Bryan Bulaga - What are your thoughts?
First of all congrats on making it to the super bowl! I hope you guys beat the Steelers.
I am a Buffalo Bills fan that really wanted the Bills to draft Bryan Bulaga, I have been following his progress through the season, to see if I was correct in my assessment of him. He has had some up and down times, but appears to really be putting it together come crunch time, despite OT being the hardest position to develop after QB, he seemed to do better against Peppers than Clifton on this day. You guys week in and out watch him play, so I wanted to get your thoughts on Bulaga with a poll on how happy or not happy you are with the Packers drafting him.

Definitely in the good category
He’s almost exactly what I would expect from him as a middle/late first round tackle. Made his share of mistakes, but overall was pretty consistent and solid. Nothing that made you think he’ll be one of the best tackles in the immediate future, but nothing that makes you think he’ll be a mediocre one either.
He's good
What keeps him from being great is his inconsistency, which you can come to expect from rookies.

I think the thing that impressed me most about Bulaga,
Was when training camp was about to start, he took the Pack offer so he didn’t miss any reps. He was more interested in playing than getting an xtra mil or two on his rookie contract.
Bills first round picks tend to hold out for an xtra mil or two and say “It’s just business”, then they suck and become busts.
I saw a good football player in Bulaga, he is not looking for a one and done contract like the stiffs we seem to pick. He was willing to take less to make camp on time and get a shot to play as a rookie
I think he is gonna be a good one for a long time. Wish we had a FO that could have seen that.

Yeah very good guy!
Doesn’t have a big ego coming from the Midwest. If I had to grade him it would be something like this: Pass blocking- B+, Run blocking- B-, Overall- B
The things that keep him from getting to the next level would be penelties and run blocking could use some work. Overall though, solid draft choice especially considering he isn’t playing his natural postion.

Really?
I would grade him higher in run blocking and lower in pass blocking. It’s tough to get a narrowed grade given his inconsistencies though. Although, I can definately see it being hard to give him a high grade in run blocking given the OL’s unit all together being less than stellar in run blocking.

He's definately a team first player
I was equally impressed with his ambition to just get out there and practice. Comparing his contract to Russell Okung’s and Trent Williams really makes me feel we got the best deal of the 3 when you compare their talent to what the team’s are paying them. Although I’m no expert in how well Okung and Williams have played this year. Bulaga has had his share of mental mistakes though, but I’m glad he hasn’t quit. He’s a fighter and is always working to improve in Practice.
I feel for ya on the Front Office and drafting. It makes me feel so lucky to have Ted Thompson running the team here. He really gets the job done in the draft. Sometimes we all wish he would be a little more active in free agency, but we trust TT because when he does make a move they usually turn out to be VERY good signings.
Speaking of draft picks, what do you think the future for Aaron Maybin looks like? Is there a remote chance of him getting better and at least becoming an average NFL player?

I will be surprised if he survives past training camp next year. Gailey stated he’s on the outside looking in. He was terrible pick, most Bills fans wanted Orakpo or Oher and didn’t like the pick to begin.
I think it is so risky taking Junior DE pass rushers that high, let alone a sophomore who was a one year wonder. Look at Mario Williams, he took time to t to the NFL with more physical measurable talent than Maybin, and 2 extra years in college perfecting his game.
I think Maybin is a bust for sure.

I should add...
…the one time he did play left tackle was when we played you guys! When Clifton went down in the 2nd Quarter and Bulaga did a VERY good job against Buffalo. I think he had one false start, but otherwise did very well. That was also his pro debut.
There are other guys on this site who follow the offensive line closely, but my very amateur impression is that as the season has progressed, it’s harder to tell the difference between Tauscher (the starting RT we lost for the year) and Bulaga. Bulaga has gotten better. He struggled against Peppers in the last game of the regular season, but so did Tausch!
Oh and the Packer coaching staff speaks highly of him as well.
I put him in the “good category” too, but with a definite upside.
the one time he did play left tackle was when we played you guys!
I know, he shut Kelsey right down, Kelsey is awful, and what do the Bills do this year? Give him a 4 year extension…..it isn’t easy being a Bills fan. That’s when I really started hating the Spiller pick. I didn’t like it to start, but after watching the season play out, It just reaffirms my position that Bulaga was the right pick for the Bills at 9, a safe pick, not a boom or bust like Spiller. A quality LT at best, and a solid RT at worst, not flashy, but safe.
Bulaga played like 1 play at LT against the Falcons too at the beginning of the game if I am right? I seem to recall the announcers pointing it out.

Sure, when he doesn’t fumble it, he had 1 return for a TD.
if yes, who do you want for him?
I would trade him for Bulaga in a heartbeat, since that is the pick we should have made instead of Spiller.

Draft & Kick Returning
Packers really should look to draft a return man. Noel Devine may suffice in the late rounds, but I’d love to see the Pack draft Torrey Smith in the 2nd round if he’s available.
If I read the poll question correctly,
we were being asked not how we would grade Bulaga, but how we feel about the Packers having drafted him.
If the former, I would have voted for ‘good’, but, since it was the later, I had to vote (based on his future potential, rather than just on how he played this year) for great!

Are you FROM Buffalo?
If so, I’d like to turn the tables and ask you for your opinion of James Starks.

Sure Am.
Starks was a good back for UB, probably would have gone higher if not for the missed time.
He’s getting a lot of play time on the evening news. I saw his brother on the local news the other day, talking about how surreal his brother is 1 game away from a super bowl and watching him play. A nice story so far, many people are pulling for the Pack hoping Starks gets a ring.

One of the writers here labeled him "the human penalty"
a few weeks back. Yesterday, he wasn’t penalized at all despite going up against Julius Peppers and Idonije.
I think he's going to turn out just fine
Bulaga has been a bit up and down so far this year, and opinion of him has gone up and down as well. I still remain optimistic about him though. His penalties have gone down some, and he’s struggled a bit at times as well (typically against some of the most elite pass rushers in the league). For a rookie to even hold is own against these guys is phenomenal, so him struggling a bit is to be expected. The penalties are also to be expected and have tended to drop as the playoffs have gone on. Over all I’m pleased.
I also still think he’s got a great chance to take that LT spot once Clifton is really done. Right now I think he stayed on the RT spot more for consistency than anything else. Hopefully he can get some good reps in at LT next training camp and really find a home there. If not he should be an excellent anchor on the right side and allow Lang to take over for Colledge at LG.
On a different note, I remember on draft day being shocked when Buffalo went for Spiller. I thought it was the first real surprise of the draft, and gave me hope that the Packers could get a quality tackle. Really I expected you guys to take Bulaga and rebuild the line a bit.
Here’s hoping you guys can turn it around, the Bills are one of those franchises I have a soft spot for….and thanks for stopping by.
Clifton
I was just thinking about Cliffy yesterday. Many of us fans think he’s done and should retire after the Superbowl, but does the team and Cliffy think he’s done? I would like to sign LT Jared Gaither, but seeing that he’ll likely go early in Free Agency and is already injury prone, I don’t see that being likely. This is kind of a pickle. Do you really give up on Clifton, who has had a fairly decent season for us?

Two schools of thought
What was it Ron Wolf used to say? It’s better to give up on a player one year too soon than one year too late.
By no means am I advocating for Cliffy to hit the door. Pro Bowl LT don’t just grow on trees. However he has more seasons behind him than in front of him. Right now He’s got one or two more years under contract after this year, I would let him compete for for the starting spot again and see what Bulaga can do with an offseason of training and then go from there. Not a great long term vision to be sure, but it gives Clifton the respect he deserves with the realism that he’s not long for this league either.

If he wants to stay as LT backup, that would be amazing
because hes signed for basically nothing over the next two years

Cliffy
I think he has one more good starting season left in him. Bring him back next season to start at LT again, then if he wants to stay as a backup in the last year of his contract that would be great! Let Bulaga or another drafted LT take over after next season. Bulaga can play RT one more season!
The thing we don’t know right now is how well Newhouse had been at LT in practice all season. His development would make it less likely we need to draft a OT!
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Now what I want to know.....
Is who is the one person who voted poor? Is there really that one singular Packer fan who who somehow thinks Bulaga is a Justin Harrell-level disappointment, or (more likely) is it a random troll like R4F who decided he’d throw in a vote for the worst option, as if that would do something?
Bulaga has his critics
There are still many around here who think we should of went with a OLB to work with Clay Matthews instead of a tackle who will probably not work out to be a LT and had stubby arms. Personally I think that tackles are a high enough need that investing a late first round pick in a guy who will work out on either end is more than okay by me. Especially considering in 09 it was Cliffy, Tausch, and prayers. That’s it. Now at least we have some youth and talent at that position to help bolster our ranks.
by PackApologist on Jan 24, 2011 4:04 PM CST up reply actions
I think he was the right choice
Which OLB made a impact, I know one person always on this board screamed draft Jerry Hughes. From what I’ve read in Indianapolis some are already considering him a bust. Where would we have been without Bulaga.
Hughes
That was me screaming for Hughes prior to the draft. But when the pick came I wanted Bulaga. I never thought he would fall to us, and when he did it was a no-brainer!
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
My point was, in Ted I trust
Many people wanted a OLB because they thought that would be the immediate help we needed to get us over the top. Maybe they thought that because hell look at Clay Matrthews, that kinda impact rarely happens rookie year. They knew we already had the players to get the pass rush and OLB was not a big worry(not that I wouldn’t want a Woodley, Harrison_Matthews ?) , Bulaga was no all pro this year just think he was the right choice, if not for a couple injuries the whole draft would have looked like the right choice and I’m sure it will still to prove to be so.
Well, as Strohman said,
nobody really expected Bulaga, or any other first round quality tackle, to fall to us — in which case, an OLB would probably have been the best choice.
The glass is full!
I'd rather be correct, than politically correct.
I'd rather be right.
The Bears still suck!
Ted felt there wasn't much need for one
If there was a need for one don’t you think he would have picked one in the next 6 rounds
if Walden/Zombo can sustain their play
Then TT made the right call drafting a tackle. I don’t know what everyone else thinks, I really think Walden or Zombo could turn into a nice compliment across from Matthews.
Not necessarily.
The first two linebackers drafted, Rolando McClain & Sean Weatherspoon, were already gone when we drafted Bulaga.
The next five taken (Koa Misi, Sergio Kindle, Daryl Washington, Jermaine Cunningham & Sean Lee), (along with Jerry Hughes) all were there when Bulaga fell into our laps, but were gone when our turn came up again.
We drafted a likely beast in Mike Neal.
Brandon Spikes & Pat Angerer were available then, but were gone when we traded up to draft Morgan Burnett in the third.
After that, we didn’t pick again until the fifth round.
It looks to me not like a case of “If there was a need for one,” but more a case of ‘If there was a need for one of the ones that were still available’ at the time of each pick.
The answer was no, each and every time, and that is why Mr. Thompson didn’t pick one in the next 6 rounds.
The glass is full to the brim!
I'd rather be correct, than politically correct.
I'd rather be right.
The Bears still suck!
I was hopeful we could get Bulaga
but that was because mocks had him going INSANELY high (5 to KC? 6 to Seattle? 7 to Cleveland?)

Solid...
But i am biased…but just remember he is one of the youngest people in the NFL turning 21 during the season. He will develop into a great player
I'd still like GB to draft a LT in the next year or two.
I think Bulaga may end up at RT and Clifton’s getting awfully old.
