Clay Matthews: First Team All-Pro

The AP released it's All-Pro team, and the only member of the Green Bay Packers on the first team was LB Clay Matthews. I don't watch a lot of football other than Packer games, so I'm not an expert on who should or shouldn't be an All-Pro. But this list does seem like a popularity contest.

The worst part is the eight-way tie for second team All-Pro safety alongside FS Nick Collins. It's like they decided to randomly pick a quarter of the starting safeties in the NFL. Does anybody believe that FS Darren Sharper still can play after microfracture surgery? He appeared to have nothing left in the tank during that playoff loss to the Seahawks.

It's interesting to see two former Packers on the first team All-Pro list. I wasn't a big fan of FB Vonta Leach when he was with the Packers. For every devastating lead block he made in 2005, he seemed to whiff on another one. He's apparently put it all together with the Texans. And K Billy Cundiff spent a training camp with the Packers in 2006 before he was released in favor of K Dave Rayner.

Any vote like that is likely to be a popularity contest.

Just to pick one example: Is Steve Hutchinson or Rich Seubert better? Outside of people who closely follow those teams (Vikings and Giants, respectively), I doubt many people know who they are, much less can provide a meaningful comparison.

Interesting.

I find it fascinating that Tom Brady was the ONLY QB selected. By which I mean he swept the votes, and there was no Second-Team QB. I would have thought somebody would have thrown in a vote for Vick or Manning or Rodgers at some point.

It's nice to get the attention, but.....

WHO CARES!

The SB trumps all this other BS. Every player on this list would gladly trade it in for a chance to get a ring.

Definitely a popularity contest. I think Lloyd or Jennings could easily replace Wayne on that list. Both have near equal, or better yardage than Wayne, and both had nearly double his TD’s. No Tramon Williams on either team? That’s a shame.
