Packers get 4th round pick for Kampman

83919978_medium

UPDATE: There was some hope that they could obtain a 3rd round compensatory pick for him, but a 4th round pick (at the end of the round) isn't bad. One last benefit from his great career with the team. More on the compensatory picks, Carolina was the big winner, from SB Nation.

The Green Bay Packers received a compensatory 4th round pick for the loss of free agent DE Aaron Kampman. Kampman was let go after a difficult position change to outside linebacker and a season ending knee injury.

Ted Thompson has had some success drafting in the 4th round, finding RG Josh Sitton and LG T.J. Lang.  But another possibility is that the Packers trade up into the first round using other picks (not their newest 4th rounder, comp. picks can't be traded).  The Packers could trade their other 4th, or even a 3rd round pick to move up higher into the first round.

Yeah it’s a long shot, but there are rumors that some teams like Julio Jones better so Green be there around #10.

You do realize

That moving up to #10 would probably take the Packers entire draft class, right? Unless you start throwing in first-rounders for subsequent years, I don’t see any way the Packers would even (realistically) move into the top 20.

The Skins need a QB.

Trade Flynn and our 1st round pick (and a late one like 5th round) to move up to #10. And now that we don’t have Jolly coming back, we could take Watt. I wouldn’t be in favor of that but just letting my mind wander, sheesh.

That's assuming a CBA is worked out by draft time

Which seems like a long-shot at this point.

Would take Flynn, #32 and 64!

And thats being generous with Flynn as a mid 2nd round grade! Not even close… Or close to happening!!

Well, if they would be willing to trade for Flynn it would be because they feel that he’s capable of becoming their franchise QB. Thompson would obviously know this, and because of that I think he’d be considered worth more then a mid 2nd round grade.

Hasselbeck

He had shown alot more than Flynn and he only brought a swap of 1sts… So maybe a 2nd… How about Brunnell? How much we get for him? Aaron Brooks brought a 4th… I think the most anyone would give is a 2nd. Just not enough tape to be certain he’s a franchise guy.

Yeah, I suppose you’re probably right. I think we could probably get a 2nd for him. I remember reading an article on NFP before the season started basically stating that there were some teams intrigued by Flynn. I’m sure his play during the season only encouraged those teams more.

Either way, it should be interesting to see what happens with him. I hope we trade him before he becomes an FA, so we can get something for him.

Trade

For a 2nd yeah I would do that… But otherwise I would hold onto him as insurance if Rodgers misses a couple games! We can win w/ Flynn on the field if Rodgers is out… And when he leaves as a FA we’ll get a compensatory pick!

I'm convinced...

… that the NFL is slowly pushing down the compensation teams get for losing free agents with the idea of eventually getting rid of compensatory picks altogether. I suppose we should be happy with a 4 since Kampman missed half the season with a blown ACL, but the idea that there was only 1 free agent signed last year worth a 3rd round compensatory pick is ridiculous.

When are you going to start another Brewers site...

… so I have a place to hang out online during baseball season again? (No offense, but Brewerfan.net is pretty dull and not so user friendly).

Was really hoping we got a 3rd for Kampy!

It was kinda a borderline case tho, so shouldn’t be upset w/ it… Another 3rd would have come in handy if we wanted to move up in the 1st! Still would have had a pick in every round… I’m guessing a trade up is a little less likely now.

Me too.

But it was pretty unlikely since his injury kept his numbers low. That sucks because the way the system works, the value he offers the Jags over the balance of his career is largely ignored when they set compensation..

Trade up might still happen

Really though we still made out pretty good. As Ted pointed out there really wasn’t much given out this year for compensatory picks. Really we should be thankful we got as high a pick as we did.

As for trading up…well if there is the guy that Ted likes he’ll pull the trigger. We’ve traded out of the third round before in order to secure the player that was worth it and if the right situation arises I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen again.

I think maybe he’s implying that his career isn’t done? Or at least I hope. I would hope no one would question the fact that Kampman has been for his career.

From JSOnline...

interesting article about compensatory picks in recent history, plus a Top 10.

And wow at #6. A 3rd for Aaron Brooks who was only a 3rd string QB in GB. As much as I remember him sucking a fat one when he started for other teams, his numbers weren’t THAT awful.

by PhoenicianPakFan on Mar 27, 2011 5:21 PM CDT reply actions

That’s why I think Flynn is easily worth a 2nd round pick. Granted, it was quite a while ago but there’s been some other crazy QB trades like Charlie Whitehurst last season.

He wasn't that awful.

He was just sporadically bad and he was a strange duck. He’s smile after interceptions and his body language on the field sucked when things went bad. He had some success early and didn’t seem to work that hard to get better once he landed the starting gig in New Orleans. It’s easy to forget now, but Brooks threw 4TDs in the first playoff game the Saints ever won in the history of their franchise.

Talk about a team of headcases: Brooks, Horn and Ricky Williams all played for those Saints teams. Brooks never really got in trouble off the field that I can remember, but he didn’t appear to be much of a leader. Horn had more ego than talent, and as a talented guy that’s saying something. And then there was Williams…

Brooks

Funny thing is his best years by far were when he had McCarthy as his QB coach or OC… McCarthy helped Brooks ALOT and kept him productive… When McCarthy left Brooks went in the tank almost immediately! McCarthy basically turned Brooks from a bit of a headcase w/ good skills, into a one time Pro Bowl player and productive QB for a few years!

by Strohman on Mar 27, 2011 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

This is why ultimately I think that....

Rodgers is great because of McCarthy. Not that if McCarthy were to leave he wouldn’t be great after, but that McCarthy made Rodgers great because coaches take raw college talent and make them into professionals. I don’t know if Alex Smith could have been what ARod is in GB right now, but I’m pretty sure ARod could not have won a Super Bowl in SF last year! It takes the entire leadership caste to make the players what they. Its no wonder why Favre was great under strict coaches like Holmgren and McCarthy and not so fantastic under Sherman.

Your a smart man...

And your probably right about Rodgers being as good w/o McCarthy… Every QB ultimately is MUCH better for having continuity in coaching and development! Favre was a WCO QB his entire career, excepting maybe in NY. Manning has had the same offensive system that he is more a coach on the field than a QB. Continuity in scheme and coaching is HUGE for a QB!

Franchise QB’s IMO, are QB’s that can succeed in any scheme, but being in the same scheme allows for Greatness!!
