Draft Prospect #2

Continuing my series on the Packers most likely draft picks w/ the 32nd pick in the draft...  This is a player who has been on the radar since he declared for the draft as a true Jr.  He fits a need of the team and is generally rated in the Top 20-35 players.

Star-divide

Justin Houston is a 6'3 270 lb DE/OLB from Georgia.  He fits the mold of both a 43 DE and a 34 OLB w/ his size and physical characteristics and if drafted to play OLB he could drop 10 lbs to gain slightly more quickness.  What Houston is most known for, and what he at times focuses too much on is as a pass rusher.  When attacking the QB, Houston shows a good explosive first step and get off to reach and threaten the edge!  He has a good bull rush besides his speed rush, but needs to broaden his other moves and pass rush repetoire, notably missing is a spin  move at this time.  Houston is blessed w/ long arms and large hands that he uses to control the OL and disengage to make plays.  Has the ability to keep the OL hands off his body to gain an advantage when pass rushing.  While he has improved his hand usage it is still a work in progress, but the tools are there to become a 12+ sack OLB at the next level.

In run defense, Houston is solid when setting the edge and again using his long arms to disengage, but has to learn to work w/ his hands better to really advance in this area.  He is good in pursuit as well, but sometimes lacks the tenacity to chase plays to the far sideline.  Houston has an advantage in transitioning to a 34 OLB role over some of his counterparts in the draft, being that Georgia switched to a 34 D prior to Houstons Jr Season.  He has experience playing in a 2 point as well as 3 point stance.  He does however have alot of work to do to become a complete NFL OLB.  While he has experience playing upright, he was still used almost exclusively as a pass rusher.  But at least there is film of him dropping into coverage.  In pass coverage Houston will struggle and be a liability in man schemes.  But he has some experience dropping into zones.  He has good enough athletic ability and quickness to become competent in zones, but needs better awareness in any coverage situation, as do most hybrid DE/OLB players.

Houston is a player that may or may not be available when the Packers pick.  His size, athletic ability and experience in both 3 and 4 man fronts is a bonus that may get him drafted before the 32nd pick!  He is a player who likes to play moving forward and attacking and will likely have issues when asked to play in reverse.  There are plenty of 34 OLB in the NFL w/ very similar size and athletic ability who have succeeded.  The best comparison for Houston is likely Terrell Suggs who is rarely used by Baltimore in coverage!  In a similar situation Houston could become nearly as good!  The other comparison is LeMarr Woodley...  If Houston turns out to be anything close to them he will have a long and productive career in the NFL.  THe Packers would have to feel extremely lucky if he were to fall into their laps!  He would be an excellent compliment to Matthews in Capers D, especially in a 2-4-5 role, but also in base 34.  My guess is that Houston will go before the Packers pick at 32...

Houston

He’s the top prospect on my list, as most of you know. What excites me most about Houston is his size, ability, and burst off the line. Houston has a very fast burst off the line, whereas his closing speed can sometimes be criticized by scouts, thus making him a late 1st Round Pick. That’s basically the opposite compared to guys like Sheath from Pittsburgh, who is a little slow off the line, but has good closing speed. I believe Houston’s speed off the line makes him an idea fit for our 3-4 Scheme. Our Front 7 is known to attack as opposed to playing a read and react defense. With Houston’s quickness off the edge, we can overwhelm opposing Offensive Lines. Not only that, but Capers can be more unpredictable having Houston and Clay Mathews.

Houston is generally mocked from the early 20s overall to the mid 30s overall. He is a common name in our mock selections, but there is a good chance he will be taken before us. It may not be a bad idea to trade up to ensure we get him. His hand placement and technique in that regard doesn’t worry me. Clay Mathews was also criticized for his hand placement coming out of the 2009 Draft. I firmly believe in our defensive coaching staff and believe in their ability to improve on Houston’s few weaknesses. He should be a solid compliment to Clay Mathews.

Top Prospect.

Seems everyone is thinking Houston is #1 on their wish list. Sheard is another guy I will be profiling in the next couple weeks. Tend to agree that Houston will be off the board when we pick. Read on article that listed him as over-rated, but by and large he seems to be a surefire 1st rd pick.

I'm not surprised there are some that think he is over-rated

If he was a sure thing, he wouldn’t be projected towards the end of the 1st Round. I think the one thing that makes him ideal for us is the talent around Houston, along with the coaching staff. Not only will Houston have the luxury of playing for Dom Capers, but he will be working closely with Kevin Greene, who has worked some magic with Clay Matthews in GB along with Lamarr Woodley and James Harrison in Pittsburgh. When you combine the coaching staff with his abilities, it’s a perfect match. You can teach players moves and techniques, but at this point, you can’t really teach them to be faster off the line. Houston is explosive off the line, so he’s a guy I’m sure Capers and Greene would love to work with.

The most important factor to me is this: Is he quick off the line? These are the guys that will likely be the best fit for Capers’ Scheme.

I like Sheard and think he’ll do well in the NFL, but I don’t envision him being successful in our scheme. He’s too slow out off the line. Otherwise the skills are there. Personally, I think he would be best going to a 4-3 Defense. That’s just me though.

Greene

Actually Kevin Greene was not a coach in Pitts to Woodley or Harrison. He did work there as an intern during training camp for a couple years, so it would be hard to credit him much for their development. But I agree he turned out to be a pretty good hire! He did a great job w/ Zombo and Walden getting them ready on pretty short notice… Matthews to a lesser degree cuz he was going to be a playmaker no matter!

Houston has to used in the right way to be successful. As I mentioned, he will always struggle in coverage, so he has to be used attacking the LOS, a la Suggs! The only problem that might create is putting Matthews in coverage a little more.

I have more reseach to do on Sheard, so we’ll find out then.

Nice job again, Stroh.

With some good coaching in Green Bay, he could become that threat we’ve been looking for opposite CM3. Only question is, if you’re the Packers… do you go with the outside linebacker or defensive end at #32?

Tough call on DE or OLB

Just depends on the players available. Could go either way, but IMO, OLB cuz they would be a starter, whereas we have Pickett at DE yet…

Yeah, given the choice, probably OLB

I’m thinking we may not get the choice, unfortunately.

Good read Stroh. Rec'd.

Houston is the guy I want most for the Packers. I think we’d be fine with what we have now at OLB but I’d rather have good-great, which is what I think Houston could be. Having two legitimate pass rusher’s is a great advantage in the 3-4 scheme. I can only imagine some of the things Capers could do schematics wise if we were to add another guy who can really get after the passer.

trade up

The more I read on him the more I think there is no way he comes to us at 32. We would HAVE to trade up for this guy, it seems like everywhere I look, teams are drooling over him. There’s a bunch of teams that can use outside rushers before us too. I like the pick though.

Agree

If the Packers want Houston, they may have to move up to get him. If he falls to 25 or so, I would do it, cuz it would only cost our 3rd rd pick. Any higher is going to take our 2nd, and that is too much, IMO. Houston could well go before that…

SD at 18, TB 20, Philly 23 and NO 24 all could have interest in Houston. It would get us over Balt, Alt, NE and NYJ… Do you think that would be high enough to get Houston?
