There were some negative comments when the Green Bay Packers re-signed free agent K Mason Crosby last summer. Not that he's a bad player, but that he wasn't worth the money (5 years, $14.75 million). I was fine with the contract because it was the market rate for a veteran kicker. Also, all indications were that the Packers had every intention to re-sign him for months. and they haven't even brought in another kicker to compete against him since he won the starting job back in 2007.
But I certainly didn't expect he'd make every field goal he attempted, including a couple of monster kicks (58 yards and 56 yards in recent weeks). And I wasn't penciling him in to win the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award twice in the first seven weeks. Maybe he's a new and improved kicker, but I think it's more likely he's riding a good streak to start the season. I expect he'll miss a field goal attempt or two in the near future, so enjoy it while he's in the zone because it's not likely to last.
