APC Open Thread #26: Where Florida and Florida State Pretend To Play Offense

Hello, football fans, and welcome to the 24-hour APC Open Thread! Feel free to discuss  Many thanks to Brandon for allowing this silliness.

There are other Open Threads around SBN. Feel free to drop by any of them.

Battle Red Blog, home of the AFC South Eternal Threads. Very welcoming group of people, with quite the mix of ColtsTexans, and the occasional Jags fan. Disgust for the Titans is extremely welcome.

Niners Nation, home of the San Francisco 49ers...

Pride of Detroit Community Open Threads. Division Rivals the Detroit Lions may be, BUT their fanbase is a good group of people. Respect them, and they should respect you.

Bleeding Green Nation's OTs.

A bit new to the game, but still there: Revenge of the Birds OTs

Canal Street Chronicles, getting in on the OT action as well

Rules of the thread:

NO POLITICS

NO RELIGION

NO THREATS

NO NAME-CALLING OTHER POSTERS ON THIS BLOG. There will be other people who stop by this thread. Yes, this is a Packers blog. Please refrain from trolling others, even virulent fans of rival teams. If you want a trash-talk thread (like the one we had in the Super Bowl), I can make one.

Absolutely NO SAYING YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON TO POST

Since we've had a little...issue...with people posting NSFW pictures, please keep in mind that some people might well read this thread at work. If you're going to post a picture that might be considered Not Safe For Work in any way, shape, or form, post a link to it instead of embedding it in the comment. That way, nobody gets in trouble.

Please remember that any time you spend on the APCOT's is entirely voluntaryNobody is forcing you to be here.

If you were one of the people who rec'd the previous open thread to move it to the Recommended FanPosts section, please go back to that previous thread now and un-rec it. That way, the previous thread will move out of that section, and these won't be cluttering APC as much.

With those rules in mind, have fun.

This game was so awful that a QB sneak on 4th and 1 lost 18 yards. As Doctor Saturday summarized:

Florida gained 190 yards of total offense, its worst output in more than 20 years. Not to be undone [sic], Florida State gained exactly 100 yards — a little less than one-quarter of its season average — on an average gain of 1.7 yards per play.

Geico

These Geico commercials with the cavemen are AWFUL…just pure misery on TV. I can’t imagine these things are still rating well with people.

American Idol is the most successful TV show ever.

Never underestimate just how bad the taste of the American public truly is. I bet millions of people think those commercials are the epitome of wit and marketing.

And that explains why shit like, “The New Girl” is still on the air. Seriously, is that “Jessie” girl a fuckin’ alien from a distant galaxy that’s never had any human interaction ever? Because that’s how she comes off.

+1 for Mario actually being in first.

An Open Thread

How quaint. All I have to do is ask my players to rec my Pick ‘Em threads. What are you going to offer if I’m not contributing? Eh, OBSIMH? What do you bring to the table?

Ladies, gentlemen, and others! I offer a $25 Gift Card for the Packers Pro Shop for picking more correctly than anyone else. And this…thread…offers you, well, what exactly? It’s not Aaron Rodgers stats, nor filthy lucre. So what, then? Cats? Boobs? Hilarity? Nay!! Nay, I say! This thread offers you precisely what OBSIMH is willing to offer, which is rules, and tyranny, and oppression. You tell that man where to shove his tyranny, and it’s rolled up like a small tube and directed straight up his bum!

Or, y’know, you could quit whining that better threads have stolen your thunder, bro. Srsly.

I like the Open Threads!

but I think the issue that is being missed here is the amount of recs it takes to get moved up to the recommended reading part. 2 recs? Cereal? I don’t have a problem with the Pick ’em threads, it is just some of the other ones that are there that are kinda meh.

Though you did bring some cereal heat, I think the heat is focused on the wrong parties. I don’t think OBSIMH meant to pick on your thread (Ask A Lion fan still there? WTF?).

That dog just won't hunt.

I think the refs got it wrong, it was clearly a spike to stop the clock. Not that I care.

Did Hanie raise his eyes over his center's ass?

If he did, good call. If not, bad call. And if it’s a bad call, do you seriously think that Hanie would have been up for a TD heave there?

Per the rules...

if you spike to stop the clock you cannot hesitate or act as though you are going to pass. You must spike it right away. You can fake spike, then throw. Just not the other way around. Was a perfect call by the rules.

In Every Climb and Place....

by PhoenicianPakFan on Nov 28, 2011 3:46 AM CST up reply actions

Yup…you can’t fake and then unfake. Clearly he wanted to throw it and therefore he can no longer spike it. IT sucks but imagine if guys could do that all the time and then still spike it…

Holy crap

Coach pulled his starters 1:48 in when they were up 25-0. And then the scrubs went out and racked up another 75 points?

I can see the complaints – 70-0 at the half, you start shooting from the half-court line the moment you get to it and forget about rebounding at all. “No defense” was a good call, but it obviously didn’t stick – how the hell does a team only score 2 in a half against no D?

There must be some way to hurt the team without shutting them down for the season – cancel four home games and mark them as Ls, maybe. Obviously, Pikeville has some serious skills, so they should be able to overcome that, but if they can’t, too bad. Don’t put up a C-Note on fifth-graders next time, dicks.

Montee Ball

How the hell is this guy not the front runner for the heisman? Most people talking about Heisman barely even know who he is…

He’s 5 TDs from one of the most “unbreakable” college FB records and dude doesn’t even get mentioned in most top 5 lists.

As far as e-Spin is concerned, Trent Richardson is the frontrunner for the Heisman.

And Richardson has 12 less TDs than Ball this season and less YPC. Richardson had 37 yards rushing on Kent State for heaven’s sake. Ball’s at least been consistent and is heating up at just the right time.

Trent Richardson is the consesnsus Heisman frontrunner at this point.

I’d love to understand why.

He has 39 fewer rushing yards than Ball, 0.5 fewer yards per carry, 9 fewer rushing TDs, 11 fewer total TDs(because his passing TD doesn’t count for some reason?).

The only thing Richardson has been better with is total yardage, which he leads Ball in by 40.

Oh, you know.

Roommate issues.

He wants ME to move out so he can room with someone else. My immediate answer: “OH HELL NO.”

Roommate arrives in the room about 5 PM, and brings the guy he’d liked to room with next semester in. Cue attempted guilt-trip by the guy my roommate would like to room with (abbreviated as TGMRWL2R) next semester for the next ten minutes. I’m basically accused of being a hard-headed, strong-willed person who’s afraid to move.

Naturally, with my personality, this strategy is not very effective… and TGMRWL2R with leaves the room in a huff with my roommate not too far behind him.

I’m irritated by this entire situation. At best, it was an inconsiderate, ill-conceived plan that was doomed to failure the moment I showed any resistance. At worst, it is the worst joke of all-time.

Don't underestimate the power of roommate issues

I’m not good at rooming with people – never have been. The usual advice is to not room with a friend, since you may end up hating each other afterward. Not in my experience – the times I roomed with a stranger, it was harder to make concessions and feel empathy for their situation. When I roomed with friends, good friends who I wished to keep afterward, compromise was much easier.

CSB: I dropped out of college because I couldn’t convince a buddy to room with me. I had an awesome room (great building and a view of downtown Atlanta), but this guy decided that he’d rather room with a nerd than hang with me, since he thought we’d be shit-faced all the time. Dumb kid mistake, but he stuck to his guns. Because I didn’t want another random roomie (the one I had the year before was a douche), I decided that starting a company was preferable to sleeping in the same room as another random stranger.

We did end up rooming together later, and we’re still great friends. But we both (kinda) still regret that decision to this day. Do what’s best to get you through, and try to avoid the angst. That’s the best advice I can give.

after freshman year, lived with an awesome friend and our wing was basically all people who knew each other. It was a mix of my baseball teammates, fraternity brothers, and femmebots. The RA was an awesome guy (we lived right next to him and NEVER EVER got written up). We had the run of the hall, and it was massive crazy. Our door was always open. We set our dorm up for optimal living space, which lead to like 5+ guys or girls sleeping over each night lol.

I guess my take would be to not give up your room. He can change rooms if he wants. I only had a semester of a roommate I didn’t know, because first semester was on my own (AWESOME) due to the kid not showing up for school or transferring without letting the dorm people know. Next semester I got a guy who totally was not even like me. But it worked. He was an awesome roommate, though he would take off for days on end.

That is all I will say. College is an awesome time.

exactly

people always told me that you shouldn’t live with a friend… my experience is that you should live with a friend, just maybe not a good friend. That way you feel a need to make concessions like you said earlier, but if you end up hating them, it’s not such a big deal.

I’m in my last year of school and have hated all 7 of my roommates except one (never live with girls, never live with your engaged buddy and his fiancee) and that one is the only one that I was a friend when we moved in and now he’s my hetero-life partner. My best advice is to just suck it up and hope for the best next year and as much as you want to just tear into your roommate, for the love of God, don’t until there isn’t much time left in your lease.

My dirty little secret for domestic harmony when living with chix

Separate bathrooms. If there are multiple women, they can share one if they so desire, but always, always, always have a place to which you can escape for 15 minutes of peace. Also, no nagging about how dirty it is, even if “dirty” means “some lint from the freshly-laundered towels hit the floor and you didn’t notice”.

I had a roommate for my first year

And then part of my sophomore year. I lived in an open double for the rest of the college year. Trust me, it was most enjoyable. I had this huge room all to myself.

Junior and senior year, I lived in suite-style rooms. Trust me, get into a suite if you can. That was where I was most comfortable.

I told TGMRWL2R no less than six times that I would not help them.

The fact that I saw 4 different attempts to try to get ME to move left me unfazed.

Strategy One: Bandwagon Approach: “It’s better for the three of us if you move” – well, it sure as hell is inconvenient for ME, and I’m going to be selfish and reject this premise. I’m not that accommodating to people I have never met and I sure as hell am not going to be FORCED into moving in with a total stranger.

Strategy Two: Testimonial: “He’s a great guy, you’ll love living with him” – ORLY? Why do you want to move if that ’s the case?

Strategy Three: Attempt to Appeal to Convenience: “It’s only 20 feet down the hall [I wish] and it’ll only take an hour or two” – It takes 0 seconds for me to remain where I am right now, douche.

Strategy Four: Belittlement: “You’re afraid of change and you’re inconveniencing us. You don’t have an excuse to not move.” – I don’t know who you are and I don’t give a shit. I don’t have an excuse to move. Problem, random douchebag?

But it sounds like the douchenozzle’s not gonna see it that way and now has pride fuckin’ with him. That’s a shitty combo and one that’s best avoided. I would make one more reasonable argument that that’s the way it should go down (“Your idea means that you’re the one who moves. Cool, right?”), but after that, I’d just say fuck it and find better arrangements elsewhere. It would beat the hell out of a semester’s worth of surreptitiously pissing in each other’s coffee mugs.

I would put blame for that loss

at about 25% on officiating on 75% on our poor shooting. UNC took control of the game when the refs went into FU mode in the second half but if we had shot the ball half way decently in the first half we would have had a 15 pt lead at that point.

Didnt you hear?

Green Bay beat up on a weak and depleted Steelers team. Because, you know, we didn’t have like 15 players on IR. And we didn’t lose Driver and Woodson in the SB, and Shields for an extended period of time. I would actually argue Ben beat up on a depleted Packers team. Think about it, the Steelers had nothing going for them on offense until that final drive in the second quarter where both Wood and Shields go out with injuries, and then Ben finally gets that offense moving. Coincidence? Oh yeah, he also blames the turnovers. Because they weren’t forced turnovers or anything. Nope, the Steelers just gave us the ball like they didn’t want it.

Seriously, does Skip ever think about what he is saying? Sometimes he makes excellent conclusions and formulates great arguments. Most of the other times its like what the heck are you smoking, can you really believe that? Quickly followed up by how stupid are you?

The Wisconsin-Marquette game today?

Should have ended in a tie. It should have just ended at regulation, considering how shoddily both teams played down the stretch. Marquette survived their own ineptitude from beyond the arc; Wisconsin did not.

Brust and Berggren both have a sweet stroke from beyond the arc…but that’s very streaky and they combined for 13 missed 3-point shots on 16 attempts. Wrong players taking the three + missing the poorly shot three = Disaster.

Marquette won, yes, but I’m seriously irritated.

Just seemed like a poor game from both teams. I am not glad my two fav teams are playing this shitty at this point. Badgers miss too many shots and try to shoot their way out of it. Marquette is playing sloppy defense and has just some fouls that make you go “doh!”

Because the physics, man, the physics...

The only way this scenario can happen is if Matthieu has INCREDIBLE hand speed to bring the ball across the goal-line and then throw it to the ref.\ in the span of a single second.

Now, I’m pretty sure this is not possible without whipping the ball well out of bounds. There’s no way the ball crossed the goal-line on this play. DEAL WITH IT.

Oklahoma State will be arguing for years that they should have gotten a shot at LSU. And they’ll have more fuel for the fire if Alabama gets squished or humiliated.

Except we’ve seen Alabama play LSU already and I highly, highly doubt they’ll get squished or humiliated. In fact, I wouldn’t be the least bit shocked if they won. Hell, erase that phantom interception or the kicker being horribly inept and they probably beat LSU. I actually thought they looked better than LSU did.

I already watched them play.

Was the most disappointing game of football I’ve watched. LSU deserves to be there, so not going to take away from them. They played like a boss all year.

OSU had the tougher schedule and a better resume than did Alabama. This chart sums it up pretty well.

Sagarin had OSU with the 6th hardest schedule while Alabama played the 23rd. Alabama got to play the soft part of the SEC East too. ;/

Revised Rankings through Week 15 (those are the Week 14 ranks)
Oklahoma State
Kansas State 8
Baylor 12
Oklahoma 14
Texas 24
Missouri Dropped Out of Top 25

Alabama
Arkansas 6
Penn State 22
Auburn 25

To make my own corrections, the author of this chart missed some bowl eligible teams for both teams due to his qualifier of WINNING RECORDS.
Add Florida (6-6), Vanderbilt (6-6), and Mississippi State (6-6) sitting at .500 for Alabama.
Add Iowa State (6-6) and Texas A&M (6-6) for Oklahoma State.

I think this year is an embarrassment for the BCS.

Adding in:

I think VT getting a BCS bid is just flat out stupid and wrong. Michigan too. Boise State should get a chance against Kansas State or Baylor. VT, for some reason, has such a high rank. I don’t see where they are getting it from with their only quality win against GT. The rest of the ACC was totally down. Just doesn’t make sense.

Only the top 14 are eligible for at-large? (in general as there are some exceptions)

1 LSU BCS NCG
2 Alabama BCS NCG
3 Oklahoma State Big 12 Rep for Fiesta
4 Stanford At-large eligible
5 Oregon PAC 12 rep for Rose Bowl
6 Arkansas SEC maxed out
7 Boise State At-large eligible
8 Kansas State At-large eligible
9 South Carolina SEC maxed out
10 Wisconsin B1G rep for Rose Bowl
11 Virginia Tech At-large eligible
12 Baylor At-large eligible
13 Michigan At-large eligible
14 Oklahoma At-large eligible

Clemson is the ACC rep for the Orange Bowl. Sugal Bowl does not have a SEC representative as their are two teams in the NCG, so I believe they could take two At-large bids. The Big East rep is West Virginia.

Hell I could be wrong about the eligibility, but that is as close as I could get.

"most disappointing game of football I've watched"

My first reaction to this statement was: you obviously have not seen any Tim Tebow games this year. Then I remembered, Tim doesn’t exactly play football so much as some bastardized form of rugby.

by Ben T on Dec 5, 2011 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

My comment isn't really true

Tebow’s games have actually been very exciting with all the last minute comeback victories. I am just frustrated because I keep telling my Broncos-loving friends that his brand of football is not sustainable and the Broncos keep going out there and proving me wrong. It’s bullshit, I tell you. I told them, don’t sleep on the Vikings because they have a defense that may be custom-built to stop the Broncos…wtf do I know?

by Ben T on Dec 5, 2011 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

The resume comparison is great and dandy but what I think it comes down to is just looking at who they lost too. Sure, Ok St. played a “better” schedule on paper but doesn’t how all the teams actually look in their games factor into things? Cause I watched Texas play, I watched Kansas St. play, and I watched Missouri play and I don’t think any of them are much better than Auburn or Florida. I personally just don’t feel as though the difference between the two schedules is great enough to say, “Ok, Oklahoma St. deserves to be in the game over Alabama.”

But what most did Ok. St. in, imo, is that the whole country saw Bama’ play LSU, and play them dead even — if not better. I mean, LSU and Alabama literally rolled over everybody they played. And it’s not because the SEC sucked, it’s because the two of them are head and shoulders above everybody else.

I’ll probably get back the “OMGZ that was such a snooze fest game” response, and if anybody really feels that way then I don’t think they’re really real fans of the game. It was a game between two of the best defenses college football has seen in a long, long time. Both of them will probably have more than half of their players on defense drafted in the first four rounds at some point or another.

And to get back to my first sentence — yeah, sorry I ranted a bit — it comes down to the losses both teams had. Oklahoma St. lost to Iowa St. I have a good buddy who plays for Northern Iowa (fcs team) who lost by 1 point to them earlier in the season. They’re a pretty damn mediocre team. Alabama lost to LSU by 3 in OT.

I think the one thing we all can agree on though is that the BCS system needs to go. It’s seriously flawed. I mean, how does Michigan get into the BCS over Michigan St., who beat them pretty handily? How is VT even ranked in the top 10 in the first place? Because they’ve had decent teams in years past, and have a good reputation? What they really need to do is just have a playoff.

Fire Slocum

by packallday555 on Dec 5, 2011 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

I will be short and sweet...

Your first reason is anecdotal and subjective. Those type of arguments get factored in the human side of the BCS. The objective measures are taken in by the computers where it gets rid of human bias. OSU did better there while Alabama did better in the human polls.

It will be a snooze fest, and I don’t think that should take away from my fandom of college football. I think that is a poor way to make a point and try to take away from arguments being made from the opposing side.

The BCS has problems, and I support a playoff. This didn’t use to be the case with me though. As for Michigan and VT, I don’t think they should be in, but that was the Sugar Bowls choice. $$$ > logic. Should have been Boise State and Kansas State as the next top ranked teams. I just don’t see where VT’s rank is coming from as they really played a soft schedule with only one quality win. Michigan State got bounced out of the top 14, which is required to be an at-large. Sucks I know. I don’t understand how a team should be penalized for playing a CCG. There needs to be a lot more work done on the BCS.

That dog just won't hunt.

It will be a snooze fest, and I don’t think that should take away from my fandom of college football. I think that is a poor way to make a point and try to take away from arguments being made from the opposing side.

No, you’re right, it doesn’t take away from your fandom. I probably shouldn’t have said it did but I guess I personally just don’t agree with the notion that the game was, or will be a snooze fest (if it’s low scoring again).

I just think sometimes all low scoring games get put into the “sloppy game” category (which also usually = boring/bad game). I mean, if it’s a game like the Jets-Broncos game, then yeah, I can understand the snooze fest angle. You’ve got two inept QB’s who can’t hit an open receiver to save their lives. While also having their running games totally stifled for the most part.

I didn’t think the LSU-Bama’ game was a bad game. It seemed like both teams could usually put together a drive but then would get stopped as soon as they got into each other’s territory. It just seemed like the defenses stepped up and made the stops when need be.

And I guess it’s hard to look past the fact that a number of the members here who proclaimed the game to be a snooze fest are also tend to be extremely Big Ten biased. I guess is just makes me wonder whether or not they really felt it was a snooze fest, or whether they just really wanted it to be one.

If you care, you don’t seem to be one. And I really appreciate the fact that you were actually willing to make and argument and provide some support for it too. As opposed to just making a bunch of wise cracks.

Fire Slocum

by packallday555 on Dec 6, 2011 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

My reason for snooze fest...

These teams had two weeks to game plan against each other. I don’t really think it was outstanding defense so much as just bland and predictable offense. They had 2 weeks to make sure the offenses could go out there and do something special. I just thought they laid an egg there.

There is still a lot to be said about the subjectivity of the humans after seeing some of the votes in the Harris Poll and the Coach’s Poll as they became available. At least with the computer’s you can analyze the function, inputs and outputs.

I will admit I am bias for the Big Ten. I still try to remain as pragmatic as possible. Just think Alabama had their chance at home, let’s see who else can knock off this monster team of LSU. Each argument has their validity, but I still think there is a lot of unanswered points on both sides that need to be fleshed out.

That dog just won't hunt.

by Wiedmann on Dec 6, 2011 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

That is the cliche...

You may feel that the two best teams are matched up. I don’t think so. LSU is far and away the best team. An argument can be made for either team to be second. I would imagine that the arguments being made by the Oklahoma State supporters could be made by the Alabama supporters if the roles were reversed.

That dog just won't hunt.

by Bush League All Star on Dec 6, 2011 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

If you do admit that "LSU is far and away the best team"

Then wouldn’t your only loss to them be a heck of a better loss than dropping a game in Ames to a 6-6 team?

13.

by Wiedmann on Dec 6, 2011 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

Hey guys - I just thought of something

Now this is weird, so just hear me out. Since there are so many questions over who would match up better, why don’t we give them both an opportunity to do so? Or maybe Stanford? Like, if we had the winner of the Fiesta Bowl meet the winner of the winner of the BCS Championship Game to determine who was really best?

I suppose you’d have to change the name of the BCS Championship Game, though – maybe call it, like, the Sugar Bowl or something and then have the next game be the BCS Championship Game? That might work.

I know it sounds crazy – nothing like this has ever happened before in the wold of college football, but it could settle a lot of these debates. And then if LSU beats ‘Bama by 374 points but beats OK St. by only 372 points, we’ll know that OK St. was better.

What do you think?

Posting pictures of women than talking about anything. I haven’t stopped by there in awhile so it might not be like that anymore but it used to be.

LoL

No not normally….but asking “which one of these, would you bang” can get old after awhile.

And see, I can't help but answer when asked

I can’t see the first one for some reason……but I would have no problem making skin smacking sounds with the second one although i might get lost in her massive a**.

Packers: Working on a dynasty.
Blackhawks: Taking care of business as usual.
Badgers:Back-to-back B1G Champions!
Brewers: Move along, nothin' to see here.

Hmm

98-95 (21 OT), whoever, because by that point I’ll have passed out drunk.

If there were a 21 OT game I think OBSimH would have a heart attack.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Sure,

maybe you’d be able to sleep

Packers? Working on a dynasty.
Blackhawks? Taking care of business as usual.

Brewers, Badgers? THIS IS WHY YOU CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

52-35 Oregon

Hey, I’m torn apart on this game, but I just wanna see the exact opposite of the LSU Alabama game earlier this year.

12-0
Giants? Check.

My feelings too unfortunately :(. I don’t see our defense stopping more than maybe once or twice all game. And while their D isn’t great, they use a lot of formations which seem to result in some stops or turnovers.

Awesome news, everyone!

My good friend Amy Mclendon of Hong Kong just e-mailed regarding a very exciting business venture that could earn me 23.5 MILLION dollars! I can only assume we’re going to be enslaving street orphans and forcing them to hunt whales.

What a coincidence!

A relative in Africa (I’m not African American) has 10 million for me if I can just transfer some money into a US account for him!

I've hit it big! Screw APC!

I say Niners

I am not nearly as scared of a good Niners defense trying to stop our offense as I am of a good Saints offense shredding our defense.

by Ben T on Dec 7, 2011 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not sold on the Niners

Regardless of their record. I think they will lose at least two more games especially now that Patick Willis has hamstring issues.

That is tough...

But if I had to choose, it would be New Orleans. I don’t mean any disrespect (that is one hell of a football team you guys have), but I’d just go with the dome team playing at Lambeau in January.

Oh my.
Amid growing international alarm, Mr Gorbachev said the results of Sunday’s poll should be annulled and new elections held due to “numerous falsifications and rigging.”
“The results do not reflect the will of the people,” Mr Gorbachev, president when the Soviet Union collapsed two decades ago, told the Interfax news agency.
“Therefore I think they (Russia’s leaders) can only take one decision – annul the results of the election and hold new ones.”
