Jarrett Bush
Hey everyone, since this is a short week I'm going to go ahead and get this weeks poll up and running right now. This week, lets discuss a "long time" Packer reserve, Jarrett Bush. He has been around for six years, although it seems as if he has been here a whole lot longer. He has worked very hard and I think they have squeezed every last inch of skill and ability out of him that they can. However, in this pass happy league you need cover corners, and lots of them. They have two great long term options in Williams and Shields. However, Woodson is not getting any younger and the drop off from Shields to Bush is very noticeable. The Packers are in all likelihood going to spend a a draft choice on a corner. Patrick Lee is younger than Bush and Devon House is very young so this means that Bush could be the odd man out. So, should the Packers bring back Jarrett Bush next season?

Bush
I voted to bring him back. He has made strides this years compared to years in the past. I’m impressed with his improvement and development. Not saying he’s a really good CB, but he is getting better. Considering his value on Special Teams, I think it’s best if we resign Jarrett Bush. We also have to recognize that Pat Lee has not developed the way we hoped. There’s a chance that Charles Woodson could be our Safety next year if Nick Collins injury is career ending, so it may be best to hold onto Bush for CB depth. Regardless though, we should probably draft a CB in the next draft.

So your saying the Packers should dump Patrick Lee? I could agree with that.

The thing about Bush
I’m starting to think that there isn’t that much of a drop off between Bush and Shields at this point. Shields has taken a bit of a step back and his probably in technique are starting to show. Bush, while not great in coverage, isn’t that bad any more and is a pretty good blitzer. Right now I’m just as fine with Bush on the field as any of our other deep reserve secondary guys like Shields or Peprah or looks lost in coverage at least a few times every week.

Agree. I have hardly seen any of those plays where Bush is lost in coverage this year – maybe 1-2 toward the beginning of the year. He has gotten much better. And he is a good tackler, and he’s always the first one downfield on punt and kick off cover teams.
Shields is not looking like a long term replacement for Woodson as a starting CB this year. It seems like he’s missed OTAs and a full camp more than other guy on the team.
Anyone who thinks...
They can find a better #4 CB and #1 ST ace let me know… I’ll gladly keep Bush for 2M or so… Not even a question about it! Bring him back!!

This isn’t about special teams play. This is about the fact that this is turning into a passing league. The more cover corners a team has, the better off they will be. I am saying they cut him and spend a draft choice within the first couple of rounds on a corner.
They Might just draft a CB high...
That Won’t mean the end of Jarrett Bush as a Packer! They just used a 4th on House who has the potential to be a very good cover CB, but Bush is still here isn’t he? And if Bush isn’t here as a CB, he would make a better #4 Safety and ST ace than Jennings! Get over your Bush hatred, my guess is he gets another contract for the Packers and is here for another couple of years! IMO, his best position IS Safety anyway!

Of course it's about special teams play.
Yardage and points from special teams count just as much as they do from offense.

There's this guy called Hester....you know he's in our division
There’s also this guy called Harvin. He’s in our division too.
See both of these guys are good at returning punts and kicks….and well, I don’t know about you, but whenever I watch a game and I see Mr. Harvin or Mr. Hester return one of these kicks it tends to turn the momentum of the game. If we are going against these guys we need guys who are able to make plays on special teams in order to help neutralize them. So I don’t think discounting Bush’s special teams ability is a good idea when looking at his viability for making the final 53.
That said, he’s really not that much of a liability in coverage anymore. He’s flexible with his position, a good blitzer and not terribly expensive. So I don’t know why the Packers would be in a big hurry to let him go.

Sadly,
we seem to give up long KRs and ST plays WITH Bush in the lineup.
Would you say the best player on a terrible unit is going to get respect?

Echos from the past
Some long returns happen, sure, but not as often as they used to. Overall I’ve been pleasantly surprised by our special teams units this year. Also consider that last year in the final two meetings between these teams Bush was a key part of a special teams unit that shut down Hester totally. Masthay typically gets the credit, and rightfully so since he had a great day kicking the ball, but it was typically Bush down there downing the ball at the one on each of the highlights we think of from those games.

It has to factor in Special Teams contributions
Because the #4 and sometimes the #3 CB HAVE to contribute on Special Teams. Where else do you think our Special Teamers come from? Therefore, Bush’s role on ST is indeed a huge aspect of whether he stays or not. Lets keep in mind that both Pat Lee and Davon House are currently behind him on the depth chart and contribute less on Special Teams. Is your preference to cut Bush over Lee and House? I like House’s potential, but until I see him play, that’s all he has. I will gladly keep Bush as the #4 CB disregarding his ST contributions anyways, based solely upon his progression alone.

Bush has a very, very good chance at being a Pro Bolwer this year
If you accept that he will never be a dominant defensive player, you might be able to notice that he is definitely our best player on special teams, and one of the best in the league. He is always around the ball, he is the first one in position to put a hit on the return man or track down a punt before it rolls into the end zone for a touchback.
We can all agree that Masthay has been a very strong punter for us, and Bush is a HUGE part of that. We can all agree that our kick/punt coverage needs work, but check out the stat column sometime with regard to the number of tackles Bush has. Rarely are those coming from defense.
If we need a back up CB, that can come from the draft, and most of the time, the guy you get will be good enough, even from the later rounds. What won’t come nearly as often, and is a hell of a lot less reliable is a guy who is consistent and solid on special teams, and especially on this team as it stands right now, bush is a guy we cannot afford to be without.

He's finishing a 3 yr/ 4/4.5M contract...
No reason I can see not to give him a 3 yr 6M contract to bring him back!

Not sure we could get him that cheap

Bush?
I think he would take a 2M per yr contract from the Packers. Just my guess…

he find find anyone offering much more than that.

Edit
Forgot to put the reason he has such a good shot at being a Pro Bowler(see, I can spell!). He’d go as a special teams specialist.

I don’t think it’s right to say that the coaches “have squeezed every last inch of skill and ability out of him that they can.” Bush just started figuring out how to play corner late last year. He’s gonna’ get better yet. He’s already shown work ethic, and once the light went on for him… I would actually say that the sky became the limit for him.
Mark my words, barring injury, Jarrett Bush will be a star defensive back one day.
Mark my words...
Not a chance Bush becomes a star DB…. Ever! Never be more than a career backup and ST ace.

Are we talking about THE Jarrett Bush???
You know, the one on the Packers. He’s made 1 good play as a Packer, his int in the Super Bowl. You don’t pay 2-3mil a year on a gunner for punts. Yeah he’s usually the first or second one down…but…he’s a gunner, that’s what they do. I wouldn’t have a problem keeping him around if he was one of the first ones down there AND ACTUALLY MADE A TACKLE. He’s also terrible at finding and downing the ball inside the 10. He’s such a liability at corner, i’d rather see Driver be our dime guy. I will celebrate the day the Packers finally come to their senses and cut this guy. Did you see how well Tramon played again Calvin Johnson? Did you see what happened as soon as they put Bush on him? Burnt to a crisp for a couple first downs then sure enough, TD. DO NOT RESIGN THIS JOKE.
You're going to call him out for getting burnt by Calvin Fucking Johnson?
He’s a reserve cornerback, and he does better than a lot of other reserve corners around the league. I’m sorry if we don’t have Woodson, Asomugha, Tramon, and Revis. And he’s pretty damn good at downing the ball by the goal line, and he tackles pretty damned well. On both special teams and in pass coverage, people don’t break his tackles, and they don’t get much in terms of yardage once they have the ball. He’s not the best coverage CB, but the dude is a very strong tackler.
I get that you’re new, and welcome to the site, but making abrasive, ill-informed comments like that and your Tight End post in another thread isn’t the best way to start off here.

Yes sorry I have a life working with a D1 college football team and haven't posted 11846 comments
First off, my point wasn’t that Bush SHOULD have stopped Johnson, its that he DIDN’T stop him, meaning he did worse than Tramon (and MB in some zone). Just using that as an example that i don’t think he’s a good CB. How does he do better than other reserve corners? I’m pretty sure the reason he has a decent number of tackles is because he lets receivers catch the ball. I don’t live in Wisconsin anymore so I don’t get all the Packers’ games but the ones I have seen Bush hasn’t done much on special teams either. I really don’t know why this second coming of Ahmad Carroll has such a following. I’d rather they use the roster spot and cap room to develop a younger player since Bush has shown he’s not a reliable corner.
Charles Woodson has a lot of tackles too.
I suppose that makes him an unreliable corner? Or could it be chalked up to the fact that he plays a hybrid position. You know who else does that? Jarrett Bush, most of the time he’s on the field. He’s a blitzing cornerback, who also gets spot-duty at safety, and as we’ve talked about, gets a fair number of tackles on special teams. Besides, as the 4th cornerback, he’s allowed to let the receiver catch the ball. It’s not his job to not give up plays ever, it’s his job to not give up big plays most of the time. You say you work for a D1 football program? Are you a file clerk? Otherwise, you probably ought to know the value of a special teams ace, and a player who offers useable depth at multiple position, and in multiple packages.
By the way, taking shots at my comment count doesn’t change the validity of my statement. In fact, all it does is make you look like you’re making excuses for being less knowledgeable on the subject. I’m sorry that I work hard to have the free time to watch the games, and to comment on here. Just because you don’t doesn’t make it my fault.

And just for comparison
Bush has 19 tackles, 4 passes defensed, 1 interception, 1.5 sacks. (only defensive, not special teams)
Shields has 32 tackles, 7 passes defensed, 2 interceptions, 0 sacks.
Woodson has 49 tackles, 13 passes defensed, 6 interceptions, 2 sacks.
Williams has 40 tackles, 15 passes defensed, 4 interceptions, 0 sacks.
Make what you will of those stats, but I think they’re at least worth looking at. And don’t forget to compensate for playing time.
