Open Letter to Daily Norseman
Dear Daily Norseman,
This letter is in response to your recent postings at your website. The rhetoric and postings at your site have set back the legitimacy of the entire sbnation network of sites. In a month where sbnation has gotten more positive publicity then any time before your actions have been childish and without merit. This week sbnation was proud to have Ben Jones of Black Shoe Diaries appear on MSNBC, ESPN, and ESPN radio in the wake of the saga of Penn State, and the Daily Norseman decided to follow that up with outlandish claims.
Many of these sites have taken on their own personality, much of which is the personality of the authors and contributing writers. I personally have thought that this network is a great place to interact with fans of my team when I am displaced from the home of the fan base. The growth of these sites is both exciting for the readers and the authors as it gives them a new opportunity.
I must say I do not see the same opportunities coming for the writers at Daily Norseman. Your outlandish claims that a restaurateur tried to commit attempted murder based on a twitter statement made by a player is both inappropriate and irresponsible. Your open letter to ESPN although with merit is short sighted and uneducated. In case you haven’t watched MNF football in the last three weeks you will realize that the opening has been exclusive to the home team. In case you haven’t watched MNF in the last three years you would notice the Gruden falls all over the winning team in every airing. I agree with that fact that it may be time for the WWL to look into a new broadcasting combo but this is of no direct result of some love affair that they may have with the Packers. This is simply the norm.
As an author and “keeper” of an sbnation site your obligation to your community and the sbnation community as a whole is much greater than that of the general contributing public. Your calls of warning that anyone from APC would be banned based on commenting on your post is immature. I understand that every community has its own bad apples, people who are “trolling” or directly trying to incite at a rival community. However, for you as a writer at a sbnation to openly call out those who have a differing opinion of you and foster a community of intolerance should not be accepted. You have a responsibility to promote discussion, maintain the status quo, and not incite other members of your community. I contend that your actions in the last 24 hours have been no better than those of the few bad apples that you have so publicly complained about.
I have read a number of your articles and always enjoyed reading articles at your site and those of other NFL teams. I am a football junky and love to get the fans perspective. However, I really think you should reconsider some of your outlandish claims and actions.

ESPN rides the Packers too much?
They’re the 9-0 defending champions and were winning in a rout, but you’re right, maybe they should’ve been praising Ponders ability to…uh, I dunno throw the ball late? It’s amazing how quickly they forget 09 when the Vikings were media darlings. Of course, the NFL still hated them then too. That’s why the Saints beat them.
by Charlie Kelly on Nov 15, 2011 9:36 AM CST via mobile reply actions
Exactly. Rodgers is playing the game at an elite level that happens very rarely, of course people are going to fawn over it when they are broadcasting. I don’t know why, but I think the Viking fanbase is one of the most fickle out there. I read the posts on FB from my friends and its kind of depressing. Whining about refs and announcers? Really. Get over it.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
I'm not sure why Vikings fans don't realize
how pathetic they appear with all their sniveling about conspiracies, favoritism, calls by referees, etc. Really, they need some type of very large group therapy.
Or a lifetime supply of Kotex
Football is not life or death, anyone who takes it as serious as some of the folks over there needs to rearrange their priorities.

excuse me, viking fan here...please don't lump us all together...
i can’t for the life of me figure out why a certain somebody is so irrational about all of this.
his personal issues and rantings just rile up a bunch of the lemmings and it turns into a big circle jerk. i was on the viking thread all week and all night last night, and didn’t see any of the stuff that is claimed to be there about packer fans. maybe he is just trying to be controversial to get more hits on the daily norseman, who knows. but we are not all like that, and i love it when knowledgable fans from other teams post comments on the norseman. i saw the “banhammer” article too. that was just stupid, imo.
p.s. great win for you guys last night. your team is looking unbeatable. good luck.

That was exactly the purpose of the letter
Someone that is a contributor and “leader” of the site should not be the irrational one. The “keepers” of the site cannot control the rantings of the users, but they sure can control who is a keeper and how the keepers act. It is giving off a sad reputation for vikings and sbnation as a whole.
i liked your letter, i got that it was in response to the ridiculous one posted on the dn.
but your’s was well written and right on the mark, imo.

no, i agree that they sweat the winner too much.
they start out with their favorite, and then they go nuts for the team winning and playing the best. They’re not good sportscasters, they just act like the greatest homers alive. They must feel like I did when I was listening to the Brewers/Dbags series where the announcers were simply gooshing all over the Dbags left and right, despite the fact that the brewers won the series. it got so far that i couldn’t even watch the broadcasting. I’m sure they felt the same way. Gruden is just a fan, and has no business announcing anything.
I know, the packers are the champs, 9-0, superlative galore, but if you want to listen to homerisms, you should listen to the local broadcasts. national broadcasts shouldn’t be the forum for homerism. that’s how a team becomes hated – by alienating the fan bases of other teams.

Can we agree
That ESPN pretty much sucks the dick of whoever’s gonna net them the most ad dollars and move on?
I’m right there with ya – it got to ridiculous levels of slurp last night, but their agenda is clear. They are there to make you, the sports consumer, watch the advertisers’ products as often as they can. Their formula for doing so is tried and tested and at this point, you don’t count anymore. As an informed, passionate, and serious fan, you are just getting in the way of their revenue.

Yep
A few childish people thought it would be fun to troll, almost like a rite of passage.
However, if Gates believes that we, as a community, incite people to go over there and troll, he is far less bright than I give him credit for. I get the Viking homer-ism, and the fierce loyalty, and I admire those traits. But he takes it way to far. I just hope Gates doesn’t actually believe what he writes. By setting his example, he encourages other posters at DN to follow along with him, and believe the things he writes.

Yeah, I found the Adrian Peterson glass story to be a stretch.
Has Gates ever heard of an accident? My goodness. No one in their right mind could know that the particular meal in question was meant for Peterson, and even if so, I can’t think of a single restaurant owner who would allow that sort of thing.

It seems like he drums up controversy with these troll baiting rants simply to draw attention to himself and his site. Notice how nobody really trolls here? Is it because the other 31 teams have more mature fans? Anyone who has read something at POD or DN knows that’s not true. agreed. I visit all the NFL team blogs here and it's always DN that has these posts about the Packers
The Jets hate the Pats and vice versa and I never see any of the hate that Gates promotes at DN over at Pat’s Pulpit or Gang Green Nation. All the subtle shots at the Packers are unnecessary and immature. And you can tell that blog for the most part has taken his personality, wishing for injuries to Aaron Rodgers and whatnot. I have never seen anyone (at least of the regular posters) wish for injuries to any players of opposing teams. It’s comical and sad at the same time.

Why do you think not everyone can play in the NFL or football for that matter; why some people play sports and some don’t? Part of it is due to attitude and work ethic, but a lot of it is from genetics.

Is not to even mention them. So, naturally, what does he do? He invites them and eggs them on. The fact is that we are allowed to post over there as long as we are respectful. He’s emotional over a big loss and wants to take it out on any other fan that comes by, if they are trolling or not. Let him be a baby for a bit and hopefully he will calm down.

Thank you
You have a responsibility to promote discussion, maintain the status quo, and not incite other members of your community.
As a Packer fan who has spent his entire life living in Minnesota, I enjoy having good-natured discussions with my friends who cheer for the Vikings. Of course there is razzing that goes on back and forth but everything is good natured and respectful. When I first came to APC and saw how well the site is run with admins such as Brandon who do such a fine job, I thought that this would be a great place to discuss not only the Packers, but the Vikings over on DN because if one SB site is run so well, they all should. Right?
We all know where this story ends. As much as I like hearing about the Vikings from a fans point of view, I have found that going over to DN is only tolerable when the Vikings are doing well. The last two years have simply been, for lack of a better word, disgusting. I stopped trying to share my own opinions because even though they are made with the best of intentions, they are perceived as inflammatory. The level of hostility on the site is so unbelievable, especially regarding. In the last two years, Mr. Gates has taken it upon himself to write lengthy articles about how Aaron Rodgers is a terrible human being to failing to notice an elderly fan requesting an autograph and now this attempt on Adrian Peterson’s life. According to Gates, everything and everyone affiliated with the Packers is simply damnable. And yet, on the flip side, you never see any op-eds written by APC admins about things like Chris Cook or any other extracurricular stories about the Vikings off-the-field issues, which is why sites like APC are so much more tolerable than DN. It isn’t about what teams we cheer for. It’s about content matter and presenting relavant material in a professional manner.
The fantastic thing about all of this? If Gates were to come over here and lay into everyone for speaking out against his professional and maturity level, he’d be allowed to do so. However, if any of us were to talk this openly about how DN is handled over on their site, regardless of the respect level, we’d be banned. Ironic, doncha think?

Jealousy does funny things to people
football does not build character, it reveals character.
I think this is the experience that most fans will have with the opposing fans sites.
It’s no worse or better than any other rivalry. I saw the trolls come in to our site and can’t say I blame Mr. Gates or Eric for any actions they took. I’m not aware of every issue they saw but I noticed enough childish trolling and stupidity that appeared to mostly stem from here (sadly) to feel that any banning was probably well justified.
There’s good fun rivalry and good-natured joking and teasing and then there was the trolling I saw during that game AND in the previous game’s thread, too (between our Vikes and the Packers). :(
Unfortunately the behavior of many Packer fans (particularly in Minnesota) has sort of tarnished your team’s fans’ image among opponents. You can only deal with so much elitism before it starts to wear thin. I imagine that leads to far less patience when it comes to managing a site like this.
No, that is not my experience with any other sites.
and I’ve hopped around to a lot of different ones. Hell, I spent some time on the Eagles site before they found out what a fraud that team was. They still didn’t have anyone close to what Chris Gates is. I don’t really have a problem with the quick banhammer, it’s just his general tone & lack of subtlety.
Unfortunately the behavior of many Packer fans (particularly in Minnesota) has sort of tarnished your team’s fans’ image among opponents.

Grossman: Sup, you insulin needing bitch! The sex cannon has arrived! Now get the hell out of my locker room, you chinless mother fucker!
Not much - it's all anecdotal, really.
In the circles I’m in presently (here on a Navy Base in the Middle East – Bahrain), I rub shoulders with a decent variety of NFC North fans and/or NFL fans. While some are surely just jealous at the Packers’ current successes, I feel that most are fairly good barometers of public opinion. Most seem to find Packer fans a bit too elitist/arrogant, in general.
Whether that’s fair or not is honestly hard to prove (anecdotal evidence being what it is) but I hear FAR less griping about Vikings fans overall. I suppose if you want to poke fun you could easily say that’s because you have to actually BE someone before anyone pays much attention to you. LOL
Either way, good luck to you folks and I hope we can get some games back from your team next year! SKOL VIKINGS!!
Perhaps
Green Bay’s success has made us a bit cockier. I have an old friend who lives out in LA, and he touts the Packers success. His roommate is an Atlanta Falcons fan, so I think my friend brings up the playoffs last year pretty often.
I will say that real life vs. SBN is different, and that is partly due to Chris Gates. He does a lot of positive things for DN, but he also does a lot of negative things. Sure, he’s your hero because he bans all the trolls, but did you ever stop to think why there are so many trolls to begin with?

But I don't want the winning to cease
Oh, whining. Well, much like the winning, there is no end in sight.
My views of the Vikings fans
I lived in Minnesota for the first 18 years of my life, so I got an up close and personal look at those fans and those fans are some of my closest friends so I got to interact with them frequently.
The issues of the Vikings fans are due to a number of different things. Bitterness, anger, frustration, and jealousy just to name a few. They are angry that their team can’t seem do anything right. They are frustrated of the fact that their team can’t seem to get a clue and is 10 years behind everyone else in the league. They look across the border and they are just plain jealous. They are jealous of what the Packers and their fans have. They are jealous of the special relationship between the Packers and their fans. This all leads to bitterness. Boy are they bitter.
However a lot of it is their own darn fault. In fact most of it is.
The Viking fans seem to think that their team should be able to do whatever they want and not pay the consequences of their actions.. For example the whole Favre saga. They tampered with Favre, yet they believe that everyone should turn their heads and act like that never happened. They broke an unbreakable rule(which i will get into later) when they signed Favre yet they don’t seem to think that they did anything wrong nor do they think they should have to pay the consequences of that decision.
When they signed Favre, they urinated all over the long and rich history of the cornerstone franchise of the most popular entertainment activity in the United States of America. Now I know the fans didn’t “sign” Favre but oh boy did they ever encourage it.
That is why I just sit back and watch this stadium saga unfold and say to myself “if the Vikings move, I will have no sympathy for their fans”. I am not saying all Viking fans are like this because they aren’t. There are a decent number of Viking fans who I would honestly feel bad for. However, for a large majority of them, no, I have no sympathy for them. They deserve what they get. In fact when you are willing compromise the integrity, purity, dignity, and honor of the most popular sport in this country, when you are willing and ready to damage, tarnish, and trash the glorious history of the cornerstone franchise of the NFL, you do not deserve to have a team.
it may seem like I am still bitter about Favre. I am not. There is a part of me and most Packer fans that is and always will be angry with him, however, we have moved on. But the scare is permanent.
I also want everyone to understand that i am not lumping every Viking fan together here because I am not. These are just my opinions of Viking fans due to my interactions with them.

Signing Favre was urinating on the Packers?
Favre gave the Vikings the best chance to win his first year with the team, and it is not like the Vikings took Favre away from the Packers. It was the Jets who signed him. If the Vikings did indeed tamper with Favre, the league would have done something about it.
You guys knew what you had in Rodgers and made the right decision to jettison an aging QB who was a distraction to your young team. Why act like we cajoled Favre into leaving?
It was a business decision, and as much as it may have offended you, it was in the best interest of the Vikings at that time as we had no other option.
To say that you will feel no sympathy for Vikings fans if we lose our team is simply saying that your hatred for the Vikings has blinded you to the point where you do not see the consequences of that outcome. You do realize that if we move it is going to mess up a dynamic in the NFC North that dates back to 1961? Do you really want the NFC north to consist of the Lions, Bears, Packers and Rams? You will just end up hating a different fanbase.
Your post seems like nothing more than a veiled insult.

Yeah, Favre was the one hell-bent on signing with the Vikings.
He BS’d his way out of his NJY contract (lots of incompetance on the Jets’ behalf, actually).
They got Rex Ryan out of the deal though
And now Fake Rex Ryan posts videos here every week, so win/win?!?

I won't argue against that...
Favre REALLY wanted to stick-it to the Packers for what he felt was a raw deal.
I didn’t see it that way. You can’t, as a QB, expect that your team is going to sit a prospect behind you for 2 extra years when it is obvious he has the talent to start and likely out-perform you. You have to know that with such an important position, the team is going to make a move if they have a replacement that is on par with what you bring to the table.

I think you're way off in saying that Packer fans will have to
hate on a different fanbase. Don’t get me wrong, none of us like the Bears, but at least with the Bears there is a respect there, as the Bears are a franchise of the same vintage as Green Bay and have won championships in their history.
The Vikings don’t have the history of either the Bears or Packers and certainly don’t have the championships, but Viking fans chirp like their team belongs in the same conversation. I don’t know if Packer fans would ever “hate” another fanbase as much as they hate Viking fans.
As a personal example, I’ll say this. I’m a much bigger of college football than I am of the NFL. I’m a bigger fan of the Hawks and follow them much close than I do the Packers. Living in Iowa, that makes a good bit of sense, as the majority of most teams fanbases are local. That being said…..there is NOTHING – and I mean NOTHING in sports that I enjoy more than the Green Bay Packers kicking the shit out of the Vikings.

So we as fans have to earn your respect by having our team win a championship?
Pfft.
Football teams are football teams. They all play on the same fields, using the same rules, and fight the same battles. To say one team deserves more respect that the other because it has won championships in the past is just plain silly. Yes, it is nice to win championships, yes I am sure it feels great. But to belittle another fan base just because their team has yet to win is akin to standing over a child who has just dropped his ice cream cone going “Nyah-nyah-ne-nyah-nah, you dropped your ice cream”.
We as Vikings fans have had to endure the worst, 50 years of no championships yet we still maintain loyalty to our team. That has to count for something.
And if you truly believe that if the Rams join the NFC north that your fans will not hate on them, then you are delusional.

Rams vs. Vikings
And if you truly believe that if the Rams join the NFC north that your fans will not hate on them, then you are delusional.
I think it would be a change in the dynamics of the division. Whereas now, GB sort of has a dual-rivalry with fierce border battles with Min & Chi, if the switch would happen, then the Bears would have the two main border battles. There’s already Cubs-Cardinals & to a lesser extent Blackhawks-Blues.
The Cle/LA Rams were in the same division as Lions/Packers/Bears from ‘37-’66, so there’s some history there. The Packers have only played the Rams 10 fewer games than the Vikings. I do think there would be more hate towards the Rams than there is now, but they wouldn’t get as much hate as the Lions or Vikings now.

Grossman: Sup, you insulin needing bitch! The sex cannon has arrived! Now get the hell out of my locker room, you chinless mother fucker!
Right, there is some history from back in the AFL days...
But that rivalry would not be as much fun.
The thing that makes the Vikings-Packers rivalry so much fun is our proximity to each other. I can drive 2 miles and be in Wisconsin, which I often do on Sundays when our Liquor stores are closed.
There are plenty of Sconnies that work in my office, and we have a lot of fun going back and forth as fans of both teams. That kind of dynamic simply does not happen when you are separated by 500 miles.
No, I agree
I want to keep all the division opponents in border states.

I find myself wondering if you saw the point when it went by.
I’m guessing not.
Why would Packer fans hate on Rams fans? I don’t think Packer fans “hate” any other fanbase in the division. We respect the Bears – their team has some history, and while intense the banter (at least to me) seems to be respectful). The Lions haven’t been relevant at any point in my lifetime, so Packer fans have no reason to hate them. Their team has never won anything and their fans don’t go around acting like they have. In other words, Lion fans are the exact opposite of Viking fans.

For good or ill the main writer in question writes from emotion. Sometimes this brings in some good funny stuff. Sometimes it leads to petty, bitter rants which do nothing but promote the activity he is derailing against. I hope you understand some of the incredulity here, then
When he takes one stupid, drunken incident from a month ago and blows that up to “OMG APC is a troll factory siccing their troll soldiers on all that is good and holy over here RAR!” It happened once, and all but one of the individuals involved has publicly expressed regret that it got to where it did.
I’m sorry that they get tolls, but that’s pretty much the norm on the Internets. That some of these trolls dress in green and gold is unfortunate. However, we do not make a habit of grooming them here and constantly siccing them on DN, as he has implied. I’m sorry he feels persecuted, but the massive amount of negative crap he spews on his community about our community is totally unjustified, IMHO.

I get it, but I also get that things like this feed what you are fighting
He’s been touchy about APC because of posts like this as well as the trolling incident with terpy. I really get why people get pissed too. When I saw the first general ban last night I checked to see if I was banned myself. I think I have a good rep over there, but I also know I have clashed with Gates once or twice and have dumped on the Vikings here on occasion as well, and so I would of been pissed if I was caught in the general ban.
However, I guess I don’t see how a huge bitch session about the incident helps change minds or mend fences. It convinces those that already hates us how terrible we are and it convinces us that those comments are irrational and jerkish. The end result is just that the problem becomes intensified instead of resolved.
by PackApologist on Nov 15, 2011 2:57 PM CST up reply actions
I don't think the initial post was needed here. I agree with that.
People can go over there and post as freely as they please under his rules. Just understand his rules aren’t really normal when compared to other sites, and you may just find yourself “unjustly” banned for being who you are. Just gotta deal with it.
I am all for keeping our business to ourselves and letting them fester over their horrible season there.

We're reading his site - he seems to like that
What he doesn’t like are trolls, especially Packer fan trolls. I’m down with that – I don’t like trolls, either. Hell, I’ve got a special little Chrome add-in for SBN that lets me kill posts from trolls.
The trouble is the logic leap here:
- All trolls are bad
- All trolls are Packer fans
- APC is full of Packer fans
Therefore: APC is full of trolls. QED.
That’s painting with a very broad brush. I don’t like to see the people I interact with here getting crapped on just because they wanna talk football with fans of a different team. Obviously, his words do not apply to me – I’ve never joined DN so I’ve never posted there or been under general threat of a ban from the site – but his words are spilling over from “Packer trolls suck” to “APC sucks because it is full of trolls.”
I agree – his site, his rules. But unless he wants to close his community so that only the anointed may read his words, he is open to criticism from anyone with a browser. As I am a member of the community he is maligning, I have a right to read and comment on his overly-broad criticism. I ain’t saying he shouldn’t blast trolls, and I ain’t saying he has to love Packer fans, but I am saying that until he walks that shit back several notches, he will be subject to justified ridicule.

I don't think he was making a joke with that comment.
Also, Ted’s one of the good guys who I’m sure was understandably quite upset after that game. It’s time to let this one go and move on.
"If only a face could talk" -- John Madden
To be fair...
Actually, he did make the threat. But he did it during the immediate aftermath of the game and from what I can piece together he played the biggest part in the subsequent un-bannings.
I respect Ted greatly and have always enjoyed his writing – he’s VERY good at it. My tenure at APC has been about a year and in that time I don’t think we’ve ever had any beef with Ted. Everybody seems to respect him and we’re certainly not going to hold one comment in the emotional heat of a divisional loss against him.

It's pretty simple really
We’re 9-0 and they’re 2-7. Chris is unhappy, but that’s nothing new. He’d be unhappy if the situations were reversed. What is most important to him now is that he in some small way make us unhappy too. It’s not working. I find his response hilarious and predictable. Chris Gates’ tears taste delicious.

Your options:
A. Fight fire with fire and post pictures of good-looking mostly naked dudes to erode the other posters’ self-esteem (provided they have any). [I strongly endorse this]
2. Post macros and memes to avoid serious contemplation of the misogynistic tendencies of APC’s male-dominated membership. [This will just make you sad]
Γ. Wax poetic on the dismantling of women’s rights and the demeaning of all progress made in the past century. [VOTES FOR WOMEN!]
IV. Make a sammich. [Yum.]
I do realize I brought this on myself.....
I just don’t have the time or the energy or the know how do one or two. Lectures would be lost on this crowd I think, so I guess I’m stuck with making sammiches. (And I hope that just means sandwiches, like ham and cheese, and nothing that I need to look up on Urban Dictionary.)

Is this pic visible to anyone?
Well, for anyone else who cannot see the picture, I shall be forced to describe it in painful detail: It is a classic 21st century meme poster with a black border. The caption reads “AWKWARD BONER” in a large typeface and “WAIT, WHAT?” in a rather small typeface. The photograph depicts a somewhat heavyset woman from the neck down. She appears to be at some sort of party-like gathering. You can tell the individual is a woman because she has breasts (although they are rather unshapely). She also happens to be wearing a skirt. And, for some unknown reason there appears to be what looks to my naked eye to be a relatively small, erect penis protruding underneath her skirt. Trust me, at least 1% of the users would have ellohelled their asses off.

Meanwhile, in New York
Dungy: …and that is why I think the Giants will win this game tonight.
Patrick: Thanks Tony. All right everyone, I hope you enjoy tonight’s Giants/Vikings game. We’ll see you back at halftime.
Dungy: See you in about an hour Rodney.
Harrison: Fuck off, Dungy.
Dungy:…
(Door opens)

Grossman: Hey, Tony. Can I talk to you for a minute?
Dungy: Uh, sure Rex. But why aren’t you with the team? They’re playing tonight.
Grossman: Oh, I’ve got it covered.
(Meanwhile in the Vikings locker room)

Frazier: Alright guys, our season may be over and this may be our last season as an actual team. However, that doesn’t mean we need to give up tonight. We can play the spoiler and show up a playoff team on national TV. Who’s ready?
Team: We are!
Frazier: Hey Rex, is everything all right? You haven’t said a word since we got here.
Grossman:….
Frazier: Rex?
/Takes off Rex’s helmet

Frazier: Fred Savage!?!
Savage: Oh, hey man…
Frazier: What are you doing here?
Savage: Oh, Rex paid me $50 and promised to stop banging my wife if I did this.
Frazier:….
Allen: I don’t get it. Oh, hey! I just got a text. It’s from Rex, maybe he’ll tell us wher…It’s a penis.
Peterson: Son of a bit…
(Meanwhile, back in the SNF studio)
Dungy: Well, what do you need to talk with me about Rex?
Grossman: I have some confessions to make. I realize that I’ve been a horrible person for a long time and I’d like to make amends and get my life on track. You’re known around the league for mentoring troubled players and I figured maybe you could help.
Dungy: Absolutely, Rex. We can start by you telling me what it is that you’re struggling with.
Grossman: Ok, so as you probably know, I’ve had relations with a lot of women. Fat, skinny, married, single, pregnant, handicapped. It didn’t really matter. I just couldn’t stop myself.
Dungy: Yes, I’ve heard some of the stories. Sex addiction is a common problem for a lot of athletes today, Rex. You need to fight those urges though because they are unnatural. What else are you struggling with?
Grossman: I once stole a handicapped guy’s wheelchair and then used it to panhandle on the streets of Chicago.
Dungy: Well, that’s…
Grossman: I once masturbated into Jay Cutler’s hair gel bottle.
Dungy:…Rex, I think that…
Grossman: Whew, feels good to get that off my chest, you know? I feel like an entirely new person.
Dungy: That’s great, Rex. It seems as though you’re finally on the right track. Now, if you just wanna partake in a quick prayer with me.

Grossman: Ha, got your ass Dungy.
Dungy: What?
Grossman: I didn’t come here to repent, I’m the fucking sex cannon, man. I get more pussy than a recycled sanitary napkin. You think I’d give that shit up? I love my life, bro.
Dungy:….
Grossman: And get that bible away from me, bro. The only bible I need is “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell” by my guy, Tucker Max. Of course, I have it on audiobook because reading is for fags.
Dungy: Did you seriously come all this way to harass me?
Grossman: What? Fuck no, just killin’ some time. I’m gonna go bang those two interns over there.
/Makes masturbating gesture towards interns
//Pumps fist
Grossman: Yea, Dung, it’s just that they don’t get off till eight. Of course, until they get off again at 8:15.
/Tries to high five Dungy
//Gets a Heineken seemingly out of nowhere
Dungy: You’re an awful person, Rex.
Grossman: (Finishes beer, grabs another) Yea, well, you’re a bitch. Later!
Harrison: He’s got a point, Tony.

So, while realizing that this thread has essentially turned into another "open thread"...
… can I ask why it is anyone at APC cares enough about the DN to write this letter at all? I’m not sure why it matters. A couple of years ago when the Vikings were winning, some Vikings fans showed up over here in droves making asses of themselves, but most of the people at the DN never posted here at all.
Now that the Packers are winning, some Packer fans showed up over there and made asses out of themselves.
Shit happens. Gates handles it differently than Brandon does: he drops the banhammer and defends Vikings fans on his site for Vikings fans. Brandon takes a hands off approach. While I have my preference between the two and I haven’t hidden it, I don’t understand why it is that people at APC who thinks Gates and the DN suck need to talk about that (pretty much ad nauseum) at a Packers site.
Honestly, I just don’t get this site at all.
"fortunate, but also lucky"
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 17, 2011 5:24 PM CST reply actions
I don't think Gates and the DN suck
As a frequent reader of the DN, I take exception when Chris writes inflammatory shit about the Packers, Packer fans, and members of APC. His conspiracy theories go beyond trash talk and he influences some DN members to the point of making it a less than enjoyable experience for a Packer fan to be part of their community.
But I have to ask, why the hell do you care why anyone here cares? Are you really attempting to satisfy your curiosity, or are you trying to make the members of this community feel like idiots?
by Ben T on Nov 17, 2011 5:41 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Mostly I'm just curious.
If that makes anyone over here feel like an idiot, well, I don’t see that as my problem. But I suppose you don’t believe either of those things. To each his own (which as it happens is kind of my point.)
I see you over at the DN too and I see that you regularly engage in productive conversations there. From what I can tell, you generally try to engage the DN members who are open to talking to a fan of another team, which seems like a pretty reasonable approach to me. I’m actually not on the football SBN sites all that often relative to the baseball sites, but I do go to the DN for the same reason you do, I suspect. It’s certainly true that Gates writes inflammatory stuff. I don’t deny it, and I don’t really enjoy it when he does, particularly when that vitriol is directed at the Packers, since I’ve loved the Packers for almost 40 years.
But it’s still a Viking site, and I don’t think it’s all that shocking that there would be some anti-Packer vitriol on a Viking site. Knowing that, and knowing I don’t really enjoy reading articles crapping on my team, I stay away from the DN in the days before and for a couple of days immediately after, and when I see stuff that Chris writes about the Packers, I generally don’t read it, or at most I give it a skim to see if it’s worth delving into further. It keeps me calmer, and I still get to enjoy some pretty compelling writing about the football, which the DN in general (and yes, Chris too) turns out on a fairly regular basis.
I suppose I haven’t always felt that way. That’s a fair criticism. Those interested in doing so can probably find me venting my spleen about Gates here before I had a change of heart about things several months ago. Maybe it’s a “zeal of the converted” sort of thing.
I guess in the end I just think that in a year where the Packers are playing the way they’re playing, Packers fans should have better things to talk about than the way a Vikings site is run.
"fortunate, but also lucky"
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 17, 2011 6:01 PM CST up reply actions
I agree wholeheartedly about the writing at DN
The only reason I asked if you were trying to make members of this community feel like idiots is your last line: “Honestly, I just don’t get this site at all.” Of course, you do get the site — what you are really talking about is the people. In my experience, when I tell someone I don’t get them, it’s meant as an insult. Still not your problem, but your intent seems clear.
I think when any team plays this well, oddly enough there seems to be less to talk about between the fans.
Well,
Packers fans should have better things to talk about than the way a Vikings site is run.
Which is probably one of the reasons this thread degenerated into kittens and sammiches within the first 10% of the comments!

I’m a Packer fan, yes I am. Have been since 75 and will always be one. I’ve stayed away from the site (for the most part) by choice, because I got tired of arguing with the same people all the time. I get weak when I see thread like this, because I just don’t get all the DN/Gates hate anymore.
But yeah, it’s hypocritical. I’ll admit that.

Drink beer
And hang on the Open [Game] threads. If it’s not a Packer game, you can be guaranteed some hilarity. If it’s a Packer game, well, you can be guaranteed something, and probably a lot of it.

I second the motion
And I have a feeling I know who you’re talking about when it comes to arguing. I used to say “just avoid him” but you can’t because he won’t avoid you.
I don’t have an answer on how to avoid him, but I have learned to just laugh. The more riled up he gets, the funnier it becomes. He won’t answer your questions, he changes subject/argument, makes straw man (identity hint not intended but not avoided) arguments, gloats, acts like a child, and when cornered just repeats what’s already been said or drops out altogether. And he usually just reiterates what he reads elsewhere, so it’s frustrating that he so rarely has an original thought . . . but that’s what I’ve learned to love, or at least tolerate.

I guess my thought has always been:
-Leave the Packer vitrol to the comments but when it makes it into articles it seems like pretty weak writing. Doesn’t take a great writer to spew hatred and bash on people that he clearly doesn’t know. I find it ironic when people from MN bash on people from WI when honestly they are almost impossible to tell apart if you put them next to each other…same goofy ooh sound on their O’s, small town people are the same in both states, big city people are pretty similar. The demographics compare closely, the state geographies are about the same…its just ridiculous. Those are usually the only times I jump in these days, since I’ve lived for over decade in each state.

I think some people care because they got banned for not trolling
Other people care because they enjoy schadenfreude and can’t stay away from DN.
Me? I’m just here to provide sammiches.

"... because they got banned for not trolling."
Fair enough. Hadn’t thought of that, and while I had the good fortune of missing the event itself, I did see that Gates apparently unbanned many he had previously banned and then essentially admitted he over-reacted.
Thanks.

I'm kinda starting to feel like the Packers hate children.
There are soooo many videos of kids crying because the Pack spanked their team.

That's just the odds
We’ve been spanking lots of teams over the last year. You won’t see a single video from the last three months of a kid crying over what the Colts did to their team. . . .

Unless those kids are Colts fans.

I have nothing important to say at all.
but this thread currently has 666 comments so me and Bob Griese thought we should bring over some good karma.
