Jermichael Finley

As many of you may have realized I've been gone from APC for a couple weeks w/ the exception of a couple posts when I was able to get some time on my parents computer.   I was in GB visiting family/friends for the past 2 weeks.  Was great being in GB for the SB win.   I lived there when they won in 97, but moved and lived in AZ when they lost in 98.  Just returned yesterday and while boarding the plain from Mil to Phx, I saw J-Mike sitting in 1st class, of course.  While boarding, I recognize Finley and mentioned I was a fan of his and that I bought his jersey last week!  Did the fist bump thing and told him that I was expecting an All Pro season from him this year.  To which he said...  That make both of us.

Star-divide

After the flight landed I saw him again at the baggage claim and asked how his knee was doing.  Said his knee is doing well and its strong and he's getting in shape for the upcoming season, prior to the OTA's (assuming there are any).  He mentioned he was in Phx training at one of the facilities that caters to professional athelets.  I believe he's doing so at API (Athletes Performance Institute).  Before my luggage got there I reiterated that I was expecting an All Pro season and he said he's got it taken care of!!  He was pretty willing to talk and as he had conversations w/ a couple others too...  Tho as everyone knows he is extremely confident and maybe a bit over-confident/cocky.  Overall he kept to himself and talked to the people that approached him.

Just thought I would share my brief conversation w/ him...  I really did order his #88 white jersey and a Matthews #52 home jersey the week prior.  Been doin pretty well w/ my jersey purchases.  Got my Rodgers jersey in 08 and he went on to become a Pro Bowl/Championship QB, Matthews was my next purchase anyway since I needed a Defensive standout and since the price was only $20 for the jersey's I decided to get 2 of them and chose Finley over Jennings!

Sweet man! I would love to run into a Packer on a plane. I’ve had a few celebrities sit down next to me on the plane (“The Miz” for WWE and Real World and “Cooper” from Private Practice to name two of them that come to mind) but that was when I lived in Chicago and flew ORD to LAX a lot. I haven’t run into anyone on those flights from MSP.

Great experience though, thanks for sharing. Glad he was cool and was willing to talk. Did you mention that he should stop by APC sometime?? :-)

My neighbor worked at the Norfolk airport back in the late 80’s and she would get me in whenever WCW people where flying in. THEY ARE ALL HUGE, met almost all of them Sting, Stiener brothers, Ric Flair, Lex Luger (VERY BIG and very egotistical).

by ShawnH on Feb 16, 2011 12:27 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I would agree about them being huge. I barely said a word to him, I didn’t want him to get annoyed and throw me out of the plane! haha I actually didn’t even realize he was a wrestler at the time, I remembered him from Real World and the Challenges on MTV. Then I looked him up later to see that he was now a wrestler…fitting choice of careers for him.

Luger… he was ‘meh’ to me. He looked out of place in wrestling, except when he was trying to break people’s arms with chairs.

“Packer on a plane”

New horror movie idea. Vikings on a Plane. An innocent bystander is stuck on a plane with Vikings fans droning on and on about how great their team is and all the NFL conspiracies about why they haven’t won anything. Would be far more horrifying than Snakes on a Plane. Don’t know why your comment made me think of that….

Great idea. And a sequel, “Bears on a Plane,” practically writes itself.

Followed by “Jerry Jones on a Plane”, and then “Mile High Nightmare Club – Ben Roethlisberger on a Plane”, then “Brett Favre with a Camera Phone on a Plane” . . . I mean these things really write themselves!

My sister was working in Ohare at a sunglass hut

the year Donald Driver went to his first Pro Bowl (think he was an alternate or injury replacement). He was killing time in the sunglass hut and someone approached him and he took out some pictures of himself and signed it for the guy. My sister noticed (not knowing who he was—she’s not a sports fan) and told him that her brother (me) was a big Packers fan and then he signed a picture for her which she gave to me. She said he was real nice and she could tell he was really happy about the pro bowl.

Throwbacks

Weirdly tangental, but does anyone know if this year’s throwbacks will be worn again? I wanted an 88 throwback, but am concerned about the possibly bad mojo associated with getting a jersey replica never actually won.

Cool story Stroh! (!!!)

Did you get a sense of Finley’s feelings about the possible loss of OTAs? I’ve wondered how players feel about that.

by GinSlinger on Feb 15, 2011 4:43 PM CST reply actions

Didn't really speak about the CBA and negotiations

Just that he was training in Phx to get/stay in shape for OTA’s.

Regarding the throwbacks… I don’t think they’ll ever be used again and since he didn’t wear it/didn’t play in that game, personally I wouldn’t buy it. Just me tho…

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Feb 15, 2011 6:07 PM CST up reply actions

Don't think they use a 3rd jersey every year.

Or was that throwback going to be their 3rd jersey every year?

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Feb 15, 2011 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

They always have a 3rd jersey

but they don’t always wear it for games. In fact, I think that gold jersey with green numbers was the third jersey for a few seasons, though never worn. According to this guy, he says:

I expect that we will see them again next season; they will continue to remain on the NFL’s books through 2015 as the Packers’ only permitted alternate, by which time we’ll be talking about the team’s plans for their 100th anniversary in 2019.
and he seems to know quite a bit about the team’s uniforms. I think they’ll bust it out from time to time before 2015.

I hope they keep selling them though. I really want one of those jackets like MM and TT were wearing at the Return to Titletown event and on the sidelines during “throwback” games. Love those!

I bought a Rodgrts throwback in September

Been wearing it all year, both for games and for my Thursday night bowling league, where I am on a team that has a rule that any time you don’t wear a sports team jersey, it costs you a round of beers for the team. :)

Have to see...

I do consider it fortuitous that I was again in GB and they happened to win it again! Not an all together superstitious fan, but how do I approach it next year should they make it back to the SB? We’ll have to see… Don’t know if I would spring for the trip again, just to keep a superstition I don’t really believe in! Then again maybe the fans here at APC would pitch in and spring for the trip for me… LOL

Any takers? Wanna help send me back to GB again next year if the Pack are in SB XLVI? Lets take up a collection to keep the string alive! LOL

Hate to say it

But a friend of mine went to Green Bay for weekend and attended a local church there. A lady and a guy sat down in front of them and when the people all started meeting each other they turned around and it was Deanna and Brett Favre (this was a few years ago, before all the crap started) . She said that he was extremley nice (as was Deanna) and she was surprised at how big he was. I remember her telling me that he looked so small on the TV compared to the other players and she was shocked at how big he was.

I wouldn’d doubt it at all. They always seemed as though they’d be a friendly couple outside of football, particularly when they were the “King and Queen” of GB.

The only celebrity that I’ve ever talked to on a plane was …

OJ Simpson!!! I was in the Marines in the mid 80’s and flying to LA back from leave. Juice was on the hop from Phoenix to LA. I talked to him about the Packers, woeful as they were that the time. OJ was a MNF Announcer at the time and his Hertz Commercials were n TV all the time.

I kind of have to wonder at that. You can’t hardly find a Packers jersey on Ebay anymore for double that… cool story though.

I wish I still had my connections

Back in the day, my dad was able to get me inside the fences during practices and stuff. I remember being on the little outdoor practice field and chatting with Ryan Longwell while practice was going on. It was a pretty cool moment being on the field watching some of our greatest players (in the 90s) getting ready and practicing.

Good story, Stroh

My family and I saw Bob Uecker at the airport coming back from spring training once. My mom started turning around in circles all excited saying “That’s Bob Uecker! That’s Bob Uecker!” and my dad yelled out “Hey Ueck!” He waved. It was funny, mostly because of my parents’ reaction. They kinda’ freaked out.

Sounds like Finley’s nice about talking to fans.

Ran into Mike Shanahan at a mall in Orlando

Me and my buddies weren’t sure if it was really him, so we stalked the guy throughout the whole place (turns out he was going to the bathroom). I’m pretty sure he knew were following him and finally one of us said, “hey… Mr. Shanahan!” and sure enough it was him. Nice guy, shook our hands and chatted for a bit.

A lot shorter than I would have imagined. No one else in the mall knew who he was, haha.

Also was a “coworker” of Johnny Depps when he came to WI for Public Enemies. That was pretty cool. More star struck with him than with Shanny.

Where you at Little Bohemia?

I live about 30 miles from there, and still remember the day the where filming there. My wife and I had to go out of town and drove by. Tons of people there, and since my daughter is like a number 1 Johnny Depp fan, we told her that he was standing on the side of the road as we drove by, she was soooo mad she didn’t speak to us for a week. Good movie though, love going down there and seeing the bullet holes, and the shot up window.

by ShawnH on Feb 17, 2011 12:39 AM CST up reply actions

Nope, in Oshkosh

That sounds cool though, never been to Little Bohemia. It was crazy seeing all the people waiting to get a look at Depp. It’s funny because when our stand in group walked by the fans they all looked as of as if we were actors… should have signed a couple autographs haha.

Yeah it was a pretty good movie, especially considering Depp doesn’t really do many high quality movies anymore.

Had a similar brush with greatness with a legendary Packer. . .

In 1980, I was a college student visiting my folks in Shawano, WI (30 miles west of Green Bay). I was catching a flight out of Green Bay’s Austin Straubel Airport to Grand Rapids, MI to return to school. The plane was an old 4-banger propeller-powered puddle hopper. It only held about 40 passengers and there was no first class. In fact, you had to walk across the tarmac to board the plane. The flight was sold out and was holding for a few minutes because they said one more person needed to board. That last person appeared at the door, a bit out of breath, looking like he had been running. There was no mistaking who this person was – one of the greatest Packers of them all . . . it was RAY NITSCHKE!!!! . . .

IT GETS EVEN BETTER!! The only empty seat left on the plane was right next to me. Big Ray spotted the empty seat, threw his bag in the overhear, looked at me and said “how ya’ doin’” as he sat down. There we were, shoulder to shoulder. I think I mumbled something back, but was too starstruck to remember. I was probably staring inappropriately, but he was great and put me at ease. He asked me if I wanted something to drink and called for the flight attendant. He told me that since he retired from football, that he was in demand as a motivational speaker and was flying to Grand Rapids, MI to speak at an Amway Corporation convention. He told me how cool it was to work with Burt Reynolds in ’The Longest Yard". He said his wife was flying in to meet him later that day. Amazingly, football was hardly mentioned.

I was surprised he didn’t get mobbed – the people on the plane were trying get a good look at the great linebacker, but they gave him his space. The only regret was that it was such a short flight. I would have loved to talk football with the late, great

RAY NITSCHKE.
