"Deangelo Williams, Lets make it happen"
*Authors Note: This is my First Post. I Did Not notice the article written by a Panther fan suggesting the very same idea. I still say for my opinion, bring him in. Often Used and not a need position are valid arguments against it, but a Pro Bowl running back for pick number 32 is worth it.
There is a lot of talk that Deangelo Williams might be leaving Carolina. I think he would be a perfect fit with the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. Do I think this is a major area of need for the Packers. No. I like Ryan Grant and am interested to see how he comes back from that ankle injury. I love James Starks and am very excited about his future. However, a talent like Deangelo Williams does not become a free agent very often. One of the big obstacles for getting him though is he has expressed a desire to play for Miami, or return to Carolina. If the Packers came knocking on his door, I think it would be hard for him to turn that down. Then again he is obviously a warm weather type of guy, so maybe he would turn us down no matter how much money we were willing to spend. I really think his power running style plays very well in a cold atmosphere though, so if he were willing to give it a try, it could be a match made in heaven.
If we were to sign Williams, Grant would probably have to be sold down the river. Hey, maybe even to Carolina! Who knows where we would have to ship Grant to but I doubt they would be willing to keep all three players. Plus, if we were to keep all three players then Brandon Jackson would have to be the odd man out. Starks has to stay. A one, two punch of Deangelo Williams and James Starks sounds awfully good to me though. Either way its just speculation from a person who fully admits knows nothing compared to what the head honchos know. Ryan Grant still has some good days ahead of him, but Deangelo Williams is better. Let me know what you guys think!

Only way I see this happening is...
If Thompson isn’t happy with what’s left at 32 (I really doubt that, though). I get that D’Angelo is a special player, but there are far more pressing needs than RB on this team (DL, OLB, OL).
Super Bowl XLV Champions, the Green Bay Packers!
FA and trades
IMO, should be used to address obvious holes on your team. RB is not an obvious hole… You admit as much yourself. If he’s not a major upgrade at an obvious need, then why do it?
BTW – I don’t really think Williams running style is best described as “power running”. At least not anymore than Grants style is…
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
He's a very explosive runner.
The true power runner on that team is Jonathan Stewart. Frankly, I’d take Stewart; he doesn’t have Williams’s injury history.

Isn't he a free agent next year?
A first round pick isn’t worth a 1 year rental.

Not a whole lot better than
a third round pick for a 4 week rental. Skol! :D

Or a 10 week rental for a 3rd either...

Marshawn Lynch cost the Titans a 3rd?
Well he definitely cost Tracy Porter his dignity…

assuming Marshawn was a rental and I dont’ think he would have been.

I do
We already have Grant under contract and Starks… Lynch could have stuck around as a 3rd down RB, if he would have accepted that role, I guess… You think he would? LOL
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
I think we would have gotten rid of Grant. I’d take Lynch over him 7 days of the week.

Not sure if I’d go that far! I’d take Starks over both. He’s gonna be a damn good player.

He’s a free agent THIS year.

He's a free agent now?
Then TT definitely won’t be trading our first round pick for him… lol

I'm not sure I would buy on this
To be getting a used running back is kinda like getting used underwear. No matter how much the other guy is telling you how its been lightly used I’m still preferring to buy fresh.
I don’t want to take away from Williams one bit, but RB just doesn’t give good value. There are really two forces that work against the value of the trade (not counting on the Packers current stable of backs)….
1. The NFL is a meat grinder for running backs. Running back is probably the only position on the field where you can set your watch to when the guy’s career is going to be done. Really is just about as simple as asking “Is the guy 30?” If the answer is yes then yes got a year or two tops, if he isn’t done already. This is really do to the amount of punishment the guy takes and so getting a running back that has already been through the grinder is just not really a good deal typically…he’s probably already used up his best years making a name for himself somewhere else.
2. The RB position has really become a dime a dozen. Last year the Jaamal Charles and Peyton Hillis broke on to the scene and were putting up numbers comparable to AP and CJ2K. The two teams that got them basically got them for nothing, and paid them very little in NFL terms. This year there is only one RB that seems worthy of a first round grade, and even he might slip out of the first round (by the way, if that does happen it will be the first time in 40 years that a RB hasn’t been taken in the first round). Really a team just needs to have a RB that’s good enough in order to succeed, not a freak like AP.
It does sound like a good idea to get a two time pro bowler, but really the value isn’t there, even for the 32nd pick. First round picks need to last a while and Williams won’t be able to match that time that a good DL or OL would.
Why are we talking about trading for a guy who’s a free agent?

Because these are the weeks of deceit and trickery...
and its so outlandish that the other teams might forfeit the draft our of fear of Thompson if he did it?

Williams is a restricted free agent so it would take our 1st round pick to get him this year.
It would have to come with a contract extension otherwise hell no dont do it. Not for a rental. However, i admit its not a glaring need but it is an immediate upgrade to the position. I believe he would be completely worth the 32nd pick and would be better than Grant and a great teacher to Starks

He's only a RFA under last year's weird rules
If the CBA reverts to the status quo of years past, he’ll be a UFA.
13.
Oh yeah i didnt think of that. If we dont even have to give up a 1st rounder for him id really want him then.
I think the point is moot either way cuz i think he will want to stay in warm weather anyway
