Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

On Injured Packers and Erik Walden

Mike McCarthy revealed a new injury for the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday: LT Chad Clifton suffered a back injury recently. It wasn't made clear how the injury happened, but it's new. They expected him back at practice by now, and the new injury has made that impossible. With LT Marshall Newhouse playing well in his absence, there's no reason to rush him back. However, depending on when Clifton is ready to return later this season, it's hard to tell what his role might be. Or whether he'll be handed back his starting job.

Also RG Josh Sitton was ruled out, but that's been expected all week. No decision has been made on either LB Desmond Bishop or LB A.J. Hawk. They'll sit out Thursday and be re-evaluated on Friday.

I didn't have any reason to believe that LB Erik Walden wouldn't start against the Giants, and now they've confirmed it. No discipline for his arrest should be expected until after this week. Ironically, if Walden couldn't play, LB Frank Zombo should be active next Sunday, and they would have been covered. Walden should start, but he'll share time with Zombo.

None of these injuries have concerned me because they have good backups available. Who's absence would concern you the most on Sunday?

I'd have to say Bishop...

He’s been all over the place and making plays consistently all season.

With my last breath, I curse Zoidberg!

Sitton, no question

We are facing a team with a front seven that likes to attack. They rotate guys in and out with one goal, attack Rodgers. They are going to try and confuse the heck out of EDS. And throw the kitchen sink at him…

One miscue, and the franchise is at stake…

But he hung in there against some solid competition in Detroit. So we’ll see…

I'm more concerner about our linebackers

We haven’t been great in coverage and having some rookies in there might leave the middle of the field open for Ballard, their large TE.

linebackers miscue...leads to big yards

offensive lines miscue, possible brain damage to rodgers…

ehh...

He has a very keen awareness to who is around him in the pocket. I don’t know, I feel more confident in our OLine this year than I have in a while. It’s not the best, but I don’t hold my breath every time he sets up the big play. Maybe it has a lot to do with the success of the play action, but I would like to think it’s because our line play is improving.

You mean they're going to

slam our offensive linemen’s heads into the turf, and stomp on their arms?

Nope...

I expected them to at least sit him this week as well

Just as a precautionary mesure, if he ends up being proved guilty it would be wrong to start him this week.

The negative media attention he has brought to the team over the past week is enough to result in a play cut as well. Even if he is NOT guilty he obviously did something that was at least questionable behavior to warrant the charges.

Me too

Apparently the Green Bay Packers don’t mind so much if you beat up your girlfriend. …unless they buy his [ever-changing] story, which it’s hard to believe how anybody could.

by Curly Lambeau on Dec 1, 2011 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

In the past it seems the Packers have lways been pretty hard ass'd about criminal charges,

he should not be playing this week in my opinion. Could very well be the last professional start of his career .

What charges are those?

You mean the one for Jolly where they suddenly released him? Oh.. nevermind, he’s still on the reserve/suspended list. Must be the one for Underwood where they released him at the first sign of trouble? Ooops, they brought him back to training camp next year!

Apparently you haven’t been paying attention! The Packers do everything in their power to only bring in good guys. But they don’t just dump them when trouble finds the players either! They actually stick w/ them and try to help them as much as they can. Thats how the really good organizations operate! Can’t just dump a guy at the first sign of trouble… That makes you look like you don’t give a damn about them too!

BTW-the woman is the one changing the story not Walden! Get your facts straight next time!

When a girl changes her story in an assault case

It means one of two things to me. Either she’s a wackidoo who you should leave ASAP or she realized her meal ticket could go out the door.

I would like to think it was a big misunderstanding but I believe otherwise.

Strippers do nothing for me. I like a strong, salt of the Earth, self-possessed woman at the top of her field. Your Steffi Grafs, your Sheryl Swoopeses, but I will take a free breakfast buffet anytime, anyplace.

I think she realized that she was in the wrong

We don’t have the whole story but she did change the story… leaving me to believe she wasn’t being honest.

He shouldn’t have “hit” her… but this seems to be blown way out of proportion.

If he had done something wrong, MM would have sat his ass.

Agreed.

No NFL team would let him play without sufficient investigation. Maybe there’s a dearth of information at the moment, maybe they didn’t believe the girlfriend, who knows.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

From what I read.

My guess is that she was pushing or hitting him he was trying to leave or get away from her and she got knocked down and hit her head on the bed. I find it interesting that her mother is standing by Walden.
I’m not claiming to know what happened and am sure no one here knows exactly what happened. What if she is a large physical women and he was just trying to defend himself or get away? If that is the case I don’t think he should be benched or cut.

There is something to be said for trying to make a relationship work when there are children.

Not really surprised

Until the DA decides whether or not to press charges, it’s a sticky situation.

Right now, the only story that anyone is sticking to is that she was going after him, and he pushed her. The DA is looking into it more to see if he can figure out if she’s lying now, or lying before, but that is the story right now.

Not to minimize domestic violence in any way, but this situation is different than Chris Cook’s a month or so back. The biggest difference is the fact that Cook was charged with multiple felonies immediately, while Walden still isn’t charged with anything. And honestly, even if the girlfriend is lying to protect him, I don’t see how the DA would be able to bring charges at this point. There are no other witnesses, and her injuries are consistent with her story (specifically the bruised hand is consistent with her hitting Walden, and the head injury from the fall after being pushed).

Now, if they actually do charge Walden, that is when I expect to see him no where near the field.

Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.

Cutler: (Swoops bangs out of eyes by throwing his head back) Whatever, I don’t need this team or you.

Different? …yeah, maybe, a little.

But he still hit a woman.

I realize that the team can’t — and maybe even shouldn’t — cut him, but it’s still going to suck having to cheer for a guy who hits women.

by Curly Lambeau on Dec 2, 2011 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

Hit a Women?

Where are you getting that?

by GinSlinger on Dec 2, 2011 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed!

We are too quick to condemn people in the NFL and most of the time before the facts are laid out. Many possibilities here and it could be totally self defense with a push. Nobody including the police have ever said that he “hit her” and I’m quite sure her mom would have a difference stance if he had. If she’s only looking for a “meal ticket” why not
scream she was beaten and sue him for his life’s earnings. Let’s hear it out first!

Back to the question at hand, I really wish Bishop could get back. He has a nose for the ball, covers his assignment and knows how to tackle.

My other lingering question is: “how did we get so many fast leg (knee) injuries in Detroit?” Cheap shots or just the way the cards fell? Makes one wonder doesn’t it?

my guess is fatigue...

We played 3 games in 11 days and 2 of them in a 4 day stretch. That is a hefty toll on anyone. Bishop and Hawk both have calf strains, which could be a combination of over exertion and dehydration. Starks had a knee sprain from the Tampa game, they just pulled him once we got a good lead to be safe. The only knee injury we got was Sitton and if I remember, I think he got twisted up and landed on it wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hawk and Bishop are ready to go Sunday.

While I agree that many people may have rushed to judge Walden

But by the same token changes stories don’t mean he was obviously innocent. Abuse people often try to protect thier a users and the “I fell” excuse is so common that’s the easiest way to crack a joke about abuse. I hope Walden is innocent and we have to remember innocent until proven guilty but we probably shouldn’t rush to judge either way and the whole situation does seem conspicuous

Damned if you do

Damned if you don’t, huh?

I still haven’t seen that she actually changed her story. I saw the original reports say she and he were fighting and she hit her head. I see her latest story is she was going at him, he defended herself, and fell/got pushed down and into the bed. Seems the same story just more elaborate.

by GinSlinger on Dec 1, 2011 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

reading comprehension?

See the part of the article where the DA says “she may never have changed her story”? See the part where the article repeats her original story? Adding details is not “changing.”

by GinSlinger on Dec 1, 2011 5:23 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I do...
Zakowski indicated Monday that the accuser’s account of the incident had changed. According to him, she said she hit Walden first and that he was defending himself. The accuser, Walden’s live-in girlfriend, received four stitches to her forehead at a hospital after hitting her head on the bedpost and also injured her thumb, he said.

There is the part where they talk about the victim changing her story, which is very common in domestic violence cases.

“It may be she says she never really did change her story, that is what she said from the get-go and it was misreported,” Zakowski said.

Doesn’t say they just elaborated, it says it may have been misreported. Her original story was he pushed her first. She then changed it to he was defending himself. Not saying either is right or wrong,

by stratefaced on Dec 2, 2011 8:03 AM CST up reply actions

Um, no

When it says “changed her story,” try reading “elaborated” and see how it works. From the first reports she simply said they had been fighting and she hit her head. I remember because of all the people making “walked into a door” references (maybe it wasn’t many people, but many comments to that effect).

Go now and find her original story, the one that changed. If she did change her story, why aren’t they pursuing charges of filing a false report?

by GinSlinger on Dec 2, 2011 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

Also

to my point, and you must have missed it:

“It may be she says she never really did change her story, that is what she said from the get-go and it was misreported,” Zakowski [the DA] said.

Ridiculous statements about Walden

The one thing the Packers organization doesn’t do is rush decisions without all the facts. No charges. Unclear on what actually happened. Apparent victim changes story.

Until this picture clears up, you cannot sit Walden. If the Packers made snap decisions like some of you want them to do, they would have jumped on Albert Haynesworth when it looked the linebackers were dropping like flies.
