Interesting Read

Just read this article at Packers.com.  Thompson's top 10 draft picks as GM.  Overall kinda interesting, but one sentence that struck me, since it was a topic of debate in January or February.

Star-divide

http://www.packers.com/news-and-events/article-1/Thompsons-top-10-draft-picks-His-first-is-his-best/018ac1fb-96c9-4ba1-977b-8e0336b0d8d5

The writeup on Clay Matthews begins w/ this sentence...  "The Packers had Matthews rated as a top-15 talent and, when he was still on the board in the early 20s, Thompson made a stunning but shrewd move."

As I have stated repeatedly and gotten into various discussions over, the Packers had Matthews rated very high on their draft board.  I mentioned ABOUT 12th overall and this article backs up my assertion that Matthews was indeed rated very highly by the Packers, when they moved up from the 2nd round to the 26th pick to draft Matthews.

Just thought I would share the very interesting article and findings with everyone.  I'm sure some of you may have already read it.

Thanks for sharing. The last thing I would do is label your idea a failure and discourage you from future idea sharing.

Not sure

how he discouraged you from future idea sharing.

Criticism I guess...

I was critical of his fanpost so that apparently means he isn’t able to share. Calling his article a fail (not a great idea) made him unable to share again I guess.

I hope he isn't discouraged from posting again....

just because he didn’t get the warmest reaction on the first one. His writing and article and all that were fine, the idea just got a bad reaction.

I agree with that.

I would like to think that Packer fans have thicker skin than that. :)
Keep posting, Mr. L!

That's a solid list, although I'd change the order around a bit

1. Aaron Rodgers
2. Clay Matthews
3. Nick Collins
4. BJ Raji
5. Greg Jennings
6. Jermicheal Finley
7. Josh Sitton
8. Desmond Bishop
9. Bryan Bulaga
10. AJ Hawk

I also feel that Mike Neal will make this list some day. I obviously can’t back that up, but it’s just a hunch…..

Burnett

If he turns out to be anything close to his potential as a ball hawking safety could easily make the list as well… He has other faults in his game he has to overcome, but if he makes INT’s like he is supposed to be able to do, Burnett might be the better choice ot make the list!

I remember when they picked Matthews....

and despte going to a Pac 10 school I didn’t really keep up on USC players.

They showed tape on Matthews dropping his hands at the snap and getting beaten on the line on blocks, said that Maulaluga was better and should have gone before Matthews and some couldn’t understand why the Pack moved up for him. I believed them at the time and wondered if it would turn out ok.

I think far and away that Matthews is and will continue to be the most impactful LB of that draft, more or less the USC LBs drafted.

Teddy T strikes (gold) again.

I remember

When the trade was announced… I was screaming for an OT, Beatty I think who went to NYG later, and when Matthews was announced I was stunned! WHat a great pick that was for Thompson. Just pure solid gold!!!

My thoughts when CM3 was picked were

I’ve never heard much of the guy, but if TT is giving up draft picks to get him then he’s going to be a great player.

All I kept hearing about Matthews before the draft...

“He was the 4th best linebacker at USC….”

Yeah… who’s talking about Rey Maualuga now? Cushing tested positive for ‘roids. And I don’t even remember the 3rd guy. Clay is the frickin’ man!

I liked the pick. I was shocked they did it and I never imagined Clay would do anything like he has but I liked his potential. Figured he’d be a little more of a project than he was though.

I've mentioned it several times

After the draft TT was told he overpaid New England according to the draft pick valuation chart, TT sinply stated where we had Matthews ranked we feel we had value. Obviously he had him ranked much higher than he picked him at.

Any time anyone tells Thompson something stupid like that....

about making a mistake or insinuating that he didn’t know what he was doing….

He should just kick them in the balls and then reach down to help them back up off the floor with the hand that has the ring on it while quipping, “Anymore wise-ass comments?”

Thompson's awkward/serious persona....

would make it seem pretty intimidating too……

But seriously, on NFLN the other day they were talking about the top GMs in the league and Thompson was one of the two or three they talked about. There isn’t really anyone much hotter as a GM in the past few years than him and if you couple that with his decisions on key players like Butt Fart, it makes him look like the reincarnation of Nostradamus.

I think they also discussed Ozzie Newsome, who I really like as a GM and think has done a great job in Baltimore.

by PhoenicianPakFan on Apr 17, 2011 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

He also seems to have a ton of respect from his players....

not that other GMs don’t but being a player himself, it seems that they think he has the pulse of the team very well from the locker room to the administrative decisions.

I know of

one GM, at least, that shares that advantage
of having been a player.
Also, a certain team President/CEO. :)

Goes to show you...

what the Packers think of AJ Hawk if he’s got him that high on his list.

I think I’ve figured out how to take a picture from one comment thread and put it in another.
I’m going to try it now.

First,

I right-clicked on the picture in the other thread that I wanted to use.
Then, in the menu that appeared, I clicked on ‘Properties’ and, among the information I was given was a URL for the picture.
I then copied that URL to use for putting the picture into this thread.
Voila’!

That's a good question.

I’ve got an idea, but would need to work on it after I get home from the bowling alley tonight.
Involves getting it onto the net through e-mail, first.

I dont follow draft classes much

that said I had my eye on two guys going into the draft.. (probably wisdom from reading my packer pages) Raji, and Matthews. Boy was I excited when I heard we got them both.. Draft could have been over right then… “Winning”! TT must have some Tiger Blood in him.
