I'm a diehard Lions fan that use to live in Appleton, Wisconsin but moved back to Michigan a while ago. I've always been partial to the Pack, obviously not as much as to my Lions, but I always hoped they would win it all because my team has been absent from the playoffs for a decade. I think this team might be as good as the 96-97 Packers that won the Superbowl with no. 4.
I watched that Superbowl with my family in Wisconsin when the then Brett Favre led Packers beat the New England Patriots. I bought a Favre jersey the next week and wore it proudly. The Packers were the best team in the NFL and had the best QB as well. They had the best offense and defense that year and definitely deserved to win it all.
After years of watching Favre win a bunch of games and beat my team every year for what seemed like an eternity, it was apparent in 2008 that his time in Green Bay was over. After he threw that pick to lose the game against New York, even I wanted Favre to go because he had a tendency to throw picks at the worst possible times. He was getting older and Aaron Rodgers was drafted for a reason. He wasn't ready to retire then and since 2008, he's been nothing but a drama queen and a publicity stunt for both of those he played for teams after Green Bay.
Ted Thompson knew when to pull out and he made the right decision to go with Rodgers when he did. Favre had one incredible year in 2009 with the Vikings in which he put up 33 TDs to 7 INTs, but the NFC Championship game ended the same way it always does when Favre is the QB...with an interception to lose the game. It was again obvious that Favre wasn't accurate when he had to be.
Aaron Rodgers is more accurate than Brett Favre is right now and has been for quite awhile. Favre made huge plays throughtout his career but he's also made so many bonehead decisions that he leads both categories in career touchdowns and interceptions. Aaron Rodgers simply doesn't make a lot of mistakes, takes care of the ball, and makes smart decisions more often than not. Favre has more years , accolades, and game time experience than Rodgers, but it's been a long time since Favre looked as good as Rodgers does right now.
I'm not sure that Rodgers will ever be better than Favre, because Favre has accomplished more than most quarterbacks to ever the play the game, but I'm optimistic that he might be at least the next best thing in Green Bay. Rodgers is just an absolute stud of a quarterback, and will get this team to a Superbowl sooner rather then later. While it was a nice run with Favre in Green Bay, he only netted one Superbowl his entire time there. Rodgers has the ability to match that and perhaps trump it if his team is as good as he is.
Rodgers will end up being one of the best to ever play in Green Bay and maybe ever. He's that good. Good luck Green Bay, I hope that you beat the Bears and win the Superbowl.
