Peter King On Nnamdi Asomugha To The Packers

Photo

There hasn't been much talk about ex-Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha here. He's a free agent, and he's probably the best free agent available. The only reason he could be linked to the Packers is because he's friends with CB Charles Woodson, and Asomugha is in a similar free agent exile from Oakland that Woodson was in a few years back.

The big difference is that nearly everyone in the NFL thought Woodson was done as a cornerback in 2006 and he had no choice except the Packers. Asomugha's arguably the best CB in the NFL, and he'll have suitors to pick from.

But just to make sure there was no doubt, SI's Peter King shot down any Asomugha rumors. From SB Nation:

I'm not sure where some of these rumors come from but I agree with King. The Packers are already an elite team having won the 2011 Super Bowl and the prospects of adding a player who could command one of the richest contracts in the league doesn't make a lot of sense.

There's obviously a way to fit Asomugha in on the field, and turn the Packers secondary into a dangerous place to throw the football, but the financial commitment would put a lot of other re-signings at risk in the future.

Players like RG Josh Sitton and TE Jermichael Finley might need to be extended as soon as this summer, and LB Clay Matthews is probably in line for a massive extension in 2012. But that's all speculation because the free agency rules haven't been negotiated yet, and those three players might be under team control for an extra year beyond what I just wrote.

I agree with him in this case, but its incredible that Peter King is a successful NFL writer. It seems like its a miracle when he actually gets something right.

So maybe this means that Nnamdi is coming to GB… lol

Not a King fan but

He wasn’t the one who made up the story. It was Jim Wexell who writes for the Steelers. King was just reporting what he heard from another source.

Not the best source no, but he crossed it out in MMQ and said it was wrong.

Well, if he didn't made up, he lied about it

Because the first column he published splicitly said he HIMSELF had heard it on Sirius radio.

He either made it up, or took it from a source without fact checking and lied about it.

Anyway, he’s a hack.

Only in football

And we are hardcore football fans. Do you think the public in general is nearly as interested in facts? The public in general wants the headline and less than a paragraph otherwise it takes to long for them to read it in their busy lives. thats what I’ve gotten from 2 friends in journalism. Both in TV. One national and one local.

I'd blame the public and the media

I think the era of liberal/conservative media bias has been overtaken by the money bias in media.

The information saturation makes it more difficult than ever to take the time to verify the source, so I’d also place some blame on the media, who seem a little low on integrity these days.

"A weapon based on Time . . ." mused Viktor Mulciber. "Well, why not? The one force no one knows how to defeat, resist, or reverse. It kills all forms of life sooner or later. With a Time-weapon you could become the most feared person in history."

Too much money

Asomugha would kill our salary cap. While yes, having Collins, Tramon, Asomugha, and Woodson on the field at the same time would make for the best secondary in the NFL, it would hamper the development of Shields and Burnett.

The more interesting question is where is he going to go? I’ve been hearing alot about the Texans and Bucs, but Asomugha has stated he wants to go to a winning franchise, with a chance to get a ring. I don’t think he would want to go to the Bucs or Texans. The most likely suitors are the Eagles and Cowboys IMO.

I have a feeling Atlanta is his destination

As they are really going for the gold this year after trading away so much for Julio Jones. I can see Atlanta signing Asomugha and Jenkins or Rey Edwards (most likely Edwards though), and they would immediately improve that defense.

But if there is a cap, and that's likely going to be the case, it looks like it'll be between 140 and 150 million...

… based on the positions taken by the owners and the players respectively. Even with the 150 million number, a contract in GB with Asomugha would have to be hugely backloaded, and even then they could forget about James Jones (by way of example).

Asomugha

Probably wouldn’t take a backloaded contract. That money isn’t guareneed and he would never see it. He wants as much front loaded as possible cuz it acts as guarenteed money! He’s a Stanford grad so I’m sure he’s aware of it and his agent… Jones is probably gone the way it is this year. WOuld love to have him back, but w/ Cobb being a sure bet to make it, Jones would be fighting w/ Swain for ST play and scraps at WR. I don’t see that happening. He wouldn’t be happy w/ that role, nor would he be nearly as good at ST as Swain.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on May 16, 2011 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

If Jones were to come back

He would see a lot more time at WR than Cobb. Cobb would be our fifth guy on the depth chart, not Jones.

by Shoes31 on May 16, 2011 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Thats true...

But how many WR are you going to keep? We have always kept just 5 except for a very few instances. Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Cobb are all but assured of a job next year. The 5th and final one usually goes to a ST player. ANd with Finley lining up as a WR in many cases there just isn’t enough snaps available for more WR. Someone has to play Swains role on ST. I don’t see Cobb being a gunner. He’s just a return guy on ST, unless you count holder? LOL

Gotta have someone to pick up Swains role on ST and he was in on just about all of them. So, IMO, Jones is going to leave and the Packers should allow him to, IMO. They just don’t have the roster spot or role for him that he wants. And another team might even be willing to trade for him to be a starer or at least compete to be a starter.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on May 16, 2011 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

That isn't necessarily true.

If Cobb outperformed him in training camp, I could see him being #4. All is moot anyways, some dumb ass team like the Redskins will sign him for big money and pay for it. I think Jones ends up in St. Louis, Carolina or Washington. They are that desperate.

Atlanta can afford 2 Free Agents

Their current team salary is $102.1 Million, and the last salary cap in place was set at $130 Million. Those will be the blockbuster free agent signings that will be similar to what Chicago did last year.

Atlanta

like the rest of the NFC South, was overrated last year because of a schedule that involved going 13-3 vs. the NFC West (including the woeful Carolina Panthers going 2-2 against them).

Atlanta, Tampa Bay and New Orleans went 17-1 vs. the NFC West+Carolina last season. I don’t think I need to say anything more than that.

by TrevorR on May 16, 2011 3:41 PM CDT reply actions

I'm with you.

I know Capers would make it work out somehow, but, frankly, the Packers don’t need Nnamdi (especially not in the way they needed Woodson when he signed his original deal), and he wouldn’t improve the team enough to warrant the money they’d have to spend. I haven’t seen him play very much, but am I mistaken in thinking he’s not a terribly physical corner? Unless he’s a Deion Sanders-caliber coverman (and there was only one Primetime), I don’t know if he could actually help the team. In other words: I’m happy with what we’ve got, and the money is best spent elsewhere: Sitton, Finley, Matthews, etc.

by mpbMKE on May 16, 2011 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Nnamdi

Excels at press man coverage. He can get physical w/ WR and take them out of their routes and run w/ them in coverage. He has great foot quickness, long arms (for press) and good speed. Wouldn’t put him in Deion territory, but he’s damn good! Personally, I like him better than Revis. But we can’t sign him… It would gut our roster of some very good players!

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on May 16, 2011 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL

Yeah Deion couldn’t tackle a lick… He was pretty physical when it came to press coverage tho. He would get in the WR face and get his hands on them and re-route them. He did a very good job of that. Tackling Deion didn’t and wouldn’t do! The man was THE best shut down CB in the game… Maybe ever. Some old school guys were damn good to. Hayes, Haynes, Willie Brown, Herb Adderly guys like that were shut down CB, who had the advantage of being able to stay in contact at all times. Deion didn’t have that freedom.

On the topic of Woodson...

Let’s say that by 2012 we are comfortable with Tramon and Shields as our base corners and we have a serviceable nickelback, I assume Woodson goes to SS bumping Burnett or Peprah. How do you all feel about that?

I say you keep Woodson on the field as long as possible even if it means sacrificing Burnett’s development. He just brings too much to the table.

All is vanity.

by levnclf on May 16, 2011 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Keep Woodson on the field as long as he's the better player

That’s the way it works. Woodson has come out and said he’s willing to move to safety whenever the time comes that he can’t play corner anymore. If Woodson is better on the field as safety, he gets the most playing time. If Burnett or Peprah are better, they play.

you don’t commit that much money to another CB when we have 3 pretty good ones, including an emerging #1 stud in Tramon WIlliams who deserves a shot once Woodson slows down. Balance is so important, and as the post said we have a lot of talented young players we’re going to need to extend. Doesn’t make sense to pump all that money into an already talented and productive secondary.

Williams was the clear # 1 after about week 3 this year. Woodson rarely covered the opposing teams’ #1 reciever. I agree though, dont sign Asomugha, plenty of better places to throw the money, like extending contracts of our stars.

C-Wood is the better defensive player, but at this point in his career Williams is the better CB. Its similar to the arguments for Revis to win DPOY. The award is given to the best Defensive Player not to the best CB which is why C-Wood and not Revis won the award a couple years ago.

Woodson impacts the defense in a way that no one else can, but Williams is the top cover guy on the team.

THIS
C-Wood is the better defensive player, but at this point in his career Williams is the better CB

Woodson is THE best tackling CB in the league. http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/05/18/tackling-corners-2/ He’s the only one that consistantly plays against TEs and RBs.

But IMHO his days as the #1 shutdown corner are over. In fact, I’d argue that he never was a trully shutdown corner. More of a terrific playmaker that had all around skills and could cover any Wr, but not shut them down.

Williams was phenomenal, IIRC prior to the MIA game he hadn’t fiven up more than 4 receptions, 40 yards and no TD, playing the likes of DeSean Jackson and Lee Evans. In fact, if I’m not mistaken (am not looking at every single TD given), he only allowed Tds to Brandon Marshall and Hakeem Nicks all year, not to mention what he did in the playoffs.

"IT IS TIME"

by PackersRS on May 18, 2011 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Wood was a shutdown CB.

In Oakland he was and in GB too. He has always been a CB who tried to bait QB’s into throwing towards him to tho. So he may give up a few more receptions than others, but he did it to try to make plays. But when he absolutely needed to shut someone down he did. Since Capers got a hold of him he’s been using him to take advantage of All his skills, not just his coverage skills.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

No Way Jose, er King!

With a talent laden line-up that has to be protected, I don’t see any way TThompson spends the big dollars to get Asomugha. He has prospects to be worked to determine their ability to fit in, young players already in the system like Peprah, Shields and Tramon Williams that make a core of talent already producing results. The cost of signing Asomugha will prevent Packers from considering it.
