Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Wait, What? A Steeler Fan Already?

What's up Cheese Heads, congrats on an awesome win over the Bears Sunday. I loved seeing Cutler take himself out of the game, proved to me that he has all the tools but doesn't have the cojones (so to speak).

Anyway, I know this is early as hell and both fanbases are still prolly a little bit fired up from the weekend. However with this being Superbowl time, there is much to discuss and lots of banter to be had.

So I offer myself to you as a source of knowledge all things Steeler related, and will do my best to answer any questions you may have regarding the game, or just about our team in general.

I also ask to try to keep it civil, think through what you're saying before you hit post, these things can go south quickly.

Before starting things out....

I know I swung by Behind the Steel Curtain and said this, but it’s awesome that the Packers are playing the Steelers for it all. Really there aren’t many AFC teams that could have the tradition and class as an organization to make this a cool game, especially following up beating the Bears in the NFC Championship, but the Steelers are definitely in that group. I also think the teams match up pretty well as well.

Here’s hoping that we have a good conversation here and great game in about two weeks!

Totally Agree.

I also think it’s a nice slap in the face to Roger Goodell, On Sunday all 4 teams proved that no matter what rules are put in place, defense still wins championships. On top of that we are all outdoor, cold weather teams, snuffing his “Dome is home” crap for the Superbowl.

I can’t wait for this game!

There won’t be any beatdown on the Pack! ; ) Thanks for stopping by man. It’s early, but heck, if this gets lost in a week, start up another one next week. We have 2 weeks to talk about this game. Unless you want to discuss a Packerless and Steelerless Pro Bowl…..

Loving this

All Goodell’s pretty boys failed him. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and his redeemed child Michael Vick. Defensive teams made the conference titles, and every game was a defensive struggle.

Excuse my language, but Fuck you Roger Goodell. This is real football right here. Two of the most heralded franchises in history, each with smashmouth, cold weather, old school approaches, proving to you that you cannot kill football with your high scoring, flashy, let the Quarterbacks jersey stay clean all day shit.

This will be one of the best Superbowls in recent memory, and the Packers and Steelers are going to punch you right in your dentures.

Great game ahead of us

I am looking forward to the game in Dallas. Two teams with great defences. Their offences led by two great QBs. I wasn’t ready to call Rodgers great till I saw him get up, dust himself off and keep playing after the first td against the Bears on Sunday. That took a lot of toughness and character. I already knew he had a lot of skill.

btw. There is a great analysis of the NFL defences for 2010 over on BTSC. John Stephens has done an excellent job, imo, of giving a more meaningful analysis of what it takes to be a great defence.

That’s some quality analysis! Too long and too complicated for the dumbed-down world of ESPN but that’s the kind of stuff I look for. I’d always wanted more academic/intelligent analysis but it’s really hard to find that kind of thing for football fans.

Three times in my life (b. 1978) I’ve watched teams play some seriously stifling defense and said to myself, “That team is going to win the Super Bowl.” That was Baltimore in 2000, and Pittsburgh in 2008 and this last year. I hope I’m wrong this time around.

Have you read anything at the SB Nation Missouri blog Rock M Nation?

They do some really cool advanced stats based on two concepts – success rate and points per play. It can be very revealing in getting at aspects of defense (and offense) that might not otherwise jump off the page.

To be more clear.

Is that the model for a game plan or was it just an off game?

by Zorakathura on Jan 25, 2011 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

Both to be honest.

Our entire team played terrible for most of that game, which obviously contributed to us getting our asses handed to us. So that was probably why we got beaten.

However we know that our D struggles against a West Coast style of offense because we aim to take away the run game and the big play. Due to this a team utilising short passes with a great QB can move the ball effectively against us, I say great QB because normally a mediocre QB makes enough mistakes to allow us to limit their scoring, see Flacco, Joe.

When we played the Steelers

They definitely stopped the run, but as Josh mentions, Brees was able to gain yards with short passes. If Rodgers has an accurate game and gets the ball off quick it can exploit the Steelers D. But that won’t be enough. Your D will have to play lights out to keep the Steelers offense in check.

This is going to be a heck of a game.

by Grumps on Jan 25, 2011 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

This is what worries me

Last year we had a shootout, and we had an offense that featured a lot of quick passes. This year we have more vertical passing routes and it seems like Rodgers waits for the play to develop. This is a concern I have and I hope McCarthy adjusts to this, recognizing that beating the Steelers will have to be through mostly quick passes.

No, the bad part

from my perspective, at least, is out o-line is 80% mediocre, and will almost certainly be handled by your DL and OLBs, and offenses can’t function very well without at least surviving the battle up front.

eh…I think we were especially vulnerable with them because they have 2 pretty solid TEs and some good pass catching RBs. Teams with strong WRs haven’t performed all that great against us, our corners can hold their own with anyone (just ask Roddy White). Teams with strong receiving RBs and TEs give us troubles. Just look at what Forte did last week. He was almost the only guy that touched the ball for the Bears.

My first question for this thread

Who is the nickel and dime backs for the Steelers and how do you think they would match up with James Jones and Jordy Nelson?

by PackApologist on Jan 25, 2011 12:59 PM CST reply actions

Willie Gay is our nickel, and he is a very good nickel backer. He matches up well with both of those players, but less so with Nelson who is a touch taller than Gay should be matched up with.

Dime back is Madison who I really see as average, in every sense of the word. He just does his job and doesn’t mess up too bad. He can handle most 4th WR’s well enough.

Madison

is probably below average actually…he’s the dime back because Kenaan Lewis is either still too raw or just plain sucks (likely).

A 4 or 5 receiver set can be especially deadly against our defense, assuming the QB has time to throw.

Closet Steelers Fan

My earliest memories of even being aware of football, before my family moved to Wisconsin, include being a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I remember that my older brother liked the Cowboys and I liked the Steelers. I have no idea why. I would draw their logo over and over.

Later on, I finally saw the light and became a Packer fan. But you cannot shake early childhood fandom, no matter how irrational it was. I certainly do not have any conflict about who I want to win — it’s the Packers all the way. Instead, this just makes it all the more exciting to me to see these two teams meet in the Super Bowl.

I can’t believe I’m defending a BEAR. Seriously, do you really know what happened? What the coaches told him, or medical staff? What he said to them? I disagree with his body language, he sure lookedlike a quitter, but to say he pulled himself and kept himself from the game without knowing is just flaming the man, unless you know something I (we) don’t?

I've been through an MCL sprain

Happened in the middle of a game of the other football. I took a routine cut left and my knee went “pop!” and I hit the turf. As the play was happening on the other side of the pitch (as it often was – I played right forward, and we weren’t very good), I kinda sat there for a minute and then got up and hopped over to the sideline. As I was sitting on the bench, I started carefully flexing my knee. The pain subsided and things felt mostly normal. Maybe a little loose, but not like I was seriously injured, so I stood and even jogged a bit in a straight line – all good.

So I waited for the next whistle and put myself back in. I was out there for about two minutes before I made another cut. Guess what? Same “pop!”, same quick trip to the ground. I took myself out for the rest of the game – no way I could play if I couldn’t make a play so routine.

That same “pop!” happened to Cutler, only it happened on his plant leg, and he tried to go out there again and play on it. One plant, one throw (incomplete), and I’m sure it was as obvious to him that he couldn’t play anymore as it was to me mumble years ago. Sure, you can walk on it, or ride the bike, but the moment you try to make a lateral move that the MCL is supposed to contain, you are reminded that you’re hurt in a not so nice way.

The major issue I think people had was that he looked so disinterested afterward. He sat by himself – he wasn’t chatting with his backup(s), nor did he grab a clipboard, or throw on a headset. It was like he was saying, “Well, if I can’t play, then I just don’t care about this game anymore.” Whether that’s true or not, his previous aloofness helped people believe it. And that’s why you engage the media as if they were the fans and not a necessary evil – because when they crucify you, fairly or unfairly, others are gonna believe ‘em. And then they’ll see your game-ending injury as you having no guts and your anguished inability to look your teammates in the eyes after failing them as you having no heart.

Actually the showed Cutler talking to Hanie

Going over some photo stuff, formations, etc… So he helped hanie a little anyway. We don’t know how much he helped if it was after every series, or only the once!

As far as the MCL, everthing you said is spot on to what I learned in Athletic Training classes. Your fine moving straight, but can’t make any sudden cuts on that knee. Obviously I can’t stand Cutler, but I’m not bashing him for not being able to play!

Negative Personality....

This is why Cutler got crucified…fairly or unfairly. Frankly, I couldn’t care one way or the other if he was able to play or not. His apathy for the fans and media both attributed to the criticism. His “its not my fault” attitude during games when things go south also added to it. Simply put, he gets no respect from the fans or fellow players. His team defended him (they’re supposed to), but he’s not a leader in Chicago.

I feel bad for him, but I can understand why people immediately questioned his integrity to the game.

My POV

If you can stand and walk around, you can still play QB. Phillip Rivers did it on a torn knee. Its the NFC Championship of all things. Shotgun plays take the pressure off and his arm was still ok to throw. Him with a buggered knee still offered Chicago the best chance at winning that game, regardless of Hanies late game heroics

His arm: yes

The knee on his plant leg: no. Have you ever tossed around the pigskin? Ever told a buddy to “go deep”? Think about your body’s configuration when you’re lining up that deep pass; think about your various limbs – where does the power come from? Hint: It ain’t your arm.

Cutler with full mobility got knocked around back there. Cutler with no mobility, hoping to make pass plays with no power? I have no love for the guy, but that doesn’t mean I wanna see BJ Raji using his pants to wipe overly-sweet blood off his helmet.

My point was more

It didnt stop Phillip Rivers playing and his knee injury was worse. I know that power comes mainly from legs on a deep pass play. I’m just not convinced he tried his best to get back out there on the field

We all know

the two situations were different, Rivers having a brace and more practice time with his knee. He also knew about the injury and accepted playing with it ahead of time, it didn’t just happen and he had to make a decision.

Worse...

Is a relative term… What was Rivers injury? Don’t know, but which ligament did he injure? Some make it harder to throw w/ than others… SOme you can wear a brace for, others a brace doesn’t help!

He tore his ACL I believe. But, from my understanding, Rivers tore it in a game, and then sat the rest of that game out. He played in the game the next week (which I think was the AFC Championship). If I’m correct about the circumstances, there obviously very different. Rivers was probably all hopped up on all sorts of pain killers and things. Cutler didn’t really have that opportunity.

ACL

See that is an easier injury for a QB to play with… An ACL you put a brace on it and it prevents the movement that the ACL does. However and MCL is harder cuz of having to plant and shuffle your feet. Any type of sideways movement of a leg can cause the MCL to buckle and give way. So, IMO, the ACL is easier to play with given a knee brace, but those braces aren’t as effective for MCL injuries… Thats just my take from my knowledge if the injuries which is pretty good. No Dr. tho…

He doesn’t care what people think and they don’t care about defending him. When you treat people like that and act like you don’t give a hoot…that is what you get back.

Question for Steelers fans:

What’s the State of the Offensive Line? Run-blocking, pass-blocking, and injury-wise? I hear that Pouncey will play, but who are your tackles? Do they communicate well? Because Capers likes to mix it up and send a corner here and there.

Also, if you’ve watched a lot of Packers games this year you’ve probably noticed that Charles Woodson has taken on a Troy Polamalu-like role on the Packers D. Woodson also plays the run well, forces many fumbles, and is pass defense is still pretty good. How well do your ILBs and Ryan Clark cover the pass?

53 Bears, 1 Cup

by I voted for Kodos on Jan 26, 2011 1:01 AM CST reply actions

Our tackles are currently Jonathan Scott on the Left, and ex Dallas Cowboy Flozell Adams on the right.

Jonathan Scott is up and down. Some times he is downright terrible against the pass, but against the Jets he held his own pretty well. He gets help in the run blocking game from Kemoeatu.

Flozell is average against the pass, but a good run blocker. Most of our success comes from his side. We are an inside running team though, so we rely on Pouncey and Kemo as guards.

Timmons is great in coverage most of the time with terrific closing speed. However, Troy will likely roam, and Clark will handle the over the top coverage most of the time. William Gay is a good nickel back as we have had in recent times and he will be on the field a lot against 3 WR sets.

Our coverage has improved considerably from last years awful squad, and as for our return game, Antonio Brown provides quite a lot of spark on kickoff returns, but we prefer to use the low risk – low reward qualities of Randle El on punts.

I remember either the commentators or in the post game someone saying it was the 7th straight playoff game were a team that ran a punt or kickoff back for touchdown lost the game. So yeah, I agree that it is not as important as many think.

The 2010 Chargers would probably disagree

And the 2000 Ravens would have pitched a Super Bowl shutout if they hadn’t given up a kick return.

Also, the teams that are winning will be kicking off more often, so the number of kicks returned for TD will skew a bit in favor of the loser. And teams that are far ahead are more likely to just punt the hell out of it, rather than play for coverage and give the other team a short field.

It’s not the end-all, be-all, but special teams is very important. This question will probably come as close as I can get to “proving” my argument: Does anyone here think the Bears would have won the North division without their stellar special teams play?

53 Bears, 1 Cup

by I voted for Kodos on Jan 28, 2011 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

I think the field position aspect of it is more important

than returning a kick or punt for a TD. The Bears had the best starting field position in the league so I definitely agree that their special teams was a large part of why they won the NFC North especially considering their offense was not very good. In the last two games against the bears field Position played a big part in the Packers winning. Containing Hester and have quite a few punts be downed inside the 10 yard line was crucial to the wins. So, for the most part I can understand and agree with what your saying. I just think controlling the field position is more important on special teams in the playoffs than breaking a play for a touchdown (not that it couldn’t help though).

by JDub37 on Jan 28, 2011 7:37 PM CST up reply actions

^This^

I don’t recall saying anywhere that a kick had to be returned for a TD to be significant.

I guess I’ll use this post to emphasize that special teams is very important and can really help or hurt a team, but that most of the time it factors into field position, not directly to points. Is that better?

NO Saints special teams

weren’t really bad. They had a terrible average per punt return, but coming off a season with 3 TDs on punt returns I’d say it’s safe to say they got some good field position out of teams kicking high and short or out of bounds. Courtney Roby averaged 27.5 per kick return. That adds up to pretty good field position. It doesn’t have to be a TD to count, you know.

Oh, you'll get to Ben

He was dropped for a sack 32 times during the twelve games he played (the two sacks that the Browns racked up during our last game were against Byron Leftwich, our second stringer) and I have no doubt that your D will drag him down to the ground a few times. The only time he managed to avoid a sack was during his first game back, against the Browns in week 5; I have no illusions that will happen with you guys.

The Ravens sacked him 6 times in the Divisional playoff game and a less talented escape artist would have gone down a few more times. We still won. So even if you catch him a few times that in itself will not be enough. If your blitzers can’t wrestle him down and he starts rolling to the right… he’ll burn you big time. I never cease to be amazed by how such a big fellow can be so slippery in the backfield.

He’s no Michael Vick, but you’d be surprised how many 1st downs he has picked up when he has to flee for his life or just bolts after pump faking a few times.

I can’t say that I’ve seen many Packers games, so please excuse my ignorance, but how mobile is AR? I always heard that he takes a lot of sacks. Ben is mobile but he takes a lot of sacks by refusing to throw the ball away like Brady or Peyton would do, so its not always the fault of our O line. What’s the story for you guys?

by Chileburger on Jan 26, 2011 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

The stats kinda give some creedence to this...

In the regular season, Big Ben was sacked 43 times while getting hit 78. In the post season, 8 sacks with 9 hits. I think the case is that you can get to Big Ben, but what you do after that is still a mystery. I think this is a good instance where hopefully our bigger interior guys can bring him down with him taking heat from the OLB’s.

As for Rodgers, he will run when pressured. He does take sacks (38 this year, last year was bad), but I think he has learned that you can throw the ball away with this team and still have a chance to make a play on the next one. Last year, he seemed to want to hold the ball until the last second to make a play downfield.

Actually, Ben was sacked 32 times

We played 4 QBs during the regular season (four!) Remember that Ben was out due to suspension from Games 1 to 4, and then he sat out of the last third of the plays against the Browns in Game 16. In total our QBs were sacked 43 times, but Ben himself went down 32 times.

But I appreciate your response on Rodgers.

by Chileburger on Jan 26, 2011 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

BushLAS did not do AR complete justice

He is the second best running QB in the league behind Michael Vick. He actually had the third most yards, but he was barely edged by Josh Freeman who played 1.5 more games than Rodgers. He is very slippery both in and out of the pocket. His sack total (31 for the regular season) is pretty average, much better than last year when he often got caught holding the ball too long. He hardly ever fumbles, only 4 fumbles this year and lost only 1 of them.

Add his running game on top of the third best QB rating and sixth best completion percentage, and I think the Steelers will have their hands full with the Green Bay Offense.

I didn't know that about Rodgers

Well, it certainly sounds as if we both have QBs who are challenging to pull down, but also tend to take sacks due to a desire to extend the play. Looks like we’ve got something in common, then.

Thanks for the info.

How does the empty set (4 or 5 WRs) work out for you guys? It gives several of my BTSC brethen fits when they see Ben standing alone back there, but I broke down the numbers on Ben’s performance out of the empties this year and it’s actually been pretty succesful for us.

They normally seem to work out pretty well for us. It often scares me to see him in 5 WR sets because of the same reason you mentioned above, but when you have a guy who is as good at reading defenses and going through progressions as Rodgers is, it can be a big advantage to come out in those sets.

amazed by how such a big fellow can be so slippery

See I don’t see Ben as being slippery at all. He doesn’t get away from sacks by being slippery, he gets away from sacks by being the strongest QB in the NFL. One guy can get his hands on Ben, but they don’t usually bring him down by themselves. Ben is a QB that uses his size and strength to break tackles/sacks and extend plays! Rodgers is more the slippery QB who avoids sacks and hits altogther! Ben is a big strong kid that doesn’t go down easily, but he does get hit alot and still breaks the tackle to extend the play!!

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Jan 26, 2011 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

Strong and slippery, then!

Well, you are right, of course, that he avoids a lot of sacks through sheer strength. For my money, the most spectacular was against the Ravens in Game 12 when he fought off Suggs and managed to throw the ball away, avoiding the sack. That was a result of his strength, most definately.

But he is also slippery. Several times during the year we’ve seen him surrounded by 2 or even 3 defenders and we moan “he’s toast,” but someone he manages to slip away underneath their arms.

Either way, it’s pretty amazing. We always say at BTSC that a QB like Brady or Peyton would get killed behind our line. Ben still manages to thrive.

by Chileburger on Jan 26, 2011 6:28 PM CST up reply actions

He’s very mobile. In my opinion, he’s probably the second best scrambling Qb in the league to Vick. He did take quite a few sacks last season but the majority of his sacks resulted in just poor offensive line play. It’s obvious to me that this year his pocket presence is much better also. The way he’s able to maneuver around the pocket some plays is nothing short of amazing. Though, it’ll be interesting to see if he’s able to run away from or put a move on either of your OLB’s as opposed to the 4-3 DE’s.

Mr. Harrison and Mr. Woodley

I suspect that you guys are just as proud of your LB corps as we are, and I don’t want to come off as a blind homer or anything, but those OLBs would be Mr. James Harrison and Mr. LaMarr Woodley and they are nothing short of spectacular. Add to them Mr. Farrior and Mr. Timmons and that gives us the best foursome in the league in my opinion.

I expect that they will make Rodgers put the impressive scrambling talents that you mention to the test.

I saw in another post on your site that your contributor feels that your DL is better than ours, and appears to cite sack totals as part of his support for that opinion. I’m not an expert on your line so I can’t call it one way or another, but in our scheme the DLmen aren’t SUPPOSED to be getting sacks… its not “their job” so to speak. The fact that they have been getting them lately is actually something that should worry your OC.

Well, its all wordplay from me anyway. But there is one thing that I am completely, totally, absolutely sure of…

The Packers don’t have anyone who can match up whisker-by-whisker to Brett Keisel’s beard. Fear the Beard! It’s even got its own Facebook page, which is hilarious.

DL and LB

It’s no secret that the Steelers have the best LB’s in the NFL. They are all good, especially the combo of Woodley and Harrison.

As for DL, yeah, I’ll definately take ours because they can do either: occupy blockers or rush the passer. The thing is, they do both. They are asked to occupy blockers, take on double teams (Raji and Jenkins), yet they still reach the QB. The DL really gets the job done for us, and it’s a big reason why we are so successfull in generating sacks and pressure.

PS- You may have Keisel’s beard, but we have Clay’s hair! Its been told that Clay’s hair works as if he has 2 extra hands. 4 hands are better than 2….. ; )

Hampton takes on 2 blockers, sometimes 3. Hood is commanding double teams as well. And same with Keisel.

That's awfully generous

We’ve got a great d-line, but our linebackers as a whole don’t hold a candle to the Steelers. Obviously CM3 is great, and Bishop makes plays, but Hawk is a C+ and our other OLB spot has been filled by a series of capable backups.

And I wouldn’t say that any 3-4 scheme has a DL that isn’t supposed to get sacks. It’s not their primary job, but I doubt LeBeau or Capers get upset when one of them gets to the QB while occupying blockers and playing the run.

I never got why Packer fans are so down on Hawk. Well, actually, I do, they are factoring in his draft position/salary. He is very solid.

The other OLB spot may not be ideal, but with Zombo on running downs & Walden on passing downs, I feel pretty good about it, especially considering they are, what, 5 & 6 on the depth chart?

C+ or C++

I think these are computer programming languages, but in this case it’s also Hawk’s grade.

I think Hawk is solid, assignment sure (except for the 1,000 times he gets beaten to the edge and overestimates his speed), and dependable. But he’s not very good in coverage – though he’s been better this year, he’s still not good at it, and how much of his improvement can be attributed to the improved pass rush? He does not shed blocks very well, either. If I had to rate Hawk based on draft spot, I’d say C- at best. Not a total bust, but definitely not a playmaker, like Raji, who we got a few picks later in last year’s draft. As stated by Josh Roberts, compare Hawk to Timmons or Farrior and it’s not close.

Well, they're like a running play essentially...

And our OC prefers the pass whenever possible, so this is a way to kind of run, and not run.

That and we have a solid open field blocker in Heath Miller, and possibly the best run blocking WR in the game in Hines Ward, so it’s a way to let them do what they do well, besides catch passes of course. The other receivers on the roster are all quick, elusive, speedsters, so it really plays into the strengths of the whole crew.

Well, I think I can safely say we're all fairly confident in this group as a whole...

But that would be a cop out, so I’ll say kick/ punt coverage, although we’re much better in that area than we were last year. Also, offensive line, especially now with Pouncey looking less and less likely to play. We have a backup starting at LT, a backup at C, a midseason fill in at RG (who was also an undrafted free agent last year), and a preseason free agent signing at RT (although Flozell has far and away exceeded my fairly low expectations for him).

We have a few guys who return kicks and punts. Randle El is our veteran return man. He does quite a bit of fair catching, and in my opinion is very unlikely to actually return anything to the house. Rookie Antonio Brown is electric. He finds seams in coverage units, and while he isn’t necessarily a player who will kill you all the time, he’s a threat to break one at any time, and seems to get a good average on his returns. You could also see Emmanual Sanders or Mewelde Moore returning kicks, the chances are slim to none, but they are options. Our best return man as of now is Antonio Brown.

Kaponos has played really well for us. He hasn’t had any major screw ups, and has done a good job for the most part, unless I missed something. How bad was he for you guys?

Kaponos has played really well for us. He hasn’t had any major screw ups, and has done a good job for the most part, unless I missed something. How bad was he for you guys?

I thought he was just below average. I didn’t think he had a big leg, shanked a few, and just never really kicked directionally. He probably has learned since then, but he was just average…

Yeah, he's not blowing anyone away...

But at the same time he hasn’t created a noticable drop off either. He’s servicable, which is more than we could say for Mitch Berger two seasons ago.

Hey, any of you fans from the Madison area?

Spent a little time there back in the day. Nice place, quiet and peaceful. Overall, I enjoyed my time in Wisconsin, short as it was.

He seems to have caught on in Buffalo...

Backup center, rotational guard. Never got a chance to play, and didn’t prove enough to warrant a roster spot in a thin group of linemen this year. Personally, I though we could have used him, but I’m not seeing him practice everyday, you know?

I went to Madison when I was probably 17 or 18 on a 4H trip (farm kid, got any of those in WI, hahaha?). But that was about 8 years ago now (wow, time flies).

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

Grew up in Madison, went to UW-Madison

Only left because I needed to try something new after 20+ years there. Nice campus and lots and lots of pretty girls (but also an annoying frat/sorority scene). People tend to be pretty nice in Madison. Schools are pretty good, so if I ever have kids (knock on wood) I’d probably return. And did I mention lots of pretty girls?

Grew up an hour and a half away from Madison down I-94/90.

I’ve traveled there for hockey tournaments, Badger football and hockey games, shopping w/ Mom, a day trip just to get out away from home with my parents…yeah. Madison’s a good time.

Now, I have nothing against the man or his play

But after reading it so often this week, the name “Pouncey” just sounds weird to me, y’know? It’s like it’s not even a person’s name anymore. To me, it’s the name a $7/hour ventriloquist gives to his least favorite dummy. “Pouncey” – yeah, and it used to be his favorite, too, right after he got it. It was gonna be a big hit at the next birthday party. It was gonna be “Mr. Pouncey” and he would come in to save the day. So right when his main dummy, Mr. Jingles, started mouthing off too badly, he reached behind his seat and said:

“Look kids! It’s Mr. Pouncey!”
“Eh-heh…ehheh…WAAAAAAAH!
“What’s wrong? Don’t you like Mr. Pouncey?”
“He-he-he’s UGLY! WAAAAAAH!”
“…Well, that’s ok if you don’t like Mr. Pouncey, ‘cuz he’s mean and he treats all the other dummies badly. There’s a lesson here, kids – do you know what that is?”
“D-d-don’t be UGLY like Mr. Pouncey!”
“That’s right, Mr. Pouncey is ugly…he’s very, very ugly, and I don’t understand why I shelled out $300 for him now…”

So now when that poor entertainer looks in Pouncey’s box, all he sees is ugly, ugly, ugly. And kindling for the trash-can fire, since that bitch made him refund the deposit for the party, and that meant he couldn’t make rent last month. Stupid Pouncey…

It could just be me, though.

Funny, though. Any chance we can get us a Pouncey in this year’s draft? I’d like one, please.

but Tramon Williams has played very well this year.

Nah, Rodgers only does that on rushing TDs

He won’t do that after his 6 TD passes, or after the defensive TD, or after the special teams TD (OK, now you know I’m joking)

What do Steelers fans think of Roethlisberger?

Obviously he’s a great QB, and money in the clutch, but does that outweigh his personal problems for Steelers fans? Does going 3-1 during his absence make it seem like he might not be worth it, or does it seem like he’s gotten his act together? Every time I watch him play I really want to like him, but I can’t overlook his past (alleged) transgressions. Obviously, if he was a Packer, I’d feel different, but my favorite Steeler is probably Hines Ward. He plays WR like a LB and I like that, plus he seems like a good community guy, which is always a plus for my ability to cheer for non-Packers.

Opinions are mixed. But it seems like far more fans support Ben and are either ready to give him another chance, or believe he is actually completely innocent. His play on the field obviously has a lot to do with the opinion of him.

And Hines is probably the favorite Steeler for most Steelers fans as well. For his play, his leadership, his personality, etc. Oh, and Polamalu also, who is probably even more humble and well-spoken/thoughtful.

From the outside looking in

I don’t live in the Pittsburgh area but I keep reading positive things about Ben trying to straighten his life out. In small ways as well as large. It is very possible that his problems and the tough love the Rooney family (with the help of the NFL) has shown him has finally made him sit up, look at how he was behaving and realize that wasn’t the man he wanted to be. I think most fans are pulling for him to become a better person. Word will get around fast enough if he isn’t.

Mike Wallce and Troy will take turns returning punts and Troy will line up at WR. Better get the coaching staff working on those wrinkles.

Judging from other posts

it seems that Steelers fans are not very happy with their backup DBs. If the Packers coaching staff feels the same way I’d expect to see lots of 3 and 4 WR sets.

My question: If the Packers go with 3 or 4 wide, what lineup do the Steelers counter with? Can we force you to go nickel and dime or do you stay in the base? Are there any situations in which Harrison or Woodley commonly go to the sideline?

Harrison and Woodley to the sideline is a massive no. We go for a 1 4 6 sometimes a 2 4 5 lineup.
