On Quarterback, Packers-Chiefs Connections, Stock, Running Backs, and Wide Receivers

KANSAS CITY, MO - NOVEMBER 27: Quarterback Tyler Palko #4 of the Kansas City Chiefs throws a pass down field against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the first half on November 27, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images)

Chiefs undecided on who will start at quarterback | National Football Post. While the Chiefs might not know who will start at quarterback, the Packers are probably going to assume it'll be Tyler Palko. It's not like they have any regular season film to watch on Ricky Stanzi anyway. For what it's worth, I wasn't very impressed with Stanzi in college at Iowa. I guess Kyle Orton is not part of this discussion because of his injured finger.

Packers-Chiefs Connections Start With Mike McCarthy - Arrowhead Pride. A nice roundup of all the players and coaches with ties to both teams.

Green Bay Packers news | Packers stock must be ordered by Friday for Christmas delivery | Green Bay Press Gazette. If this is part of your Christmas shopping plans, then it's time to place your order.

Packers work out six, four of them RBs - JSOnline. RB Tyrell Sutton, one of the stars of the 2009 preseason, was in for a workout. If Brandon Saine can't play due to his concussion, and James Starks remains out, then the Packers are very thin in the backfield with only Ryan Grant and John Kuhn. If Saine doesn't pass the concussion protocol and return to practice, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign a running back later this week.

Donald Driver To The Rescue | Cheesehead TV. While Greg Jennings is out, the bulk of the pass attempts might go to Driver. I'd agree that James Jones and Randall Cobb should expect more pass attempt too.

Apparently, it will Kyle Orton who gets the nod this weekend with Palko as the backup … interception city.

That's bad news for us, Orton is the most capable of the three QBs to put up a lot of points, by far.

It doesn’t mean I’m worried, but it’s slightly less of a gimme game with him under center.

Crennel just said today

Orton starts Sunday if the finger is healed enough. If not, Stanzi debuts.

by Fidelis86 on Dec 14, 2011 11:49 AM CST reply actions

So the irony in all of this

We should be at a theoretical advantage if Stanzi starts because we played KC in preseason game #4 where typically it’s an all backup affair. Instead Haley kept his starters in most of the game because that’s how he rolled and we got more practice against Cassel.

Conclusion: Haley is a genius.

I think he's a genius for getting fired BEFORE this game.

Also: the Packers played against Kyle Orton earlier this year as a member of the Broncos. His line in that game:
22-32, 273 yards, 3 TDs, 3 INT

I'll be interested in seeing what defensive schemes Crennel draws up to limit Rodgers

Crennel always found a way to limit Peyton Manning – obviously when he was with NE – but also since he’s been in KC yards in the air have been more difficult to come by. KC is actually in the Top 10 in passing D, allowing just over 200 yds/g.

That being said, I don’t expect KC to pull off the upset or anything to that end. Crennel’s just pretty crafty with his defensive packages, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rodgers and the offensive machine sputter a bit this Sunday. Arrowhead is always a tough environment as well.

eh, they have been blown out by buffalo and miami at arrowhead this year.

and lost 2 others by more respectable margins. i don’t think them being at home will help them any.

if by "sputter a bit" you mean that the Packers will score less than 60 points ... yeah, I'm hoping we can keep your team down just a little bit

but I’m not counting on it :-)

Not really a Chiefs fan at all - I'm an Indianapolis fan, I just like to browse other blogs

I don’t mean to say that the Pack isn’t going to win, I just wouldn’t underestimate Crennel’s Defense

Chief D isn't bad..

I was at the game in Chicago and they were very hard hitting. I’m sure we’ll score, just hoping for no injuries.

This is absolutely true and as a Missourian I have always kept an eye on the Cheifs as my AFC team and have great respect for them

That said, the Packers have faced a top passing D on the road and we lit up the scoreboard in SD. Also you have to realize that your division has two of the top 10 pass D’s, two other good pass D’s, and no good and wonder if the last part has a greater affect on the first two then the defenses playing well

I don't think the 'grab and hold the receivers all game long' strategy that he used against the Colts will work

that’s why the rules were changed. All though teams have been doing a fair amount of that in recent games against the Packers, and to an extent it does work because the refs won’t call it on every play

Orton has been practicing with first team today and getting most of the snaps ... he'll start if his finger doesn't fall off

TT really sucks at life and no deity on earth would give this failure any more chances...

so it must be luck that he has the opportunity to make up for the biggest failure of his tenure in letting the future HoF’er Tyrell Sutton go.

???

Wouldn’t that involve a trade for Palko, Rodgers even up.

by glblank on Dec 14, 2011 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

Well if they do start Orton

This game got tougher. Orton, while unspectacular, is a competent QB. And the Chiefs WR corps is better than decent.

And the fact that he's seen us once already

has to help him more than the fact that we’ve seen him.

if the Packers can't defeat a Kyle Orton led Chiefs team in a game that still has meaning for them this late in the season

they’re not a Super Bowl team.

I don’t see any way this isn’t a comfortable victory, Orton or no

The Saints lost to the Rams

Do you want to look into that loss too much? I don’t like the cliche that “On any given Sunday”, but it is true. And that chiefs team is not bad, if they had a halfway decent QB in the last games, they would have won some. Their D is pretty good, they have better than decent WR’s, and a good running game.

by Shoes31 on Dec 15, 2011 7:42 AM CST up reply actions

this is late in the season though, with a chance to clinch homefield advantage

not to mention they’re going for an undefeated season, and if the players can’t get up for that type of game it doesn’t bode well for the playoffs.

When a team like the Saints loses to a team like the Rams it’s because they came out completely flat and played like they were half asleep all day. If those two teams played again New Orleans would kill them.

I just don’t see the Packers coming out flat like that this late in the season, with so much on the line. They’ve already had a couple games like that against Tampa and New York, I don’t see it happening again, personally.

and even if they did come out flat there’s no way they should lose to the Chiefs

Okay

How about that 49ers and Cardinals game? The 49ers should have won that game quite handily, but they did not. And that one loss could hurt their chances for a first round bye. I think you are discounting the Chiefs as a team way too much.

The Patriots lost to the Bills, are they a Superbowl team? How about the Ravens loosing to the Jags and Titans, are they a Superbowl team? Bad games happen, games happen where everything you do does not work or where you are just plain unlucky, and games happen where you are pencil whipped. Right now, every team is going to be even more motivated to beat us, and no game should be taken for granted.

Cards/9ers

The Cards have a pretty good team, better than most think… And the 9ers are a little overrated! I didn’t completely call that upset, but I mentioned it as definitely possible!

by Strohman on Dec 15, 2011 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, the Cards are technically still in playoff contention...

the Niners are their “hated” rival, and they have been playing a lot better lately even though they’ve been swapping between starting QBs due to injury.

That defense has really come together nicely for them.

If they beat the Browns they will be a .500 team, having gone 6-1 since their 1-6 start.

the niners are nowhere near as good as the Packers

and the Chiefs are also considerably worse than the Cards
