Ask The Falcoholic!

I'm a little frightened of the Packers, so I'll keep this brief, lest Aaron Rodgers start pelting me with footballs.

With a big matchup between the Packers and Falcons in the Georgia Dome this Sunday night, the time seemed right to pop over and answer your Falcons-related questions. If you want to know why we're comparing the offensive line to a sieve, or why Julio Jones is a beastman from outer space, I got you covered.

If you could Recommend this so it stays near the top of the list, I would be ever so grateful. And if you could politely ask Mike McCarthy to rein in his blue-eyed killer when the Pack comes to Atlanta, I would be even more grateful.

Here's to a great game!

You guys gave up a draft and a half for Julio jones,

whats the general falcons fan feeling about that deal, as well as your personal feeling? I’m not really sure about your exact weaknesses and team needs, but after the last playoff game vs us I thought you guys would try to get some more young talent on defense. And for me I never want my team to give up alot of draft picks to get a rookie, unless he’s a possible franchise QB.

It's too early to say

If Julio Jones ends up being a once-in-a-generation receiver, it probably won’t seem like too much to give up for him. It was a lot, make no mistake, but the Falcons saw something in him.

It’s easy to see what it is that makes him special. He’s a huge athlete with terrific hands, and his route-running gets better by the week. He’s on pace to have the second most receptions ever for a rookie wide receiver, and he’s absolutely torched the Bucs and Seahawks in back-to-back weeks.

Was it too much? Probably. Do I really care at the moment, watching him wreak havoc? Nah.

Once a generation WR

How can he be a once a generation WR, when he wasn’t even the best WR in his draft class?! AJ Green was a better WR prospect than Julio, whats that make Green? A game changing WR the revolutionizes the game at the WR position? Julio is very talented player, but he’s not a generational player.

I would say your team needs were clearly on the defensive side of the ball. I understand wanting to get another weapon opposite White, but Baldwin would have been available at the end of the 1st if you wanted a WR, and you would still have a 1st rd pick next year to get another playmaking defensive player.

IMO, they over-reacted to the Packers blowing them out and tried to copy the Packers instead of sticking to their own plan. Except the Packers have the best WR corp in the NFL, but never used a 1st rd pick on a WR.

You can’t seriously say that AJ Green is better than Julio Jones after 4 games. Analysts thought they were both very good prospects, but I don’t think a lot thought one was clearly better than the other. Julio Jones IMO has a very good chance to be one of the Top 5 receivers in the NFL. Maybe not generational player, but he is a stud.

by tmoneyttime1 on Oct 4, 2011 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I said...

He was a better draft prospect, not that he was going to be a better player! Him thinking Julio might a generational player is probably MORE ridiculous! Green WAS a better draft prospect! I follow the draft very closely and Green was thought to be the much better prospect all along. Julio moved close after he ran alot faster than anyone expected. Some might call that a workout warrior… I think Julio has a bright future, but if given the choice Green would have been my pick. Jennings only ran a 4.5 40, but he’s still a deep threat! Green was compared to Jenning cuz he runs smooth crisp routes and has terrific hands.

Later… farther down. He is a great talent, no doubt! I think he might become an excellent player. But any mention of once a generation WR? That IS ridiculous! Not putting down Julio, to say Green was a higher rated prospect, it happens to be the truth! EVERY scouting report had AJ GReen rated noticably higher then Julio. When he ran a 4.3 40, it dramatically raised his stock, but still not higher than Green!

Yes

I would consider Tom Brady the best QB in his draft class…while I would not consider him the best QB prospect

by tmoneyttime1 on Oct 5, 2011 7:43 AM CDT up reply actions

There is a difference

The best WR in a draft class means that that individual was the best WR, and will be the best WR out of the entire class when it is all said and done. The best WR prospect just means who was the better prospect / player at that time based off of certain measuring values. Just because a player gets drafted before someone, doesn’t make them a better prospect either. A player could get drafted lower based off of injury or behavior concerns.

Was Alex Smith the best QB in his draft class? No. Was he the the best QB prospect out of that class? The majority of teams in the 05 draft obviously thought so.

Julio won't be Jerry Rice or TO

He won’t even be Fitz or Megatron. But I think he’ll be on par with a guy like Andre Rison, Antonio Freeman or Steve Smith.

We have a great receiving corps, but I’m not gonna lie, it’d be awesome to have a guy like Fitz or one of the Johnsons. Roddy White and Julio Jones will probably be the best overall receiving corp in the NFL within a couple years, if they can properly replace Gonzalez. Both White and Julio are both dynamic athletes and can make Atlanta a very high octane offense. White is already a top 10 receiver, IMO, and Julio will soon join him. I like our future better than Atlanta’s, mainly cause we have superstars on both sides of the ball, but Altanta’s offense looking to the future scares me.

it’d be awesome to have a guy like Fitz or one of the Johnsons.

His name is Finley and his official position is TE, not that it matters! Many different ways to build a roster and a playmaking TE is every bit as valuable as a playmaking WR. Either way they are both playmakers…

I didn't say he would be one

I said IF he were to end up as one, I don’t think anyone’s going to mind giving up that haul of draft picks. I would agree that Green was considered the better prospect, and hey, he may very well have the better career.

I would have been happy to get a playmaker on defense and a receiver, but I would’ve been a little bit unhappy had it been Baldwin. Kid needs to screw his head on right.

Ultimately, the system matters as much as anything else. Julio Jones is a superb fit for the Falcons, being a better blocker than A.J. Green. They’ll both have amazing careers, but I’m happy to have Julio.

Scheme fit..

So to be a scheme fit your WR need to make plays and be able to block? Let me introduce you to Jordy Nelson! He makes plays, as I’m sure your aware, and is a very good blocking WR. And to make it better we got him in the 2nd round! All I’m sayin is WR are pretty easy to come by. You gave an extremely high price for a good “scheme fit”. LOL If you paid that price and got a franchise QB, it makes sense, but for a WR, even a very talented one, is pretty ridiculous. Julio basically has to become a consensus All Pro WR to be worth the price you paid to get him! A little patience was needed, but instead your team acted desperate to keep up. Packers have used 3 2nd rd picks to get 3 playmakes and 2 3rd round picks to get 2 more playmaking recievers (Jones and Finley). Playmaking WR can be had thru the majority of rounds in the top of the draft. You don’t have to pay an exorbitant price to find a WR that can make plays and be a good blocker!

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Oct 5, 2011 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't really disagree with that

At this point, what’s done is done. Most Falcons fans think it was probably too much to give up, but there’s nothing we can really do about it as fans at this point. We do love Julio Jones, and we’d like very much for him to be worth it.

I think he’s a special talent, either way, and I do think he has a ceiling as an All-Pro type. It’s just way too early to tell one way or the other. Given his considerable talent, I don’t think it’s any more ridiculous to say he could be an elite WR than to say he won’t be. We’re in a gestation period.

You guys have done extremely well to find the weapons you’ve found, and I’ve long thought Ted Thompson is criminally underrated. The Falcons chose to gamble big and hope that Jones can lift their offense to new heights. If it fails, the team will justifiably take hits for it.

Playmakers arnt easy to come by

Find me a WR with the same abilities and talent as Calvin Johnson who was drafted after the 1st round. Johnson wasn’t the play maker he is now in his first year in the league, give Julio some time before you dismiss him. Same thing with Roddy White, it took him time to adjust.

And about giving picks up for a player, what is the average career length of a player? Around 6 years. With those draft picks given up, they may have drafted some great people, or they may have drafted nobody. Either way, if Jones has a good career for 12 or so years, I’d say it was worth the price paid.

by Shoes31 on Oct 5, 2011 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Different skill set, but

Jenning is a playmaker. Playmakers come in all shapes and sizes. If you chose to include TE’s Finley has a skill set not unlike Calvin Johnson. Both are big, physical and can go up over the defense to make a play. Johnson is only faster. That speed alone doesn’t mean he’s a better playmaker. Just different.

I think Rodgers will eviscerate the defense

How can he not? The only thing the Falcons can do is play aggressively, try to force some turnovers and get through the line to him. If they give him time and don’t punish him for the occasional errant throw, it’s all in the offense’s hands.

Optimistic, right?

Talk about your nickle and dime defenses...

we like going four and five wide (as you can remember from last year). Any improvement from last year to this? (I know your nickle back was out for that playoff game)

Also, this time around we also have another weapon, namely Finley. How does your defense cover athletic TEs like Finley?

by PackFaninFL on Oct 3, 2011 3:11 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

They've definitely improved

Kelvin Hayden is a stabilizing force at nickel, and when he’s played he’s doing pretty well. Chris Owens is a much, much better fourth option than he is a nickel guy, though your weapons are pretty impressive all the way around. If the Falcons need to match up purely on athleticism, Dominique Franks is an option. It’s not enough to stop Rodgers, but it’s better than it was.

And yes, I know they imploded against the Seahawks. I blame that one on a complete lack of a pass rush.

Finley’s scary. The Falcons will cover him with their linebackers, which is a mismatch. Curtis Lofton has gotten noticeably better in coverage, however, and should at least challenge Finley a bit. Falcons may also cheat a safety up.

But the road versus home split isn’t as important as the team’s guiding philosophy. They’re absurdly conservative once they have a lead. If the Falcons were in a horror movie, they’d shoot the bad guy once and think that was the end of it.

Then they’d get their heads bashed in with an axe.

He's not

But you pretty much nailed a problem we have with the team. They got up by 20 against the Seahawks and just sat there, flat-footed and glass-jawed, while Seattle caught up. Once they have a decent lead, they go run, short pass and soft zone defense all day long.

I may be getting a little ranty here. I just hope the Falcons don’t take any hypothetical leads for granted against you guys.

Has this just been a problem this year, or just more apparent?

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

That came out all stupid-like, but oh well.

It's been a problem for going on four years now

But it’s most apparent when you’re losing close games, or choking away massive leads to clearly inferior teams.

That’s happened a lot this year.

All right...

Tell me about Sean Weatherspoon. How’s he doing?

How did Mike Smith rally the troops after that disheartening, horrific loss to Chicago in Wee k1?

He flies all over the field

Still prone to the occasional mental mistake, but you can’t get away from him. As fast and athletic a linebacker as there is in the NFL.

I assume a lot of cussing was involved in the rallying.

Reading between the lines

I think he’s playing with pain. He talks about not using injuries as an excuse and that he has to get better, which tells me he’s still banged up.

Sounds to me like a case where
talking about not using injuries as an excuse

is really using injuries as an excuse, while simultaneously denying it.

Normally I'd agree

But Roddy has never made an excuse, regularly played in pain and despite his quirky Tweeting, always put the team first. I’m willing to give him a pass here.

How have your DE's been?

Has Abraham been getting consistent pressure? And what about Ray Edwards, is he living up to expectations? Are they getting washed out, or are they stout against the run?

by Shoes31 on Oct 6, 2011 10:26 AM CDT reply actions

So-so.

Abraham has been doing pretty well, as he’s gotten 2 sacks and a forced fumble so far this year.

Edwards hasn’t registered a sack yet. He did, however, make a huge play against the Eagles (a 70-something yard fumble return that was a very pivotal play). Edwards also tipped a screen pass vs. the Seachickens, which nearly resulted in a pick 6 interception that would’ve iced the game.

Overall, though, our line hasn’t gotten enough pressure consistently. The interior d-line has been banged up so far, but appears to be close to 100% healthy going into week 5. So, I anticipate an improvement in pressure over the next few games.

You also asked about the run D. We’re ranked 10th in the league vs the run (in terms of yardage given up on the ground). Not bad, but I’m hopeful this will also improve as our D-line gets back to full strength.

Is Turner taking the red zone hanfoffs?

I am wondering if it’s him or someone else. Also, do you feel that if the offense gets the big plays he can power it in? I have a feeling that this could be the week it really hurts the Packers and could result in a very close game or even a loss if they can’t contain the big plays.

There is nothing wrong with me cheering for players that are former players for my teams. Unless they become a Viking.

Eric Weems really killed us...

in both games last year. How have the kickoff rule changes effected his return game? Have the rules neutralized him in any way?

And talk about your special teams in general if you want. I haven’t seen too much discussion on that underrated phase of the game.

by PackFaninFL on Oct 7, 2011 2:09 PM CDT reply actions

Well

Our punter is 32nd in the league. It’s better than before, when he was 33rd behind a backup, but he’s still awful. Averaging just over 30 yards a punt. He’s a complete waste of a draft pick.

Weems has gotten into an awful habit of letting the ball roll inside the ten without picking it up, hence, we’ve started inside the ten several times this year already.

Thankfully, our coverage is alright. That’s the only bright spot.

by Jebidillah on Oct 7, 2011 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh

And Bryant, our kicker, is automatic. You’d better hope the win doesn’t come down to a FG of 55 yards or less, because I have every reason to believe he’ll nail it.

Hell, he hit a 62 yard game winner in his career already.

What was your guys inital feeling when you chose Matt Ryan?

As for me, I’m often skeptical of all our 1st round picks for no given reason. Did you think he was going to be the franchise for you guys, or was there any question as to if he was overhyped and wasn’t that good? I thought he would certainly be really good (remember, I said I’m randomly and mysteriously skeptical of OUR first round picks, not the first round picks of other teams).

I was not happy

I’ll happily admit I was wicked wrong about it, but I wasn’t a big believer in Ryan when he was drafted, having seen him play at BC.

I did think he was overhyped, I’ll admit.

I could see why

why you would think he was overhyped. His college stats , including is 59% compl and 19 INTs aren’t all that impressive. I don’t really remember why I liked him as a prospect, maybe just because he had the size and arm, he was even pretty accurate he just needed to cut down on the INTs. And also I remmeber he had a poor supporting cast and he seemed to make his teammates betetr.

And while we’re on the topic of admitting things…I wasn’t too happy about the pick of BJ Raji. It wasn’t like I thought he would wash out like Justn Harrell did…I just really wanted Brian Orakpo (whos pretty beast right now) and I didn’t think Raji would do much besides take up space in the middle, which Pickett already did well.

And honestly, I wasn’t really on board with trading a 2nd-rounder and 2 3rd-rounders to trade up for Clay Matthews. Again, I was just skeptical because I didn’t know anything about him adn we gave up 3 picks for him.

Great game guys.

Early on I thought it would be a shootout, when you guys drove down and scored right away. And when it was 14-0, and Clifton went down, I was a bit nervous. But the Pack turned it around and got some momentum…and when weve got momentum we’re tough to beat.

Anyways, I think Matt Ryan, Mike Smith, and the boys will get it turned around. You guys were really competetive tonite and have alot of talent, I hope we don’t have to meet again in the playoffs. Not that I think we would lose, but I would rather play the winner of the NFC West three times all the way to the SB.

When we have home-field,

we’ll only need to play 2 games before the Super Bowl.

Badgers? Getting it done.
Packers? Already got it done.
Brewers? Getting it done in a big way.
Blackhawks? About to get it done again.

Sports are fun lately.
