Packers Over Lions: Top Five Defensive Plays Of The Game
It was a good defensive performance in which the Green Bay Packers gave up a lot of yards as usual (409), but didn't allow many points, in part, because they forced three interceptions.
Second Quarter
(11:08) (Shotgun) 9-M.Stafford pass incomplete short left to 28-M.Morris (52-C.Matthews).
I'm going from memory here, but I think this was the play where Clay Matthews jumped up for full extension to swat away the screen pass attempt on third down.
(5:40) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 9-M.Stafford pass short right intended for 87-B.Pettigrew INTERCEPTED by 52-C.Matthews (79-R.Pickett) at DET 20. 52-C.Matthews to DET 13 for 7 yards (87-B.Pettigrew).
A nice tip drill catch by Matthews, but Ryan Pickett ran out into the open field to stick his hand out and tip it in the first place.
Third Quarter
(5:43) (Shotgun) 9-M.Stafford pass short middle intended for 87-B.Pettigrew INTERCEPTED by 49-R.Francois at GB 34. 49-R.Francois to GB 35 for 1 yard (77-G.Cherilus).
Robert Francois dropped back into coverage, and showed Matthews how to jump up for full extension and grab the interception.
(4:56) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 9-M.Stafford pass short right intended for 87-B.Pettigrew INTERCEPTED by 21-C.Woodson at DET 33. 21-C.Woodson to DET 33 for no gain (28-M.Morris).
As if this game needed anymore WOW plays from the defense. Charles Woodson managed to arch himself over Pettigrew's back and steal the pass away from him.
Fourth Quarter
(9:32) (Shotgun) 9-M.Stafford sacked at DET 13 for -3 yards (90-B.Raji).
Because I wanted to include their only recorded sack of the game (two other sacks didn't count because the Packers accepted a penalty instead). Also, it was good to see some activity from DE B.J. Raji. He hadn't recorded a tackle or sack in a couple games prior to Thanksgiving.

Tip to Matthews.
That single-handedly took away the Lions momentum, got the confidence up for our D. Both of the other interceptions were great, though, and the same can be said about Matthews pass breakup of the screen. BJ Raji’s sack was a result of good coverage, and an awful decision by Stafford.
11-0. Hell yeah. HEAR THAT ZUNDAR?

I voted for that one for the same reason
It was a game changing momentum swinger. Not to take anything away from the rest of the damn good defensive plays we had, but prior to that, the game was a stalemate.

I voted for that because
2 players made great efforts. Who knew Pickett could get back into coverage like that?
He actually had a similar tip against San Diego
But yeah, he’s got some athleticism for a 350 pound dude :-P
11-0. Hell yeah. HEAR THAT ZUNDAR?
yup
Woodson’s pick was more impressive, but Matthews’ pick was more crucial

Have to give it to Francois
just because it was such a beautifully athletic play from a guy who gets so little playing time.
Defense Play
Not a scene stealer, but I vote for William’s coverage of Johnson the whole game.
Was Stafford in the shotgun the whole game?
Because all of those plays above came from that formation.
SUPER BOWL CHAMPS
Matthews interception shifted momentum most - but this is "Defensive Play of the Game" - that goes to Woodson
Matthews’ interception put the Packers in good position to score after they had been struggling offensively and definitely changed the trajectory of the game. But it was an easy pick – batted up into the air as a free ball – it wasn’t a spectacular defensive play.
Woodson’s pick was ridiculous. That was a reception for Pettigrew, and Woodson just jumped right over his shoulder and took it away. Fantastic defensive play – when was the last time you saw a guy make a play like that. He was up and horizontally extended going over Pettigrew’s shoulder – crazy good play.

This is my feelings as well
The best play in the game was by Woodson, the key play in the game was the Pickett tip.
13.
When I think "defensive play of the game"
I think of game changers. The INT by Matthews with the assist from Pickett does it there, swung the game in our favor in nice field position, but as far as ESPN type highlight worthy “WTF? How did… I don’t even” type plays, then yeah, C-wood gets that one.

I have to agree here
The Matthews pick meant the most. If Suh wasn’t an idiot that play probably would of separated winning from losing. However, Suh is an idiot and so I have to go with one of the prettiest interceptions you will ever see. C-Wood is a beast!

BJ
I thought BJ played a very good game, from what i remember he was getting good push up the middle on the pass rush.
A little better pass rush than the last few games
Still not quite at last year’s level, though. He’ll get back. Rest BJ up for the playoffs, and we know what he’s capable up… (Cue Raji TD against Chicago Bears…)
11-0. Hell yeah. HEAR THAT ZUNDAR?
i clearly remember yelling at the TV for Raji to tuck the football
he was so lucky that it wasn’t a fumble out of the endzone

Mike Neal effect?

Don't see it yet
I personally have not noticed any difference with Neal being in. That said, I watched the game while rolling around on the floor with my niece and nephew, so I wasn’t able to “watch” the game. What i did see was a lot of time for Stafford to make plays. Has anyone seen a real noticable difference in the line push with Neal in?
Anyway, I voted for Pickett’s tip. Wood is supposed to make those plays, and the Francois interception was a thing of athletic beauty, but Pickett’s tip was unexpected and lead to the first points of a rough first half.
Neal’s been getting get push. I don’t think the quickness that he’s supposed to have has been there but his bull has seemed pretty good.

Was only talking about Neal's effect on Raji,
who benefits from Neal’s presence.

Matthews/Pickett play was the best in terms of game changing...
however I voted for Francois interception because of the sheer athletic ability it took to do, along with the fact it was easily the play of his career. I would’ve voted for Woodson’s interception next.
Good times never seemed so good!
I put Francois....
because I thought the Lions were driving to keep themselves in the game and that amazing play completely took the wind from their sails and allowed GB to put it away.
