Packers Take A Look At A Couple Cornerbacks
Two recent reports have the Green Bay Packers looking at two defensive backs. These guys are waaaaaay off the radar, and I'd be surprised if the Packers would draft either one with even a 7th round pick. But they're candidates to be signed as undrafted free agents, who might have gotten workouts because there isn't enough game film to evaluate them. Or it could mean that they are serious about adding some depth in the secondary.
National Football Post reports on that the Packers attended the pro day at South Dakota State to watch CB Cole Brodie. I can imagine that there might not be much game filmed when South Dakota State takes the field. They may have wanted to take a better look at him.
Also from NFP, they attended a private workout for Baylor CB Antareis Bryan. In his case, the game film isn't recent enough since he's missed almost the entire last two years due to injury.

A CB is both a Good Idea and Not a Pressing Need
So in my opinion, they both are my answers. It’s not a huge “pressing” need, but considering Charles Woodson’s age, it is a relatively minor need and a good idea to look into. I won’t be upset regardless of whether we draft or don’t draft a CB next month.
Superbowl Champs Baby!!!!!

I said it’s essential. Right now, our 3 starting CB’s are probably the best group in the NFL. But if one goes down, or Woodson starts to decline (which is a possbility), that secondary suddenly becomes pretty vulnerable. It seems safe to say that Lee probably isn’t gonna turn into what some thought he would (though I personally thought he looked pretty good in the SB) and I really don’t know what the hell happened to Underwood. He was supposed to be our “most improved” player. Maybe the whole sexual assault allegations ruined what he could have been this season.
Either way, I think in todays NFL, it’s a huge advantage to have 4 capable CB’s. I really hope we draft one this April.

I still have some hope for Lee & Underwood
I don’t think either will become a superstar, but we may get a serviceable CB out of them.
13.
I really had a lot of hope for Underwood. I thought he showed some flashes late in his rookie year, and then McCarthy talked him up quite a bit in the offseason. I don’t seem to remember him playing much come regular season time though. Whether that’s because of his play or his legal issues, who really knows.

coincidence...
Probably just coincidence but the whole Dells thing seemed to really take some life out of him! Last I heard the Packers moved him back to Safety… Maybe he can turn it around now that he can focus on football alot more! We’ll find out in training camp.
I had alot of hope for him too…

We got somewhat lucky with Shields, but we got REALLY lucky that none of our top 3 CBs missed any games due to injury. Can’t expect that kind of luck in the future. We need at least one more CB who can play behind the current 3. …and I don’t think Lee’s going to get there.
injuries
Hard to believe, after last year’s M*A*S*H unit that the Packers were lucky at any position, but you’re right. Other than Al Harris, who was out the whole season, CB was a healthy position. Safety was ugly, but the team did get lucky at CB. Did Woodson miss any time (I mean, other than the 2nd half of the Super Bowl)?
i like this
the Packers have clearly been successful with identifying and developing talent at the CB position the past few years, with the progress of Sam Shields and Tramon Williams. I like that they are looking at some guys who are off the radar, that we could potentially sign as undrafted free agents
to me, that’s the best way to re-stock the position – take advantage of having some talent and depth and scout and develop some younger raw talent instead of investing a lot of $ or high draft picks there

Guys like Shields don't fall thru the cracks every year.
I wouldnt count on it happening again… Draft a guy that has great potential and athleticism and let him learf from Wood. Doesn’t have to be a high pick, but make sure you get one…
