How should the Packers handle the QB situation on Sunday?

Hey everyone, this is an idea I have been tossing around in my head the last few days and I thought I would share it with the rest of you. As you know, the Packers have clinched the home field advantage. With that clinching the Packers have bought themselves three weeks of being able to take a step back, get healthy, think about things, maybe change a few things, and figure out how to get a PASS RUSH. This is particular post is about the QB situation. There are many different ways the Packers could play this this Sunday. They could start Rodgers and try to win. They could do a bunch of other things as well.

So, what should the Packers do with their QB situation on Sunday?

Let me know what you think.

Funny how you conveniently forget

That a Packers special teamer was ejected from the game before Suh’s stomp, not to mention the story that broke out of Seattle about the shoe untying.

Jerry Glanville said long ago, if the Packers are not cheating they aint trying. Any team in the NFL at various points in various seasons could be labelled and called dirty. Yours too.

Right, that's why multiple players from multiple teams have called the Packers out on it...

What’s that? They haven’t? Oh, that’s right… it’s YOUR team being called dirty.

..not to mention the story that broke out of Seattle about the shoe untying.

Hahaha even if that is true, it doesn’t justify him slamming Dietrich-Smith’s head into the ground 3 times, and then getting up and stomping on his arm. I doubt that story is true either, as Dietrich-Smith and Campen have both said that it was a lie. The shoe tying thing is nothing more then an excuse, just like the one he gave in the press conference after our first game.

Only way he’d be pulled at the half is if we’re beating the Lions 35-0…. or EDS starts untying more shoes to create more ejections.

Id we play Flynn the whole way, we will probably win

He’s the best backup in the league, he nearly beat the Pats in foxborough. I wouldn’t want to put him in halfway for Rodgers because Rodgers very well could get injured in the 1st half, and it takes some time to get comfortable entering in the middle of the game.

I'm starting to feel less and less comfortable with Flynn as a QB.

He had the one good game last year, which will probably parlay into a starting job next year, but I attribute his success more to the same reason Ponder had success in the first game against us this year, which is a lack of tape on him. I think the organization would have been best served to trade him before the season when his value was the highest.
Of course this is looking at with hindsight which as we know is 20/20, and I don’t fault the team for keeping him, but I don’t think he will ever be more than a game manager type QB.

I agree: start Flynn

Matt Flynn deserves a chance to show why he was so sought after before the season – remember he was being looked at pretty intently.

And I think the man is up to the task. I’m not the least bit worried about Aaron Rodgers getting rusty and I think Matt Flynn can show some stuff out there. If he starts for the Pack, the Lions will start thinking it’s a gimmie and – I already know the first quarter will be rough, but once Flynn settles down, he’ll start putting some numbers on them.

by AdamA on Dec 28, 2011 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

I think playing Flynn

the whole game would be the smart move for two reasons. First, the Lions have very little game film on Flynn. Second in the event Detroit does play the Pack in the playoffs it is one less game film the Lions will have on Rodgers.

Yes

Coaches/players/coordinators spend hours watching film, and it gives them an edge. They won’t be ready for Flynn, and they will get less chances to key on the tendencies (if he has any tendencies besides throwing TDs lol) of Rodgers.

You tossed this idea around in your head the last few days and came to no conclusion

I do have my own conclusion. I just prefer to ask others and make this a conversation. This site gives me the ability to do that. I would like to them to start Harrell and play him the entire game. The Packers and the rest of the NFL already know what they have in Matt Flynn. However there is this interesting QB named Graham Harrell on the Packers roster who we have heard good things about. How about putting him on the field and finding out how he responds in an actual game situation?

by Timothy Bryce on Dec 28, 2011 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

Not the Preseason

If you start Harrell then you jeopardize the entire teams comradery. These are grown men who are getting paid millions of dollars, I dont think they will like your idea very much. Sorry if you have a man crush on Harrell…

one half

you need to make sure the starters are still in the same page. Entire starting offenses never get 2 weeks off from playing, I don’t want to risk there being rust to start the first playoff game, especially since statistically the first quarter is when the D plays its worst.

Plus all this talk on how Brees may have passed Rodgers in MVP voting is ridiculous and a game off for Rodgers might get Brees an MVP for some reason

Detroit should be playing this game like a playoff game

We have the chance of playing the winner of Dallas and the Giants rather than the Saints in the 1st round. Matchups mean everthing and we match up better with Dallas or the Giants in the 1st round. There’s no reason to try jumping over the mountain when you can get a step or two up before making that jump..

by msivits on Dec 28, 2011 6:23 PM CST reply actions

YEAH, this game should be HUGE for the Lions…this year, the diff between the 5 adn 6 seed is HUGE, plus the six seed would mean a guaranteed game against GB in round two which is probably not something they want either.

It means a lot for guys to have longest started streaks. Also, we need him to stay sharp because he isn’t going to face anyone for 2 weeks!

Also, Rodgers will have a full week of practice during the bye week to face either the #5 or $6 seed. The divisional game will be enough of a tune-up to get ready for the Saints/49ers in the Conference championship

Start Rodgers and have him play the first half.

After what I saw Flynn do last December against New England, I’d trust him to keep any lead Rodgers builds up. Chances are the Lions probably won’t get in many good chances against Rodgers given his quick released against pressure.

And also, I think MM is going to do this because he and the fans are not going to want to lose at home to the Lions going into the playoffs, regardless of how much meaning the game has.

Hopefully the Packers start all their starters, and leave them in all game too

No doubt that Rogers is the best QB on your team, so as a Lions fan I want to play the best and beat the best. If we lose so be it. But I don’t want any cheap wins.

From the Packers perspective it makes sense to sit some players and not worry about the game. Some might think that it would be better to beat the Lions and force them to play the Saints. Either way you get a dangerous team out of your way for later. It is arguable who would beat up the Saints more, or have a better shot at taking them out, between Atlanta and Detroit I am not so sure that the Lions are the bigger threat to the Saints. After all they are division rivals and seem to play each other physically.

From the perspective of who the Packers would rather face later, should the 6 seed knock off the Saints, I would think that they would want to face Atlanta. The Packers have owned the Falcons of late and much like the logic above, I think the Lions would play a more intense and physical game against the packers down the road.

So while I want the Packers to play to win, and have the game be legit no matter how it turns out, in some ways it makes more sense to set the Falcons up to go against the Saints. “shrug” All moot anyhow since the coaches make the decisions and all we can do is hope for a good, clean, injury free game on Sunday.

I think, from all information coming out of the media, that McCarthy is planning on playing Rodgers...

for only a short time, if at all. He said he wants all three QBs to get time, so I’m not sure if that’s dependent on the score or just the time in the game.

He is also not playing several starters who are ailing a bit and will probably give some guys time that he may want to see in the playoffs if they give a good showing. I’m guessing this will be played like the 3rd Preseason game more than anything else but you never know.
