Donald Driver: 9,979 career receiving yards

That means that he is a mere 21 yards from wrapping up a nice Christmas present to Packers fans: 10,000 career yards. Could there be a better Christmas present than 21+ yards against the Bears in a sound drubbing of the Monsters of the Midway? He will be just the 36th person to have achieved the 10,000 yard mark. What's more, he will be only the 7th player to play his whole career with a single franchise & eclipse 10,000 rec yards:

Donald-driver-stands_medium

Star-divide

The others being:
Marvin Harrison: 14,580 (Ind Colts)
Steve Largent: 13,089 (Sea Seahawks)
Hines Ward*: 12,027 (Pit Steelers)
Michael Irvin: 11,904 (Dal Cowboys)
Reggie Wayne*: 11,529 (Ind Colts)
Steve Smith*: 10,183 (Car Panthers)

* are players who are still active, though I can't imagine Hines Ward playing in anything but Black & Gold.

In addition to the three active players on that list, there are only 3 active players who have more career yards:
Tony Gonzalez: 13,289 (KC Chiefs, Atl Falcons)
Derrick Mason: 12,061 (Ten Titans, Bal Ravens, NY Jets, Hou Texans)
Chad Ochocinco: 11,044 (Cin Bengals, NE Patriots)

Probably a long shot for the HOF

But he’s a shoo-in for the Packers HOF, which is the one he really cares about. What a career it’s been.

Hate to say it, but Driver will not be in the Canton HOF

His stats just aren’t there.

As I recall, Michael Irvin was regarded as a pretty marginal guy for the HOF, and he’s got 1844 more receiving yards, 6 more touchdowns, and two (perhaps shortly to be one) more rings than Driver. Irvin also did it in fewer seasons, and probably gets the benefit of the doubt for missing the tail-end of his career (he retired at age 33 because of a neck injury)

That sounds like

a great example of a long shot to me. :)

it’s a 99 yard TD that puts him over 10,000

highly unlikely, but that would be fun if it was a play where he broke like 4 tackles and scored!

Every time you want Donald Driver to retire, he does something utterly ridiculous

like that.

Such a crazy play! He’s an awesome dude too, he took a backseat to Nelson this year without a peep!

That is mine…actually it was first the missed FG to win the game for the Vikes followed by that play! I remember one of my friends getting IN MY FACE and telling me my team sucked and it was over and blah blah.

Lets just say he heard it from me after this play was done.

Yeah HOF to me...

means “dominant” at your position. Let’s not become like the MLB HOF where you have Pee Wee Reese and Phil Rizzuto in there.

Thank you for the good news on Driver and the accompanying pic. Tough to smile after seeing Sherrod’s leg getting destroyed on Sunday (the loss became secondary to me).

(Oh and “go Iowa” — let’s see who gets that reference :)

It's been on my mind all season...

Every game I watch, I’m hoping double D gets it. As far as receivers go, my all time favorite Packer and having him hit 10k on Christmas would be like hot Christmas on Christmas action.

Seems like the last thrree or four years

People have been clamoring about Driver retiring, or if TT would cut him. Specially after last years Super Bowl. I see him playing 2012, and barring serious injury he’ll probably wanna keep playing after that.

I believe he's already said he wants to play until he's 40

Don’t know if TT will keep him around through 2015, but I can definitely see him in green and gold next year.

I don’t know. I think if we win the SB, he goes out on top. He’s not a reg contributor, what else is he going to do with his career? He’d have his health, lots of money, 2 rings, great records and stats, etc. At some point you have to call it quits and go out on top…like Favre should have done! ;-)

I hate to think about this question

but having grown acclimated to TT’s management style, if Driver is determined to keep playing, I could see him leaving under amicable circumstances, just to suit up with a team that could conceivably need him, and lord knows there’s more than just a few out there (the Texans immediately come to mind – despite the record, no one really emerged as a reciever with Andre Johnson out… not with any consistency, anyway).

But facts is facts – I’m sure there’s already more than just a passing fancy with seeing Cobb start next year; it feels to me like that decision has already been made and what Donald does next year, with regard to retirement, is more up to him than anything else.

My hope? I’ll never object to Driver wanting to stay a Packer. Bottom line.

DD's made his cash

And he’s been a Packer his entire career. I think if TT called him into his office and asked him if he’d mind being traded, Driver may just opt for retirement, instead. He and Woodson both “get” what it means to be a Packer, and I have a hard time believing they’d want to play anywhere else.

OTOH, this is the pros – sentimentality often takes a back seat to cold, hard cash, so WTF do I know?

Why would he go to the Jaguars (where he’d immediately be the #1 WR), to play alongside Chastin West catching passes from Blaine Gabbert?

Who wouldn't want to play next to future HOFer Chastin West?

Damn, if only Driver had retired before this year, we could be watching the next Jerry Rice, Mr. Chastin West, every Sunday for the next 20 years!

Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.
