Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Open Letter to Daily Norseman

Dear Daily Norseman,

This letter is in response to your recent postings at your website.  The rhetoric and postings at your site have set back the legitimacy of the entire sbnation network of sites.  In a month where sbnation has gotten more positive publicity then any time before your actions have been childish and without merit.  This week sbnation was proud to have Ben Jones of Black Shoe Diaries appear on MSNBC, ESPN, and ESPN radio in the wake of the saga of Penn State, and the Daily Norseman decided to follow that up with outlandish claims.

Many of these sites have taken on their own personality, much of which is the personality of the authors and contributing writers.  I personally have thought that this network is a great place to interact with fans of my team when I am displaced from the home of the fan base.  The growth of these sites is both exciting for the readers and the authors as it gives them a new opportunity.

I must say I do not see the same opportunities coming for the writers at Daily Norseman. Your outlandish claims that a restaurateur tried to commit attempted murder based on a twitter statement made by a player is both inappropriate and irresponsible.  Your open letter to ESPN although with merit is short sighted and uneducated.  In case you haven’t watched MNF football in the last three weeks you will realize that the opening has been exclusive to the home team.  In case you haven’t watched MNF in the last three years you would notice the Gruden falls all over the winning team in every airing.  I agree with that fact that it may be time for the WWL to look into a new broadcasting combo but this is of no direct result of some love affair that they may have with the Packers.  This is simply the norm.

As an author and “keeper” of an sbnation site your obligation to your community and the sbnation community as a whole is much greater than that of the general contributing public.  Your calls of warning that anyone from APC would be banned based on commenting on your post is immature.  I understand that every community has its own bad apples, people who are “trolling” or directly trying to incite at a rival community.  However, for you as a writer at a sbnation to openly call out those who have a differing opinion of you and foster a community of intolerance should not be accepted.  You have a responsibility to promote discussion, maintain the status quo, and not incite other members of your community.  I contend that your actions in the last 24 hours have been no better than those of the few bad apples that you have so publicly complained about.

I have read a number of your articles and always enjoyed reading articles at your site and those of other NFL teams.  I am a football junky and love to get the fans perspective.  However, I really think you should reconsider some of your outlandish claims and actions.

ESPN rides the Packers too much?

They’re the 9-0 defending champions and were winning in a rout, but you’re right, maybe they should’ve been praising Ponders ability to…uh, I dunno throw the ball late? It’s amazing how quickly they forget 09 when the Vikings were media darlings. Of course, the NFL still hated them then too. That’s why the Saints beat them.

by Charlie Kelly on Nov 15, 2011 9:36 AM CST via mobile reply actions

Exactly. Rodgers is playing the game at an elite level that happens very rarely, of course people are going to fawn over it when they are broadcasting. I don’t know why, but I think the Viking fanbase is one of the most fickle out there. I read the posts on FB from my friends and its kind of depressing. Whining about refs and announcers? Really. Get over it.

how pathetic they appear with all their sniveling about conspiracies, favoritism, calls by referees, etc. Really, they need some type of very large group therapy.

That was exactly the purpose of the letter

Someone that is a contributor and “leader” of the site should not be the irrational one. The “keepers” of the site cannot control the rantings of the users, but they sure can control who is a keeper and how the keepers act. It is giving off a sad reputation for vikings and sbnation as a whole.

no, i agree that they sweat the winner too much.

they start out with their favorite, and then they go nuts for the team winning and playing the best. They’re not good sportscasters, they just act like the greatest homers alive. They must feel like I did when I was listening to the Brewers/Dbags series where the announcers were simply gooshing all over the Dbags left and right, despite the fact that the brewers won the series. it got so far that i couldn’t even watch the broadcasting. I’m sure they felt the same way. Gruden is just a fan, and has no business announcing anything.

I know, the packers are the champs, 9-0, superlative galore, but if you want to listen to homerisms, you should listen to the local broadcasts. national broadcasts shouldn’t be the forum for homerism. that’s how a team becomes hated – by alienating the fan bases of other teams.

Yep

A few childish people thought it would be fun to troll, almost like a rite of passage.

However, if Gates believes that we, as a community, incite people to go over there and troll, he is far less bright than I give him credit for. I get the Viking homer-ism, and the fierce loyalty, and I admire those traits. But he takes it way to far. I just hope Gates doesn’t actually believe what he writes. By setting his example, he encourages other posters at DN to follow along with him, and believe the things he writes.

Something like proteins, something like whey proteins and other supplements. I’d be willing to bet the vast majority of them do not take PED’s. Some of them do, but the vast majority don’t know a days.

Why do you think not everyone can play in the NFL or football for that matter; why some people play sports and some don’t? Part of it is due to attitude and work ethic, but a lot of it is from genetics.

by sheehan on Nov 16, 2011 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

I think this is the experience that most fans will have with the opposing fans sites.

It’s no worse or better than any other rivalry. I saw the trolls come in to our site and can’t say I blame Mr. Gates or Eric for any actions they took. I’m not aware of every issue they saw but I noticed enough childish trolling and stupidity that appeared to mostly stem from here (sadly) to feel that any banning was probably well justified.

There’s good fun rivalry and good-natured joking and teasing and then there was the trolling I saw during that game AND in the previous game’s thread, too (between our Vikes and the Packers). :(

Unfortunately the behavior of many Packer fans (particularly in Minnesota) has sort of tarnished your team’s fans’ image among opponents. You can only deal with so much elitism before it starts to wear thin. I imagine that leads to far less patience when it comes to managing a site like this.

by Wytefang on Nov 17, 2011 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

No, that is not my experience with any other sites.

and I’ve hopped around to a lot of different ones. Hell, I spent some time on the Eagles site before they found out what a fraud that team was. Not much - it's all anecdotal, really.

In the circles I’m in presently (here on a Navy Base in the Middle East – Bahrain), I rub shoulders with a decent variety of NFC North fans and/or NFL fans. While some are surely just jealous at the Packers’ current successes, I feel that most are fairly good barometers of public opinion. Most seem to find Packer fans a bit too elitist/arrogant, in general.

Whether that’s fair or not is honestly hard to prove (anecdotal evidence being what it is) but I hear FAR less griping about Vikings fans overall. I suppose if you want to poke fun you could easily say that’s because you have to actually BE someone before anyone pays much attention to you. LOL

Either way, good luck to you folks and I hope we can get some games back from your team next year! SKOL VIKINGS!!

Perhaps

Green Bay’s success has made us a bit cockier. I have an old friend who lives out in LA, and he touts the Packers success. His roommate is an Atlanta Falcons fan, so I think my friend brings up the playoffs last year pretty often.

I will say that real life vs. SBN is different, and that is partly due to Chris Gates. He does a lot of positive things for DN, but he also does a lot of negative things. Sure, he’s your hero because he bans all the trolls, but did you ever stop to think why there are so many trolls to begin with?

I think you're way off in saying that Packer fans will have to

hate on a different fanbase. Don’t get me wrong, none of us like the Bears, but at least with the Bears there is a respect there, as the Bears are a franchise of the same vintage as Green Bay and have won championships in their history.

The Vikings don’t have the history of either the Bears or Packers and certainly don’t have the championships, but Viking fans chirp like their team belongs in the same conversation. I don’t know if Packer fans would ever “hate” another fanbase as much as they hate Viking fans.

As a personal example, I’ll say this. I’m a much bigger of college football than I am of the NFL. I’m a bigger fan of the Hawks and follow them much close than I do the Packers. Living in Iowa, that makes a good bit of sense, as the majority of most teams fanbases are local. That being said…..there is NOTHING – and I mean NOTHING in sports that I enjoy more than the Green Bay Packers kicking the shit out of the Vikings.

Watching the Cubs piss it away for 31 years.

So we as fans have to earn your respect by having our team win a championship?

Pfft.

Football teams are football teams. They all play on the same fields, using the same rules, and fight the same battles. To say one team deserves more respect that the other because it has won championships in the past is just plain silly. Yes, it is nice to win championships, yes I am sure it feels great. But to belittle another fan base just because their team has yet to win is akin to standing over a child who has just dropped his ice cream cone going “Nyah-nyah-ne-nyah-nah, you dropped your ice cream”.

We as Vikings fans have had to endure the worst, 50 years of no championships yet we still maintain loyalty to our team. That has to count for something.

And if you truly believe that if the Rams join the NFC north that your fans will not hate on them, then you are delusional.

Rams vs. Vikings
And if you truly believe that if the Rams join the NFC north that your fans will not hate on them, then you are delusional.

I think it would be a change in the dynamics of the division. Whereas now, GB sort of has a dual-rivalry with fierce border battles with Min & Chi, if the switch would happen, then the Bears would have the two main border battles. There’s already Cubs-Cardinals & to a lesser extent Blackhawks-Blues.

The Cle/LA Rams were in the same division as Lions/Packers/Bears from ‘37-’66, so there’s some history there. The Packers have only played the Rams 10 fewer games than the Vikings. I do think there would be more hate towards the Rams than there is now, but they wouldn’t get as much hate as the Lions or Vikings now.

Right, there is some history from back in the AFL days...

But that rivalry would not be as much fun.

The thing that makes the Vikings-Packers rivalry so much fun is our proximity to each other. I can drive 2 miles and be in Wisconsin, which I often do on Sundays when our Liquor stores are closed.

There are plenty of Sconnies that work in my office, and we have a lot of fun going back and forth as fans of both teams. That kind of dynamic simply does not happen when you are separated by 500 miles.

I find myself wondering if you saw the point when it went by.

I’m guessing not.

Why would Packer fans hate on Rams fans? I don’t think Packer fans “hate” any other fanbase in the division. We respect the Bears – their team has some history, and while intense the banter (at least to me) seems to be respectful). The Lions haven’t been relevant at any point in my lifetime, so Packer fans have no reason to hate them. Their team has never won anything and their fans don’t go around acting like they have. In other words, Lion fans are the exact opposite of Viking fans.

When I saw the first general ban last night I checked to see if I was banned myself. I think I have a good rep over there, but I also know I have clashed with Gates once or twice and have dumped on the Vikings here on occasion as well, and so I would of been pissed if I was caught in the general ban.

However, I guess I don’t see how a huge bitch session about the incident helps change minds or mend fences. It convinces those that already hates us how terrible we are and it convinces us that those comments are irrational and jerkish. The end result is just that the problem becomes intensified instead of resolved.

To be fair...

Actually, he did make the threat. But he did it during the immediate aftermath of the game and from what I can piece together he played the biggest part in the subsequent un-bannings.

I respect Ted greatly and have always enjoyed his writing – he’s VERY good at it. My tenure at APC has been about a year and in that time I don’t think we’ve ever had any beef with Ted. Everybody seems to respect him and we’re certainly not going to hold one comment in the emotional heat of a divisional loss against him.

We’re 9-0 and they’re 2-7. Chris is unhappy, but that’s nothing new. He’d be unhappy if the situations were reversed. Is this pic visible to anyone?

Well, for anyone else who cannot see the picture, I shall be forced to describe it in painful detail: It is a classic 21st century meme poster with a black border. The caption reads “AWKWARD BONER” in a large typeface and “WAIT, WHAT?” in a rather small typeface. The photograph depicts a somewhat heavyset woman from the neck down. She appears to be at some sort of party-like gathering. You can tell the individual is a woman because she has breasts (although they are rather unshapely). She also happens to be wearing a skirt. And, for some unknown reason there appears to be what looks to my naked eye to be a relatively small, erect penis protruding underneath her skirt. Trust me, at least 1% of the users would have ellohelled their asses off.

So, while realizing that this thread has essentially turned into another "open thread"...

… can I ask why it is anyone at APC cares enough about the DN to write this letter at all? I’m not sure why it matters. A couple of years ago when the Vikings were winning, some Vikings fans showed up over here in droves making asses of themselves, but most of the people at the DN never posted here at all.

Now that the Packers are winning, some Packer fans showed up over there and made asses out of themselves.

Shit happens. Gates handles it differently than Brandon does: he drops the banhammer and defends Vikings fans on his site for Vikings fans. Brandon takes a hands off approach. While I have my preference between the two and I haven’t hidden it, I don’t understand why it is that people at APC who thinks Gates and the DN suck need to talk about that (pretty much ad nauseum) at a Packers site.

Honestly, I just don’t get this site at all.

"fortunate, but also lucky"

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 17, 2011 5:24 PM CST reply actions

I don't think Gates and the DN suck

As a frequent reader of the DN, I take exception when Chris writes inflammatory shit about the Packers, Packer fans, and members of APC. His conspiracy theories go beyond trash talk and he influences some DN members to the point of making it a less than enjoyable experience for a Packer fan to be part of their community.

But I have to ask, why the hell do you care why anyone here cares? Are you really attempting to satisfy your curiosity, or are you trying to make the members of this community feel like idiots?

by Ben T on Nov 17, 2011 5:41 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Mostly I'm just curious.

If that makes anyone over here feel like an idiot, well, I don’t see that as my problem. But I suppose you don’t believe either of those things. To each his own (which as it happens is kind of my point.)

I see you over at the DN too and I see that you regularly engage in productive conversations there. From what I can tell, you generally try to engage the DN members who are open to talking to a fan of another team, which seems like a pretty reasonable approach to me. I’m actually not on the football SBN sites all that often relative to the baseball sites, but I do go to the DN for the same reason you do, I suspect. It’s certainly true that Gates writes inflammatory stuff. I don’t deny it, and I don’t really enjoy it when he does, particularly when that vitriol is directed at the Packers, since I’ve loved the Packers for almost 40 years.

But it’s still a Viking site, and I don’t think it’s all that shocking that there would be some anti-Packer vitriol on a Viking site. Knowing that, and knowing I don’t really enjoy reading articles crapping on my team, I stay away from the DN in the days before and for a couple of days immediately after, and when I see stuff that Chris writes about the Packers, I generally don’t read it, or at most I give it a skim to see if it’s worth delving into further. It keeps me calmer, and I still get to enjoy some pretty compelling writing about the football, which the DN in general (and yes, Chris too) turns out on a fairly regular basis.

I suppose I haven’t always felt that way. That’s a fair criticism. Those interested in doing so can probably find me venting my spleen about Gates here before I had a change of heart about things several months ago. Maybe it’s a “zeal of the converted” sort of thing.

I guess in the end I just think that in a year where the Packers are playing the way they’re playing, Packers fans should have better things to talk about than the way a Vikings site is run.

"fortunate, but also lucky"

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 17, 2011 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

I agree wholeheartedly about the writing at DN

The only reason I asked if you were trying to make members of this community feel like idiots is your last line: “Honestly, I just don’t get this site at all.” Of course, you do get the site — what you are really talking about is the people. In my experience, when I tell someone I don’t get them, it’s meant as an insult. Still not your problem, but your intent seems clear.

I think when any team plays this well, oddly enough there seems to be less to talk about between the fans.

by Ben T on Nov 17, 2011 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Packers fans should have better things to talk about than the way a Vikings site is run.

Fair criticism.

I’m a Packer fan, yes I am. Have been since 75 and will always be one. I’ve stayed away from the site (for the most part) by choice, because I got tired of arguing with the same people all the time. I get weak when I see thread like this, because I just don’t get all the DN/Gates hate anymore.

But yeah, it’s hypocritical. I’ll admit that.

I second the motion

And I have a feeling I know who you’re talking about when it comes to arguing. I used to say “just avoid him” but you can’t because he won’t avoid you.

I don’t have an answer on how to avoid him, but I have learned to just laugh. The more riled up he gets, the funnier it becomes. He won’t answer your questions, he changes subject/argument, makes straw man (identity hint not intended but not avoided) arguments, gloats, acts like a child, and when cornered just repeats what’s already been said or drops out altogether. And he usually just reiterates what he reads elsewhere, so it’s frustrating that he so rarely has an original thought . . . but that’s what I’ve learned to love, or at least tolerate.

-Leave the Packer vitrol to the comments but when it makes it into articles it seems like pretty weak writing. Doesn’t take a great writer to spew hatred and bash on people that he clearly doesn’t know. I find it ironic when people from MN bash on people from WI when honestly they are almost impossible to tell apart if you put them next to each other…same goofy ooh sound on their O’s, small town people are the same in both states, big city people are pretty similar. The demographics compare closely, the state geographies are about the same…its just ridiculous. Those are usually the only times I jump in these days, since I’ve lived for over decade in each state.
