Jennings okay, Green out for year

According to coach mike McCarthy Greg Jennings hand is just bruised and he will be fine for San Diego.  However, Alex Green is out for the year with a knee injury which sucks.  I would like to have seen more of him as the year went on.  Guess maybe we will bring up Saine from the practice squad.  Or do you think we will oook at the running back scrap heap and try to pick someone up from there?

Move Saine up

Glad GJ is fine, Green is unfortunate, hopefully the rehab process is smooth and he’s ready for next season.

Is Royce Da 5'9" actually 5'9"? The world may never know.

Not sure TT looks for a RB here

He’ll probably think ST when he chooses who’ll replace Green. We got enough RB as it is with Starks, Grant, Kuhn and even Cobb if MM comes up with something more sophisticated than just motioning him to the backfield pre-snap (end-arounds, double end-arounds, etc.).

The lessons of last season

I torn about whether to call up Saine or brinigng in another RB. After all, we don’t want to get too thin at RB. Last year we learned that a running back presense is needed. Keeping an extra guy to cover in case Starks or Grant goes down too is going to be huge.

Also, it would be good to have another guy who is good at the screen game. Green was pretty good at that and learning to be our third down back. So getting a guy to cover that should be a priority.

At the same time we saw one running play called for Cobb, and he might be able to fit that requirement for the rest of the year and a special team player might be a better idea. Maybe Tori Gurley to block punts and give another big target red zone threat?

by PackApologist on Oct 24, 2011 5:04 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Agreed.

I think it would be smart for TT to do what’s best for our Special Teams. Gurley is intriguing, but even another LB/TE type for kick coverage would be nice, I suppose.

Just goes to show you how something that APPEARED not to be much...

actually turns out to be really bad. Just like Collins (get better bro!) and his neck. Wish the best for Green. I think he looked good in the preseason and had made the most of his opportunities now.

That dog just won't hunt.

Um, Collins didn't move after he fell down...

what didn’t look serious about that? his neck snapped back and to the left…

by Nels Winkler on Oct 24, 2011 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

He was referring to the fact that the play in itself looked harmless, not what resulted from the play.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

as for RB's

You could easily place Cobb in the backfield on some plays. junk time you’re still gonna give grant/starks the ball for safety. Cobb can do some emergency RB’ing if one is injured. It will give all of our weapons more time on the field.

to bring up? special teams or defense.

I kinda like that idea. Maybe use him in some new creative ways.

Saine

I don’t see anyway that the Packers won’t replace Green with another RB, or FB and use Kuhn as the third RB. Maybe they’ll bring Hall back. But there’s no way they’ll go the rest of the year with only 3 RBs/FBs.

Saine is a RB with potential. His strengths are good hands (he could be a WR), he is intelligent and he has track speed. His weaknesses are that he doesn’t have much elusiveness and for a back with decent size, he’s not really a hard runner. He could potentially be a decent KR.

Given TT and MM’s history, I’d guess they’ll either bring back Hall, Johnson or Nance. Or if they like Saine’s development they’ll sign him off the practice squad.

by MikeDB on Oct 25, 2011 12:55 PM CDT reply actions

So your take on Saine is that if he hits his top potential, he can be another Brandon Jackson.

If that’s true, I’d be fine with it.

He's got a lot more speed than Jackson ...

but I have doubts if he would ever be a much more effective runner than him.Saine probably has better hands, too. He can catch anything near him. So other than the possibility of breaking a long run or catch once and a while, that might be a good comparison.

by MikeDB on Oct 25, 2011 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Uhmmm

I don’t think Jackson had any drops in his last 2 years w/ the Packers. I mean I could be wrong, but either way Jackson had exceptional hands. Saine will never be nearly as good a reciever as Jackson. ANd I don’t think he’ll ever be even a good RB. No elusiveness, no power and not a hard runner? WHat’s left to like about him? WHole lotta nothing!

Have you ever seen Saine play?

I’ve seen Saine make incredible one-hand catches from Tyrelle Pryor, who can’t throw an accurate pass. Saine has excellent hands, which means he can actually go out for a pass rather only catch dump offs and screens.

Whether he’ll ever be much of a runner, I don’t know any more than you! He over-relied on his speed in college and he had one good year and two average years because of it. Being that he is a smart kid, he may really take to good coaching and improve. I think at a minimum he’ll be the equal of Brandon Jackson in run and pass catching ability. I don’t know if he’ll ever be able to pass block like Jackson did. Time will tell.

by MikeDB on Oct 26, 2011 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

So maybe Saine can catch.

Sucks at the rest of being a RB. A RB either is a powerful and aggressive runner or he isn’t. If Saine isn’t by now, he ain’t suddenly going to become one. Jackson has excellent hands and has proven it on the NFL level, something Saine hasn’t…

How is he as a blocker?

I liked Jackson’s blocking ability

by Jeffersap on Oct 25, 2011 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

He never really had to pass block in college.

So it depends on how well he is learning now and how willing he is.

by MikeDB on Oct 26, 2011 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe we can bring in Larry Johnson or Terrell Owens

Just kidding. I do think both have something left to offer, but neither makes sense for this team.

I’d like to see what Saine could do. I also wouldn’t mind picking up another defensive guy.

What? NO Randy Moss mention??

Or a trade for Donovan Mcnabb

The talk on DN from the regulars there was that the vikes would part Mcnabb for a second rounder. Now that they don’t need him due to ponder, perhaps we can lure him for a third rounder!

by Glenn'sYank13 on Oct 26, 2011 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

But...

our third rounder would be pretty late… probably have to use a second then. Oh well, got to fill that roster spot somehow.

by Glenn'sYank13 on Oct 26, 2011 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I was going to suggest some garbage player to give up for McNabb,

but I can’t even think of someone bad enough to make it a fair trade. We could resign Ahmad Carroll and trade him. That might be fair…

Randy Moss would could work too!

Imagine having a true deep ball threat! But if we want another RB, we should look to Johnson, or maybe Clinton Portis or Shaun Alexander. It’s possible that Brian Westbrook or Tiki Barber could have something too. If I learned nothing from the 2010 VIkings, I learned this: prime football talent are worthy of roster spots no matter if their age has caught up with them!

by Jeffersap on Oct 26, 2011 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't rule out

Marcus Allen or Larry Csonka either

by Jeffersap on Oct 26, 2011 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Bart Starr

This Rodgers guy is a piece of crap.

Since you lose some speed with age, Csonka would be a good one. Maybe he could still knock some guys around at 60.

OJ Simpson still has some good runs left in him

He’s great at finding seams and getting through tough spots

Well the jury's still out....

on whether he can still knife through the bodies into the second level or not….
