10 Most Indispensible Packers

The Packers are well known for their ridiculous depth, built from the steady drafting hand of Ted Thompson. And they seem to be able to pluck free agents off the street and just plug them in. But here are the top 10 players they can't afford to lose and still be able to win a Super Bowl.

1. Aaron Rodgers (no explanation needed)

2. Clay Matthews (he's all the pass rush they have)

3. Greg Jennings (still Packers best WR and Rodgers go-to guy in the slot...see SB)

4. Tramon Williams (although hurt, still the best cover guy as Woodson has lost a step)

5. Scott Wells (best OL, and the glue that holds this unit together)

6. BJ Raji (numbers down with Jenkins gone, but best playmaking DL they have and commands double team)

7. Charles Woodson (may have loast step but still makes plays with veteran savy)

8. Desmond Bishop (has become a playmaking force at MLB, but best attacking the line, not in coverage)

9. Mason Crosby (perfect 15 for 15 this year, and one is starting to believe he'll now make kick with game on line)

10.  Nick Collins (they did lose him so jury's out, but the issues and miscommunication in the backend of the secondary are evident and could cost them at some point if they face a hot offense like NO in the playoffs).

Need to mention another receiver

They survived last season without Finley, but they don’t make it through the Super Bowl without Nelson. I think it can go vice versa (they could survive without Nelson if they have Finley) but they need one of them. Driver’s career is winding down, Cobb’s hasn’t yet gotten started, and Jones is too inconsistent. They need that No. 2 receiver to make it work. Luckily this season they’ve had two dangerous No. 2 quality receivers in Nelson and Finley.

I don't see how Jones has been inconsistent this year

He hasn’t been targeted as much as the other two (or gotten as many snaps), but when he’s been called upon, he’s stepped up to the challenge. It seems like Jordy has dropped more balls this year than Jones. I have as much confidence in Jones as I do in Jordy. Either way, I think Finley is more valuable than both of them.

Finley and Jennings

Are 1 and 1a.. IMO, they can survive w/o one of them, but not both. Nelson is clearly not indispensible. Nelson gets nothing but single coverage cuz Jennings and Finley are the true weapons and draw the coverage. Last year if you put Finley in Nelsons place they do even better. Can do w/o Nelson especially w/ Jennings and Finley. Without both of them Nelson becomes a pretty good #2 WR, but I don’t think you can put Nelson near the level of Finley. Glad we have him and Jones to be the next WR after Jennnings tho. I like having lots of weapons.

I'd say no, but the center is a very important position when it comes to communication of the OL.

And Wells is having a superb season, I’d say that combined with the increased significance of the C in relation to the RG positions, he may possibly be more valuable.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Sitton over Wells

and you should never have a kicker on a list like this. Woodson is old. I’d take Shields over Bishop. Brandon is right about the WR’s as well. If we’re gonna have Rodgers, gotta have the corps too.

Shields over Bishop??

Bishop is the glue of that defense. He is that brawler that lands the haymaker when needed. He creates plays for others when he is not making the plays himself.

Still <3’s for the blackoutsox!

by Bush League All Star on Nov 8, 2011 1:08 AM CST up reply actions

Woodson is old?

He’s not exactly young, but that doesn’t mean he can’t play. In fact, he’s tied (with two other guys) for the league lead in INTs (5), and tied for 5th in passes defensed (13). He’s the only one of the three to also record a sack. For the record, there’s only 4 players who have 3+ INTs & at least one sack, and half of them are on the Packers (Burnett is the other). Burnett is tied for 9th in INTs with 3, and Peprah is tied for 4th with 4. Burnett, Peprah, Shields & Tramon are all tied for 20th in passes defensed (9). So, to recap, our defensive backfield is pretty good.

Jared Allen has to be the front runner!

Jared Allen (13 sacks, 3 FF, 1 INT, 4 passes defensed)
Demarcus Ware (12 sacks 2 FF)
Darrell Revis
Nnamdi Asomguah (he’s been pretty awesome over there)

I know Woodson is among the league leaders for INTs, but I just have seen too much of him getting beat and/or out of position this year. He’s still OUR MVP because of some intangibles, but honestly I don’t see this as his year to be in MVP discussions.

Side note, Pat Angerer from Indy has 98 total tackles (48 solo and 50 asst), that is 22 more than the next closest guy! CRAZY!!!

our defensive backfield has been OK

but you have to take into account the number of chances they have had for these numbers (INTS and passes defensed)..since the packers are usually up by a lot the teams have been passing like crazy

by tmoneyttime1 on Nov 8, 2011 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

The Packers have the 5th most attempts against them & snagged 16 INTs

The 4 teams that have more attempts against them:
NO: 4 INTs
Chi: 9 INTs
SF: 10 INTs
NE: 10 INTs
So it’s pretty clear that INTs are not necessarily correlated to attempts against.

A good way to look at it is to see what percentage of attempts were picked off (of teams with 7+ ints):

Buf: 15/283 = 5.3%

NYJ: 13/249 = 5.22%

GB: 16/319 = 5.02%

KC: 13/260 = 5%

Hou: 11/288 = 3.82%

Det: 11/296 = 3.72%

Atl: 10/278 = 3.6%

SD: 8/223 = 3.59%

Dal: 10/280 = 3.57%

NYG: 10/286 = 3.5%

Phi: 8/250 = 3.2%

SF: 10/324 = 3.09%

NE: 10/324 = 3.09%

Bal: 8/265 = 3.02%

Sea: 8/266 = 3.01%

TB: 8/275 = 2.91%

Chi: 9/327 = 2.75%

Jac: 7/260 = 2.69%

Ten: 8/302 = 2.65%

Oak: 7/314 = 2.23%

I don’t know about you, but I’ll take 3rd best in the league.

Interesting Topic

1. Aaron Rodgers- for obvious reasons
2. Clay Mathews- he’s our only pass rusher at this point
3. Charles Woodson- Without him, our D is screwed. He makes our D work!
4. Nick Collins- It’s pretty clear how vital he was to our secondary. He’s a multi-pro bowler and is currently missed.
5. BJ Raji- Although he’s playing out of place at DE in the base package, he’s still our best defensive linemen hands down
6. Tramon Williams- When healthy, he’s shutdown.
7. Greg Jennings- The combination of his route running and Rodgers’ awesomeness is lethal.
8. James Starks- Although he’s sharing his role now, he is currently our only receiving option and pass blocker at the HB position. That gives him 3 important roles on this team, and that makes him important.
9. Jermichael Finley- Yes, we won the Super Bowl without him. However, with him…our offense is downright unstoppable!
10. AJ Hawk- Wait…who?! No, I’m serious. His composure in the huddle while giving our D the plays is vital. Hawk is great with the mic and keeps our D relaxed. He also is making more plays than he was earlier in his career. Last year and this year…Hawk has really come around.

*While I agree that Scott Wells is underappreciated by many (including myself at times), he’s not irreplaceable. His intelligence and experience makes him a huge asset, but him being undersized doesn’t help our run blocking or pass blocking against the better DT’s in the league.
*I thought about putting Crosby on the list, but I’d like him to continue this success through the winter and maybe through next season before I deem him irreplaceable.
*I moved Greg Jennings down the list a little more because our offense can still function without him. It’s lethal with him, and functional without him. That’s largely because of how good Rodgers is as our QB. That’s why he’s not so high on the list.

My wife is gorgeous, but when she wears her pink Rodgers Jersey, she makes you fall to your knees...

Wells

Is very valuable for making the Oline calls. And he is currently the ONLY one that I consider capable of doing that at the level to ensure our Offense is running at a high level. I don’t have a problem w/ Wells on the list, cuz there is no backup worth mentioning that can do his job nearly as well. Your analysis of Wells is correct, but your leaving out the fact that he is the guy making the line calls, protections and adjustments. His leadership and experience are vital to the offense IMO!

Sitton and Wells over Collins

When we talk about irreplaceable players one thing to consider is who is behind that player. Right now that factor heavily points to Wells and Sitton being pretty darn high on the list, and it also means that they go higher than Collins. Do the Packers miss Collins? Yes, but in away he’s been replaced. Now he hasn’t been replaced as well as to be hoped and they miss him, but Burnett and Peprah have been muddling through.

On the other hand the offensive line, while playing better than the secondary, is not nearly as deep. Really the offensive line was never as deep at all this season. So what happens if Wells or Sitton go down for any significant amount of time. Evan Dietrich-Smith goes in. Picture that for a moment….the Packers relying on EDS to fill the role of either Wells or Sitton for a significant amount of time this season.

Do I really need to say anything more than that?

meh, not really

Kickers and punters can be found on the street generally. They may not be quite as good, but they are there. Centers and right guards are not just found on the street. It’s all about value.

Special teams like the ones you listed also don’t protect the guy who’s actually winning us most of our games and help him do the amazing things he does.

Clearly you didn’t picture EDS in there trying to block Suh and Kevin Williams. Bad Wiedman! Next time picture that nightmare scenario before trotting out the long snapper as someone essential.

Then again I would double check the value of a Center against that of a Punter…..especially when the only reason why the Packers are wining is due to the success of the offense. An offense that scored on all but three drives this past week….and that’s not an anomaly.

Go back and watch preseason games and just how bad that back up line is……it might surprise you.

Thoughts on Your Comments

The arguement for Nelson is valid, and I’d probably swap him out for Crosby. It was a toss up between the 2 for me. My reason on Crosby is that we are playing close games this year with a leaky defense, and it may come down to a FG to win it from over 50 yards. He’s been impecable this year. Also been great of kick-offs and executed a perfect onside kick. Would make the All-Pro team at kicker at halway point. I think we could lose Nelson if all others are healthy and still be good with Finley, Jones, Cobb and maybe Driver and Tori Gurley being promoted. Rodgers makes Nelson very good as well as did Favre make Schroder at one point.

Wells, with his knowledge and making all line calls, along with the fact that I don’t believe he’s given up a sack gets the nod over Sitton. I think Sitton had more raw ability but he’s not as good as he was last year and has gotten beat several times one on one this year. If run game was functioning better, I may give Sitton more credit.

Bishop is by far more valuable that Hawk. He has 4 sacks, leading team in tackles, and makes more plays than Hawk does. Both are bad in coverage, but Hawk is worse.

Starks is getting there but I need more consistency from him (i.e. see Chicago game). Not enough seperation between he and Grant….yet. I’d like to see what Starks can do wearing down a Def, getting the ball 20-25 times a game. But that won’t happen.

Woodson still deserves to be here, but is gradually slipping and are his coverage skills. He can still make plays with his savy and knowledge from studying tape, but athletically he gets beat too much and called for too many penalties. He’s definitely the epitomy of our bend but don’t break defense, capable of making big plays but also giving up too many.

by GreenandGold4Life on Nov 8, 2011 10:01 PM CST reply actions

Starks

I think 7 good games out of 8 qualifies as consistency. I think Starks has done a good job when called upon and is doing quite a bit for us in pass protection and receiving. His multi-role services is what makes him more valuable. if Starks goes down, we are in DEEP trouble. Grant is not a good pass protector and Saine hasn’t been here long enough to get that experience. Saine may be able to help on receiving out of the backfield though. Still, it’s a question mark. The injury of Alex Green alone at his point makes James Starks irreplaceable.

My wife is gorgeous, but when she wears her pink Rodgers Jersey, she makes you fall to your knees...

I've been one of the biggest Grant defenders on this site

There is a huge gap between Starks and Grant at this point. Starks has ran hard and constantly gained the extra yard, while it feels that Grant is running into players and doesn’t have the power to run over them.

Thats been the case for a couple years.

Grant has never been a guy who breaks tackles or makes guys miss. Tried to help you see that, but its got to be obvious now… Grant simply doesn’t have the ability of Starks and at this point Grant is a starter in name only. How many carries has he even had the past month? Can’t be more than 20. Starks is better in every way than Grant!

If Defense getting closer to “normal”, flynn replacing rodgers is better than having to leave a gaping hole where Raji is, or replacing Mathews with Brad Jones (goodness!) or replacing Sitton with….who knows!

BJ?

Why would BJ be at number 2? I think Woodson deserves to be at two, people underestimate the importance of verten leadership. He has singlehandly made that secondary better (at least in the playmaking department) Where is the love for Finley? He gets double teamed almost every play and in turn is responsible for freeing up the other recievers.

My Top Ten

1. Aaron Rodgers – Any reason not to put him number 1?

2. Charles Woodson – best defensive playmaker we’ve had since he’s put on the green and gold. Too bad he didnt start his career with us but maybe he became better because of that.

3. Jermicheal Finley/ Greg Jennings – One or the other, if not both, are being double teamed every play and freeing up our other recievers (besides donald driver, unfortunately)

4. Scott Wells/ Josh Sitton – Gotta love the big guys who keep the MVP upright

5. Clay Matthews – I wouldve placed the claymaker higher but the entire D has been playing bad so i can’t say having him double teamed is really benifitting anyone…

6. BJ Raji- Same argument as CM3

7. Tramon Williams – When healthy he is a top 5 cover corner.

8. John KUUUUUHHHHNNNN – Come on, who doesnt love screaming KUUUHHHNN after a 1 yard catch?

9. Morgan Burnett – He is gonna be a stud, I’m praying for Nick Collins health but id be lying if I didnt pray for a return to make the best safety duo in the NFL

10. Mason Crosby – The guy is Ryan Longwell reincarted and reininvented.

Theres my list, have at it,

Top 10

You have Woodson @ 7? Seriouly? Hes #2 for sure!!!! And Woodson provides a PASS RUSH everytim he blitzes!!!!!! Serious consideration should be give to moving him to safety with Nick Collins on IR.
They can survive without Matthews & Jennings. But where is Tim Mastay on this list? Are U serious or just taking him for granted or U just assume that punters are a dime dozen? (Remember his punting was such BIG factor in beating the Bears 2 times t the end of last season!) Remember Kampos? He sucked! I know punting is not pretty, but its vry meaningful & can change field position in a heart beat!
