Open Thread: Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints

What will you be watching for in this game?

I'm wondering how the Vikings offense will work without WR Sidney Rice? Will the Saints defense be just as good without FS Darren Sharper? Will the Vikings injury depleted secondary hold up against QB Drew Brees?

You know

I almost am more excited to watch the Vikings get smacked down tonight than I am to see the Packers beat the Eagles on Sunday

Interesting game...

I thought the Vikings dominated the NFC title game last year BUT I am not sure they can hold the Saints to what was it, 220 yards of offense after regulation? 250 yards including OT? But on the other hand, the Vikings handed them the game last year with turnovers.

I think the Saints will win again but it should be close. 31-21 Saints.

by PackFaninFL on Sep 9, 2010 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, it's an interesting matchup.

I think it depends on whether the Vikings can get to Brees. I don’t think the Vikings have a prayer in hell of covering the Saints receivers without pressure. I’d run All Day down the Saints throats and hold the ball if I were Minny, but I’ll be surprised if Chilly’s got the discipline to take the ball out of Favre’s hands.

And just add...

the vikes are playing with Asher Allan at one corner and Lito Sheppard is the nickle?? yikes. I think the Saints precision passing game will let them eat the clock. But we’ll see

Wow.

Packers blitzed all the time last year and that did what for us?

If the Vikings want to only send out 4 receivers and the Saints have 7 or 8 guys to defend them, you gotta like those odds. Much better than 1:1 with Favre zipping it in somewhere.

by Danwood on Sep 9, 2010 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

The way I look at it

You don’t blitz unless you have to. Until Favre is beating your coverage, you do a standard pass rush.

Question...

Anyone think the Vikings are being too conservative in this game? They are going to finish this half with 3 points probably.

by PackFaninFL on Sep 9, 2010 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

They're playing it like the 3rd preseason game

Which it effectively is for Favre, just like last season.

by Danwood on Sep 9, 2010 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they really just want to establish the run game. It seems obvious that their passing game isn’t what it was without Rice too. Berrian is nothing more then an average #3 receiver. Definitely not a #1.

by packallday555 on Sep 9, 2010 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know.

Maybe, but I think that’s what i’d do too. The Saints haven’t stopped AP yet. He just got tired and was pulled at the end of that drive, and they kept the Saints offense (and the Vikes secondary) off the field for 10 minutes.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 9, 2010 8:45 PM CDT reply actions

OH to answer above...

Sheppard has been covering better! I think Brees is having trouble finding guys open downfield. The Vikings secondary is doing better since the first drive.

by PackFaninFL on Sep 9, 2010 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

I think a lot of that has to do with their pass rush. They didn’t get any pressure on that first drive.

by packallday555 on Sep 9, 2010 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

It must be.

There’s been a few plays where Brees had time (like that one) and he ended up dumping it off. I’m impressed. I don’t know how they’re doing it, but I’m impressed.

This sort of gameplan by the Saints is pretty badly out of balance.

There is no balance whatsoever. When you are one dimensional, they can drop everyone and their grandfather back into coverage and break up the long passes.

Look, I’m not saying the Saints should go old-school Wisconsin, but the way things are going, they BADLY need to use Bush’s 8 YPC to their advantage.

The VT play calling was HORRIFIC.

Worse than awful. Abysmal. Beyond terrible.

You never ever EVER pass the ball on a 3rd and long when your defense has shown no ability to stop their offense. The incompletion just made things worse for VT; they had to kick, and Boise went end to end.

The play calls were pretty bad also. I thought the Hokies had exactly twice as many rush plays as pass plays. The run game was a fail, the pass game worked. Nice one, VT. Way to set up a loss.

LOL

That’d be bonehead Chilly. “Well, the run game was working but I think I’ll try and establish the pass now.” He’s a terrible play caller.

Both really

Sure, his record has improved every season but so has his talent (by a lot). Maybe it’s just me but I think that has a lot more to do with them improving.

Kind of off topic but does anyone else wonder why the Vikings haven’t played Camarillo the whole game?

by packallday555 on Sep 9, 2010 10:16 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly

He has looked really good, and is exactly the kind of guy Favre needs out there. Berrian and Harvin haven’t done squat all night. The Saints have taken away Shiancoe and all the sudden Favre has no one to throw too. It doesn’t help that he hasn’t been very sharp with his passes this half either though.

by packallday555 on Sep 9, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Harvin’s not a guy who is going to be effective on the outside. He’s not a very good route runner. He excels when he can catch the ball in space. (aka the slot in the seam)

Wow, what a boring game

Anywho, it’s good to see the Vikings fans still need excuses to validate themselves. This time, it would’ve been different if Sidney Rice, Cedric Griffin, and Chris Cook were in (Like anyone is concerned about the last two)

by Charlie Kelly on Sep 9, 2010 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, too be honest Griffin is really no more then average. He’s improved somewhat, as he used to be other teams whipping boy in coverage basically. Sure, Cook looked alright but that was against the Seattle Seahawks, and to be totally honest he didn’t really ever get tested in coverage. The notion that the return of those two will make their secondary much better probably isn’t a good one. It’ll basically just give them two more guys who are good in run support and average in coverage.

Rice would have helped for sure though. Berrian is vastly overrated, and I think Harvin showed he is only effective in the slot.

by packallday555 on Sep 10, 2010 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, and my favorite stat of the night

Jared Allen – 4 tackles and 0 sacks. Overrated hillbilly goon….

by Charlie Kelly on Sep 9, 2010 10:49 PM CDT reply actions

Shut down Allen

In his first game as a Viking, he played the Packers and was statistically shut out (0 tackles and 0 sacks). He does nothing from time to time, but he’s done been just fine for the Vikings over the last two years overall. It wasn’t an impressive game for Allen, but he’ll have some good ones this season.

by Brandon on Sep 9, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Wasn't he pretty much shut down against the Packers

in his last game as a Chief, as well? lol.

I know he'll have some great games

Oddly enough they’ll be against subpar teams or LTs like the Lions or Darryn Colledge.

by Charlie Kelly on Sep 10, 2010 4:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, he will and most of them will likely come against average to below average left tackles. I mean 7.5 of his sacks came against Colledge and Lang last season right? Both guys who have no business playing left tackle.

Anytime guys can shut down his speed rush he’s virtually invisible during the games. He constantly over runs plays and provides no support in the run game, which was a problem last night. Especially since Pat Williams had a really, really poor game.
