Jay Cutler broken thumb-

The Bears confirmed that Jay Cutler has a fracture on his right(throwing hand) thumb.  Original reports had him out 6-8 weeks, but the Bears are now saying that the outlook is uncertain.  Surgery apparently is an option.

Tough break for our rivals.  I really hate to see any important player go down to injury.  I would rather see the Packers beat anyone at full strength than see them have any excuses.

Caleb Hanie, whom you will remember for the NFC Championship touchdown pass to BJ Raji now takes the reigns.  I had thought the Bears were a lock for the playoffs until this, now I'm not so sure..

Thoughts?

Devastating blow for the Bears. He looked great yesterday too, one of his best games as a Bear. The Bears could still make the playoffs but they aren’t nearly the threat they once were.

The Bears passing game has been statistically bad with Cutler

now the question is, is it going to be worse than that awful passing show over in Minnesota with Mr. Redzone Interception?

He might not be a top 10 QB but he’s still much better than the backups on MOST teams (with a few exceptions).

Yet at the same time,

people were so ready to annoint him nationally as an elite QB. Or maybe I know too many Bears fans. I don’t quite get it. Minus the dink and dunk passes to forte, the pathetic wr screens to hester that he somehow breaks for big plays, and the prayers that somehow get caught, he’d be like 20th in the league. his comp % is in the 50’s and he’s right in the middle in QB rating. Even with cutler, they’re not good. Now if Forte got hurt, forget about their season. all over.

The Bears haven't had a really good passing game in 20 years

But their D is what makes them contenders. If it was Urlacher that went down or Briggs or Peppers, then I’d say stick a fork in them. I have a feeling Hanie won’t be as good as Cutler looked the last couple games, but he’ll do okay.

The Bears D isn't as good as in years past

They still have solid D, but they’re not good enough to (almost) win the Super Bowl with a Grossman level QB. Without a decent QB, they are in trouble…

Watching yesterday's game..

Looked like Chicago actually had a pedestrian passing game instead of a non-existent one. Bennett helps them and Williams was off the milk carton. Just when it looked like they were starting to jell, Cutler goes down. I know it was against the Chargers, but still..

It all revolves around Forte.

Take him out of the equation and really they don’t have anything. Sure they have the occasional Earl Bennett pass, and there is always the problem with Devin Hester, but Forte IS their offense. Even with Hanie in, as long as he can get it to him they are still a threat.

by stratefaced on Nov 21, 2011 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

Apparently, he suffered the break trying to tackle Antoine Cason

After Cason picked him off deep in Chargers territory. He only passed twice more after that, both short for completions.

I don't think this will really be as bad as people think...

The offense will suffer, but the Bear’s defense is still pretty solid. The Bears go to the run game more, and keep that defense rested. The only one that should be miffed is Martz. He can’t pretend his offense is the Rams anymore. The Bears will run more (good) and live on a short passing game (probably better – less chance for TO).

That dog just won't hunt.

Agreed on all points.

Hanie will be ok in a short-pass, mistake-minimizing offense that leans heavily on the run.

Though I hate seeing Cutler go down. I really did want Detroit and Chicago to get the wildcards so we could dispatch them both in the playoffs. Now I’ll have to listen to a full offseason of ‘the only reason the Bears didn’t beat the Packers in the playoffs is because Cutler wasn’t there to get them to the playoffs."

Then again, if Rodgers went down, I’d probably be saying the same things. Staying healthy is an under appreciated skill.

I wonder if Forte is even MORE involved now…can he get back above the 50% of plays mark again?

I would hope so.

Forte needs to get a lot of touches. The question should be whether or not the Bears can win games that are 17-10, 20-17, etc.

I'm on the fence

The Bears offense could go from adequate to bad. Hanie’s got to avoid turnovers (something he didn’t do in the NFC Championship game). If he’s throwing pick-6s then it’ll be a disaster.

Luckily for Hanie, he’s facing a collection of bad pass defenses in the final six games. The best one he’ll face, depending on your point of view, is either the Packers (seriously) or the Seahawks.

But I’m still thinking they’ll give Bulger a call. Not to start, but they can’t be left with only Enderle on the bench.

according to NFL Network, Bulger and Warner are both happily retired and not interested.

Favre to Chicago…there is something that might appeal to the QB. haha I think he’s in mend it up with GB mode though so I don’t think he’s coming back.

Forte makes that Offense go, but Cutler is still the QB.

And the QB is the most important in the NFL/sports. Its gonna hurt that offense as much as w/o Forte. I just don’t think that it’ll be a good offense anymore. Teams will get a book on Hanie somthing the Packers didn’t have last year. He might play OK for a game or 2 but it will go downhill quickly. The bears playoff hopes took a big hit. EVery other aspect will have to play better to make up the difference and I don’t know if they can raise the level of play across the board enough! Might be lucky to finish w/ 10 wins now…

That’s a shame. I’m almost definitely in the minority here but I don’t mind Cutler and think he’s a much better QB than most give him credit for — especially when Martz isn’t calling games like a dumbass. This is a pretty big blow for them. It probably kills their playoff chances, which is a shame because I was hoping they’d make it over Detroit — don’t see that happening now.

I'll join you on this one.

Cutler is a decent QB and a tough sob. He’s spent most of his career getting beaten to a pulp and then getting back up for another shot (like AR’s first couple of years, but longer). I also thought they’d edge out the Lions, but that’ll be a tough row now.

by bob47 on Nov 22, 2011 2:16 AM CST up reply actions

Thirded.

I kinda like Cutler, actually, even though he is a Bear. Plus, he plays with diabetes, so I give him a lot of credit for that.

the rest of the season.

This week is their second hardest game – @ Oakland. Given Hanie’s first foray as the starter, I think this will be marked down as a loss. 7-4
vs Kansas City – Hanie, Hester, hell, even Urlacher could be QBing and they’ll win. 8-4
@ Denver – Tough Call here. Denver’s defense is good, and playing in mile high will be tough. I think this is a loss. 8-5
vs Seattle – If it was @ Seattle, I think they lose this game. It’s in Chicago, so they win. 9-5
@ Green Bay – All depends on if GB has HFA locked up. If we give them the best we got, no chance that they can win. 9-6
@ Minnesota – this is where the season ends or continues. They’ve got a ton of tiebreakers. If they win this they’re in. If not, who knows. I think 10 wins gets you in…

by Nels Winkler on Nov 22, 2011 12:00 AM CST reply actions

I agree but I see them pulling out a win in Denver.

Their D will get multiple turnovers from Tebow.
If Cutler makes it back by the playoffs they are still contenders.

You mean the Tebow that has 1 INT all season? Hard to get Tebow to turn it over when he doesn’t pass!
