Tim Masthay's Best Game Of The Season

Masthay named 'NFC Special Teams Player of the Week'. I was critical of Tim Masthay back in October for having an awful net average of 33.5. He's played better since, and last week against the Giants was his best game of the season. It was so good that he was named NFC special teams player of the week because he placed four punts inside the 20 yard line. He's now pinned 16 punts inside the 20 yard line for the season (out of 41 attempts).

His net punting average is up to a respectable 36.9 for the season. That's not great, but he's managed to improve his season's average by almost 4 yards over the past few games.

This is the second year in a row in which he's gotten off to a slow start. He plays much better later in the season, and manages to improve his stats to decent levels. He's certainly proved he can be very good, and now he just has to work on his consistency going forward.

I never even thought Masthay was an issue this year

I thought his punting this year has been above average to very good, net average be damned. Part of that stat is the fact that he’s punted only 41 times which is 29th in the league (which is courtesy of our 50% 3rd down percentage which is 2nd best). He’s also putting about 40% of his punts inside the 20. By contrast the leaders in Net Yards/Punt are only doing that at a 32-33% clip.

Overall I’m pleased with Masthay. I’ve never felt he was a liability.

Excellent

Great stats & way to back it up! Masthay is such a underrated weapon for us a almost single handedly beat the Bears in the NFC Championship game & the 2nd to last regular season game!

This is his net punting average.

His average would be a lot higher if the players on special teams could make that first tackle, instead of blowing it and passing the returner to the next guy. That being said, they have at least kept the returners out of our end-zone, including Hester. That was good special teams play.

I haven't had many issues with punt coverage this year

Kick-off coverage, OTOH.

I never understood the worries about his net average early in the year

small sample size. for all you know, he could have been trying to spot it. it is good to see him have a good year though after previous disasters.

Just needs to work on not fumbling on those 4th down conversions.
