APC Open Thread #29: YOU CHLOROFORMED A JANITOR?!

Hello, football fans, and welcome to the 24-hour APC Open Thread! Feel free to discuss Many thanks to Brandon for allowing this silliness.

There are other Open Threads around SBN. Feel free to drop by any of them.

Battle Red Blog, home of the AFC South Eternal Threads. Very welcoming group of people, with quite the mix of Colts, Texans, and the occasional Jags fan. Disgust for the Titans is extremely welcome.

Niners Nation, home of the San Francisco 49ers...

Pride of Detroit Community Open Threads. Division Rivals the Detroit Lions may be, BUT their fanbase is a good group of people. Respect them, and they should respect you.

Bleeding Green Nation's OTs.

A bit new to the game, but still there: Revenge of the Birds OTs

Canal Street Chronicles, getting in on the OT action as well

Rules of the thread:

NO POLITICS

NO RELIGION

NO THREATS

NO NAME-CALLING OTHER POSTERS ON THIS BLOG. There w ill be other people who stop by this thread. Yes, this is a Packers blog. Please refrain from trolling others, even virulent fans of rival teams. If you want a trash-talk thread (like the one we had in the Super Bowl), I can make one.

Absolutely NO SAYING YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON TO POST

Since we've had a little...issue...with people posting NSFW pictures, please keep in mind that some people might well read this thread at work. If you're going to post a picture that might be considered Not Safe For Work in any way, shape, or form, post a link to it instead of embedding it in the comment. That way, nobody gets in trouble.

Please remember that any time you spend on the APCOT's is entirely voluntary. Nobody is forcing you to be here.

If you were one of the people who rec'd the previous open thread to move it to the Recommended FanPosts section, please go back to that previous thread now and un-rec it. That way, the previous thread will move out of that section, and these won't be cluttering APC as much.

With those rules in mind, have fun.

Eh, 1998 was a sign of things to come in subsequent years

By that, QB4 throwing gut-wrenching INTs to set up opposing TDs in the playoffs. The 1998 team also didn’t have the killer instincts of the 1996 and 1997 teams (footnote, the 1997 Packers lost to a REALLY BAD Indianapolis team in the regular season. Like #1 pick-worthy REALLY BAD).

Not really, but they are part of it.

That franchise has a laundry list of issues, not the least of which is the fact that it is designed to prevent the community for evolving. They designed it to hold your hand and help beginners so they don’t cry their little baby tears, and I get that they want new players to have fun too, but it shouldn’t be done in a way that discourages any effort to get better, nor should it be at the detriment of those who have paid their dues. I mean, it’s a multiplayer game that has auto-aim that will actually drag the reticule after the target that you’re too incompetent to follow on your own, because it needs to be fun for comatose toddlers too. As if it weren’t dumbed down enough already though, Modern Warfare 3 decided that there needed to implement a kill streak that rewarded players for not…streaking…kills? I mean honestly, how can someone be rewarded with being transformed into the guy from the Hurt Locker by sprinkling 30 deaths into the epileptic mess of an 18 kill train wreck of a game that they seized themselves into?

Funny thing on that one

The cameras obviously concentrated on the ball, so I had no idea what the receivers were doing. I saw that O-Line pull and Rodgers go on that beautiful PA and begin his rollout, and I turned to the wife and I giddily said, “I love this play!”

Then he released it :D

If only Ted Thomson would trade for Joe Thomas…
I swear I have dreams about them getting the big Wisconsin guy and Rodgers never getting sacked. But of course, knowing Thomson, that will NEVER in a million years happen.
As good as he is at finding and developing excellent players through the draft, it has been immensely disappointing as a fan (and shareholder) to see the Packers’ brass incessantly refuse to pickup good players via the trade market.
I’m sure a lot of guys around the NFL would love to come play for the Pack (especially if they repeat), but they will probably never be given that opportunity to, thanks to Teddy’s stubbornness…

Dom Capers’ job may be on the line the way the defense has played this year. The offense has been doing most of the work and that is not good. Both sides of the line need to play well for success to continue.

Lazy logo design

I don’t know if this is the actual official logo for Super Bowl XLVI, but every time the upcoming super bowl is mentioned on TV or online, this is the logo that is shown:

Seriously? It’s just the SB XLV logo, with a more “with it” numeral added to the end and Lucas Oil stadium in the background. Talk about lazy graphic design.

Bingo

That works with jeans, sometimes, but if you’re wearing slacks or above, match socks to shirt, instead. Very simple, gentlemen: belt-shoes, shirt-socks, pants-jacket (optional, assuming you can keep it below Craig Sager levels of idiocy). And ties should complement the upper half of the clothing with specifically matching anything, unless you’re wearing a cummerbund for whatever reason.

I disagree

Your tip to match socks to shirt is straight out of the 80’s, which references the fucking 50’s. That’s fine if you want to look like you belong in one of those eras. If you want to look like you belong in modern society, you should do just what this tip suggests: match your socks to your pants. The only exception would be if you are one of those quirky, dare-to-be-different guys (and you really need to be over 50 to even begin to pull it off) who wears red socks with everything.

by Ben T on Dec 29, 2011 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

Classic looks are classic for a reason

And wearing tan socks with tan slacks looks weird to me – it’s almost begging people to stare at your shoes. If you have really pimp shoes, this is a great idea. If you’re like a majority of the guys out there that wear the same shoes until there’s a hole in ‘em and then you buy a new version, then it makes no sense to draw attention to the fact. Besides, that’s just boring – if your pants are cut to the correct length, a flash of different color down there draws interest where none may have existed before.

Of course, I eschew socks until the temp drops below zero (or there’s significant snow/ice on the ground), anyway – never saw much point in ’em unless I was planning on running somewhere.

by Clutch16 on Dec 29, 2011 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

Fashion is art, not science...

…so everybody should wear what they prefer. It would seem to me that a “flash of color” will have people starting at your shoes quicker than something that blends with your pants. Here is a link to a website (very poorly designed) by the guy you wrote the so-called Encyclopedia of Men’s Clothes. He clearly gives “classic” fashion advice, and you can read his answer regarding sock color.

by Ben T on Dec 29, 2011 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

I definitely agree

But I’ll put it this way – when I have worn socks and I matched my shirt color, I had a lot more strippers tell me I was cute than when I matched my pants.

But just to revisit your point about the “fucking 50s”. A dude dressed in the below clothing is in no way considered drool-worthy by chix?

Aaaand that may be the origin of that advice – the question asked on your linked site is “should socks match shoes or trousers?” and I agree unequivocally that if that’s the choice presented, definitely go with the pants. Please, for the love of all you hold holy, do not put on white socks to match your white shirt, unless you’re in the aforementioned “IDGAF, I’m over 50” demographic. I almost never wear white shirts, however, so I have the option to match my socks to them if I so desire .

Whatever gets you attention from strippers,

by all means. I am pretty confident that chix would drool over that guy even if he was dressed in a burlap sack. But, you’re right, there is nothing at all wrong with his clothes. It’s pretty funny that we can’t see his socks in that photo, but based on your nowhitesocks (sound advice, hopefully obvious to all) I guess we can agree that they probably match his suit.

I don’t think the guy on the site was answering the question strictly based on the choice presented. Based on his answer, it seem clear he was providing a complete answer as if the question was open-ended.

Still considering the young demographic, the bold is easily the most completely missed fashion sense. Really doesn’t matter what your slacks/pants/jeans are, still see people wearing the black belt with brown shoes or vice versa. Pretty basic concept when dealing with basic fashion.

But I agree a bit more with Ben T that the modern fashion suggests that socks should be on the same color palette as the legwear. But both practices are very acceptable in a business and formal setting.

The main point I like is getting items tailored. Not only does it promote style and looks better, but it also promotes longevity for those worried about costs. Just getting something tailored will allow someone to wear that article much longer.

And for outerwear,

I've pulled off a trenchcoat, but it was a dark green and not the classic tan

Hated losing that coat.

To me, cardigans just say, “My mother still dresses me, or I wish she would”

To tie in your advice with Clutch's above, from my own experience:

I was always taught to match Trousers to socks, belt to shoes, and tie to some color scheme on the torso (even if its just slightly present, for example a touch of purple in a tie and a purple dress shirt or something) and trenchcoats work fine if you are in busines atire in the proper climate but I went with a black one to match darker suits. I never really saw people wearing tan ones for any reason since it didn’t really go with anything.

Then again, I was taught to dress within a dress code and not necessarily to be “expressive”.

I'm with you there

But I’ve got a very basic body-shape. Off the rack usually looks good on me. My major issue with tailoring as I get out of the “young male” demographic is accruing/shedding weight. I’ve had stuff tailored for fat me that had to be brought in for skinny me later on, which then becomes unwearable after I put on a few more pounds. When I’m in the right weight range, it looks good, but maintaining weight hasn’t been my strong suit (heh) for the past few years.

I’ve found a few good clothing stores which offer free tailoring for the life of the garment, so that’s an option right there.

lol

I’ve had the same problem as I’ve gotten older. But I guess it’s just made me always want to stay thin enough to fit into my clothes.

That and I hate the inconvenience of getting stuff tailored.

I did swimming and baseball, which require completely different body types. From season to season, my body could shift weight 35-40 pounds based on how I lifted and bulked. My aunt is a professional seamstress/tailor, so she mad all my clothes look amazing for formal and awards banquets.

I'm a little leary of the "skinny khakis" advice.

In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “skinny” khaki but maybe I just assumed they weren’t the right size.

I would never wear a cardigan, but I would probably replace that with certain types of classier sweaters that I do wear.

Otherwise it all looks pretty good. Any idea what this is actually from? The last line makes me think it’s not just general advice. Who are they advising here?

The advice seems like it is meant for the urban, big city looks.

My line of work would not cater to this. Need to have business attire and be aware that overdressing would give off a very unprofessional and pretty much the wrong message.

Agree with cardigans and skinny khaki.

That’s per capita per drinker, bud. And the difference between the average drinker in Chicago and the average drinker in Boston in February is stark. Chicago definitely makes it up between May and September, though. Most of Boston’s binge drinkers are back in CT/NH/VT/ME then – Chicago people stick around to enjoy…everything the city offers.

Tucson has drinkers, but you get drunker in Flagstaff, AZ (due to the elevation). Denver is like this, too, but Flagstaff is even higher than Denver.

I had fun drinking in Tucson

though, there was more than just drinks at the party…

I’ll list the cities I assume you’re talking about:
Cleveland: drunk at a wedding on the shores of Lake Erie.
Las Vegas: I fucking hate that place.
Charleston: fun city, but very “old South” if you know what I mean.
San Antonio: yeah, it really does suck there, ergo, drink until you forget you’re stuck in San Antonio. Quite the downer after partying 8 days straight in Austin.

Also, I just realized one of the most fun places I’ve been drunk in is not on this list: New Orleans
I don’t give a shit about per capita binge drinkers or whatever, that’s an awesome place to drink, because you can do it ANYWHERE you want. The sick joke is that there’s no public restrooms, though.

I liked Vegas, but really only for the sports gambling

I watched an NBA Finals game at the sports book in the Venetian, and it was what I imagined the sports bar in heaven would be like: huge screens, free drinks, and anytime I wanted, I could just walk up to the window and place a bet. I put down 5 wagers on that stuff in that game beforehand and another 3 or 4 during. Won most of them, so I walked out of there a happy camper.

I never had any reason to go anywhere in South Carolina, so I didn’t. And the only time I’ve been in San Antonio, I was 16 – I don’t think they’d have let me hit the bars on the Riverwalk.

But, yeah – no thanks to Cleveland, Tucson or Denver. I’ve spent a little bit of time in Denver and came away less than impressed.

Charleston was a lot nicer than I expected.

Denver is pretty blah, agreed, although the chicks I stayed with there were pretty cool. The city itself offers little (I couldn’t even tour the mint because it was booked up).

Cleveland has the Rock & Roll HOF which is pretty cool, and it’s not far from Canton (Pro Football HOF), which is a must see. Still, if someone lived their whole life & never once went to Cleveland; it’s not a completely wasted life.

Aaron Rodgers's season has been absolutely amazing.

Now that I’ve said that, we’re probably going to lose 35-13 to the Detroit Lions with Rodgers having to be pulled after throwing multiple interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Wait, wrong QB. The other guy would have done that.

I'd say this is the case

I know we complain about the running game, but the fact is that I would still take Starks + Grant over Hillis and nobody else. At least Starks + Grant have managed 1,089 yards on 4.2 YPC between them. Hillis has been horribly inefficient all year long.

So I was sitting around wondering how Vic Ketchman got the job writing for packers.com...

how the team picked him, whether he was recruited as a journalist by other teams, why Jacksonville let him go, etc.

I still don’t know the answer to any of these questions, but I did find the answer to one question in one of his responses. The question: Why doesn’t he write for the Vikings?

The answer is in this Q&A exchange:

Frank from Ithaca, NY

I was watching the "10 Most Controversial Calls" on NFL Network the other day and one of the top ones (as well as the Immaculate Reception) was the 1979 AFC Championship game at Three Rivers when Dan Pastorini throws a would-be TD pass to Mike Renfro in the back of the end zone, only to be ruled incomplete by the officials, much to the dismay of Bum Phillips. Replay clearly shows both of Renfro’s feet were in bounds. Unfortunately for Houston, replay was not used by officials at that time. I immediately thought of you and how you must have been there. What are your memories of that play?

My fondest memory of that play is what happened a week-and-a-half later, at the Super Bowl, when the league announced that the right call was made; video from a camera angle in the upper deck above Renfro showed the ball moving between Renfro’s hands and chest as he went out of bounds. At that point, Bum Phillips, who is one of my all-time favorite coaches, said something I’ll never forget. He said, in effect, we didn’t complain about it then, so I don’t like having it rubbed in our face now. That’s my idea of what it means to be a pro. I remember writing a column from the Super Bowl that supported Phillips’ statement. The Oilers never complained about the call, so why did the league feel compelled to defend it? I think we’ve gone way over the line in evaluating officials’ calls. I prefer a more manly approach to disappointment.

Obviously, the Q is first and Vic’s response in bold for those of you unfamiliar.

Question about Matt Flynn, if anyone can answer.

Is he tradeable? I know he’s a Free agent, but my dad said he’s not a FA until March, so technically he could be traded in February to a team he’d be williing to sign an extension with. A team might want to do that if they want to make sure they get him rather than throwing enough money at him in free agency. It sounds a bit sketchy though because the trade deadline already passes, but I don’t know if the deadling applis AFTER the season is over. BTW wow what a frikin performance, that was incredible.

by BlackPack-fan on Jan 1, 2012 11:37 PM CST reply actions

I think he becomes a FA immediately at the end of the SB

There is a period of time where the Packers have exclusive negotiating rights to him, after which (if he doesn’t re-sign) he becomes an unrestricted FA.

The only way that we could trade Flynn is to apply the franchise (or transitional) tag on him, which would give us the rights to him for the upcoming season.

Build Lasers And Stuff For More Ownage, Dude!

by Wiedmann on Jan 2, 2012 12:10 AM CST up reply actions

OK I see.

I guess then the Packers would have to decide whether they want to use the tag on him or someone else, probably Finley. But if Finley was willing to resign, then I think maybe we should use the tag on Flynn so we can trade him. If the Eagles got a 2nd rd pick and a top tier Corner (Rodgers-Cromartie) for Kolb and the Bengals got two 1sts for Palmer, we could probably get a 1st and 2nd for Flynn.

Not sure if that’s actually a viable option, because franchise tagging is one of the few things I don’t really get in football.

Vic covered it today
Garrett from Austin, TX

Vic, I can’t remember where I heard this, but I thought somebody in the media mentioned we may still be able to trade Matt Flynn just before free agency starts. I feel as though this statement is completely erroneous so I thought I would ask.

Free agency and trading begin at the same time, so Flynn would become a free agent before the Packers can trade him. The only ways to retain trade rights to him would be to do a new contract with him or franchise him before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. A new contract would be very expensive and franchising Flynn would be risky. He could sign the tender and then fail to agree to contract terms with a team interested in trading for him, which means the Packers would be on the hook for the franchise fee.

And then:
Shawn from Bowler, WI

I felt that after the New England game last year that we should have traded Flynn for draft picks. At the beginning of this year, some said Flynn was one of the top three backups that should be starting somewhere. Are we allowed any compensation if he leaves the team with a new contract?

If they had traded him, they would’ve been inviting injury to Rodgers. You know how that goes; it has to do with some kind of law about what you can’t afford happening always seeming to happen. As it stands today, if Rodgers should get something in his eye in a playoff game, the Packers can plug in Flynn and not expect to miss a beat. Jeff Hostetler won the Giants a Super Bowl, right? There will be compensation for Flynn and it’ll be strong. I think we’re forgetting a cardinal rule of the salary cap era: You must be willing to let players go. You can’t keep everybody; the cap won’t allow it. Sometimes friends move away and all you can do is wish them well and miss them.

The difference there was they were unsure of Brady’s return from ACL surgery before free agency began. If they had been certain that Brady was going to be back, they probably wouldn’t have hedged their bets by franchising Cassel.

Its actually against NFL rules

You can’t “franchise” a player with the intent of trading them away. But the Patriots did it most recently and it has happened in the past. NFL tends to shy away from enforcing the rule.

But since its the Packers, expect the NFL to crack down on them.

It's normally on in the afternoon around the same time; maybe it was an hour early this year

Since ESPN got the rights to the BCS last year, nearly every bowl is on the 4 letter network. There were exactly 4 bowls on broadcast TV this year (two of which overlapped): Sun, Liberty, Hall of Fame (Outback), & Cotton. None of the BCS bowls are on broadcast television, not even the National Championship game. It’s not like the rights prevented that, either, as Disney owns both ABC & ESPN, but, I suppose a new episode of “The Bachelor” was much more important to show than the National Championship game….

Of course it has to be my stock certificate. So I excitedly open it. And sure enough it is. After reading the accompanied letter, I open it up to admire it, and what do you know? They fucked up my order! I got some guy’s stock from Iowa! Bullshit! So now I’ve gotta send it back and wait a couple more weeks for mine :-/

Unfortunately, these two things are probably good for the Bears. However, this transition won’t be completely seamless, so it could take awhile for the “good” to show up.

The defense of Cutler for his first couple of years at QB there

Was that he didn’t have continuity at OC and had to learn too many different systems. Looking at his performance this year, that may have been a good point – he seemed to have found a groove with Martz and they installed an offense that was more balanced to the Bears’ strengths. Looks like Cutler gets to go back to the drawing board for another season, but it’s one where they’ll be facing a pretty soft schedule. They may be able to challenge for the playoffs next year even with a new OC calling the shots.

Possible scenario for Indy

If the doctors clear Manning, and he can return and play effectively for another 2 years, how about this scenario. Trade the #1 pick for two 1sts and one 2nd or 3rd round pick, and use those to get some impact players. And with the first pick in the second round, draft Ryan Tannehil from A&M? The kid is still very early in his development, has a great arm, and is athletic. He would benefit greatly by sitting for a few years and learning how to be a better QB from Manning, and Manning and the Colts would not pressured to play him (seeing as he is not the #1 pick).
