Where Do You Stand On The Packers Free Agents?

ARLINGTON TX - FEBRUARY 06: Cullen Jenkins #77 and Mason Crosby #2 of the Green Bay Packers run onto the field prior to Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium on February 6 2011 in Arlington Texas. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

With the lockout likely over by Thursday, and the chaos of free agency about to begin, the first order of business for the Green Bay Packers is free agency. Here's a recent list of expected unrestricted free agents from Tyler Dunne at JS Online.com, and here are the most notable names on the list:

DE Cullen Jenkins

LG Daryn Colledge

WR James Jones

K Mason Crosby

RB Brandon Jackson

FB/RB John Kuhn

The first thing I'd like to point out that they don't need to re-sign any of these players.

The only two indispensable players on the roster are Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews (the Packers were 0-4 last season in games when either player was injured during or missed due to injury). Last season, with the cascade of injuries, it proved that their roster is so deep that they can afford to lose a few players. With several new draft picks, and them certain to sign a handful of undrafted free agents, they won't leave the roster thin. Based on their past success, some of those late round picks and undrafted free agents are certain to be hidden gems.

The only problematic free agent is Crosby. While not indispensable, there is obviously no one on the roster right now who could replace him. But it wouldn't be too hard to find an adequate kicker in free agency. It probably isn't even an issue because re-signing him is probably their top priority.

I expect they'll re-sign some of these players. And I like something about all of these players, even if it's not essential that they are re-signed.

I'll go in-depth on each free agent throughout the week. What do you think about these guys? Any players they absolutely need to have return in 2011? Anyone that absolutely needs to go?

Hoo boy, Brandon...

They sure don’t need to resign any of those players.

My personal preference is that they keep Jenkins (and now, I’ll just get off that soap box until the season gets underway) and possibly Crosby, but with an offense like the Pack, getting close for good FG opportunities and plus the new kick off rules… eh. They could afford to look elsewhere. Believe it or not, I actually like what Brandon Jackson brings. He’s not their primary runner, but he’s got some flexibility and can do a lot of other little things as a running back… guess it depends on what he’s looking for in a contract.

Realistically? I don’t think anyone on that list is coming back. It’ll be a shame to see those guys in another uniform and I’ll be rooting for them when they’re not playing my beloved Packers, but it’s all about calibrating a system for their QB and young defensive leaders for the long term.

Yeah, Brandon Jackson is a really good 3rd down back

I’m not sure if they intend to make Green the 3rd down back or not, but Brandon Jackson is going to be the best option we have for 3rd down RB. However, the agent he chose makes me think that he’s going to be playing for a different team next year.

I think it's more of Brandon himself as opposed to his agent

I guess I just got that feeling after he said, “I want to be paid like a starting RB.” Well, I paraphrased that quote. As bad as he was as a ball carrier, he certainly was a darn good 3rd down back and will be missed. I have a feeling McCarthy will have Green and Starks share the role as Starks will help relieve Grant of carries as well.

I ran out of quotes.....

I agree

The fact that he chose the agent he did shows he wants a big payday somewhere else.

Free Agency

Resign John Kuhn and Mason Crosby.
Cut Brady Poppinga and Mark Tauscher (if he doesn’t retire)
Trade Nick Barnett

If possible, how many here at APC would be in favor of giving Manny Lawson a shot? I came across this at Revenge of the Birds, which was originally from Pro Football Focus:

If you’re looking for a guy with upside, and who won’t break the bank, then why look further than Lawson? His rather pedestrian sack numbers don’t do him justice, considering he gets more pressure on a per-play basis than guys like Clay Matthews, James Harrisonand Cameron Wake. It’s just that the 49ers opted to have him in a rotation which meant he only rushed the passer 218 times. Perhaps the 49ers were disappointed in him following his 2008 and 2009 season where he struggled to consistently get pressure on the QB. But in Year 5 he finally seemed to get it, and with an overload of teams running the 3-4 a number of them would do well to find a solid starter like Lawson.

I’m not sure if it’s true that Lawson generates a lot of pressure per play, but it’s certainly possible. As Brandon mentioned above, in games we are without Clay Matthews, we lose. Lawson may be a good project for Kevin Greene to work with. I like Walden and Zombo, but Lawson would provide more experience and still has lots of upside. What does everyone here at APC think of Lawson?

I ran out of quotes.....

Lawson

He might be a good FA signing. It seems he is quite good in coverage and against the run. I doubt he’s as good a pass rusher as they make him out to be, but he would probably come relatively cheap and give us a much more complete player at OLB than we currently have. But if he is nearly as good as they make him sound he would be a great FA to sign. He does fit the Thompson mold of players in FA. A guy that would be relatively inexpensive and who could become a heavy contributor.

I don't know about that inexpensive part

I’ve seen his name mentioned in a few places, as someone who can provide an outside pass rush though he’s never really been that good at it. 14.5 sacks in 5 seasons. He’s a prime candidate to get overpaid.

by Brandon on Jul 19, 2011 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I certainly wouldn't overpay...

Not for that limited production. If he’s relatively inexpensive, I say go for it. But I can’t see overpaying for 14.5 sacks in 5 yrs.

Packer FA

They ones that I Definitely want back are Crosby and Kuhn. Crosby has the big leg we need at Kicker and Kuhn plays so many roles that while not irreplacable he is very valuable. They will almost surely be back, IMO.

After that We would all love to have Jenkins back, but that just doesn’t seem to be in the cards, Would take releasing Barnett, Tauscher and Grant to re-sign him to a contract I expect will exceed 10M.

I actually think Colledge is the next most likely to return after Crosby and Kuhn. He won’t command alot of money, I’m guessing 4M per or so to bring him back. And we really don’t have a suitable replacement for him. We have alot of unknowns behind him. I think Jackson is the next most likely. He role as a 3rd down RB is very valuable and he is very good at it. I don’t think he’s gonna find too many teams that will give him carries. If we can get him back for 3M I would be happy w/ that.

Jones is too good for some team not to give him a shot as a starter and the $$$ to go w/ it. He would be a starter for every team in our division next year if they signed him, and alot of other teams too.

Crosby and Kuhn are about 90% to return. Colledge and Jackson about 50/50 chance. Jones and Jenkins less than 10%…

I agree with this

I would say Crosby and Kuhn would be nice to have back.

That being said, give Crosby a short contract (2 years or so). I don’t think anyone is sold on him.

Colledge and Jackson should walk IMO and yeah Jones and Jenkins are as good as gone!

Seems like the Packers drafted with most of these positions in mind
  • Daryn College: OLs Derek Sherrod, Caleb Schlauderaff
  • James Jones: WR Randall Cobb, TEs DJ Williams, Ryan Taylor
  • Brandon Jackson, John Kuhn: RB Alex Green
  • Cullen Jenkins: DB Davon House, LB DJ Smith, DL Elmore Ricky, DT Guy Lawrence

Of course, half of these guys are late round picks with no guarantee to make the team, but I definitely get the impression the Packers are happy to see these guys compete for their spot.

by DaveInTucson on Jul 19, 2011 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

They definitely need to resign Crosby.

Or has everyone forcibly removed the memory of Dave Rayner from their brains?

Is he the best kicker? Obviously not. But he’s definitely better than anyone we’d find in the free agent scrap heap, with the added benefit that he’s still young and likely will get better.

I’d sure like to see the Pack spend the money to keep Jenkins.

The rest of ‘em I don’t really care much about. They’re nice players, but nothing too special.

But Jenkins is a force against the run or pass. He seems to be a good teammate. He plays hard. I can definitely tell the difference when he’s out there or not. The team’s a lot better when he is.

He’s not as valuable as Rodgers or Matthews, but he’s right up there with Jennings, Woodson, Clifton, Sitton, Collins and Tramon. It’s this second tier of guys who are the guts of the team. …and, in fact, I’d say Jenkins is one of the more valuable guys in the group. A lineman that can create against run or pass is… those guys don’t grow on trees.

by Curly Lambeau on Jul 19, 2011 8:45 PM CDT reply actions

Crosby is necessary and almost definitely back

Kuhn will probably be back but we’d have to cut ties with Hall or Johnson. After that everyone is some combination of too expensive, fungible, or replaced via the draft. I guess Kuhn is too but the team seems high on him, Colledge has the best chance of anyone else to come back and I don’t think even he will be

FA's

I’d say Crosby and Kuhn are going to be resigned. I’d also say Jackson and Colledge are gone, due to our recent draft picks and other players on the team. I like Jackson’s skill set for our team, but keeping him means cutting Grant, Starks, or Green (Green wont make it to the practice squad).

I’d like to see Jenkins and Jones back, but I doubt they do. They will probably command too much money for us (especially since we need to lock up some players long term soon), and because we drafted their replacements. But those replacements are either rookies or first year pro’s and are missing key instructional time if they want to contribute this season.

I like Jackson’s skill set for our team, but keeping him means cutting Grant, Starks, or Green.

I disagree w/ this… I can easily see the Packers keeping 4 RB, 1 FB and 4 TE. None of the FB beside Kuhn bring much to the team. TE’s can be good blockers and very good recievers as well as valuable ST contributors. Jackson is far more valuable then Hall or Johnson. I honestly don’t see any reason to keep either Hall or Johnson.

Keeping…
RB – Grant, Starks, Jackson, and Green
FB – Kuhn
TE – Finley, Quarless, Williams, Crabtree or Taylor

Thats truly keeping the best and most talented players.

DE Cullen Jenkins – Trade Barnett in a deal that favors the Pack money wise and use the extra to bring in Jenkins. Resign.

LG Daryn Colledge – Resign if possible.

WR James Jones – If the money is there, resign but won’t be shocked to see him go.

K Mason Crosby – Resign him.

RB Brandon Jackson – Let him go. Too many RB on the roster now anyways.

FB/RB John Kuhn – Resign him. Guys is a folk hero and along with that, those short line carries are designed for him.

by king.nothing on Jul 19, 2011 9:04 PM CDT reply actions

Jenkins

Is probably going to make upwards of 10M on the open market. We are tight against the cap. Keeping Jenkins would mean releasing Barnett, Tauscher and Grant and we still might not have enough to sign our draft class. Barnett and Tauscher save us about 8M in cap room. Thats enough to sign the draft picks and maybe one of our FA’s (after Crosby and Kuhn), not named Jenkins.

Trading Barnett is going to really difficult considering he’s own 12M over the next 2 years, his injury history and age.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Jul 19, 2011 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea, it sucks but we need to get rid of Jenkins

The money he’ll want is too much for a 30 year old who is injured as much as he is. I think Neal or Wilson can be an adequate replacement.

Just want to put this out there, RE: Kuhn

Is the tone overall that him staying is just a given? I kind of feel like he’s another player that could attract a competitive offer. I know fullbacks aren’t in serious demand, but I can think of a few teams that could table an attractive offer to him and he’d actually make an impact. Otherwise, I would have place him on the list of people as well, but… I don’t know – Thompson seems to have no sentimentality concerning fan faves and if Kuhn’s pricetag got lifted even a little, I’m not sure the Pack would look to beat it.

So does every free agent from the past 5 years...

He DID get a few solid years from Andre Carter, but Shanahan’s staff completely wasted Carter in 2010.

Hmmm...

DE Cullen Jenkins – See what his price tag is. If unreasonable, no.
LG Daryn Colledge – Again, see what price tag is. Unreasonable? Same result.
WR James Jones – No idea. I’d like to see what TT can swing for JJ.
K Mason Crosby – Bring him back. He’s solid, a mainstay at that position, and was solid in the playoffs when called upon.
RB Brandon Jackson – Keep as a 3rd down back. He’s not a starter, not with our OL the way it is.
FB/RB John Kuhn – Keep; he’s a fan favorite who’s very good in his role (a complement to the other backs and 1st down machine). Kuhn as a starter? (shudders)

I consider Kuhn a starter.

The starting FB. He shouldn’t have to be called upon to carry the ball much again. Not w/ the depth we have at RB now.

I agree 100%

I’ve been wanting to mention this for a while, but couldn’t find the right discussion for it. I think McCarthy will call on Starks more often on 3rd and short and 2nd and short. This will also keep Kuhn fresh so he can be more effective playing on Special Teams.

I ran out of quotes.....

by Jabooty on Jul 20, 2011 5:11 AM CDT up reply actions

definitely need to retain Crosby and Kuhn

would prefer to keep Colledge if his price isn’t unreasonable, same with Jenkins. They don’t need Jones or Jackson.

They’ll definitely cut Poppinga and Tauscher (and I think they’ll resign Tauscher at a much lower number). They’ll try to trade Barnett as well, if not, they may try to restructure his contract as well. Packers look to only be 67k under the cap, so those moves are necessary.

I am too drunk to taste this chicken.

Our own..

Kuhn a handy guy..plus crowd reaction is classic.

Crosby-grudgingly

Colledge- take em or leave em.

Jones- would hate to give up on him..

Jackson- I think Green is replacement

Jenkins- Love the guy, but hurt alot and age concern me. I would make a high enough offer so rivals would have to pay alot to get him..

Well...

As much as I disdain Colledge, he’s better than what’s behind him. Jones is going to be too expensive, especially with the depth we have at the position. Probably the same with Jenkins. Crosby > quite a few other starting kickers in the league, have to keep him till someone better comes along. Agree with Jackson/Kuhn.
