Ryan Grant

Hey guys. I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I was wondering what everyone thinks about this. Remember, this isn't just about what Grant contributes. There are many other factors as well, contract, age and whether or not Thompson thinks that Grant is worth keeping around. We also have to account for the the fact that James Starks is getting better and many "experts" are saying he could be a feature type back. So lets hear what you all have to say.

Sorry.

I noticed someone voted already and Im sorry but i wanted to edit this a little and rewrite it a little(still the same concept) just to make sure I got it right. If you could re-vote that would be nice.

If Green comes back healthy

Then Grant is out for sure. Green could move up on the depth chart, and we could either nab two or three UDFAs or late round RB to compete to make the team. Save money, stay young.

Yeah like BlackPack-fan said,

He will be let go based largely on the money he is going to want. I like what I have seen from Green so far and who knows… maybe we grab Montee Ball! (dreaming)

It's all about value

If he comes on the cheap then why not? But really his value is going to be very low as a RB past the age of 30.

by PackApologist on Nov 8, 2011 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Probably not, no. He seems to be slowly getting phased out of the offense more and more as the year goes on. They seem to like Starks more, which makes sense cause he’s looked better.

I guess some of it could depend on Green’s recovery to though.

I vote no

I see Starks carrying the torch as our prime RB next season and Green has shown some promise and will probably be better when he returns healthy. Grant is getting up there in age, and unless you’re Emmit Smith, Walter Payton, or Marcus Allen…. the shelf life of a half back in the NFL hits about now. Not to say anything harsh about Grant, the guy has a good work ethic and I’m sure a good teacher to the younger running backs, but if he’s up next year, he can fit a hole in some other teams depth chart.

I don't think Grant should be brought back

I also don’t know if Starks can be a featured back. I would love to get someone who can be a featured back.

by Jeffersap on Nov 8, 2011 10:45 PM CST reply actions

At this point...

Grant is the starter in name only! Why would we want to re-sign an overpaid, over the hill RB? Makes no sense… Starks is the better RB in every way now and is using this year to prove it, while proving to the Packers that he can be the starter. Next year Green will be back, tho slightly slowed due to ACL’s generally taking 18 months to totally recover from. Getting the explosiveness back takes awhile as opposed to just getting the knee strong again. Next year, Starks is the feature RB, w/ Green taking the 3rd down role off Starks plate, while he also gets his explosiveness back. They will probably draft a RB at some point too. If Montee Ball comes out I would love to see him drafted in the 2nd or 3rd, not sure where he would be rated in the draft, but he’s definitely got the skills of an NFL RB!

Won the superbowl without him...

…sums up how important he is to us.

Could say the same thing about Finley, except that his presence has clearly elevated the offense to stratospheric heights. Probably drawn people away from Jordy and Jones, which is why they are having great years (shattering personal highs in TDs and Yards/catch)

Doubt Grant’s 6 carries per game have changed things much.

Where's the maybe vote?

It’s the last year of his contract and they already drafted his replacement (Alex Green) so this should be his last season with the Packers. However Green’s knee injury has messed up those plans, so now I’m not sure. Grant would certainly take another pay cut, and probably not be the starter even in name. But the Packers will need another running back next year. I don’t think they’d draft another running back in 2012 because Green will return. But they might want one more season from Grant.

by Brandon on Nov 9, 2011 1:19 AM CST reply actions

Why wouldn't they draft another RB?

They would need a 3rd RB, and I’m sure there’s a few RBs coming out that TT has his eye on.

I think someone will offer him more money so it will come down to if he wants to stay with the Pack and be a backup for about half the money or follow the money potentially still be the guy. My guess is the latter happens…esp if he gets another ring this year.

Grant

I don’t think there will be any teams lining up to sign Grant as a FA. And I also don’t think the Packers will have any interest in bringing him back. Would not surprise me if ends up signing a very low contract, maybe even a vets minimum. If thats the case I wouldn’t mind bringing him back… I don’t see him getting a 2M per year contract w/ anyone. Bet its alot closer to the vets minimum.

The Bears DID sign Marion Barber before this year.

I mean, if he can get signed, a healthy Grant should be able to.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

by msc32887 on Nov 11, 2011 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

Barber’s a better RB than Grant is. He’s a great goal line guy and he can block too. No team is going to want Grant to be an every down back. I don’t really see where he’d have a role with anybody.

Grant is a nice change of pace back

For a team that has a power back, it could prove useful to have a smaller, shiftier backup to throw out there every once in a while. Plus, very few teams run a one HB system these days.

"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."

by Kuhl on Nov 12, 2011 7:36 AM CST up reply actions

Grant

Is not a change of pace back. He is neither smaller or shiftier than most RB. In fact he’s probably average sized or better and has no elusiveness whatsoever! Saying Grant is smaller and shifter and a change of pace RB is like saying Peterson is a change of pace RB. Both are about 6’1 and Peterson is 218 to Grants 222… Grant is more of a power RB than he is a change of pace RB. He simply has no elusiveness! He’s worth keeping around the rest of this year since he’s already under contract, but at this point he is nothing more than a backup RB. And next year he shouldn’t be needed unless Green can’t get back.

Grant did some good things for the Packer, but he’s in his last season as a Packer, IMO.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Nov 12, 2011 9:14 AM CST up reply actions

And he’s not really that powerful either for being a power guy.

I know he put up good numbers for us and everything, but he’s just not that talented. He’s just so stiff. I think he’s left quite a few yards on the field in his career with us.

My point is compared to a Brandon Jacobs style back

For a team that is running a 240+ RB, Grant is a change of pace back. I don’t think he should come back next year, I’m just saying that he’ll land somewhere where he has the opportunity to get some touches as a number 2

"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."

by Kuhl on Nov 12, 2011 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

Not really...

Not if both are more or less power RB, more than they are a power RB and a completely different RB like say a Jacobs and Bradshaw. Now that is truly a difference that is meaningful, but a Jacobs to Grant, not so much… Both are more power than anything else… Besides how many teams actually have RB’s that are over 240, that they use on an every down basis? Pretty much named the ONLY one, and even that is questionable since Bradshaw IIRC had alot more carries than Jacobs did!!

Just saying he could be solid in a platoon

I may have described him incorrectly, but that’s all I was trying to say.

Barber was a terrible goal line back for the Cowboys last year though.

Well considering that is basically the role he had for them last year and he had 4 TDs all year, Yeah I would say it wasn’t very successful. He seems to be running like a new man this year though.

I'd like to have him back, but.....

The combination of him probably wanting more money than the Packers would be willing to give a backup RB, and the fact that he pretty much fits the profile of the sort of player Ted Thompson will let walk away, leads me to believe there is probably a less than 1% chance of it happening.

Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.

Cutler: (Swoops bangs out of eyes by throwing his head back) Whatever, I don’t need this team or you.

If they can get him at a significantly reduced salary I'd love to see him back

but otherwise, let him walk. Hopefully draft another RB in the later rounds or pick one up as a UFA and start grooming him like they did Starks at first, and in the meantime give Starks the full time job with Green to spell him occasionally

Grant

Grant may have a chance to be back. He’s a smart guy; he took a million dollar pay cut to make the team this year. It’s evident that Starks is the #1 back, but Grant doesn’t make any beefs about this. He’s secure with the ball and knows the offense. To stay in Green Bay, Grant may consider another pay cut and a role as #2 / #3 back as Green comes on line.

Green, however, has lost his entire rookie season with almost no playing time. McCarthy may be hesitant to have such an inexperienced #2.

A bigger question involves Donald Driver. Will he be encouraged to retire? The Packers have Jones and Cobb behind Driver, both who would contribute more. While Donald is under contract through next season, will he see his diminished production this year and decide to hang up the jersey?

by Packer Pete on Nov 9, 2011 6:05 PM CST reply actions

Hopefully

Driver walks away gracefully! I can’t see the Packers going w/ the same WR group again next year, since it would likely cost us Gurley, who has been doing extremely well on the PS playing against our #1 CB’s. Keeping Driver would definitely lose us Gurley… Driver should walk away. Its evident that he will only get fewer playing time next year than he is now. Makes no sense to keep playing for him or the Packers. A little for him monetarily, but I doubt the Packers want to see Gurley walk!

I know I may be displaying some homerism here.....

But I think a good back to look at drafting to replace Grant with is Doug Martin out of Boise State. Hard runner that has a good burst of speed, doesn’t fumble, and a decent reciever out of the backfield. A big reason why they lost last week is because he was out with a leg injury.
