MVP? Who Cares?
mtpackersfan has a piece below where he talks about an ESPN writer who thinks Brady deserves the League MVP award this year. Let them say what they want.
Rodgers alluded to the absurdity of Skip Bayless harping on how over-rated he is, saying he's the sports journalism version of a shock jock, and that seems to me just about right. There's an old expression that a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich, and that premise seems to have been demonstrated by an article at NFL.com where the author argues that because the Colts have been so abjectly horrible, Peyton Manning deserves the MVP title.
Yeah, despite that the P stands for Player. It's not that I hate the Player, it's just that . . . doesn't he have to, y'know, play?
Well, heck, wouldn't the Packers be the BEST. TEAM. EVAH! if Jim Brown suited up for them? Where does the absurdity stop?
The fact is, people like this try to impress you with demonstrating just how far up their asses they can stick their heads. It's a form of argumentative contortionism that's meant to display just how clever they are and to garner clicks. It may do that, but when all is said and done, it's just insulting . . . not least to Peyton Manning.

Oh, I meant to add . . .
that I don’t think Rodgers will care much, if he can get a second Super Bowl ring.
Well, in defense of all those articles, Rodgers doesn't play...
He dominates!

Everyone is just looking for ways to justify anything besides GB winning it all and Rodgers being the MVP. The journalists don’t make their money by stating the obvious AND the guys on the east coast HATE admitting someone in the midwest is better.

just another chip on his shoulder if he somehow doesn't win it
football does not build character, it reveals character.
Journalists do make their money (and get awards) for writing cleverly, not for stating the obvious, as TrevorR noted above. For the most part they are simply doing their job and trying to come up with something interesting to say. I doubt that there is much anti-Packer sentiment in it (other than Bayliss, who is a Cowboy apologist). Sports writing is even more based on cleverness than other types of journalism, because as long as Penn State or Syracuse type scandals are not happening, sports doesn’t produce ‘serious’ news. Remember, it is a game.
And the article on Peyton Manning is especially done as a ‘clever’ piece without even being meant as a serious proposal for Manning to be named MVP. It’s a way of saying, “Wow, Peyton was even more important to the Colts than we thought!” in a clever way.
Yea but more often than not,
They end up coming off as trash

Yeah I agree on the Manning thing. Heck I’ve even thrown it around in discussions. I don’t intend for people to actual vote for manning but geez you can’t argue with his importance to the team, what a change. Same with the Tebow thing, I don’t think he has a legit shot at winning but man you can’t argue that he’s making a team win that wasn’t winning before. That said, there’s a good chance that Rodgers wins this by a landslide and that is boring to the media.

I care
and I was stoked to see Ryan Braun win the NL MVP. My favorite players winning awards is something I like. I care that Montee Ball isn’t being given a shot to win the Heisman. I want greatness to be recognized.

well Kemp was more deserving than Braun
just like Bautista and Ellsbury were more deserving than Verlander in the AL, but I still liked seeing Braun win it, always been a fan.

He used to stare at his home runs a little longer than I liked, but he's doing less of that now.
Braun is a terrific baseball player.
How could you tell?

I meant
“How could you tell that his homer is what he was staring at?” Coulda been the third baseman.
O.O

Braun is probably my favourite non-Jays player
unreal power for an average sized guy, not unlike the Jedi

well, I guess now we know where that power came from :|

do you know anything about baseball?
apparently not. Bautista was more deserving than either of them, but Ellsbury was right with him.

You are right about Bautista
but Verlander was worth more as a starter than Ellsbury in all sustainable categories.
イチロー!
If you did a little bit of digging
you would have realized how aided Ellsbury’s HRs were by park induced factors last year. Take him out of Fenway and he is a good but not great hitting outfielder. Certainly not worth sharing the same breath as Bautista.
イチロー!
Also
A lot of Ellsbury’s value is tied up in defense which is notoriously hard to replicate season in and season out. Just look at Torii Hunter. UZR and other measurements of fielding are quite glitchy, especially with a sample size as small as one season. Looking at his career I would say the 16 he posted last year is an aberration, about 10 points too high.
イチロー!
True, but he had a lot of steals
I was mostly going by fWAR, but you’re right about the defense part, although I would put a little value in it, because he’s so fast.
Also, Fenway is not necessarily favourable for a lefty hitting homers, aside from right at the foul line it’s one of the deepest parks in the majors in right, and Ellsbury put up 30+ homers…
Personally I think Bautista should have won it going away, but the BBWAA doesn’t wanna give it to a guy from a non-contending team, much less one that doesn’t play in the US and was slandered by ESPN during the last month of the season
football does not build character, it reveals character.
yes he was, by a substantial margin
Kemp 8.7 fWAR > Braun 7.8 fWAR
Kemp 10.0 rWAR >> Braun 7.7 rWAR
Like I said though, I was still glad to see Braun win it

He's getting a shot...
just no one is voting for him. I just read he was invited to the ceremony though so that puts his name out there as a serious competitor. I’ll be pissed if Richardson wins though, if its some QB…well that is to be expected I guess.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
but 4th place?
That was BS.. I could see RG3 winning, but how Ball was 4th (behind Richardson) is beyond me. He had more TDs than even the QBs on the list! And the stats against Richardson are unbelievable in an advatage to Ball.. If Ball played for Bama and had the same stats he would have won hands down.
More proof that the Heisman is full of crap.

Your right who cares?
Theres only one MVP award that I want Rodgers to win Superbowl MVP! If he gets the regular MVP award great, but I think we all would rather have the SB MVP award….
personally I couldn't care less about that one either
even if it’s Jarrett Bush or Tim Masthay winning the SB MVP, so long as it’s a Packer
