doesn’t have the tools in my opinion. He’s like a poor man’s Ryan Grant, which isn’t saying much. Not enough speed/agility, and he doesn’t hit holes quick enough.

by packallday555 on Sep 27, 2010 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Poor man's Grant?

He’s good at the things Grant isn’t and isn’t good at what Grant is good at.

by Omaha Sun on Sep 27, 2010 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions

He’s not really a poor mans Ryan Grant…I wish he was. Unfortunately he’s not even that. He’s just a decent pass catching 3rd down back. We are better off making Kuhn the starter.

I think this game shows us even more that we need to bring in a more dynamic back who can actually run up the middle and gain yards. The bears weren’t giving us many chances but Jackson lacks the vision to see the cutback holes that did actually exist last night.

by TrevorR on Sep 28, 2010 7:06 AM CDT up reply actions

if, if, if

There are SO many ifs with this backfield. I hate the thought that our backfield might be the thing taht keeps us from being a super bowl caliber team THIS year. If Jackson can stay healthy. If Starks can stay healthy, If Starks can perform. If Kuhn can become a decent carrier. Why not bring in a sure thing? Have you watched Lynch running for Buffalo? His off field issues are 3 years removed. He’s a STUD and can be had for Hawk and a draft pick…take it take it take it!

by TrevorR on Sep 27, 2010 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

hmmm

Well one hasn’t played a snap in two years and has never been a pro but is already on the roster. The other is a proven pro who could come in NOW and make a difference.

by TrevorR on Sep 24, 2010 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

James Starks

James Starks is on the PUP List. Meaning, he’s not eligible to be with the team until after Week 6. Last I heard he will be ready to go by then, but that was speculation like a month ago. I haven’t heard anything about him since. To be safe, I wouldn’t assume he is going to fix our running game. He didn’t play his senior year of college and hasn’t been in pads to this point. If he turns out good, that’s an added asset. I wouldn’t count on his services though given his injury history.

don't get that rule

I think it’s silly that he can’t be with the team. He’s injured, but that doesn’t mean he should fall farther behind the other guys. He’s not on the active roster, but he is under contract. It just makes more work for the coaches to have to get him documentation and the like.

Same thing with a suspension. The teammates are generally your support system. Those are the guys you’d want to lean on. To be banned from the premises strikes me as counter productive to a guy turning things around.

by gern blanston on Sep 24, 2010 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

You're confused.

Players on PUP are physically with the team, they just can’t play with the team until after 6 weeks. Last week Al Harris was visible on the sideline, and he is also on PUP.

by Jason Hirschhorn on Sep 24, 2010 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Correct

Players on the PUP cannot participate in practice either. Thus being why we truly don’t know what we have in Starks.

I just read an article on JSonline and found that out.

BTW of the three, it says Starks is closest to 100% but Bigby, Harris, and Starks are all planning to be ready for the VIkings game.

Just read an article on JS Online saying that Starks is 100% healthy right now. That’s definitely exciting. I like you, think he has a lot of potential. Let’s hope he can get on the field soon after week 6.

by packallday555 on Sep 25, 2010 9:24 AM CDT reply actions

This MUST be why they haven’t pulled the trigger on Lynch but if I am being honest, I think I would STILL rather have the do it anyway. He’s a difference maker and a solid back. He could press Grant for the starting job in the future and we could have Starks and Lynch be a GREAT 2 back combo for quite a few years.

by TrevorR on Sep 27, 2010 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m with you in that I’d like to have seen Lynch already brought in but obviously that’s not the case. I could understand wanting to see Starks first because if he ends up looking good, trading for Lynch could end up resulting in a wasted draft pick (we know how Ted loves those). I just hope we find a good running back here soon. It could really help the offense out.

by packallday555 on Sep 27, 2010 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

A wasted draft pick? It was only a 6th rounder though…

by TrevorR on Sep 28, 2010 7:07 AM CDT up reply actions

wasted pick

The wasted pick would be the one we trade to get Lynch… That would be a 2nd or maybe a 3rd if we throw in another player they can use. THats a little more of a waste, if you don’t need to do it!

think of it. Lynch for all intensive porposes is a third string RB yeah he has playing alot but Buffalo weather they admit to it or not. are show casing him. why would they need 3 quality start worthy RBs and why would they Draft CJ Spiller? so they have very limited leverage. and Lynch while i think is a very good RB is not worth a second rounder. Draft picks are very valuable now a days and he is not 2nd round worthy.

maybe Im overrating him then

but most any starting running back is worth a second rounder. if hes not then I hope TT gets the right deal

Look. Lynch right now is STILL the most talented back on that roster. They KNOW he’s not resigning with them after his contract runs up in two years and he has wanted off that team for a while now. They know they need to prepare for life without him so yeah they drafted ANOTHER back. Just like they did to Travis Henry and Willis McGahee before him. This isn’t some new thing the Bills have done.

Lynch was put at third string at the beginning of the season cause he didn’t practice due to an injury and they wanted to showcase Spiller to draw fans in…only it backfired.

Nothing you said proves he isn’t worth what the bills are asking or what they will get. Just remember the Bills have THE worst Oline on the team. You put lynch on a good team like the Packers and he is going to be a STUD. Trust me.

by TrevorR on Sep 30, 2010 7:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Its not a waste if Lynch ends up being the guy. Geez…he’s only 24.
Its not a waste if he helps lead us to a Super Bowl.

waste

I didn’t say I don’t think we should do it… Was just clarifying which is the wasted pick. I don’t know about a 2nd for Lynch. A 3rd I can live with, but a 2nd would make me pause. I’ve been saying all along that I would do a 4th in a heartbeat!

You have to remember that Buffalo has been starting him just so they can say. “See he’s our starter” to drive the price up. But everyone knows that He is really behind Jackson and Spiller!

Yeah, that’s what I meant.

Though, I’d be totally fine with him trading for a running back right now. We need one.

by packallday555 on Sep 29, 2010 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

The thing is, if he comes here and plays well, I might prefer him over Grant and quite likely over STarks. I know you (PAD555) are not a Grant guy and Lynch is that kind of multi-dimensional guy that do it all. He is NFL ready unlike Starks…I give him the chance to be the future back of this team. Starks would be a GREAT backup and we trade off Grant I guess (since he would NOT be happy). I think there are teams that would gladly trade for Grant and we could get a fairly high pick back in the end.

by TrevorR on Sep 29, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

i think Grant would be ok with him if it was a 1-2 punch type thing. may give each player 10-15 carries per game. im sure they would be ok with it

by FFmorgan89 on Sep 29, 2010 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind that one bit. (In fact I’d prefer it) I was just saying what I think is more likely, which is Thompson standing pat with Jackson and Kuhn. He’s too stubborn.

Just curious

In order to activate a player off the PUP list you have to make room for them. If we activate all 3, 3 players currently on our roster will have to be cut . Hopefully we can make a trade or a injury will make the decision easier. If we have to cut 3 who do you think it will be? It doesn’t have to be position for position but my guess would be Korey Hall for Starks, Peprah has been doing good things so I feel we’ll let Derrick Mrtin go when we activate Bigby. When Al Harris is activated I’m sure everyone will scream cut Jarrett Bush but I think he’s actually played well and I haven’t seen Pat Lee make a single play. So it wouldn’t suprise me to see Lee axed

What a boost to the team if these players come back healthy. I wouldn’t mind seeing Bigby being rotated with Burnett on running downs and Burnett coming in for obvious passing downs. If Al can come back close to the player he was that would be one hell of a nickle back. I’m liking how Tramon Williams is playing as a starter. Quite frankly were probably going to need running help hope he looks as good as the game film I have seen of him.

Just curious who you guys thought we’d cut

by the yooper on Sep 25, 2010 1:57 PM CDT reply actions

I think this is a good idea for a Fanpost After Week 5, but it's nice to get an early look at it

1. Derrick Martin. I’m not sure who’s more valuable between Martin and Peprah as in depth at the Safety position and Special Teams. Whoever contributes best on Special Teams should remain though, because with Bigby’s return, the odds of this guy having to play outside of ST is a lot slimmer.
2. Korey Hall. I would have said TE Crabtree, but he has been heavily involved on the field in pass protection and routes. I haven’t seen Hall engaged as often as in previous years. I think Hall gets the axe here.
3. Pat Lee. I was about to say Jarrett Bush, but I have to agree with you it’s Lee. Once Harris returns, barring any injuries, the odds that Lee or Bush will see the field are slim to none. The depth chart will look like this: Woodson, Harris, Williams, Shields, and Underwood. It’ll still be a rare occurance for even Underwood to see the field. Therefore, it boils down to who contributes more on Special Teams. In this case, Bush wins the roster spot.

by Jabooty on Sep 25, 2010 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I would agree with that list except

Instead of Korey Hall I would go Nick McDonald. My guess is that he is lower on the roster chart, not really used on Sundays, and might be able to sneak on the practice squad.

Really though my bet is Starks is put on IR (depending on how bad things get at RB) and Bigby and Harris coming back with Martin and Lee out in the cold.

by PackApologist on Sep 25, 2010 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I forgot about McDonald

Yeah, barring any injuries to the OL in the next couple weeks, it would make more sense to release him as opposed to Hall. I wasn’t too impressed with McDonald in Preseason.

yea bush beat out lee for the dime back and is better on ST. so pat lee is out. I don’t think harris will come back above tramon at least until very late in the season.

by jpulido on Sep 25, 2010 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

remember Grant is on IR and i think Harrel went on IR as well so thats two spots, Starks for Grant Bigby for Harrel (and as much as i HATE saying this Bush will keep his job) and than Peprah and Martin are up for grabs ( my guess is Martin is cut)

by FFmorgan89 on Sep 26, 2010 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions

forgot about Nance

So then a second one would be (again i wish it were bush) and i think they will still want to give lee a little more time, so my guess is McDonald.

by FFmorgan89 on Sep 26, 2010 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

You also forgot Wynn

He was brought on in place of Harrell. Those two spots are gone.

by PackApologist on Sep 26, 2010 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

if one guy was brought in and 2 people went on IR...

then that would mean there is one more spot left for Bigby/Harris/Starks. meaning i think Either Peprah or Martin get cut along with McDonald…

by FFmorgan89 on Sep 26, 2010 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Just found the roster along the side of the home page (I'm new here).

I count 53 players. For every player activated we need to cut a player.

by Omaha Sun on Sep 27, 2010 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Two were put out and two were put on

Justin Harrell put on IR and Jarius Wynn took his spot.
Ryan Grant was put on IR and Dmitri Nance took his spot.

They bascially found replacements for each position.

If we are going to bring any more people on the cuttings will start with some of the non-active guys or guys who just haven’t gotten on the field yet like McDonald and Lee.

by PackApologist on Sep 27, 2010 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Doesn't Martin have a reputation as a good STs player?

We went through the trouble of trading for him last year, so I find it hard to believe he’d be the first DB cut.

by Omaha Sun on Sep 26, 2010 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I think

Peprah also has the same reputation, although I’m not too familiar with him.

Jarrett Bush supposedly is a solid ST player, but kind of degressed a little last year (in my opinion).

Ultimately what it boils down to is who is the worst of these 3 players on Special Teams? I think Bush contributes the most on ST of the 3, so he stays. It always seems that Pepprah and Martin are identical players. Flip a coin between the 2 and move on.

by Jabooty on Sep 27, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Also don't forget Shields

If we are talking about Harris coming back that means Shields time with being the nickel will pretty much be up. But he will still be a valuable gunner and dime guy.

by PackApologist on Sep 27, 2010 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

True

Shields was after all inititially signed to replace Bush at the gunner role on ST. His play on the field though proved he can do more than 1 role. I think if Lee is cut, Shields and Bush on ST when we punt the ball is an excellent combo. Lee has been improving at that role steadily, but Shields and Bush are still better at it. Shields will probably go back to playing ST once Harris returns. No doubt about that. It’ll be nice to see Harris jamming the WR’s at the LOS again when he returns.

Right now I'm looking to stop hearing crap about the passing game

I’ve had it with the perception that our D is overrated and bad at defending the pass. I don’t know if it will take Harris coming back, Shields stepping up, or this team playing lights out against Cutler…but I have been impressed with the group so far this year (with the exception of them chasing Vick around like chickens with their heads cut off, but he’s been playing out of his mind this year).

Once they have that going for them we should be in great shape.

by PackApologist on Sep 27, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I like the perception our our D being overrated

That means they are overlooked while our D shines game time. Our Pass D is lot better because of our pass rush. It’s as simple as that.

Our Run D numbers are skewed a little. Had Vick not gotten the opportunity to play and run wild, the run D numbers would be better. Had Buffalo had a balanced offense instead of running the ball 9 out of 10 plays, they would have fewer attempts and less yards.

Our defense is just fine right now. I would like the CB’s to play more physical against Chicago’s WR’s though. Hester struggles with physical CB’s. This will also eliminate the short passing game that killed Dallas. Having to extend the plays allows us to get to Cutler in time.

Question from an outsider

What do you guys think about D. Nance? I’m considering picking him up in my fantasy league as a lottery ticket. I’ve been hearing about Starks, but week 7 is a long way away. Does anyone think Nance has any sort of a shot?

MM will split handoffs until someone stands out to him. Don’t expect any decisions on a starter after this week. He will certainly have a shot and right now he is just competing against Jackson so you could think about it.
