The Pack's Biggest Challenge

So I was over at ESPN and was reading an article about Matthew Stafford being able to take the Lions over the hump if he can stay healthy and having the tools to join the ranks of the elite such as Rodgers in the future.  The article is Here (I'm a lions fan by the way) The problem I came across was from the fans who were commenting on the piece and I wanted to know if this is how most pack fans really feel or if they were just blowhard bandwagon fans who don't even really know whats going on in the division.   More after the Jump

Star-divide

So over at POD the general consensus is that the Pack should be able to win the division next year because of how deep the team is and you know the whole being super bowl champs thing.  Anyway we also feel that we should be able to give you all a good challenge for the division and a playoff spot.  Most of us feel that the bears were just really lucky this year.  (Had the catch been ruled one in week one they would have missed the playoffs altogether)  We feel as though we are in position because of our young talent to only get better and be playoff contenders every year.

When I read their comments though (the espn posters) they talked about how Detroit has no chance of winning the division or making the playoffs anytime soon because of us having the play you all twice a year and "the second best team in the division (Bears) twice a year)" as well.

So my question to you all is do you all feel the same way or were they blowhards? Do you all still think of us as the dysfunctional Lions of MM's years, and see the bears as your only real competition in the North or do you see us as improving?

I predicted the Lions to finish ahead of the Bears this year.

I think that they and the Bears will be fighting for 2nd and a possible wild card next year.

I spend plenty of time at POD, and I am a huge Suh fan. DET is definitely moving in the right direction. You have a solid young core with a healthy Stafford, Megatron, and Suh. You still need another playmaker or 2 on defense and solid depth everywhere, but you’re getting there.

I think the Bears were a bit of a fluke, but they are still a decent team. I still have the Bears as the favorite for number 2, but I could easily see the Lions overtaking them if the offseason (whenever that starts) goes well.

ESPN and YAHOO Commenters are all dumb and biased

Disregard them as no logic is ever provided there. Here we try to look at the in’s and out’s of everything and try coming up with a rational discussion. As opposed to saying, this team sucks and that team will always suck.

Anyways, the general consensus here is that the Lions will be the 2nd place team in the NFC North and will have a Wild Card spot if Matt Stafford stays healthy. Your team is quickly rising though, and after that it may come down to a coin flip. Considering the numerous holes still on your defense though (LB, CB), we don’t think the Lions will pass the Packers just yet. They will certainly give us a hard time though and will certainly contend.

No way you guys pass Green Bay.

That’s not being rude or mean, it’s just that this Packers team is too deep to not win the NFC North in 2011. And I really hate Chicago, but you can’t just ignore the fact that they only gave up 17.5 points per game in 2010; that defense is for real. Detroit can put up points, but at some point, you have to stop somebody. If the Lions can do that, they can pass Chicago.

p.s. You’re DEFINITELY better than Minnesota. That’s not even up for debate.

It's easy to give up 17.5 points

when you get a Miami team without a QB and the worst Carolina Panthers offense since 2001, though. Not to mention the trainwreck formerly known as the Minnesota Vikings offense headed by QB4…twice.

On the other hand

We scored 17, 10 and 21 against that D. = 16.0/game.

Lions are improving but have a ways to go. MAYBE they beat out Minn. next yr.

they beat out Minn this year...

The Vikes are on the way down, and the Bears may follow them if they can’t replace their defense as they get old. The Lions may be second best in the North next year.

To clear things up I never said we could win the North this year

1.I know that the pack is very deep.
2. Are you sure that they are for real when they played some really bad offenses this year
3. Our defense isn’t nearly as bad as it was (or as bad you seem to think) when we were on our way to making history (in a bad way). We were much improved and were in every game to the last 5 minutes or more except for NE

Growing up in the UP

Where I grew up in the Houghton Hancock area there were probably 70% Packer fans 30% Lion fans when people went to the big city shopping they went GB. Back when I lived there the Packers were on TV not the Lions. The Lions were my biggest rivalry team and to some extent still are, living here in GB you learn for the majority of fans the Lions are a distant 3rd in rivalry behind Chicago and Minnesota.

But I follow your team more than any other than the Packers. I would definetly put you on a level going into next season over the Bears and Vikings. The Vikings are in disarray and Chicago is going to feel the pain of all there better players on defense getting old at once. You guys have a explosive offense and I could see that getting better. I don’t see you approaching the Packers level, we have the potential to be much better with all the players we have coming off IR.

Your DL is so good it covers a bad seconday and linebacker corps. You guys have a lot of holes to fill there more than can be accomplished in one season. The better teams with a elite QB will exploit that everytime. You guys beat us because your DLine played great but that was the worst game our Oline played by a longshot. I don’t see them playing that bad against you again. Good luck I think you guys are going to be real.

Speaking from the current Houghton-Hancock perspective

The lobbies at tech were full this year for the Packers-Lions games, and there is truly something special coming in that rivalry. We got a lot of detroit games on TV, so I think I watched about 10 regular season games for you, when Stafford was on the field, you guys were clearly the besteam in those games. The downside, that lasted about 1.5 games as I recall.

IF Stafford starts and finishes 14-16 games, the lions could win 10 games, finish second, and make the playoffs. They’re an improving team with a lot of young talent.

As I like to say to all my lions fans friends though, “luckily for us, so far that shoulder has been held together by two pieces of gum and a paper clip.”

Seriously though, you guys are getting there. Should be a real fun rivalry in a couple years.

The time for reckoning has come, and we already have the answer

Lions

I think the lions are improving and should contend for a wild card berth in the playoffs… Tho I think your still a year away from making the playoffs! Lions still have alot of holes to fill in the back 7 on D and the OL and WR beside Megatron. Theres a chance you could beat out the bears, but I don’t see it happening just yet! My guess is your a year away from the playoffs and 2 years from being able to challenge the Pack for the division!

You are getting to the point were your going to be a dangerous team tho!

actually being able to stay healthy for a full year too.

Better than the Vikings for sure

And if they get some key aquisitions this offseason then Detroit will be ahead of the Bears. Detroit lost alot of ultra close games last season that they wouldve won with one or two more playmakers on Off or Def. But as you all know, the Pack are on top and will be for quite a while.

I gots to put the team on my back, doo.

2011 Lions are at least as scary as Bears or Vikings

Bears still won’t have an o-line, Urlacher isn’t getting younger (neither is Peppers), and they still won’t have good receivers, and they haven’t had enough top draft picks to have young up-and-coming talent.

Vikings won’t have a QB, the Williams Wall has fallen as hard as the Walls of Jericho, Hutchinson is getting old, and McKinnie has shown that he’ll never improve, and they also don’t have a lot of young guys who should improve significantly for next year.

The Lions, however, have lots of young guys that should improve in 2011. As far as guys getting old, you have what, Julian Peterson? I heard he didn’t have a very good 2010 anyway. I see only improvement from your team, whereas the Bears and Vikings will be battling age and lost draft picks.

This, but...

The Bears weren’t as lucky as people think (very good D), the Lions are definitely improving, but the Vikings are not – yet. After this next season, they will have few places to go but up.

And LA.

I'll take McCarthy's word for it

I can’t find the article right now, but I remember coming across a report from the combine that MM went out of his way to compliment the Detroit Lions and how far they have come. This praise was unsolicited and really shows that the Lions are going to be the main threat to the Pack in years to come.

That said, I do think that the Viking could have a quick turn around if the stars align for them. The Bears also will have some life to them since they have a QB with some potential on the team as well.

It all depends on Stafford. If he stays healthy, then yeah, I think you’ll give us some good games but I don’t think you’ll win the division over us. I wouldn’t discount the Bears either. They definitely had some luck but they have a good defense, and Martz really got that offense going late in the season.

Of all the NFC North teams

The Packers struggled the most against Detroit in 2010. We beat Minnesota twice, went 2-1 against the Bears, and 1-1 against Detroit (with the Lions putting up more total points than the Packers). The more I think about it the more I think that Packers fans who discount the Lions must not have started watching until the Patriots game.

The Lions (finally) have the look and feel

of a winner.
They have put a strong exclamation point on the “it all starts in the trenches” philosophy.
They now just need an o-line to match the strength of their d-line.

The only way they can maintain the trends of their losing history now is if they fire their coaching staff.
As long as ownership and fans stay patient in the building process, they will be a team to reckon-with for years to come.
They now believe and know how to win. This is a huge psychological transformation.
If Stafford (and the rest of the team) stays relatively healthy, they will be in the running for the NFC North crown.

The Bears did not have a "lucky" year!

Yes, they had some fortunate wins, but good teams do find ways to win.
The Bears and Lions were both tough-teams last season.

by docg on Mar 14, 2011 10:43 AM CDT reply actions

No, they did have a lucky year

Can you name a team that had fewer injuries this year than the Bears? Both games against the Lions were questionable games that the Lions could have won. The Packers committed so many penalties in the game they lost to them, it’s hard to say the Bears deserved to win that game (though, neither did the Packers). Any of those three games go in favor of the opposition, the Bears don’t even make the playoffs (instead, they get the 2 seed & a 1st round bye). Oh, and once they did make the playoffs, who dd they face? The only team ever to make the playoffs with a losing record.

The Bears

drew the 2-14 Caroline Panthers, the Miami Dolphins sans a QB, and Minnesota after QB4 had tanked. Twice. And they got Philadelphia without either of their starting QBs, AND in Soldier Field.

They definitely had some luck but they were a good team after their bye week. They had a strong defense and an offense that, for the most part, could do enough. They beat the Eagles, the Jets, and us. Those were three of the best teams in the league this past season. And even in our other two games with them, they played us darn close. There’s no question they caught some breaks, but there were still a good team.

Have to agree PAD. Bears got some breaks, but they did what good teams do… They capitlized on them! They’ll be our main competition again next year for the NFCN… Beyond that I would say Lions will be our competition! One team on the way up learning to win, the other a good team that knows how to win, but who’s window is closing quiickly!

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

They found ways to win?

Like how Calvin Johnson’s TD catch wasn’t a TD catch in Week 1…..
Or how they seemed to face a 3rd string QB every other week….
Or how the toughest opponents on their schedule ALL had to travel to Chicago for their matchup…

They are a team with a good, but aging defense. The OL will take some time to gel. By the time the OL gels, the defense will be ancient history.
