Early Mock Draft/NFL Draft

So, out of boredom I keep track of Mock Drafts through out the season. Currenlty going into Week 15 our first 3 rounds according to Walter Football is:

Round 1: Fletcher Cox, DE/DT, Mississippi State
Round 2: Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
Round 3: Aaron Henry, S, Wisconsin

Personally, I see us doing the following:

Round 1: Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska
Round 2: Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
Round 3: Matt Reynolds, OT, BYU

So what is your thoughts and feelings on how we should/will be using pick #32 in the NFL Draft?

I like the first one

As for the second, Lavonte David doesn’t really fit with us and is more of a 3rd rounder. He’s only around 225 lbs, so has to play inside but Hawk and Bishop are already there, and Smith looks like an awesome backup. Just think…Smith looks a bit small to me out there, and David is 15 lbs slimmer.

I like Lewis, he’s good for 3-4 OLB. I like both Henry and Reynolds, so Cox over david is the reason I prefer the 1st over the 2nd.

Montee Ball for Heisman.
Tajh Boyd and Dre' Ellington are the future.

I can't see us going T as early as the 3rd.

Interior lineman, maybe, but we’re pretty set at T (2 consecutive 1st rd T; a young competent swing tackle in reserve).

DL/OLB are definitely the primary needs, so either draft sounds good in principle (not really sure of the specific players). I would take a S over a T in the 3rd, for sure.

True

Another player I played around with was Ray Ray Armstrong from Miami in the 3rd Round.

Reason I went with a T was Clifton is getting ready to retire, eventually. Bulaga and Sherrod are the futures but just some extra depth on the offensive line so we don’t have to deal with what we dealt with last and and this year.

Injuries on the OL happen, unfortunately

No teams keep 10+ OL on the roster. What we need to do is draft an interior lineman in the early rounds, and TJ Lang can be the 3rd G/5th T & we can the upgrade the staring LG.

Sherrod’s done for the year, and Bulaga went out, both 1st rounders. Newhouse is only in his 2nd year, and while he hasn’t been great, it’s been marginally adequate enough for a swing T.

OT

I would be ok with an OT in the 3rd Round if he’s capable of playing OG. It’ll be much more difficult for an OG to play OT, so an OT provides more versatility. For example: Bulaga, Sherrod, and Newhouse all have experience at OG, and can play there if need be. However, Lang is our only OG that can switch to OT. If we draft an interior lineman early, he needs to be able to play Center. If he can only play OG, then we probably won’t touch him.

I don’t think Lang played bad enough to warrant being replaced. He hasn’t been spectacular by any means, but he has been solid. Certainly there are better OG’s in the league, but we simply have bigger needs elsewhere.

I agree with the first two sentences, but not the last.

What are the bigger needs? OLB? Absolutely? DL? Sure. After that, I have a hard time putting another position above G. S, maybe, if Collins’ career is over, but other than that?

Center, Safety, and Cornerback

Center- There’s no guarantee that Wells is coming back next year, and even if he does, he’s going on the wrong side of 30.

Safety- As you said, Collins injury could be over. If he does return though, we can scratch this off the list.

Cornerback- Exactly how old is Charles Woodson again? What do we plan on doing…waiting for him to get injured before we realize our CB situation isn’t so good anymore? Bush has made nice progress this year, but he doesn’t have the ceiling that Williams and Shields have. With that said, Shields has regressed this year.

So, DE, OLB, CB, C, and S are 5 positions we could use early in the draft before picking an OG. I think OLB and DE are the ultimate priorities in the 1st Round though. I don’t think an OG drafted in the 3rd Round or later will be an upgrade over Lang.

I meant a C/G, not a G only.

S, I think, will not be a priority, as I expect Collins to return. CB is debatable, I guess, but we do have 3 top-flight CBs, and Woodson is having a DPOY-caliber season again. Should we draft a QB in the first round because Rodgers could get injured?

QB.

We just can’t keep relying on a guy who doesn’t have fourth quarter comebacks and can’t win playoff games.

We're pretty sure

We’re going to be picking from 28 to 32, unless we get upset in the first game but then we’re still picking like 26 or 27th. And obviously this guy is confident (as am I) that we’ll be picking 32nd. But either way, most of the same guys who are avaiable at #28 will still be available at #32. I honestly don’t think a single guy in this post will go in 1st round, except maybe Cox.

There's really only a few possibilities

Since I think it’s almost a given they’re the #1 overall at this point:
#26: if they were to pull a ’10 Patriots (1st round bye: one & done)
#30: if they were to pull a Rex Ryan (lose the conference championship game)
#31: if they were to pull a ’85, ’96, ’07 Patriots (lose the Super Bowl)
#32: if they were to pull a ’66, ’67, ’96, ’10 Packers (win the Super Bowl).

I wouldn't mind Aaron Henry at 96th overall.

The kid’s an explosive playmaker, and he has 4 defensive touchdowns over the course of his career (3 in the 2010 season).

I say we take Nick Perry

great rush guy from the opposite side to help out the Claymaker

by StevieV17 on Dec 24, 2011 8:03 PM CST reply actions

He would be my first choice

He seems like he might be as close to being a ready made 34 OLB as there is in the draft. Has the ideal size and athleticism, for a 34 OLB. Don’t know if he’s dropped into coverage much, but I would worry about teaching him that later. If he can rush the QB, and has the athleticism to play in space, he would be the best pick. I would go so far as to say trade up 10 spots to get him! Excellent counterpart for Matthews!

by Strohman on Dec 24, 2011 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

W. Mercilus from Illinois would be my choice. 6’4 265, runs a 4.68. Led nation in sacks (14.5) and forced fumbles (9).
Perry is also a good option though. 6’3 250, runs a 4.64. Perry is probably a little more athletic and will probably be gone by 32. Had 9.5 sacks this year.

My choices would be
Rd 1) Mercilus
Rd 2) Markelle Martin S Okla ST (Only if Collins is done. 5 technique DL if Collins is back)
Rd 3) LaMicheal James

Mercilus is a good player too

and i agree with most of your projected choices except for James. i love him as a player but i feel there’s more pressing needs than a running back

by StevieV17 on Dec 29, 2011 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

yeah

i agree with what you said, Strohman. and, in the mocks i’ve seen, TT might need to trade up to get him due to the fact that he’s been going as early as the pick the jets will have. i feel getting him though is definately necessary. that would definately alleviate the pressure on the secondary and possibly make them even tougher (and, who knows….maybe some more picks)

by StevieV17 on Dec 29, 2011 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I’ve been on the Nick Perry bandwagon for awhile now. People say he’s not a 1st Rounder, but I think after his pro day and teh combine he will be worthy of a 1st round choice. He is Clay Matthews, but only more athletic.

by SoCal19 on Dec 30, 2011 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

I would say

He’s similar to Matthews only not quite as athletic. Matthews, IIRC, did really well in the quickness drills at the combine, and I’ve read that Perry is a little stiff in the hips. We’ll see how he does at the combine… Packers had Matthews rated as about the #12 overall pick in that draft, so even if he’s only the 25-30 ranked player, he would still be a good pick.

by Strohman on Dec 30, 2011 6:38 PM CST up reply actions

TT

Always seems to find that guy under the radar. Fletcher Cox fits but I’m hoping Jerel Worthy declares and falls, otherwise Brandon Thompson might be there, if they go outside rush LB to compliment Matthews I hoping for Donta Hightower.

by glblank on Dec 25, 2011 12:18 PM CST reply actions

Hightower

Is a 34 ILB… WOuld play Hawks position and if you think Hawk is slow, Hightower runs about a 4.8 40. He doesn’t have the speed or explosiveness to play OLB. Probably why Alabama uses him inside.

Don’t know much about Thompson, but Worthy is mostly a run stuffing player and if we draft a DE/DT we need one that can rush the passer.

Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!

I'm still convinced

that we should take Cornelius McFuggletith, real bulky DE who fits the 3-4 real nicely

He plays at Schenectady State… real sleeper. A bit of a reach for a 1st rounder, but what the heck.

2nd round: William Zimphradotus, OLB. No way I’m passing him up.

3rd round: Jelkius Moonfetters, CB. His workout videos really impress me.

Looking forward to the Packers three-peating and visiting President Ron Paul at the White House in 2013
