Ben Jones

Hey everyone, I was just scanning the draft boards across the web and I noticed that mynfldraft.com has the Packers selecting Ben Jones, a center from Georgia, with the last choice in the 2nd round. I do agree that the center position is a need, but at the same time they could take some in a later rounds and develop him while they get a couple of more years out of Scott Wells. What do you all think? Is Ben Jones a good fit for the Packers?

draft picks

I personally don’t think that’d be a bad idea. The way I think they should draft is as follows:
1st rd: OLB for opposite Claymaker
2nd rd: C to develop behind wells
3rd rd: DT/DE for DL depth (2nd &3rd rd picks could be switched)
4th rd: RB to replace Grant with
5th rd: another OLB
6th & 7th rds: A K & P to compete with Crosby and Mathsay. Although maybe with Crosby’s performance this season instead of a kicker maybe a FS in case Collins has to retire.

They need to go free safety in the one of the first 3 rounds. They have a good punter and a good kicker. Don’t need to spend draft choices on them.

I would like to see a Sproles type guy to fill Grant’s spot. LaMichael James or Jeff Demps maybe if they are around in the late 3rd or 4th

You and me both man! I’ve been calling for that for a couple of years now. I think we might finally have that type of player in Green though. His straight speed might not be blazing but he seems really shifty and quick.

Imagine this team with a crazy receiving RB like Sproles…how exciting would that be!

That's what Alex Green was drafted for!

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Well then someone needs to hand them a Saints game tape so they can see what they need to do for next year! :-)

Demps...

Completely redundant! Already have Cobb, we don’t need another KR/PR and #4 WR! Makes no sense!

I thought Crosby was below average though? Wasn’t that big discussion earlier this year? :-)

In that draft

You would get your wish… Their 1st rd pick is Vinny Curry, OLB/DE from Marshall.

Not that I'm aware of...

But who knows. Nothing about it on CBS and they usually include things like that.

BTW

CBS has Curry rated at 78 overall and Jones at #71. If those rating are close, Thompson might be interested in the 2nd but definitely not the 1st.

Hmm just read on JSOnline that Wells is wanting to be paid like a top 5 C. At 31, I don’t know if that’d be a smart thing to do. The top guy Kalil of the Panthers makes $8.186M a year, and the 5th guy, Baas of the Giants makes $5.5M a year. Another thing that’s interesting is that when the top 5 C signed their contracts, they were all between 25-29 (one was 25, two were 26, and one was 27). Would it be worth it to pay Wells between $5-$8M a year?

Something else that’s interesting is that Raiola of the Lions signed a four year extension when he was 30 averaging $5M a year. Saturday signed a three year deal averaging $4.33 when he was 33, and Birk signed a three year deal averaging $4M when he was 32. I wonder if we’d be able to talk him into signing something like Raiola, Birk, or Saturday did.

The article also talks about Finley’s extension a bit.

Does anyone know what the cap situation is?

I thought I had seen before the season that they were pretty tight on cap space so I’m just curious how much room is available for next year and beyond. Especially since Rodgers is probably going to get an extension in the year or so.

Wells has ALOT of leverage...

The Packers have no viable alternative for Wells at the moment. EDS would scare the hell outta me at Center in front of Rodgers. Course I used to think that of Wells too… But in this case Wells really has the leverage! They had hoped the McDonald would come on this year to become a viable Center of the future, but his poor play in preseason and training camp ended that idea. Personally, I would go after Konz from Wisconsin late in the 1st if I’m drafting a Center. Konz has been rated about #30 overall by CBS prospect ratings. I don’t relish the idea of paying Wells a 5M+ salary, but it might be the best thing to do at the moment. This is kinda like Grant when he held out, cuz Wells has alot of leverage and he aint gonna come cheap. Raiola is probably the closest comparison for Wells as far as age and importance.

Like I said, if drafting a Center go for Konz, if he is outta reach then gotta get one in the 2nd.

I think I’d be alright with around $5M a year. I just don’t know if it’s worth paying him more than that. Though, C’s can usually play into their mid 30’s so maybe it is. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

What he doesn’t have going for him though is the GM who historically doesn’t give big contracts to 30 something Olinemen looking for Top 5 money.

Clifton and Tauscher

Both got 3 and 3 yr deals respectively at about 34 yrs old… Centers can usually play well into the early/mid 30’s, and Wells has no injury history to speak of unlike Cliffy and Tausch. I can see THompson doin a 3 or 4 yr contract. And we still don’t have a decent backup plan like was the case w/ Cliffy and Tausch. I would be surprised if he didn’t re-sign Wells. I don’t know if Wells is worth top 5 Center money, but probably close.

I am just trying to figure out how to put the box quotes in…
