Packers Offensive Season Review: First Quarter

Just some of my quick thoughts on each area of the Packers Offense. Feel free to give your own opinions at the bottom.

Star-divide

Offense

Quarterback: A+

Aaron Rodgers is on a historical pace right now. Twelve touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, fourteen hundred passing yards, a Championship Belt... I'm not sure what this man doesn't have right now. Proving to be the best quarterback in the league so far, aside from Brady and Brees.

Running Backs: B

Ryan Grant has been solid. James Starks has been solid. Both have had their shining moments, Grant in Week 3, and Starks in Weeks 1, 2, and 4. Starks has really picked up the pace, with an awful week 3 being his only setback. Two good running options in our passing offense. John Kuhn has been solid in protection, and good as a short yardage back. Oh and by the way, John Kuhn hurdles people.

Tight Ends: B

Jermichael Finley has really had a great start. His three touchdown game against Chicago was one of the more satisfying moments of my life. His blocking has really improved as well, even with a sub-par performance last week against Denver. Quarless has looked very good blocking this year. Haven't seen much of the other TE's, but I remember DJ Williams dropping a pass, and Ryan Taylor making a ST tackle against Carolina. Not a fan of Crabtree, his blocking has really regressed this year.

Wide Receivers: A-

Greg Jennings is awesome. Donald Driver is awesome. Jordy Nelson is awesome. Randall Cobb is fast and awesome. James Jones is not awesome. James Jones is responsible for ONE of Aaron Rodgers interceptions this year. James Jones, you are not awesome.

Offensive Line: B

Lets start with the bad: Newhouse and Clifton have both played awful. But as Jabooty pointed out, it was Newhouse's first start: Give him some slack. Still, two sacks, six pressures, and a hit is unacceptable for any starting offensive lineman in the NFL. Clifton has struggled for the majority of the year, but is playing at an acceptable rate for a 35 year old lineman. Bulaga has had a good year, hopefully he will be back soon. The improvement for starting tackles from year one to year two is often huge, and Bulaga is proving he has taken that step so far. He just needs to get healthy now. C

The interior of our line, however, is the best in all of football right now. TJ Lang, Scott Wells, and Josh Sitton have not given up ONE sack the entire year. That's outstanding, considering how many of us though left guard would be a weak link of the Packers offensive line.  A+

I am surprised at Lang's play,

in the preseason he got alot of penatlties, didn’t block all that well, and also lost his job to a roookie tackle who was playing guard for his first time in his life. Lang has done a good job in both run and pass blocking, and I havent’ seen a whole lot of false starts (but I’ve only see 2 of the games because I live in florida).

I don't think Lang has had a weak game yet!

I agree that he has been a pleasant surprise considering his offseason. The people I am worried about most, oddly enough, are Cliffy (thats the odd one, since he’s been so great) and now Newhouse just cause he’s….well, New.

Props to Lang!

I was among those who thought he would struggle a little as a 1st year starter. He’s had too many false starts, but other than that he has proven to be a big upgrade in run blocking and a good upgrade over Colledge in pass blocking too. He also gives the Packers a very physical set of OG’s that help set the tone in the run game. Can’t say enough about the way Lang has performed! Props to him!!

Sitton

I read somewhere that the Packers are averaging around 10 yard per carry when running over RG. Unless this was a typo – give the man an A+.

I’d have to give our RBs a B+. They don’t get many opportunities, so their yardage is not like the top backs in the league, but they are averaging more than 4.5 ypc. And Starks is doing well as a safety valve, when Rodgers gets pressure – though it would be nice if he’d break one of those for more than 3-7 yards.

by MikeDB on Oct 6, 2011 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

I wasn't going player by player

But I agree on Sitton. It graded more like: Interior Oline: A+ and Offensive Tackles: D-

I love Donald Driver. AND RANDALL COBB!

by arodgb on Oct 6, 2011 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

D-?

D- for the tackles seems a little crazy. Bulaga and Clifton deserve around a C i would think.

by jjoyen on Oct 6, 2011 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

Its in the D’s. Your right, but I graded on Newhouse, not Bulaga. Its the current grades, not week 2 grades. Bulaga would garner an B, with his start.

I love Donald Driver. AND RANDALL COBB!
Jay Cutler, the first quarterback to beat a playoff team with a losing record.

by arodgb on Oct 6, 2011 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

D- is kind of shortsighted

You’re making a Quarterly review, so all 4 weeks should be included. You have 2 weeks of Bulaga playing outstanding at RT. Then you have 2 weeks of Newhouse playing, 1 in which he played outstanding, the other in which he struggled. Bulaga practically doesn’t count for the Chicago game as he was injured early. Clifton struggled mightily against Carolina and Denver, so he has 2 good games on the year.

Interior- A+
OT- C

One game at a time...

by Jabooty on Oct 6, 2011 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Nit picking

I would give the OT’s a B. Bulaga has been solid to great and Clifton has been generally acceptable, but struggling a bit against some of the better pass rushers. Really neither of those two things are that surprising. After all, everyone knows that his is probably Clifton’s last year, all he has to do is just hang on. Bulaga coming around isn’t new since he has still improving just he like last year at this time. Finally as you said, Newhouse is showing that he’s more than capable as a back up, and maybe even starting material somewhere down the line.

A good solid B puts the tackles in generally a positive spin reflecting the good mojo but also shows how they need to do some more work yet.

by PackApologist on Oct 6, 2011 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Fine

I wouldn’t say Newhouse played outstanding against the Bears, though. He played well, but he had those two false starts and a gave up a sack. Clifton had just about his best game of the year against Denver, at least much better than against Chicago and Carolina. He’s playing fine. Your probably right, C is a much better assessment of the offensive tackles.

I love Donald Driver. AND RANDALL COBB!

Clifton had just about his best game of the year against Denver, at least much better than against Chicago and Carolina.

That made me cringe. Elvis Dumervil was having his way with Clifton last weekend. I’m not sure what his best game was, but at least Clifton has never turned into a turnstile. While he didn’t allow any sacks, he was letting Dumervil apply pressure. That shouldn’t be too surprising though given Clifton’s age. Plus he’s better than anyone we have on the roster to protect Rodgers’ blindside. At least that’s what I’m assuming…

I would give the TE's an A-

Mainly because of Finley. Dude’s a beast and he demands that opposing defenses prepare for him. His play opens up our WR’s.

I would like to see Crabtree released.

B because Finley can’t shut up. And our TE’s aren’t exactly doing a great job of helping out our tackles in blocking. Ill make it a B+

I don't think you should be factoring in Finley's off the field stuff

And I agree with blocking, however (maybe i’m blind) I don’t really see us using TE’s to help pass block.

Well

When Crabtree is in, that’s usually his job. And he’s been terrible at it. He’s allowed two sacks this year, AS a tight end blocking. And seeing Finley complain about not getting the ball enough after a 49-whatever blowout made me a little sick.

by arodgb on Oct 6, 2011 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree and Disagree

I agree 100% that Crabtree should be released. He hasn’t performed to expectations, and that is to be a reliable blocker. The release should wait until after the season though. I’m willing to give him time to improve his game. Finley should shut up, no doubt about that. However, it’s not affecting the chemistry in the locker room and it has not affected out performance on the field. Therefore, I wouldn’t factor that in the score. I think a B is a fair grade for the TE’s though. I don’t recall the TE’s being a major factor against New Orleans or Carolina. Finley had a huge game against Chicago, then he kept Denver distracted and preoccupied.

Jones hasn't been that bad

I’m not sure where you are going with saying James Jones was at fault for both of Rodgers’ interceptions this year. Now you could say one since the interception for the Bronco game was intended for him. The pass was a little high, but Jones should catch it. Really those things happen.

The first interception though had NOTHING to with James Jones at all. First of all the pass was intended for Jermichael Finely. Second the play was made by Urlacher who just made a phenominal play. Urlacher fooled Rodgers and hid in his coverage and then made a great play on the ball (one that very few MLB’s in this league make).

Now Jones hasn’t been an all pro, but he’s been good for what little the Packers have asked him to do so far.

by PackApologist on Oct 6, 2011 4:25 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah thats right...

what the hell did Jones have to do with the Urlacher INT?

When I read the article I didn’t really remember what ARod’s first INT was.

In Every Climb and Place....

by PhoenicianPakFan on Oct 6, 2011 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

The 2 interceptions

1. Urlacher’s interception was a great play by Urlacher and a poor decision by Rodgers.

2. Wasn’t the 2nd interception (against Denver) a tipped pass at the line, then it landed in the defender’s hands? If so, that’s on Rodgers again.

One game at a time...

by Jabooty on Oct 6, 2011 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Naw the second was tipped by Jones...

that one could be blamed on him. Rodgers even looked like he gave Jones the “glare” on that one. But yeah, the first had nothing to do with Jones at all.

Rodgers said he threw it too high.

I would say both INT’s are on Rodgers. But I can live w/ a QB who throws and INT every other game for the years. 8 Ints is a great year.

Whoops

I think I was thinking of the 2010 game against Detroit, in which Jennings dropped the touchdown and it went for an interception… No clue how that related to Jones and the interception, but its fixed now. Sorry about that. Jones still isn’t awesome.

My other bone to pick

I’m willing to cut Marshall Newhouse a bit more slack than you it sounds like. So far we’ve seen a game and a half from him. When he stepped in for Bulaga against Chicago he held his own. He did so against a very good Bears D-line and even held his own the handful of times he went against Julius Peppers. Peppers has been reverting to playing when he wants to play mentality, but it is going to be tough to find a better D-lineman in this league.

After doing a good enough job against the Bears he got his first start against another great pass rusher in Von Miller. Miller is a rookie, but he’s tied for fifth in the league for sacks and leads rookies in sacks as well. Basically, Miller isn’t your average rookie and looks to have a promising career in front of him. Newhouse struggled against him, but generally did okay.

Overall, I would give Newhouse a positive grade as a result of the moderate expectations for him as a backup having to step up and the stiff competition he’s faced.

by PackApologist on Oct 6, 2011 4:42 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I don’t have a problem with Newhouse either. And if I’m not mistaken, it seems like he’s taken most of his reps at LT. So, the fact that he’s looked solid at RT is really impressive to me. Really, I think he could develop into a solid starter if he kept getting the experience.

I don’t think it’s anything to be ashamed of to let Miller work you over. Yeah, it’s not great but like you said, he’s not your average rookie. My guess is he’s going to be considered amongst the elite pass rushers here soon. I seriously don’t know if I’ve seen anyone with a quicker first step off the line. His speed is crazy.

by packallday555 on Oct 6, 2011 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Newhouse.

He played really well vs Chi. Against Denver, they had a chance to dissect his game and find out what his weaknesses are and exploit them. I think the matchup against Miller, also factored into it. I would expect Newhouse to struggle w/ a pure speed rusher. He’s still getting used to NFL game speed.

to convince me that he isn’t better than Brees.

He's better than both

I don’t see either of those guys firing 50-60 yard line drive throws with pinpoint accuracy or firing missiles into tiny windows. He’s the only one with the arm strength to do that. Also, neither of them can run like Rodgers can.

by sheehan on Oct 7, 2011 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed. He’s surpassed them both imo.

One thing I was thinking about today was our 09’ season, and how most of the other elite QB’s have phenomenal OL’s. Brady and Brees are both great but how good have their OL’s been, and how solid have their running games’ been? For Brady, both of those things have been rock solid for him for basically as long as he’s been playing. For Brees, both have been pretty solid aside from last season, when their running game really struggled. And what’s interesting, is Brees struggled quite a bit too (really high INT number).

If you really think about it, it’s downright amazing how good Rodgers was in 2009 despite playing behind what was easily one of the worst OL’s in the league. I mean seriously, for those first 9 or 10 weeks, we didn’t EVER consistently form a pocket for him, and he still was able to have success. He had to run for his life on every play — despite the fact that most teams only rushed 4. And somehow, iirc, he managed to only throw 7 INTs.

And in 2010 we had absolutely no semblance of a running game until week 13 or 14, lost Finley, and he was still able to be absolutely fantastic.

I think it’d be really interesting to see how a guy like Brady or Brees performs when they’re having to move around in the pocket every play. I have no doubt they’d still probably be pretty good but I doubt they’d have the numbers they normally put up.

Sorry, went off on a tangent there.

90% of Brady’s offense revolves around him hitting 5-10 yard checkdowns to Welker and his TEs. Rodgers would have a completion % of about 95% if he played this way.

Yeah, it really does. And the dude just sits back there basically untouched for most games. He’s good but how much better is that making him look? I’d say quite a bit.

I can’t help but look at our game vs. the Pats last year, and think about how I guess for lack of a better word “normal” he looked. We started hitting him and making him move a little bit, and all of the sudden he was airmailing passes and looking rattled. The Jets game in the playoffs was like that too. The Jets got some pressure and all of the sudden he was missing guys left and right.

Ok, so far we got:

Single season records:

Passer rating: Manning 2004 121.1…Rodgers is 124.5
Completion pct: Brees 2009 -70.6%…..Rodgers 73%
Yds: Marino 5084….Rodgers on pace for 5300
TDs: Brady 2007 – 50 Rodgers on pace for 48

This year Cam has been good, Brees excellent, Brady sick, but nobody is playing out of his mind in all these levels like #12.

2011 is still a young season, but there is strong reason to think that at least one of these records will fall at the end of it.

If other records happen, I’ll celebrate them and enjoy them. But the only one that REALLY matters is most W’s at end of season and most SB in that year! Last I checked they only give the Lombardi Trophy to One team a year. Any other record is a distant 2nd, and not really even worth discussing IMO.
