On The Green Bay Packers Win Over The Raiders

GREEN BAY, WI - DECEMBER 11: Ryan Taylor #82 of the Green Bay Packers catches a touchdown pass as Jerome Boyd #30 of the Oakland Raiders brings him down at Lambeau Field on December 11, 2011 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

I've written more on the Green Bay Packers 46-16 win over the Raiders in my earlier recap. Overall, the team was very impressive in nearly every facet of the game. I was concerned about the pass protection, Aaron Rodgers took a few shots, but that hasn't been a persistent problem this season. On the other hand, while the pass defense played great against Carson Palmer, that doesn't mean they'll be great the next time they face Eli Manning or Drew Brees.

Jennings suffers knee sprain in win - JSOnline. We will know more tomorrow. It was called a "knee sprain" in the post-game press conference and it could be something a whole lot worse later on Monday.

Twitter / @MikeVandermause: McCarthy: Saine concussion ... In addition to Greg Jennings's knee sprain, Brandon Saine and Ryan Pickett each suffered a concussion. We will just have to wait and see if they clear the concussion protocols later this week.

Rapid Reaction: Packers 46, Raiders 16 - NFC North Blog - ESPN. Not only was it TE Ryan Taylor's first touchdown of the season, it was his first play from scrimmage on offense.

The Jennings "kne sprain"

That whole article didn’t ease my concerns on him being out for the remainder of the regular season. Even though we just have to win next week to clinch the #1 seed throughout, I’d prefer to have our #1 WR out there then not.

I don't know about first

The Broncos game was a pretty full domination as well. And the Vikings @ Lambeau too.

We were outscored 16-15 after Jennings left!

DOOOOOOOMED!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, Jennings is a great receiver a a huge loss but in ‘96 we lost Brooks and won SB XXXI and it’s not like we’re not very, very deep at WR, we’ll survive

idk if this covered in the game thread or not (so forgive me if it was),

but jennings smiled and gave someone the “thumbs up” on his way to the tunnel while he was on the cart. can we read anything into that, or did he just see someone he knew?

The initial reports didn’t seem too serious. Now his career might be over.

I’ll wait for the MRI and take a little solace in the fact that WR is our deepest position on the roster and the PS.

I think everyone is blowing Jennings injury way out of proportion.

Does it suck? Well yeah, but I don’t think its going to have the effect that some people think it will. Losing your #1 receiver is never a good thing, but if there was ever a team that could mitigate its effect, its this one. They run 5 deep at receiver and 4 deep at tight end. Even with Jennings out that is eight very capable receivers not counting the guys coming out of the backfield. I’m sure losing Jennings will have the domino effect of Jordy now receiving more attention from opposing defenses, but whats to say JJ can’t step up like Jordy has this year. Throw in the fact that DD is still very capable, Cobb is improving every week, and the only thing that can stop Finley is Finley and this is still a very potent offense. I’m not trying to say that losing Jennings is no big deal, but some people on here are acting like they’ll look like the current Bears offense just by losing Jennings.

Finley is the guy who has to step up

Really this is going to be like the reverse of Finley’s injury last year. Jennings has gotten most of the targets so far, but Finley has been quieter than was expected, where last year the offense ran through Finley till he got hurt and then focused on Jennings (who had a disappointing first half of last year).

Finley has been a bit of a let down this year. He’s had drops and hasn’t been targeted as much. Hell, he’s even shot his mouth off about not getting the ball as much and raising controversy about what position he’s played. This hasn’t been really bad, and he’s not made many waves, but it’s still more waves than production.

He’s the guy who is going to have to fill the shoes of Jennings and make up for the production. He’s going to have to be the guy who can make plays like Graham and either of the NE TE’s. He has to step up and put the team on his back so that the rest of the WR’s can continue to run free.

Finley will now get a lot more attention from the secondary

I know that he has been double-teamed quite often, but now that is going to increase. A smart defensive coordinator is going to make Jones and Driver beat them and concentrate on Finley more.

by MikeDB on Dec 12, 2011 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

Driver will be his reliable self (though I am sure drop problems will come up)...

But I think Jones can be a guy that steps up. Understandably he is buried on the depth chart, but he still is pretty valuable. Let him prove himself here, I think he will be successful.

That dog just won't hunt.

For me

Its Finley that has to step up. He has dropped to many balls lately (though that INT in the end zone was not on him, Rodgers needed to get some more air under it), and he needs to get some more separation.

by Shoes31 on Dec 12, 2011 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

On a fade into the endzone against the sideline...

Its kinda hard to get seperation. On that pass its not about the reciever getting open its about the placement of the ball. And your right in that Rodgers needed to get more air under the ball. Finley should not have had to reach back over the shoulders of the DB for the ball. He should have to reach UP, straight up, for the pass, not behind the DB w/ the DB’s arm between his. Ideally that ball is well over the DB and Finley is reaching straight into the air, not behind the DB’s head.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Dec 12, 2011 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure that ball was placed directly between Finley and the DB.

Finley just straight up got pick-pocketed.

by Bezerkers on Dec 12, 2011 11:50 PM CST up reply actions

Finley

At his highest point had to reach horizontally back toward the DB for the ball, w/ both of the DB’s arms between his own. That is not where the ball should be placed. Finley should be reaching straight into the air for the ball. Rodgers pass was not where it needed to be for Finley to have a chance at making that catch. The ball needs to be above finley’s head not the DB’s. Both of the DB’s arms were between Finley’s, that being the case its pretty much impossible for Finley to come down w/ it.

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011121101/2011/REG14/raiders@packers#menu=highlights&tab=recap

If you stop at the :16 sec mark you can clearly see the DB’s arms pushing Finleys apart and Finley reaching horizontally, not vertically above his own head. Kinda hard to come down w/ the ball when both the DB’s arms are between your own pushing them apart and having to reach back horizontally not above you.

by Strohman on Dec 13, 2011 12:54 AM CST up reply actions

Finley is way bigger and stronger than that DB

no way that DB should be able to outmuscle him that way

by sheehan on Dec 13, 2011 1:02 AM CST up reply actions

The DB's arms are between Finleys and the ball.

How is Finley supposed to come down w/ the ball when the DB’s arms are in a better positon to catch the ball than his own? All the while Finley was having to reach backward/horizontally, not upward. A well placed throw is above Finleys head where the DB can’t even get his hands near the ball or Finleys arms. Then Finley size is the advantage, but when the ball is at the DB’s head in height, Finley’s size means nothing. To take advantage of Finleys size the ball should be where the DB can’t even reach it. Try catching a ball when another guy has both his arms betweeen your arms and also between you and the ball. Pretty much impossible.

Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!

by Strohman on Dec 13, 2011 1:33 AM CST up reply actions

because his hands were around the ball, and he's much stronger than the DB

the same thing happened on his touchdown in San Diego.

I agree the pass wasn’t perfect, but really you are going to put that one on Rodgers? I think your perception of passing efficiency has been scewed by how amazing Rodgers has been this year. Finley should have caught it. The pass could have been higher, but Finely should have pulled it in. He’s too talented to have someone rip that thing out of his hands.

Agree

Finley failed to get his hands on the ball, which was the major reason that the ball then bounced off his chest into the arms of the defender. It would have been a tough catch with the arms of the defender between his arms, but he has to get his hands on the ball, and he didn’t do that. (The ball did graze one of his hands, but that is not what I’m talking about, when I say that he needs to get his hands on the ball.)

It could also have been a pass interference as the defender wasn’t playing the ball at all and was trying to keep Finley’s arms away from the ball. Overall, it was a good play by the DB.

by MikeDB on Dec 13, 2011 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

yeah it definitely should have been thrown higher

that being said, it still went right through his hands and he should have had it

Let's wait and see!

It could be nothing more that some hyper extention or a bruise. One thing for sure,
Jennings isn’t going to sit out unless he absolutely has no choice. I think we are
also forgetting Jones has been quite handy this year with few drops and real
dependable when we need a big first down. Also, our young Mr. Cobb seems to
come open when ever he is in the game. As long as we have a healthy Rodgers,
we still have the receivers but I would feel bad if Jennings can’t play for any length
of time. He makes things happen.

Although Grant had a nice game, I hated to see Saine get hurt, he was looking good
on his turns.

I am not however, going to do the bridge thing regardless. Water here is all froze now
and a guy could get hurt.
