On The Offensive Line and Aaron Rodgers
Green Bay Packers news | Source: Sherrod broke both bones in lower leg | Green Bay Press Gazette. What a gruesome injury to Derek Sherrod. Get well soon. From the Press-Gazette:
Sherrod underwent emergency surgery in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday after the game and remained hospitalized there. The source said Sherrod was expected to be released on Thursday or Friday.
NFC North at night - NFC North Blog - ESPN. Mike McCarthy said Bryan Bulaga has a sprained knee cap and isn't expected to play against the Bears on Sunday. There's no timetable for his return either. It reminds me of the knee injury that will keep Greg Jennings out until the playoffs, but that's only my best guess. It's great to read that LT Chad Clifton is expected back for individual drills this week.
Sports Radio 810 WHB. I did a radio interview last week with ESPN radio in Kansas City, and they provided me with audio of Aaron Rodgers post-game press conference. He sounded relaxed and confident despite the loss. Listening to his tone, and what he was saying, it just confirmed for me that this loss was only a bump in the road

Or MM does what Pete Carroll did and stick with the running game in the second half after being held to almost nothing in the first half.
The Bears secondary is weak and can be beaten and if you run the ball enough the playaction becomes even more effective and the Packers can have some big plays … provided our receivers catch the damn ball.

I'm even more paranoid
Start Flynn. I’m not at all worried about the Packers chances of winning in SF.
this is a chicken shit way to approach watching the game, no offense
he’ll play as long as they don’t have the number one seed locked up, and probably after, and he’ll be fine, do you not remember 2009 where he got demolished every single week and was perfectly fine? I’m not saying it’s 100% guaranteed that he won’t get hurt, but it’s no more likely than it’s ever been before when the O-line’s been bad (which it has been for about half of his career so far)

If the Packers lose out and the 49ers win out
and then both win their playoff games, the 49ers would have home field in the NFC championship game. It’s the only scenario where the Packers can play a road game in the playoffs this season.
The 49ers have to go to Seattle on Saturday night, and the Packers
won’t be losing out. The Bears don’t have an offense, and McCarthy and Co. have this week to get the line figured out and the next two weeks to test it in game situations. Green Bay will have homefield advantage.

No I don't. I know they lost in KC. I saw the game.
That being said, the Bears are bringing an offense even more inept than the Chiefs to Lambeau, and they’ll up against a Packer team that is pissed off. Hell, depending on what happens in Seattle on Saturday, the Packers may have homefield by midnight on Saturday. Their offense has scored 21 points over the last 3 weeks, and I can’t see the Packer offense putting up a performance like last weeks 2 weeks in a row.

Hey who knows, they are bringing in a new QB and a new (better) starting RB…who knows what happens. Its HIGHLY unlikely the Bears could put up even 19 points but I do worry about Rodgers behind this offensive line against a solid D like the Bears. The Chiefs have a good D…the Bears have a very good D.

Could be, or...
… McCarthy will demonstrate why he should be considered for coach of the year and come up with a game plan that doesn’t have Rodgers lingering in the pocket where he will get pounded. Teams were sharpening the game plan to beat the Packers since Tampa Bay made that game too close. The Chiefs were the first team to successfully get to Rodgers with four and press the receivers. I expect GB’s wideouts to be more physical against the Bears and more multiple TE sets to beat press coverage. If Rodgers goes downfield I don’t expect it to be from the pocket. Chicago is not defending the pass too well but is decent against the run. McCarthy will probably go no huddle early and try to get the Bears out of rhythym.
So sorry to hear about Mr. Sherrod - horribly unfortunate
Most of us knew from the replay that it was pretty brutal but most didn’t expect a double-break. Horrible news and we all wish him a speedy and full recovery. At least it’s bone and not ligaments, ankles/joints or serious concussion. Seems like bone is something you can bounce back from without much future concern.

How to win without an O-line
If Clifton can’t come back, that leaves the team with one tackle, and that’s Newhouse, who isn’t very good. They need to play 2-TE sets a lot if Rodgers is going to have any time. The problem with dink and dunk, however, is that Chicago’s LBs are terrific. GB will have trouble if they can’t stretch the field. I think the Chicago LBs are too disciplined and fast for screens and runs to help much. I recommend lots of shotgun and isolation stuff for receivers on short routes near the sidelines. Get them the ball (assuming the catch it) before the LBs can react and hope they can break some tackles.
I agree that Flynn should get some snaps, but tI’d say that a necessary condition for winning without an O-line is for the QB and receivers to read each others’ minds, and that’s more likely with the starters.
But sideline routes will stop the clock
and surely we need to keep it running to keep Hanie on the sideline. C’mon.the best offense this week is make this game go as fast as we can….especially time wise.
RUN,Dink,Run,Dunk repeat as directed and as often as needed.
Cute
But I didn’t mean to imply that receivers should head out of bounds – just that if DBs are not in press coverage, slinging the ball out to the edge is the quickest way to nullify the weak offensive line (which can’t run-block either), and gives our skill guys (Nelson, Cobb, Jones) a chance to beat one defender and gain yards. No reason they can’t do so by cutting back across the field.
The way I see it, Chicago’s defensive front 7 are way better than the depleted Packers offensive front seven. The only advantage GB has is WRs on DBs. Exploit that as often as possible.
I think Finley is gonna have a huge game (if he hangs on to the ball)

"Aaron Rodgers had his worst game of the year"
Just read this in SBNation’s latest power rankings.
Aaron Rodgers had his “worst” game of the year, but still threw a touchdown pass and had no turnovers.
The thing is, haven’t we now said that several weeks in a row? And I don’t really think the consecutive “worst games” have been AR’s fault. I think they come down to reversion to the mean on luck (he can’t be perfect with every pass, and the number of drops has increased) and the steady decline of the O-line. Started when Sitton got hurt, and it’s been getting worse week after week. Unless Clifton and Bulaga are back by playoff time, I fear this season is moving in the wrong direction. It’d be nice to have Bishop and Jennings back too. Remember that last year, the team was probably at its healthiest come playoff time.
At this time last year,
I fear this season is moving in the wrong direction.
our season was moving in the wrong direction, too, as we had just lost two straight (Lions and Patriots).
It wasn’t until Week 16 that we started to turn that around.
And, by playoff time last year,
last year, the team was probably at its healthiest come playoff time.we already had more than a dozen guys, including half a dozen starters, on IR (out gor the year), so, not sure what you are getting at there.

most of those injuries were early
The team that hit the playoffs had played together for several weeks, and it turned out that some of the backups (Shields, Bishop, maybe Zombo) were better than the guys they replaced. The receivers were all healthy. All three CBs (Shields, Williams, Woodson). Matthews. Clifton. Starks showed up and had a great playoffs. The backup TEs were contributing.

Momentum is the key
SB winners peak at the right time. Think about the Giants, and the Packers last year. We have to keep playing, and that means the O line must be addressed with something better than a guy who hasn’t played since 2008!! Where the hell is Mark Tauscher?! We are one and done if the O-Line and the pass rush is not addressed – now.
Then we're one and done

Well, not necessarily.
The two OLmen GB can pick up between now and Wk 2 of the playoffs are Clifton and Bulaga. They’ve already clinched a bye. They’d like HFA throughout, but more important than that is keeping Aaron Rodgers healthy. Do whatever it takes to keep him healthy, even if that means a low-risk-low-reward offense that leads to a 13-3 finish. Wk 2 of the playoffs is 4 weeks away. With luck, the starters will be back by then, and Newhouse can go back to being a backup. I wouldn’t rush Clifton or Bulaga back early to increase the chance of winning a regular-season game. Let them rest and heal. Same goes for Pickett and Bishop and Jennings. And I’d think seriously about resting Matthews for at least wk 17 as well.

No
And short arms aren’t the issue. Cliffy does not have the largest arms either (Bulaga and him have just about the same length at a tad over 33"), as long as your technique is fine, arm length does not matter, it just makes it harder. Joe Thomas and Jake Long both have arm lengths under 34’’.
But why would you take a possible pro bowl RT and switch him to LT? Bulaga has been a rock on the right side, keep him there. Put it this way, Bulaga can be an all pro RT, and a good LT. Sherrod has a chance to be an all pro LT, assuming his recovery goes fine, he is ready for training camp and OTA’s, and he continues to improve.
I hope your right...
Sherrod has a chance to be an all pro LT

Thanks, Chiefs, thanks a lot.
MattFlynn4StartingQB
Sherrod
He was a really good pick at the end of the 1st rd, but I don’t think he is going to be an All Pro at any point in his career. If he has a long career like Clifton he might make a few Pro Bowls, but All Pro? Just don’t see it… He has some good attributes to be sure and could become a quality starting LT, but he has too many deficiencies to really ever think he’ll be All Pro. My guess is he would have a career much like Clifton at his best.
Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!
I say All Pro
Due to his physical and mental attributes. He has a very good lateral movement, good size and arm length, and the ability to sink his hips (though he needs to do that better, and needs to play more aggressively). If he puts everything together, he could very easily be an all pro LT. Question is, can he put it all together and develop like the Packers think he can? Only time will tell.
And if he starts and plays well as Rodgers blindside protector, that will surely help his chance of being considered all pro.
He does have good lateral quickness and has the size and long arms. THe ability to sink his hips in part of his problem tho. He is too thin thru the hips and tends to play to upright. Which makes him particularly susceptible to bull rushes. He has to play w/ better pad level in order to minimize his relatively thin build in the hips and legs. There is no doubting he has the mental ability, but his toughness was called into question going into the draft and he never was a dominant run blocker. He is built to be a good pass blocker, and is good getting to the 2nd level, but he lacks the power of the elite LT
Comes off the ball too high and lacks the pad level and power…
Thats from cbs…
Heres my scouting report for Sherrod, using some info from CBS, NFL and watching what I could of him..
http://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2011/4/16/2115641/draft-prospect-5
Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!
From all the reports I did read
There were only 4 weakness common throughout them. They were that he was only a functional run blocker, needs to get stronger (particularly in the lower body), on occasion has balance issues (due to technique getting sloppy at times), and does not play with aggression or finish blocks. At least three of those weaknesses can be fixed with a good NFL training program and coach. Basically the same as you have said
I say all pro, because he will be playing on the premier offense of the NFL and protecting the premier QB in the NFL (assuming he starts at LT sometime soon in the future). If he develops and plays like he has the ability to, he can become as good a pass blocker as Joe Thomas or Jake Long. I doubt he will ever be a good run blocker, but I don’t think that will hurt his chances of being all pro too much.
No chance
Being as good as Thomas or Long. Those guys are and were dominant at every level of competition. Sherrod has a chance to be a good LT, but never be dominant. THe thin base of support isn’t likely to be something that can be fixed, it has alot to do w/ genetics and if you are thin in th legs, its very difficult to ever get really strong there. It affects his ability as a run blocker, as a pass rusher and possibly leads to him not being aggressive enough. THeres a reason Long and Thomas were drafted in the top 3 picks and Sherrod almost wasn’t a 1st round pick!
Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!
Alot more reasons than one
I said he can be as good a pass blocker as either one of them, and I stand by it. He has similar (although not as good) althetiscim and lateral quickness, but longer arms (which will help cover up for any deficiencies). I for one want to see how he looks in two years, after he has had time in an NFL off season program, some good OL coaching, and playing experience before we make any final judgments. And I would not be too worried about his aggression. As long as he sticks with his block, I don’t care if he pancakes the rusher and physically destroys him.
I guess Tom Brady never had a chance to be an all pro because he was drafted in the 6th round and not in the top 3. Draft position does not have any affect on future potential, or else Driver could never be a great WR either. And I guess Rodgers is no where near as good as Alex Smith, seeing how Rodgers was the 24th pick and Smith was the 1st. I could go on and on with other names too. Seriously, just because someone was not drafted in the top 5 does not mean they cant be one of the best at their position. Get over yourself.
Tom Brady?
Yeah thats an original argument… ANd Rodgers was thought to be, if not the 1st overall pick, at least a Top 10 pick… Poor arguments both!
I know his strengths and weaknesses very well. All Pro LT are dominant in all aspects of the game. They don’t have trouble anchoring vs a power rush, they don’t have much difficulty finishing blocks… They generally dominate anyone they face and Shut them down! Sherrod isn’t that kinda athlete and his thin base is going to be an ongoing problem throught his career! Sorry you can’t see the forest for the trees. Too blinded by Packer loyalty to see his weaknesses. I’ve said he has a chance to have as good a career as Clifton, its not like I’m putting him down or critisizing the pick. But to think he is going to be the best LT in the NFL at any point in his career is pretty dellusional. Why don’t you try getting over yourself and get a little realistic!!!
Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!
Poor arguments?
Lol, think before you type. How about Terrell Owens in the third round, and the numerous other players that I don’t feel like mentioning. Players are not always drafted where they should be, the draft is a crab shoot. Your just sick of hearing Tom Brady because that argument works and is valid, and Rodgers lasted that long because the other teams thought he was not a franchise QB, and that there were other picks better than him. Otherwise 23 other teams would not have passed on him. Some positions are over drafted, causing prospects stock to rise. QB’s and LT’s are two of those positions. Just because a QB or LT was selected in the top 5, does not mean they were one of the 5 best talents either.
If Sherrod develops fully like he can, he will have no problem in the pass protection department. He does not have to finish his blocks, ie driving them into the turf, to shut someone down. He will be more than capable to keep them away from Rodgers, and severly limit pressures. As I mentioned before, I don’t think he will ever be a great run blocker, just a functional one. But what is today’s job for a LT? Its to PASS BLOCK. If he becomes one of the top pass protectors, which he can (sorry you can’t see that and admit your wrong), he will become a top candidate for the all pro team. Because playing on a possible “Dynasty” with the premier QB will gather a lot more attention than playing with the Browns or Dolphins for the foreseeable future.
And just because someone is not on the all pro team, does not mean they are not playing at an all pro level. I admitted his weakness plenty of times, sorry that you can’t read and comprehend the English language. But to think someone can’t overcome or compensate for their CURRENT weaknesses is just stupid. Because I guess if a draft prospect has certain weakness, they can never overcome it. Because Matthews did not have good arm placement and was not a LOS linebacker coming out of college, I guess he could not become all pro. How did Arian Foster make the all pro team when he was not even drafted? Good thing James Harrison left the NFL after going from team to team after being undrafted , because he will never be an all pro.
Have you ever thought that your initial analysis on a player could be wrong, or that they can become better than they are? The reason why so many people around here get into discussions with you is because you are blind to being objective, stubborn, and can’t admit to being wrong. Keep an open mind will you?

football does not build character, it reveals character.
Ask Yourself this...
How many ALL PRO LT have been drafted outside the top 1/2 of Round 1 in the past decade or more? I’m not saying he can’t improve, just that his ceiling isn’t nearly as high as Long or Thomas. Other positions are much more likely to have success outside the top 1/2 of the 1st round. LT is an exception for the most part. Your the one that stated ALL PRO on this thread. I’ve stated I can see him going to the Pro Bowl, but ALL PRO is another matter entirely! That is and has been my only problem w/ anything you said! If you get over the fact that you feel I’m putting him down, which I’m not, you’ll realize its highly unlikely he make ALL PRO. Alot of LT, actually almost ALL LT are very good to great Pass blockers. What seperates the very good one and the ALL PRO LT are that they dominate in every facet… They aren’t just functional at anything, they excel at all aspects of playing the game! Run blocking, Pass Blocking or anything else they are asked to do. Keep in mind there is only ONE (1) ALL PRO LT every year, as opposed to multiple Pro Bowl LT every year.
As a Strength and Conditioning Coach I can tell you that being thin in the hips and legs is a problem that isn’t corrected just by lifting alot of weights. Its genetics that decides that… Frame size and Muscle fiber type being the 2 most important factors. If your limited by genetics, there is only so much you can do to improve on it. That being the case, Sherrod is always going to be thin in the hips and have trouble w/ anchoring and playing w/ power. Like CBS stated in his profile, he’s top heavy, when being bottom heavy is preferred for a LT!

Actually
You are wrong about the one all pro LT every year. When they vote, they have a first team and a second team, and 2 LT’s can make the first or second team ballot. It has happened numerous times for the AP all pro team. And like I said, you can play at an all pro level, and not make the team. Does that really mean you are not an all pro talent?
As far as the past 11 years, Michael Roos (R2:41 , 2008), Matt Light (R2:48, 2007), Flozell Adams (R2:38 2007), and David Diehl (R5:160, 2008) all have been voted all pro and selected after the first round. I think there are a few more that were selected in the back half of the first, but I just looked for players taken after the first round. And I only looked at the AP all pro team.
As far as his strength goes, he does have longer arms than Long and Thomas (by about 2’’). Longer arms will help him cover up for some deficiencies caused by a lack of superb athleticism or ideal strength.
However, it seems like we both are set in our opinions. We can just agree to disagree, because we both have good, plausible arguments. So, good day sir!

keep in mind that All-Pro is much more significant than Pro Bowl
to be an All Pro he would have to be considered the single best left tackle in the NFL in a given season, which is a lot less likely than making a Pro Bowl, which he probably has a good shot at if he recovers well
football does not build character, it reveals character.
On the 2009 all pro team
Ryan Clady (R1:P12) made first team honors, and Michael Roos (R2:P41) made second team honors. Just showing that your typical top two are not the only people to make it, and a second round tackle can make it.
Something interesting here from PFF
“Part of what makes Aaron Rodgers 2011 so remarkable is the fact that no quarterback in the NFL has had more passes dropped than the 40 from the Green Bay receivers. The receiving corps chipped in with another five in this game…”
And for the Chiefs game, “Aaron Rodgers’ completion percentage was 48.6%, taking away the five drops, two throw aways and a spike, he was accurate on 68.8% of his passes.”
Having a big drop game like this should wake up the receivers, and they should be even more focused in practice. Their analysis should calm down any hysteria about how the team played. It was NOT a telling performance, just an off day due to injuries.
40 drops?
Wow…I didnt know it was that bad…especially coming form the best receiving corps in the league. Damn if only we played to our potential. We could go 50-0
"Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport."
I should mention that
Drops are a subjective analysis, just like tackles. Everybody will have their own number of drops, depending on what they grade are drops. By all accounts, Edgar Bennett has a very loose definition of drops, something like if it hits two of your hands, so his number is probably higher.
what other definition should there be? if it hits both of your hands you should have caught it

A few other ones
A QB could throw a pass in a bad location, making the receiver do a circus catch or reach way behind him for a pass. Laying out for a pass and getting two hands on it but not catching it probably does not count as a drop either by most standards. Similarly, making your receiver jump full extension into the air to snatch it, and having him drop it because of a huge hit may not be considered a drop either.
I know there are some tough catches like that, and I'm not arguing that a receiver should be accountable when he loses a ball from a huge blindside hit like you described
but I’m saying that, if I were a receiver, I’d be pissed at myself any time a ball hit both of my hands and I didn’t catch it, you know?

I think
If its within 3 feet of your chest and you don’t make the catch, then it is a drop or at least how it should be.

you have 3 foot arms?

Anyone who has a foot (even if there's 3) at the end of their arms probably isn't going to be a good WR.
