Chad Clifton
I appreciate all of the comments and votes for my first three polls and I also understand that the last two names i threw out there were not exactly the most notable but they still needed to be discussed. For those of you who have been waiting for some of the more notable names to be brought up your in luck because these names are about to get testy.
This week, lets discuss a long time Packer, Chad Clifton.
I understand how good Clifton is and how the Packers have missed him over the last month or so. At the same time, Newhouse is improving and the Packers spent a 1st round draft choice on Sherrod back in April. But we need to remember that Clifton will be 36 by the time the season starts next year and he has missed a considerable amount of time this season due to injury. So, should the Packers bring back Chad Clifton in 2012?

Maybe- leaning on No
I appreciate what Clifton has done for us over the years, but I would like to move forward with the younger talent we have. Clifton is getting older and slower, whereas Newhouse and Sherrod are both younger and improving. There’s still a long season ahead of us though, so lets see how Newhouse performs the rest of the season and trust the coach’s development of Sherrod in practice. If Newhouse regresses considerably, and the coaches still don’t trust Sherrod, then resign Clifton. It’s still too early to make that decision though…
My wife is gorgeous, but when she wears her pink Rodgers Jersey, she makes you fall to your knees...
It all depends on Clifton
He’s one of the oldest starters in the NFL, and he’s obviously had some injury problems. He might decide to retire. If he doesn’t, I’m sure the Packers will give him a chance to return in 2012, but if he’s not as good as either Newhouse and Sherrod, the Packers won’t just let him keep his starting job because he’s the veteran. They’ve proven performance trumps seniority with decisions made over the past few years in re: to players like Al Harris and Favre.
I voted no
I’m in the minority here, but with drafting Sherrod and Newhouse being decent enough, we don’t need Cliffy on the roster next year given his age, his declining athleticism, and his bad knees. No doubt by the 3rd or 4th round of this coming April’s draft, TT will opt to get a new O-lineman. I appreciate Clifton and all he’s done for us, but his time has come and gone.

No question...
I don’t see much chance Cliffy is back in ‘12… IMO, the real question is should he be the starter when he returns from his injury. I think the Packers are doing well enough on offense and Newhouse is doing well enough to warrant keeping the starting job even when Clifton returns. Cliffy might be slightly better, but the experience Newhouse is gaining is invaluable. As long as Newhouse isn’t hurting the offense, and he doesn’t seem to be, Newhouse should be the starter.
Clifton isn’t going to be the backup next year and I don’t think he would come back to be a backup either. No reason to have him back, when we have 2 young OT w/ loads of potential that need the reps and experience. Save the money and invest it in re-signing Rodgers to a long term contract at about 20M. Clifton has had a great career as a Packer, but its his time after this season to retire. Walk away w/ the 2 most rewarding years in his career w/ 2 SB rings!

Clearly
That is w/ the expectation of the Packers winning another SB this year! Thought that was pretty obvious!

I agree with your optimism

The ride off into the sunset
There are four players who are older and this might be their swan song….Driver, Clifton, Grant, and Woodson. Driver and Grant are each a bit old for their position and as a result are falling down the depth chart to younger, more dynamic players. If the Pack wins the Super Bowl (and especially if they do so in historic fashion) I think these guys move on from the Packers with their head held high for the accomplishment. Driver into retirement and Grant to take a reduced role on a different team.
Woodson seems to have the most in the tank of the three guys. He’s not who he once was, but he still is a better corner than many in the league and can make plays. The move to safety might be coming quicker than expected with his slow down and the injury to Nick Collins. Either way I see him coming back again next year.
Cliffy I see as the most likely to retire though. His body is pretty beaten up, but he’s had a pretty darn good career. He’s set for Packer Hall of Fame honors….maybe even ring of honor as well considering what a stable he’s been to the Packers over his career and the success of the organization over that time. I guess I don’t know what he would get out of coming back other than money. The younger guys at his position would be ready to over take him in a straight competition, and I don’t know the value of coming back and going through camp in order to possibly get cut or ride the pine. Better to ride off into the sunset knowing that you were a key contributor on a team that may go down in history.
Been sayin that all season
Heck even in training camp. Driver and Clifton should retire and they won’t re-sign Grant. Driver is only going to fall farther down the depth chart and Clifton is playing his last season of his career. Woodson will be back for another year, and maybe longer depending on if they move him to safety. Wood can play another year for sure at CB, and if Collins can’t return, he might easily play a couple years at Safety. I’m guessing Wood plays 2 more years total before riding off into Canton!
Isn’t the Ring of Honor reserved for Packers who are in Canton?

No I'm pretty sure there are a few guys who aren't in Canton but are on the ring.

I don't see Driver retiring after this year.
He’s stated before he would like to play until he’s 40 and he seems to be somewhat embracing his reduced role/mentor position. He’s under contract through next year for a pretty reasonable price (about 5 mil) and I have no problem paying that just to keep him in the locker room.
Cliffy I think is released during training camp if he doesn’t retire. I can see him getting beat out for the job and they may just release him to see if he can catch a ride elsewhere for the season as opposed to being a backup. But given his recent injuries, he may be more inclined to just call it a career especially if it ends with another ring.
No way Grant is resigned. He is just too old and there are too many running backs on the roster for them to keep him. He may get picked up elsewhere but I doubt it.
Woodson is signed through 2014, and I don’t see any reason why he can’t be viable until then or beyond. After next season he gets quite a bit cheaper as well so i don’t see that being an issue in the last couple years of the deal. I do see him making the switch to safety at some point though, but I think it really depends on a number of factors including the full extent of Collins’ injury and the improvement of Peprah through the rest of the year. I think they would feel confident in having Williams and Shields as the two primary corners and I think freeing Woodson up to ball hawk in the secondary can only be a good thing.

You think
5M is a reasonable salary for the #4 and next year the likely #5 WR on the team? They no longer need his leadership among the WR, Jennings and Nelson are more than ready for that role. Next year they’ll want to get Cobb more involved in the offense. Just don’t see them keeping Driver to do next to nothing and also losing Gurley in the process. Gurley had been getting props awile back for his play from the DB’s he faces in practice and more importantly the coaches. My guess is the Packers will encourage Driver to retire a Packer or he’ll be on someone elses roster. And Driver has also said that he would retire before playing for another team.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
I don't think 5 mil is too much for Driver...
especially if Clifton’s salary comes off the books, I think they have plenty of cap space to make the other deals they have to make. Driver would still be a solid #2 or #3 on most other teams, but with the production of Jennings and Nelson it looks like he’s been mostly non-productive. He’s still a better possession receiver than Jones and Cobb, so why not keep the five best receivers you have, of which two are great, two are very good, and one is developing. I think that looks better than having two great, one very good, and two developing receivers, even if Driver falls from very good to just good next year. Nobody knows if Gurley is going to be any good, a few years ago everyone thought Swain was going to be next great thing, but how did that work out? I would much rather have the proven commodity at this point than a work in progress.
Packers' Magic Numbers:
Clinch Division = 3
Clinch 1st Rd Bye = 3
Clinch Homefield = 4
You might think he's a #2 or #3...
I doubt that anyone in NFL circles consider him to be that high. Maybe a #3, certainly not a #2, IMO. Either way he is still a #4 and next year a #5 for the Packers and they ain’t gonna pay a #5 WR 5M per year. I also think he’s already fallen from very good to average at this point. Next year Cobb is gonna see a dramatic increase in reps w/ the offense, mostly coming from Driver. Cobb was drafted primarily to takes Drivers role in the offense and is getting some playing time at Drivers expense this year. With a full training camp and offseason, he will only get more involved. Driver isn’t needed for his leadership even this year, so next he certainly won’t be needed for it.
As for Gurley, and for that matter Cobb, its always been the Packers philosophy to develop players and they are very good at it. That much should be obvious at this point. Gurley has gotten the attention of his coaches and teammates in his role on the practice squad playing the opponents. I’m guessing he had a heck of a Megatron impersonation! Swain was never more than a ST player and Gurley has gained a reputation for that as well as his play as a WR, something Swain never really accomplished. What upside does Driver have? None… Gurley on the other hand has loads of it and has put on about 15 lbs and gotten faster w/ an NFL S and C program. They are gonna wanna see if he can develop, while he is playing ST and contrbuting to the offense to a greater degree.
I get all the Driver love, he’s been a great player for the Packers for a decade, but he has no upside left and thats what teams want from a #5 WR along w/ ST play, which is a Gurley specialty! Drivers playing out the string at this point.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
I understand wanting to develop and reset with new players...
but I don’t see where Driver’s play has warranted replacing him. He may be 36, and his numbers have fallen in the last couple years, but that’s more due to the emergence of Jennings and Nelson. I think he’s perfectly suited as a slot receiver, but when you have Jennings and Nelson on the outside, there’s generally not much need for a slot guy. Jones on the other hand, drops way too many balls to be a slot guy and is more suited to be an outside guy. I think they need that slot type receiver in this offense, and I don’t see anybody other than Driver to fill that role. Now if Gurley has improved that much where he needs to take over for Driver, then why is he still on the practice squad? You would think if they thought that high of him that he could’ve found him a spot by now. I mean they have five tight ends on the roster so obviously that fifth tight end is better than their sixth receiver.
Packers' Magic Numbers:
Clinch Division = 3
Clinch 1st Rd Bye = 3
Clinch Homefield = 4
Your right...
Jones is more suited to be an outside guy,so is Gurley for that matter. But the slot is where Cobb is perfectly suited and he is only going to be getting more opportunities for playing time and an increase role in the offense. Gurley is on the practice squad for a couple reasons. Teams at this point in the season, know little of him except for what they saw in the preseason. They will have invested time and money into their own PS players so they’re unlikely to get another teams PS guy and have to start over w/ something they know nothing about. Not too mention that once Driver was on the opening day roster his salary was guarenteed for the year as a fully vested veteran, same w/ Clifton. The Packers arent going to have 6 WR on the roster since Finley is for all intents and purposes a WR anyway, even tho he is lised as a TE. At this point it makes no sense to elevate Gurley to the roster unless there is an injury to a WR to end their season.
Driver can still have a decent game occasionally and even flash a terrific play occasionally, but he doen’t have the legs to play more than a couple plays a game.
BTW, Driver lead the team in drops last year, and this year he is leading too, even in a drastically reduced role!

Chad Clifton
I think Clifton’s maturity and experience add much to the Packers front line, but given Chad’s injury history, he may be the one to end up saying goodbye. He may just be sticking around lately to give the Pack more stability on the line while the young guys get up to snuff on their play.
Once Cliffy was on the roster opening day.
His contract became guareneed this year. And neither Newhouse or Sherrod was ready for the opener this season, IMO. He is on the team this year and his salary is guarenteed this year, so no sence in him leaving or the Packers letting him go. Best used as a reliable vet during the rest of the year, if he’s even healthy, and into the playoffs. He can do alot to help Newhouse down the stretch and in the playoffs.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
My two cents
It was a given that Clifton wouldn’t play 16 games this season, and it’s even less likely he could go 16 next year. TT won’t bring Clifton back next year. Clifton’s been a great Packer and will go into the Packer HOF. Hopefully, he adds another ring this season. I would consider bringing back Clifton with the expressed understanding that he’s the backup at a reduced salary. Don’t know if Clifton could live with that.
Grant will not be back if Greene’s knee heals up. Starks, Green and Saine will be the backfield next season. Grant’s a class guy, but his on-field performance has dropped.
No reason to talk of Woodson’s retirement.
The Packers should offer Driver the same “ambassador” offer they put to Favre a few years ago. Put Driver on a 5 to 7 year contract to make appearances on behalf of the team. There’s no better man for the role. Donald can still make the big play, but he can’t get deep and is dropping a lot of balls. His goal is to play until 40 but there’s no realistic way for that to happen. I think MM and TT will confer with Driver privately this off season if they plan to cut him to give Donald the opportunity to retire, rather than be cut. Keep Driver, an alltime fan favorite, close to the team with a services contract; take advantage of that 1000-watt smile and great personality, keep Driver in the Packer family and get the next unknown, talented “Driver” onto the field next season.
