Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Greetings from Bleeding Green Nation

Hey everybody! The first game of the season is exactly one week away and I am so excited to finally see everyone back out there gettin' at it. As all of you know, the Eagles and Packers are facing off in Philly for week 1. I pride myself on being a die hard yet realistic fan and I see you guys winning the game some what easily. I have the packers representing the NFC in the super bowl so I am not embarrassed to predict a week 1 loss for my Iggles. However I do have some questions for all of you regarding your team and I would be more than happy to answer any questions that you have for me about the Eagles.

Star-divide

1. Out of all 32 teams, I think the Packers are one of the best all around teams in terms of offense and defense. However, there are always areas on a team that have room to improve. So my first question is what areas on offense and defense do you think need to be improved?

2. As all of you know, Donovan McNabb is now the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins and Kevin Kolb is now the starter for Philadelphia. I have gotten really tired of hearing people compare Kolb to Aaron Rodgers because the only thing that really is similar about them is the situation they were in before they became the starter of their respective teams. Rodgers has emerged a truly elite QB and Kolb only has two regular season starts. My second question is when Rodgers became the starter, what were your feelings about the change and how have your feelings changed since he became the starter?

3. When you found out that the Packers would be playing the Eagles in week 1 of the regular season, how did you feel? nervous? excited? intrigued?

4. Even though I said that I think you guys will win the game, I always have hope for my team and I do think we can pull out an upset if a couple things go our way and if the offensive line stops pretending to be a piece of swiss cheese. What makes you nervous about facing the Eagles and what do you think the formula will be for stopping the Pack this year?

Like I said, I am more than willing to answer any questions you guys have for me about the Eagles regarding players, strengths or weaknesses, etc. I'll try to answer everything the best I can. Go Eagles!

I think Bulaga has looked pretty good.

But he’s not going to start just yet. He was moved to LG to compete for the starting spot there but he got beat out by Colledge after missing some time due to a relatively minor injury.

BCB free since 8/24/10 and happier for it.

Bulaga

is learning the game from the sidelines as a rookie, and is our backup OT. He also has experience as the LG from Preseason. He played very well, but Clifton is our starting LT for the time being.

1. I don’t know that there will be a whole lot for us to improve on offense. Probably the offensive line will be the biggest thing but I think a lot of us expect the unit to perform well. On defense our pass rush and secondary need to improve. We need our defensive line to get a more consistent push, as well as getting more from Brad Jones who will be the starter opposite Clay Matthews. The nickel back spot for us is kind of a question mark. Many of us thought either Underwood (2nd year player) or Lee (3rd year player coming back off of IR) would step up and claim the spot but neither did. Sam Shields, who is an undrafted rookie out of Miami played himself into the mix and right now looks like the favorite to win the job. He’s got great speed and pretty good instincts but has only been playing cornerback for a year now, and is still pretty raw.

2. Personally, I was pretty happy about the change. It felt like it was Rodgers time, and after all the stuff Favre pulled that offseason I really wanted nothing to do with him. After watching him play I became even more excited. He’s a great decision maker, can make all the throws, and has very underrated escape ability.

3. Somewhat nervous. Like you, I feel like we should beat you guys. I think our offense will be too much for your defense to handle but in the back of my mind your explosive offense worries me. With guys like Jackson, Maclin, and McCoy you guys are a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

4. Like I touched on earlier, your offense worries me. It’s explosive, and is most effective through the air which is what I think will end up being our biggest struggle this season. I think the way to beat us will be too spread us out defensively. I don’t think we have the talent at the nickel and dime spots to consistently stop good passing teams. The best way to shut the offense down is to get pressure on them only rushing 4 guys. If you have to blitz to get pressure, chances are Rodgers will find the open guy(s).

Some questions for you

I’m sure you’ve been asked this a million times but how has Kolb looked so far? I’ve been impressed with him in the games I’ve seen him play in but the sample size is relatively small.

Also, how is your offensive line looking? I saw that you guys traded Andrews, and thought that I had read something about a somewhat interesting situation at center.

Lastly, how has your defense looked? Do you think your front four will be able to generate a good, consistent pass rush or will you guys have to bring more blitzes to get consistent pressure?

by packallday555 on Sep 5, 2010 3:12 PM CDT reply actions

Some answers for you

I have been asked that a million times but I don’t mind answering that. Kolb has looked pretty good. However, he played poorly against the Bengals and the Chiefs. He had no protection either game and was on the run a lot. He needs to improve in going through his progressions as well as his decision making. Everyone has been talking about how we are going to run a more prototypical WCO now that we have a more accurate quarterback who excels in timing throws, but the offense has looked pretty much the same to me. I don’t know if Reid is calling those plays because he feels comfortable with Kolb’s ability to hit the quick slants and dump offs or if he forgot that he traded one of the best deep ball QB’s in the league.

The offensive line is what worries me. We spent all that money on Jason Peters and I feel that he was somewhat average last year. He did play through injuries most of the season but he makes a lot of mental mistakes. Todd Herremans played well in his preseason debut against the Chiefs and should perform at a high level the entire season. Jamaal Jackson is supposed to start on Sunday which is a huge surprise to me considering that he tore his ACL so late last season, but I am definitely glad to have him back. Right guard is a question mark right now. We signed Stacy Andrews to a 6 year, 39 million dollar contract last year and he was traded this week (insert facepalm here). Nick Cole has been named the starter for Sunday but they recently traded for Reggie Wells who was a starter for the Cardinals so the job is definitely up for grabs. Winston Justice is coming into his own. He was solid last year and was the team’s most consistent lineman. When talking about the O-Line as a group, I have not been impressed and hope they can get their act together come Sunday.

I have been very impressed with the Defense so far. The Front office basically cleaned house this offseason and we are now a faster, “swarm-to-the-ball” type of defense compared to the big mauling defenses of the past. We are going to put a lot of pressure on the quarterback and force a lot of turnovers. I see us being able to generate a good 4 man pass rush but that won’t stop us from bringing the blitz. Brandon Graham has been outstanding during training camp and throughout the preseason and I expect him to make a big impact this year.

Thanks for the response.

Do you think you guys will be blitz heavy on defense like you often were under the late Jim Johnson? Or has your new defensive coordinator (McDermott right?) toned those down a bit?

by packallday555 on Sep 8, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I can't really tell right now

McDermott kept it pretty simple in the preseason. We didn’t blitz that much but idk if he was doing that in an attempt to not show what they are going to do during the regular season or if he thinks that is the best thing for the defense to do. In the end I think we will blitz just as much as we did last year, right around 20 – 25 % of the time.

by jdcvr6 on Sep 8, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

He'll definitely bring the blitz!

He learned under Johnson after all… I would expect the Iggles will bring plent of blitz’s early to see how Rodgers handles it. When Rodgers makes a big play to FInley or Jennings they will back off a little. But it is still a heavy pressure defense, so they’ll keep coming!

by Strohman on Sep 8, 2010 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

That’s what I figured. Seemed like Johnson brought blitzes like 30-40% of the time whenever I watched their team in past years.

Really, I hope they do bring the blitz. I think Rodgers will beat it time after time.

Some answers and a question or two

PAD’s thoughts are pretty similar to mine, but I thought I would give a second opinion in the mix.

1. I am going to start with a disagreement with PAD and say that I think the running game is probablythe most needed area of improvement. It’s not very consistent and the Pack will pretty much coming out passing from the start to get the offensive tempo going. It would be nice to see Grant and the line just assert control of a game and out power teams now and then instead of just letting Rodgers shred up a team. Also as an extention, but for some reason the Packers cannot run a screen pass to save their soul. This started when MM came in, and it’s one of those things that isn’t talked about too much. It’s odd cause we used to do that all the time and now the timing just isn’t right.

On D you can flip a coin about pressure or coverage. Our nickelback situation is twisting in the wind and we don’t really have a second rushing option to CM3. Between those to things it makes for a shakey pass defense at times. You could chose just about every third major thread around this website and see some full break down of this problem, it’s also the one thing you hear every body who picks the Packers to win it all mention as soon as they finish praising how solid the offense looks.

2. I was optimistic, but reserved about Rodgers starting. You guys actually had a very nice separation with McNabb, it wasn’t the bitter drag out fight that Farve had with the organization…one that started about two years earlier really if one paid attention to the growing divide between Farve and TT. As a result of that bitter divorce the fan base was split, those that sided with the FO (who supported Rodgers as a matter of priniciple) and those that sided with Farve (who opposed Rodgers as a matter of principle). As a result you had weird things happening all year that year with fans booing every incomplete pass Rodgers had in training camp to just giving him a standing ovasion after winning his first start on MNF.

I personally looked forward to it, but was curious to see if he could last an entire season. The first two seasons he ended injured after finishing up for Farve (against the Pats in 06 which put him on IR) and in practice when there was a fair chance he may have to start (taht was in 07 after the Dallas game). When he put together a very solid 08 and played every game I knew we had the real deal.

3. I was excited. I figured it would take a game or two for Kolb to get his feet under him. I was also interested to see if the fans of the Eagles would turn on him if he looked shakey to start. Sorry if that seems rude, but I know that Eagle fans tend to have very high expectations and sometimes short on patience.

4. Best formula to beat the Pack: Pass, Pass, Pass. Use the big play recievers and get in a shoot out. Also try to send overload blitz and prove that the O-line can stop the blitz.

by PackApologist on Sep 5, 2010 11:50 PM CDT reply actions

Forgot the question

How has the D looked? Are they still looking sharp on getting to the QB?

I know there has been change over in the O-line in recent years, are they gelling together well?

It seems like the Eagles last year lived and died by the big play, does that look to be the case again this year or is the offense going to have more consistency?

by PackApologist on Sep 5, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

The defense has looked good

They are generating a lot of pressure and have been forcing turnovers.

The O-Line still needs some work, more specifically on the interior. When all of the starters are healthy, they are a very solid group, however, I definitely think it is an area that could use some depth/improvement. We still haven’t seen all 5 starters play together yet so I’m hoping we will improve with each week that passes.

They definitely did live and die by the big play. Reid will definitely attack the field vertically but there should be a lot more dink and dunk passes which should lead to the offense being more consistent.

Some thoughts

1. I’m always optimistic about the Packers, especially so at the beginning of the season, but there are certainly areas on both sides of the ball we can improve on. We need a more consistent ground attack than what we’ve shown in the preseason. I don’t think itll be a major issue, as (despite his faults) Grant has shown to be a pretty consistent back. I’d like to see more performance out of our slot receiver position, but with the versatility of Finley I think we might have to wait a career or so. Defensively, I’m just echoing the above comments. Essentially our secondary is a question mark- If Burnett and Shields turn out to have the game time instincts they’ve been hyped on, we’ll be fine. If not, we’ll be playing Big 12 football.

2. My first complete impression of Rodgers came during the Cowboys game when Favre was still quarterbacking. The second he came into the game I was excited, and his performance in that game blew me away. Definitely made my side of the fence easy to sit on during the whole summer of Brett. I’ll admit I haven’t watched much of Kolb, if any, but I’m intrigued. I thought McNabb was a stud, and while I wasn’t surprised when the Eagles traded him, I’m quite interested how your #4 fills the role.

3. I’m scared. I know its a lingering feeling going back to years and years of strange games, missed opportunities, and underperforming, but every time we play the Eagles I cringe. I think we will win, but it’ll be closer than you’re saying. Jackson is scary fast, and to be honest I think Nick Collins is our only player in the secondary who can cover him at a professional level. I still wake up with nightmares about 4th and 26, Westbrook on screen passes, and McNabb scrambling only to throw a 60 yard TD. A blowout win for us would be just what the doctor ordered :).

4. See above, but on a more current level, I’d like to see our D stop the run early. When that doesn’t happen we run into trouble (see *Bengals 2009). It’d also be nice to know our players can hold on to the ball. I’m not expecting a world class performance on the defensive front, so I think it’s good we’re facing a first year QB on your end (at least technically). This year I’m looking for a true 3-4 look. I’d like to see Raji consume the middle, Jones continue his surprising play at OLB, and the secondary show some life. I’m looking forward to some energy out of the D now that the regular season’s started.

Addendum Question. Bulaga looks awesome against second teamers. I’m taken back to the game against the Browns where he was literally blocking DE’s with one hand. He’ll take a few years to develop, and I don’t think he’s a starter yet, but I’m excited for him to grow into the role he was drafted to play.

Maclin has looked good

He played really poorly against the chiefs and dropped a lot of balls which is really unlike him. But he looked solid in the other games and should be a very solid #3 receiver for your fantasy team.

Your 4 Questions

1. Our offense is one of the best, if not the best in the NFL. Not worried about that by any means, especially with our OL being improved. Our D was the best against the average teams to below average teams last year, but struggled against the elite QB’s in the league. The CB’s need to play solid and better than last year and we need to improve our pass rush outside of Clay Mathews.

2. You’re probably going to get mixed responses on this from Packer fans not just from this site. For obvious reasons, many fans were still very loyal to Favre and had a vendetta against Rodgers from the very beginning. As Rodgers continued to get better from Week 1, most fans became very fond of Rodgers, while the others became better known as Favre fans and have carried themselves over to the Vikings. Point is, Rodgers earned his respect from the true Packer fans. Some of us (including myself) stood by Rodgers from the beginning, which was rather tough considering all the love Favre had. How do we feel about Rodgers today? I’m sure you know the answer to that one! I would recommend you and your Eagle fans to give Kolb support, and hopefully he earns your respect in the long run.

3. Excited, yet relieved. As you probably know, the Packers have issues against Philly. LOL. It’s usually easier for us when games are played at Lambeau, but this one is at Philly, where we struggle mightily. On the contrary, it is Kolb’s first game, so he will be inexperienced. At least we get him and you guys out of the way early, as there is less game film for your Eagles to study on us.

4. The Eagles have long been known for their zone blitzes on defense. I think that worries me the most as Rodgers needs to get rid of the ball quickly and make accurate reads on the defense. The formula to beat Green Bay: Outscore us, by any means possible. By that I mean, you will probably have to score a lot of points. Please refer to MN x2, Pittsburgh, and Arizona from last year.

Kolb

I think you guys are going to be surprised by how Kolb acquits himself. I expect him to put up about 3500 yds and 25 TD’s at least! He has a chance to equal Rodgers as a 1st yr starter, IMO. I put my money where my mouth is too… I’m in a money fantasy league and wasn’t able to get one of the top 7 QB’s but wasn’t sweating it… I took Carson Palmer around the 5th rd as my starter, but I also took Kolb a couple rounds later as his backup, at least initially. It would not surprise me in the least if Kolb ends up being the better producer by the end of the year! I even considered taking Kolb when I took Palmer, but figured I could get him a few rds later!

What are the Iggles biggest ??? marks heading into the season? Beside Kolb… My guess is your OL… Will you be able to stop the run and how is your pass D?

Packer fans were more than 75% Favre when the whole thing went down… Most people by now favor Rodgers. Don’t let some of these guys fool you. The vast majority of them where still Favraholics till after Rodgers 1st season! I was among the few who were 100% in favor of Rodgers from the beginning. NorthStarr another commenter here will vouch for that too. He for me, and I for him… We had alot of lengthy debates w/ others that couldn’t concieve that the Packers didn’t take Favre back!

Good Luck this year! After you lose to the Packers I’ll be cheering for the Iggles to beat the girls and gents! And be keeping close tabs on Kolb for obvious reasons!!!

However, if the offensive line continues to play like they did in the preseason, it could be a long year for Kolb and my Eagles.

deep passes

are u worried the big plays will be limited because kolb is more of a medium pass qb?

by nfcnorth21 on Sep 8, 2010 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

Not really

Kolb definitely doesn’t have the arm that McNabb has but he has the ability to hit receivers in stride. There will definitely be less 50 yard completions but i’ll take a more consistent and balanced offense any day.

Most deep passes don't travel more than 40 yds downfield anyway.

Having a stong arm helps get the ball downfield, but a “bomb” is usually thrown less than 50 yds. And arm strength is more important on the short / medium depth throws into tight windows than it is for just tossing the ball some 60 yds downfield. Kolb has enough arm strength for all the NFL throws. Even the deep out which has to be on a line and have little arch. Kolb can make those too….

What kind of running game do you think the Eagles will be able to showcase this year?

by Vermont Cubs Fan on Sep 9, 2010 3:27 PM CDT reply actions

Probably a good, chance of pace running game. LeSean McCoy is the starter, who is a shifty back with speed. He’s best in open space. Mike Bell and Eldra Buckley are the #2 and #3 backs, respectively. Both are hard nose, hard hitting, and up the gut type of guys.

Of course, to have a running game requires running plays. Even with a new QB, I don’t think Reid going to start calling more running plays.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
