Pro Bowl roster released, 7 Packers included

First, I dare the commenters on this fanpost not to say "Yeah but it doesn't matter because we won't be playing anyway we'll be in the Superbowl!" - Try to contain yourselves Obvious Ottos - we all want to play in the Superbowl this year.

Moving on, there were 7 players from the Packers who made the Pro Bowl squad:

Star-divide

Asterisks imply starters:

Offense:

Quarterback: *Aaron Rodgers

Fullback: *John Kuhn

Wide Receiver: Greg Jennings

Center: Scott Wells

Defense:

Defensive Tackle: B.J. Raji

Outside Linebacker: *Clay Matthews

Cornerback: Charles Woodson

Now, we can talk about snubs forever, but I think the only somewhat apparent one is that the player who is #3 in the NFL in TD receptions (#2 among Wide Receivers) as well as being #3 in the NFL in YPC wasn't voted in - that player being Jordy Nelson of course. Other than that, there's our Packers Pro-Bowlers.

Good Haul

I think Jordy deserves to be there more than Jennings but no worries. I think Sitton, Lang, Bulaga, FInley and Burnett all deserved a spot BUT I am content.

Sorry but I gotta disagree

Sitton should have made it last year . . . but not this year. Finley – no . . . no, no. Not this year.

And Jordy Nelson over Greg Jennings? Absolutamente no!

4/5 out our lineman? No...

And Finley? He’s gotta have almost as many drops as receptions.

by Charlie Kelly on Dec 28, 2011 8:46 AM CST up reply actions

Finley? Heck no!
Sitton? Not a good year, no
Burnett? Probably better options, not a snub on him, he might get there one day…remember when some in here didn’t even think he should be given the chance for the starting job in the preseason.

Jordy though most definitely doesn’t deserve to be in the ahead of Jennings.

Congrats to those 7 Packers

And I hope to see none of them in it this year.

Nelson among alternates

Kicker Mason Crosby is a first alternate, while six other Packers are also on the alternate list: tight end Jermichael Finley, kick-returner Randall Cobb, receiver Jordy Nelson, linebacker Desmond Bishop, guard Josh Sitton and cornerback Tramon Williams.

before the season i really thought finley would make the team.

but this year has been the jimmy graham story at tight end. i don’t know that finley will ever reach that level. not that we need him to be that dominant, but graham is like a man among boys out there a good part of the time.

Yet another year why we are told the Pro Bowl is a joke

I like Kuhn as the rest of you do, but there’s no way one can justify him making it over Jordy Nelson. Heck, even BJ Raji. Raji deserved it last year, but not this year. Oh well. Congrats to those Packers that made it. That’s what happens when you play for a successful team.

This year was simply phenomonal, in my opinion. Im happy for the team, tho…

Ok...one more, then we've gotta go...

Those are all different positions, none of them affect each other.

Kuhn plays at a dying position with little competition. He’s among the best in the league at his position. Period.

Which of the four WRs are you pulling to stick our #2 WR in the pro bowl?
Calvin? Hell no
Fitz? Not a chance
Jennings? Nope
Smith? You could make an argument here, but he’s been doing what he does for a lot longer on a FAR less talented team. Jordy is right where he belongs, an alternate.

I have to agree, though I’d love to see Jordy make the Pro Bowl. Basically, he is 2nd to 3rd team all-NFC.

Raji

He strictly made it on the TD he had last playoffs that is still stuck in peoples minds. He definitely did not have a pro bowl type season. Hope he turns it on in the playoffs.

by tmoneyttime1 on Dec 27, 2011 9:12 PM CST reply actions

Hard to have those kinds of numbers again when you’re getting double teamed every play. He’s still had a good season, he just doesn’t have the sack numbers because he doesn’t have a guy like Jenkins lined up next to him anymore.

Yeah, people keep ragging on Raji

I see a man doing his job, and occasionally making a good play.

he's also been getting a lot fewer plays off this year

which means he’s a lot less fresh most of the time he’s in there

Wow, I thought he had a lot last year.

No...

Early in the year he was getting as many snaps or slightly more, but since the bye week or so, he’s only playing about 70% of snaps as opposed to the 90% he had been getting. JSOnline had an article about that sometime about a month or 6 weeks ago.

Stafford and Romo were both more deserving than Eli

Eli has had a hell of a season too though. The top 5 QBs in the NFC are better than all but one AFC QB this season.

by sheehan on Dec 27, 2011 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

Stafford had a better season than Manning

It’s pretty close, though.
Stafford: 385/604 (63.7%); 4518; 36 TD/14 int; 7.5 ypa; 96.6 rating
Manning: 335/556 (60.3%); 4587; 26 TD/16 int; 8.3 ypa; 90.3 rating
Manning has him beat on yards (barely) & ypa (handily). What really sticks out is the TD/INT, where Stafford crushes Manning.

Cam Newton was much more deserving than Eli. His passing numbers are pretty comparable:
Newton: 295/492 (60.0%); 3893; 20 TD/16 int; 7.9 ypa; 85.0 rating
and his rushing stats are off the charts:
120 att; 674; 14 TDs; 5.6 ypc

Romo had a pretty good season, too; better than Manning also.
Romo: 317/485 (65.4%); 3895; 29 TD/9 int; 8.0 ypa; 102.2 rating

Here’s what it was:
1. Rodgers
2. Brees
3. Manning
4. Newton
5. Stafford
Here’s what it should be:
1. Rodgers
2. Brees
3. Newton
4. Romo
5. Stafford

I don’t think the comparison is really all that close.

Stafford beat him at basically every important stat and has his team already in the playoffs…the only reason Eli beat him is due to him being in New York.

I put a lot of stock in ypa

That’s why I think it’s as close as it is. Either way, Staff is more deserving than Fetushead, Jr.

Agreed on East Coast bias.

I don’t think that there is such a great East Coast bias as you think. Manning made it because of past success and a good year this year that is comparable to Stafford and Romo.

I do think it probably had more to do with his last name than the city he plays in

Though, being in the largest media market certainly helped.

Oh I think there is def. east coast bias…early season success probably helped Eli too since people insisted his above average season against poor opponents was “MVP worthy”

YPA is probably the most important of those stats, and it's the one where Eli beats him

but Stafford beats him in all the others, so it really gets outweighed.

No idea.

He was such a big name in the NFCCG, which is where he probably got all the votes. His production this year doesn’t warrant a Pro Bowl berth thogh.

but seriously

look at the WRs going from the NFC, Jennings or Nelson could have gone, but there wasn’t room for both. Hell, you can even make a case for Cruz over Jennings or Nelson (I wouldn’t, but you could)

I'm not surprised

Peterson returned more for TDs than Hester, and there was one that cinched the game (99-yard punt return in OT vs. Rams), and another that was the go-ahead score (89-yard punt return for TD vs. Car). A little strange considering how much “name recognition” goes into these selections, but he certainly is at worst as deserving as Hester.

Peterson only played as a punt returner, though

He hasn’t returned kickoffs all season. As a punt returner, Peterson has done better than Hester. But punt and kick returns? That really should’ve gone to Hester.

by DaveInTucson on Dec 28, 2011 12:42 AM CST up reply actions

He only returned punts

and still had more return TDs than Hester, who returned both kickoffs & punts.

Luckily for Hester...

Peterson started to come into his own as a corner this year and that will be his main spot in the future. They shouldn’t risk him because he has more value to the team than anything he can do on ST, much like Tramon…

the same can’t be said for Hester, so his records shouldn’t be in jeopardy.
