Second Quarter Open Thread: Raiders at Packers

GREEN BAY, WI - DECEMBER 11: Aaron Rodgers #12 of the Green Bay Packers participates in warm-ups before a game against the Oakland Raiders at Lambeau Field on December 11, 2011 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

It's Ryan's world (Ryan Grant and Ryan Taylor) and we just live in it. The Raiders are struggling to sustain drives, and the Packers are scoring on every possession. The Raiders defense isn't keeping pace at all with the Packers offense. A flag has pushed them back, but they're still on the move for another score. Keep it up for four quarters.

Packers 14, Raiders 0.

He held up wonderfully against top flight DE’s, allowing 5+ sacks in a game only 2-3 times a year.

Might be a good idea, if the Packers can continue this and get a couple of more touchdowns before the end of the half, to have Cobb sit out the second half and tell him to come in early tomorrow for a special meeting. by packallday555 on Dec 11, 2011 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

“You have to deal with him,” said Tampa Bay Buccaneers pro personnel director Shelton Quarles, whose team held Finley to one catch for 30 yards. "You can’t cover him with a linebacker. He’s too quick. It’s tough to do it with a safety, too.

“You can try to cover him with a corner. But you have to put someone over the top against him. But then there’s Jordy (Nelson). He can hurt you, too. It’s sort of like pick your poison.”

Based on the way teams have played the Packers this season, opponents have chosen not to let Finley bring them to their knees. There is rarely an occasion where Finley gets to run a route with only one defender to worry about.

“Usually, it’s an inside linebacker underneath and a safety over the top,” Finley said. “Sometimes it’s a corner and sometimes it’s a safety. But there’s usually someone over the top. I don’t know if everybody sees that.”

Fire Slocum

by packallday555 on Dec 11, 2011 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

yeah but if they roll the other double team to Nelson that just means Jones, Driver, and Cobb get the chance to feast on one on ones

and also, look at what Nelson did in the Super Bowl last year. Are you gonna tell me that was because of Finley drawing coverage away from his spot on the bench

football does not build character, it reveals character.

by sheehan on Dec 11, 2011 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

No, I’m just telling you that Finley allows Nelson to be singled up quite a bit. Along with all the other receivers.

I’m not saying Nelson does what he does because of Finley. He’s good, solid receiver. But there’s no denying that he gets more favorable matchups because of Finley.

And then you’ve got to factor in how much Finley helps Rodgers decipher what the defense is going to do.
