Vikings To Release Donovan McNabb

No one could have predicted than an immobile veteran quarterback playing behind a porous offensive line, who needed to learn a new offensive system despite his poor work habits, would be a failure.

As it stands going into Thursday, when former Vikings QB Donovan McNabb will be on waivers, Dallas holds 21st waiver claim, Chicago 24th.
Dec 01 via webFavoriteRetweetReply

I don't think he'll draw a claim from the Bears since their offensive line isn't known for their excellent pass protection either. The Cowboys may have more interest, but they could probably wait. Let him clear waivers and then sign him for less, if Jon Kitna's back injury isn't expected to improve anytime soon.

It'd be funny if Chicago ended up with McNabb

Gives us another shot at him, but I see him really going nowhere except maybe a desperate Houston team (Unless they really, really wanna go with Delhomme), but seriously… it might be time for him to hang it up. He’s not the same guy they had in Philly back in ’04.

In his dreams...

McChoke wanted out, dreaming he’d be picked up by Chicago or Houston, and choke his way onto a playoff team. My prediction? No one claims him. He’s damaged goods, wa-ay past his prime, and locker room poison. Somewhere, TO is laughing his ass off.

Hmm

I said over on DN a couple of times, and I’ll say it here: I don’t think McNabb played that poorly in Minnesota. At least not poor enough to get benched, imo. The Vikings offense just isn’t very good. Charlie Johnson is a below average player, Hutchinson at this point is average, Sullivan is horrible, the combo they’ve used at RG has sucked, and Loadholt’s probably the worst starting RT in the league when it comes to pass pro.

Then add in that they have no #1 receiver, or even #2 really, and well, it’s not that surprising that McNabb didn’t look good. He’s not what he once was but I still think he has some ability left.

I could see the Bears grabbing him. Hanie looked absolutely horrible in that game against the Raiders. Is Chicago willing to wait for him to maybe start playing better? Maybe, the better the question is, can they afford too?

McNabb missed a ton of throws

He didn’t have a lot of help, but he didn’t do too much for himself in Minnesota.

McNabb has always been pretty inconsistent.

One of the biggest qualms Eagles fans had was that he’d just throw so many groundballs, one of the reasons for his low average career completion percentage.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

The thing with Philly, though

Reid is terrible at calling a balance offense. He’s had great backs like Westbrook and McCoy but insisted on throwing the ball 40 or more times a game with QB’s of questionable throwing ability. This would be fine if his QB’s were Brees or Rodgers, but with McNabb and Vick? Not so much…

by Charlie Kelly on Dec 1, 2011 6:12 PM CST up reply actions

Very true. That would be so frustrating as a fan to watch.

Yeah, but like others said he’s always done that. You know you’re going to get 4-5 ground balls from him a game — it’s just the way it is.

And when you factor in none of their receivers getting separation and his hesitance to throw to covered guys. That ground ball number is gonna jump up even higher.

It was pretty much the same with Favre last season. Only Favre wasn’t hesitant to throw into coverage, and threw a lot more picks as a result.

That's somewhat true

He still bears a lot of responsibility for the Vikings early season struggles, though.

Yeah, he had his faults. I just didn’t think it was right to heap it all on him like some were doing. As it wasn’t fair to do to Favre in 2010 either.

That offense the Vikings have needs to undergo some major rebuilding, and so does the defense really. A lot of us had been saying that it was all or nothing in 2008-2009, and that’d they’d be in trouble afterwards. Well, now that’s here and I can’t lie, I’m loving it.

Not that I've paying really close attention to the viqueens...

But that ROOKIE QB is running the offense better than McNabb did! I would say that qualifies as pretty poor when a rookie QB is outplaying him. But, hey, thats just me…

The two offenses have been run pretty differently imo. Things have seemed pretty basic for Ponder but I could be off on that.

I think his ability to avoid pressure is what has him looking better than McNabb did.

What a waste of a 6th round draft choice and what a waste of 3rd round draft choice last year on Moss. Yet they still want to make trades and sign free agents because after all, heck, “they are not that far way”.That team, in fact the whole Viking nation in general, they just don’t get it, do they?

by Timothy Bryce on Dec 1, 2011 3:32 PM CST reply actions

It was a desperation move

They’re still only two years removed from an NFC Championship appearance and they’re trying to get a stadium built. They wanted to appear as they were still competing, not rebuilding. It obviously didn’t work, but I guess they had to try to appease the average fan.

Wanted appear as if they were still competitive, more than they actually cared about BEING competitive.

I think a backup position is all he'll be able to get at this point.

The chances of him coming in and learning the offenses in Chicago and Houston in time to actually contribute seem pretty slim. Also, he has looked really bad so far this year.

I suspect he's pretty nearly done,

although I also don’t think he was quite as bad as he seemed to be. Very inconsistent, and way too many passes to the yard markers, but the Vikes had decent half-time leads in several games, and not all the points were scored by the D.

Minny’s management was apparently surprised to discover that their offense just isn’t very good this year. Certainly, McNabb wasn’t good enough to fix that.

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him land on a contender as a backup, if he’s willing to be flexible on the contract.. I mean, who else is left? This has been a tough year for QBs.

I've said it before, and will do so again, here.

The Eagles knew what they were doing when they traded him within their own division.
They knew that he is washed up to the point where he will never lead any team to anything significant again.

They were right, and the Redskins finally figured it out and gave up on him, as well.

I kinda expect that McNabb will figure it out, too (if he hasn’t already), and retire, thus making the Vikings the last team to figure it out.

I could be wrong about that last, though. :)

I can't help but feel bad for the guy though.

I’ve always thought he was a decent player, but I think he was propped up by working in Andy Reid’s system. If he could find a similar situation I think he could have success. I think he would need to find a team with good possession receivers, a strong running game, and a scheme that relies on short passes and screens. Now whether or not there is a team that fits that remains to be seen and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he never plays again.

McNabb

USED to be a really good QB, the USED to be, being the important phrase! He has nothing left. At this point I would sign Brent Farve before McNabb!
